Here are some of the Olympians who have shown the spirit of the Olympics in their unique ways at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.
Brittany Bowe
The 33-year-old Brittany Bowe voluntarily gave up her spot on the US 500-meter speedskating team to her teammate and friend Erin Jackson. It cost her one of the two spots at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games. Jackson, the world’s top-ranked woman for the event, slipped during the US Olympic qualifying contest.
“You are always ranked number one in the world and no one is more deserving than you to get an opportunity to compete in Beijing, ” Bowe told Jackson.
Mikaela Shiffrin
The 26-year-old Alpine skier, who has won more World Cup races than anyone in history, woman or man, didn’t finish three of her five races in Beijing after either falling or skiing out of the course within a matter of seconds.
“I don’t know if anybody’s failed that hard with so many opportunities—maybe in the history of the Olympics. But I will face those failures with sportsmanship, ” she joked.
Eileen Gu
The 18-year-old “Snow Princess” has struggled in qualifying in both of her Olympic events. She fell once during the big air jumps and had to increase the technical difficulty in the third round to ensure her spot in the final, where she went on to win the gold medal,
“I don’t know why I kept failing, ” Gu said. “But I’m happy I was able to turn pressure into fuel and push through, ”
Lindsey Jacobellis
After a 16-year medal drought (旱季), the 36-year-old eventually overpowered a much younger field of competitors during the women’s snowboard cross and won her first career (职业) gold in Beijing. She went on to compete at the first-ever mixed team snowboard cross event with 40-year-old teammate Nick Baumgartner—again winning gold.
“Don’t count the old girl out, ” Jacobellis said jokingly.

They are drawing the attention of the world. They bear the responsibility to shape our future. Who are they? They are the young generation who were born after 2000.
This year, several young athletes have shone brightly at the Beijing Winter Olympics, giving the public a glimpse of their generation’s nature.
Obviously, the young generation is filled with “brave warriors” who want to challenge impossibilities and push boundaries. Freestyle skier Gu Ailing is a good example. After she finished strong in the first two jumps in the women’s freeski big air event, it was certain that she could get a medal. But instead of playing it safe, the 18-year-old skier pushed herself to the limit. On the last jump, Gu decided to attempt a difficult trick: a left double cork 1620—four and a half rotations in the air—before landing.
“I have never done the ‘left 16’ before,” Gu told China Daily, “but I felt it was a chance to push myself to the limit.”
For the young athletes, the sport is never just about scores, but also about having as much fun as possible.
Born in the US, Gu faced criticism and doubts for representing China in the Beijing Winter Olympics. When questioned by The Guardian at a news conference on Feb. 8, the “post-00” said boldly that she wasn’t trying to make everyone happy. “I’m an 18-year-old girl out here living my best life. I’m having a great time,’’ Gu said. “It doesn’t really matter if other people are happy or not, because I feel I’m doing my best and I’m enjoying the entire process.”
Gu’s good friend, Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming also shares a similar attitude. He takes sports as a way to have fun.
After he was judged to have lost the gold to Canadian athlete Max Parrot in the men’s slope-style final, the 17-year-old didn’t feel upset. Instead, he was happy to have the chance to compete with his idol.
“When I was on the podium hugging Max Parrot, it felt unreal,” Su told China Daily. “All I did today was enjoying the runs and concentrating on my tricks. As long as I am on my snowboard I am happy.”
This is young generation that dares to push the limits but also enjoys life.

A.Gu’s last jump has proved “practice makes perfect”.
B.Su lost his gold medal due to his poor performance.
C.Gu Ailing was criticized because she couldn’t make everyone happy.
D.The new understanding of sports from the “post-00”appeals to the public.

Thanks to the hard work of companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Blue Origin, space tourism is well on its way to becoming a reality. Now, California-based Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC) provides a chance for space visitors to extend their “out-of-the-world” experience by checking into a luxurious hotel in low Earth orbit.
The 650-foot-wide Ferris-wheel-like (像摩天轮) Voyager Space Station (VSS) will comprise two rings. The inner circle will be fitted with spacecraft stations for guests. The outer ring will house the rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, and scientific research labs. The solar-powered hotel will spin at speed high enough to create artificial gravity, ensuring people a comfortable stay. When completed, it will have room for up to 400 people. OAC hopes to attract not just tourists but also scientists, astronauts on long-distance missions, and even some semi-permanent residents.
While the idea is interesting, making VSS a reality will take time. The team is currently building modules (组件) for a smaller prototype (样机) ring. The modules will be put together in zero-gravity using semi-automatic robotic tools made for the purpose. Once completed, OAC engineers will attempt to create artificial gravity similar to what Mars has—about 40 percent that of Earth.
Even if the prototype is wildly successful, transporting the VSS modules to space will cost tens of billions of dollars. However, OAC, which expects to charge $ 5 million per person for each 3-day stay, is confident they will get back the expenses. Though the cost may seem too high, it is low compared to the $ 55 million it costs to stay on the VSS.
Besides, guests at the Voyager Space Station will be living in the utmost luxury. “You’re going to have the top chefs making really, really good food,” Orbital CEO John Blincow told the Washington Post. “And when you pay $ 5 million to go someplace, it’s not going to be burgers and fries. We want to have Sting come up and play, and Beyonce. There’ll be two shows every night. That’s part of the entertainment package.”
28.What's the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To present a phenomenon. B.To give background information.
C.To contradict an argument. D.To function as a brief introduction.
29.What can we learn about the hotel of VSS?
A.The hotel is intended for rich tourists only. B.The first guests will live 3 days in it for free.
C.Guests of the hotel will enjoy excellent service. D.OAC can hardly make enough money to cover the costs.
30.What will the OAC engineers create for the prototype ring?
A.A secure environment. B.Gravity similar to that of Mars.
C.Some robotic tools. D.A scientific lab.
31.Which column is the text most likely from?
A.Science. B.Travel.
C.Health. D.Education.

When cultural heritage sites disappear, they’re gone forever. However, they are being endangered at an alarming rate by rising seas (Venice), pollution (the Taj Mahal) and overtourism (Angkor Wat). Just to name a few.
But when we try to protect these heritage sites, we also have to face such thorny questions as “What part of the past is worth preserving and passing on to the next generations? What duty do we owe to the creations of our ancestors? What strength do we draw from their presence—and when, on the contrary, do they become a lead weight, preventing us from projecting ourselves into the future?”.
Humankind has answered these difficult questions differently in different places. In Dresden, Germany, the Frauenkirche was an 18th century church whose bell- shaped top was a landmark. In February, 1945, one of the most destructive bombing attacks of World War II killed more than 25, 000 people and reduced the city to ruins. As Dresden slowly rebuilt after the war, the Frauenkirche was left in ruins. But after German reunification, the church was reconstructed using many of its original materials, as a statement of peace and harmony.
Like the Frauenkircbe, Notre Dame, a landmark in Paris, which was destroyed by fire in 2019, is being rebuilt as close as possible to how it was before, including using the original and poisonous metal lead for the roof. That choice was controversial, as future choices are bound to be in the debate about how to restore and preserve historic buildings.
Perhaps, no one can claim to have the right answers on preservation. There may not even be right answers. What we will do is to continue to take care of important cultural heritage sites, as a matter of significance to humanity’s past, present and future.
32.Which heritage site is suffering from too many visitors?
A.Venice. B.Dresden. C.The Taj Mahal. D.Angkor Wat.
33.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “thorny” in paragraph 2?
A.Tough. B.Smart. C.Interesting. D.Important.
34.What does the author dislike about the rebuilding of Notre Dame?
A.The high rebuilding costs. B.The timing of reconstruction.
C.The choice of certain material. D.The significance of preservation.
35.What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.We should protect as many heritage sites as possible.
B.It is better to leave the damaged historic buildings alone.
C.Historic buildings should be rebuilt with the same materials.
D.Heritage sites serve as an important link among human beings.

It was Hoppy’s first day at his new school. He didn’t know anyone yet, but he had seen some cool kids at the beach during the summer.
Billy, one of the cool kids, sat down next to Hoppy at break and started to have a talk. They discovered they shared the same interest, surfing, but Hobby went to the beach with his dad, instead of hanging out there with friends, which was laughed at by Billy. He invited Hoppy to the beach with his friends. Hoppy nodded, happy to have a new friend.
After school Hoppy met Billy and his three friends at the school gate, one of whom tried to punch Hoppy’s stomach as a way of “greetings”. While walking on the street, they met a boy, having trouble with his bike. Billy and his friends started to tease the boy. The boy looked up uneasily about this interest in him and his flat-tyre.
Billy nudged the boy so that he fell on the kerb (侧石) and broke his glasses. Billy and his friends ran off down the street, laughing. However, Hoppy just stood there.
The boy, Gerald, sat on the kerb, crying now. He looked up at Hoppy and begged him not to hit him. Hoppy smiled and said, “I’ve never beaten anyone up. Only bullies (霸凌) and cowards do that. Really strong people keep their fists in their pockets. That’s what my dad says.” Gerald seemed relieved. They walked to Gerald’s house, talking about going to the beach together. Their friendship grew.
One Sunday, Hoppy went to the beach with his father. Billy and his friends were there. Billy called out to Hoppy, complaining about helping Gerald. He spoke in an unpleasant tone, saying his dad was his babysitter. Hoppy smiled and ignored him.
Gerald arrived to see Hoppy. When he saw the boys, his heart sank. Billy and his gang surrounded him. “Hoppy’s tricked me,” thought Gerald, and he started to walk away. Billy ran after Gerald and tripped him. Gerald fell onto the sand, but picked himself up and asked them to leave him alone. However, Billy didn’t stop and tripped Gerald again.
Paragraph 1:
This time Gerald managed a brave smile as he got up and faced the boys.

Hoppy and his dad came up beside Gerald, but Gerald said to them, “Why don’t you go with your friends?”
