My first year living in Los Angeles, I was a birthday-party clown. I struggled a lot with my identity because, though I viewed myself as a filmmaker, everyone in my life viewed me as this ridiculous day job.

Once I was told, “Tomorrow you’re going to be Batman.” Now, keep in mind that at the time I had a giant mustache. I know a clown with a mustache is a huge red flag for parents. But I hadn’t wanted to alter my physical appearance for that job, because that would have been me subconsciously admitting I was more of a clown than an artist.

The next day, I went to the party in a huge public park, and I left my car parked far enough away so that the kids couldn’t see Batman pulling up in a PT Cruiser. Walking to the party, I started to regret my choice not to shave. “Gosh, this party is not going to go well.” Sure enough, once I got close enough for them to actually start making out the features of my face, the entire party broke out in laughter. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to turn around and run back to my Batmobile. But then the laughter kind of changed into cheering and applause. Feeling kind of warm and fuzzy inside, I wondered, “Is this what encouragement and support feel like? It’s so new.”

Then I decided to make an entrance for these kids. I was still about 20 yards away from the party when I started running. My cape was billowing in the wind, and mustache or not, in that moment, I was Batman. I ran into the party, and the kids were all high-fiving me. The dad was saying, “I told you, son. I told you Batman has a mustache.” Then he took me over to this huge birthday cake with a frosting Batman drawn on it, and the Batman has a mustache. I just stared at it in disbelief and learnt that instead of just admitting that the cake was messed up, the parents said, “Batman has a mustache. He just shaves it for his movies.”

That year, I struggled a lot with my identity; was I a filmmaker, or was I a clown? But that day, at least, there was no doubt in my mind what I was. I may not have been the hero that they ordered, and I certainly was not the hero they expected. But that day, I was the hero that they needed.

24Why did “I” keep my mustache?

AI struggled a lot for being a filmmaker.

BI wanted to be a Batman in a birthday party.

CI knew that a clown should wear a mustache.

DI hadn’t wanted to change my appearance for the job.

25How did “I” enter the party?

    AI ran fast. BI high-fived.

CI drove the car. DI walked slowly.

26How did “I” feel at the end of the party?

    ASatisfied. BAstonished.

    CDisappointed. DAshamed.

Japanese automaker Toyota says it will team up with the country’s space agency to develop a vehicle called the Lunar Cruiser to explore the moon. The name comes from a popular Toyota vehicle called the Land Cruiser. The company said it plans to launch the vehicle in the late 2020s. After that, Toyota said the vehicle could assist people living on the moon by 2040 and could possibly be sent to Mars as well.

Takao Sato heads the company’s Lunar Cruiser project. He told The Associated Press the vehicle is based on the idea that people eat, work, sleep and communicate with others safely in cars. He hopes theLunar Cruiser can serve the same purpose in space. “We see space as an area for our once-in-a-century transformation, ” Sato said, “By going to space, we may be able to develop telecommunications and other technology that will prove valuable to human life. ”

Another company, Gitai Japan Inc., is partnering with Toyota to develop a robotic arm for the Lunar Cruiser. It will be designed to perform jobs such as carrying out inspections and maintaining the vehicle. The company said the arm will be built to work with different tools. These tools could be used to study the moon’s surface more closely.

Interest in space has been growing in Japan in recent years. Japanese space exploration company iSpace announced last April that it would transport an explorer belonging to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the moon in 2022. Japan’s iSpace will provide the lander to carry the UAE’s rover(探测器).

The company plans to launch the lander on a Falcon 9 rocket built by American company SpaceX. Japanese citizens followed the trip to space last year of billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. He spent 12 days aboard the International Space Station. Maezawa also plans in the future to orbit around the moon on a SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft.

Toyota engineer Shinichiro Noda said he thinks the lunar project can extend the company’s tradition of serving customers to a place beyond Earth. He said Toyota currently has vehicles almost everywhere. “But this is about taking our cars to somewhere we have never been, ” Noda said.

27What’s the ultimate purpose of the Lunar Cruiser project?

ATo better human life. BTo make safe vehicles.

CTo prove the previous idea. DTo transform communication.

    28What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?

AJapan’s enthusiasm in space. BJapan’s achievements in space.

CJapan’s potential in space travel. DJapan ’s ambition to explore space.

29What’ s Shinichiro Noda’s attitude towards the lunar project?

    ANegative. BDoubtful.

    CCautious. DPositive.

30Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

AJapanese Curiosity in Moon Travel Generated

BGreat Contribution Made in Exploring Mars

CRover Built by Toyota to Be Landed on Mars

DToyota to Help Develop Vehicle to Explore Moon

    D

The Amazon rainforest, is as undisturbed a place as most people can imagine, but even there, the effects of a changing climate are playing out. Now, research suggests that many of the region's most sensitive bird species are starting to evolve in response to warming.

Birds are often considered sentinel(哨兵)species-meaning that they indicate the overall health of an ecosystem-so scientists are particularly interested in how they're responding to climate change. In general, the news has not been good. For instance, a 2019 report by the National Audubon Society found that more than two-thirds of North America's bird species will be in danger of extinction by 2100 if warming trends continue on their current course.

For the new study, researchers collected the biggest dataset so far on the Amazon's resident birds, representing 77 non-migratory species and lasting the 40 years from 1979 to 2019. During the study period, the average temperature in the region rose, while the amount of rainfall declined, making for a hotter, dryer climate overall. According to the report on November 12 in the journal Science Advances, 36 species have lost substantial weight, as much as 2 percent of their body weight per decade since 1980. Meanwhile, all the species showed some decrease in average body mass, while a third grew longer wings.

Because of the study's long time series and large sample sizes, the authors were able to show the morphological(形态学的)effects of climate change on resident birds. However, the researchers themselves are unsure and wonder what advantage the wing length changes give the birds, but suppose smaller birds may have an easier time keeping cool. In general, smaller animals have a larger rate of surface area to body size, so they dissipate more heat faster than a bigger animal. Less available food, such as fruit or insects, in dryer weather might lead to smaller body size.

31Why are scientists fond of doing research on birds?

AThey have small body sizes. BThey are sensitive to hot weather.

CThey live in an undisturbed rainforest. DThey are ecological balance indicators.

32What can we learn from the new study?

AA third of species have been extinct for a decade.

B36 species lost 2%of their body weight every year.

CTwo-thirds of species showed a considerable decrease in weight.

DAbout 26 species responded to climate change with longer wings.

33What does the underlined word "dissipate" in the last paragraph mean?

APut off. BGive off. CPut away. DGive away.

34What would probably the researchers further study?

AWhy it is easier for smaller animals to keep cool.

BWhat effects the wing length changes have on birds.

CWhy the Amazonian birds have lost substantial weight.

DWhether bird species in North America will be extinct in 2100.

How to Be a Good Upstairs Neighbor

One must remember to be polite when living in an apartment building. You may unintentionally bother your neighbors with actions that you think to be harmless. ____35____ Living upstairs, you must always be aware that everything you do may be heard by those who live below. This doesn’t mean that you have to completely change your lifestyle, though.

____36____ This will greatly reduce the sound of your footsteps, thus limiting the sound your downstairs neighbor will hear. You should always remember to change your shoes when entering your apartment to ensure that your downstairs neighbor doesn’t hear you walking around.

Place carpets in your apartment if you have hardwood floors. Doing so is another way to decrease the sound of steps coming from an upstairs apartment. You can also put your furniture on these carpets. ____37____

Close your windows when you can. A floor is usually about three meters high, so it’s quite easy to hear your conversations. ____38____ Therefore, whenever you are watching TV or listening to a radio, try to keep your windows closed as much as possible.

Do your cleaning on weekend afternoons. ____39____ Doing such housework at 3:00 pm on a Saturday is much better than doing so at 9:30 on a Tuesday night.

AWear slippers while in your upstairs apartment.

BIt becomes much easier when your windows are open.

CNo matter what you do, consider your neighbor’s requirements.

DThere’ll be a time when you will run a cleaner to clean your room.

EThis is especially true for those people who live above an apartment.

FIt will disturb your downstairs neighbor who has to work the next morning.

GThis keeps your furniture from moving around, thus limiting noise a downstairs neighbor may hear.

    第三部分  书面表达(共两节,32分)

    第一节(共4小题;第4041题各2分,第423分,第435分,共12分)

    阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。

It’s after midnight and you’ve been studying all day. Empty energy drinks line the table and you sigh, “Tomorrow, I’ m getting ice cream. I deserve to treat myself.”

This year, the so-called “treat yourself culture” has expanded far beyond what was once a reward-based mindset. Now, “treating yourself” has become more about stress-caused indulgence (放纵). It represents the more deep-seated issues with the stress we regularly put ourselves under.

The root of the problem lies in our belief that we should be doing more work if it isn’t hard enough. Especially at a top university, I constantly find myself wanting to do more. I want more credits, a higher-grade point average, and more responsibilities I’ll later use as conversation topics in interviews. This drive is by no means a bad thing. We all are trying to eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a more enjoyable life. However, there are a lot of problems with this logic. Without sounding completely hopeless and pessimistic, it is possible that the future we imagine in our twenties will not become reality. Therefore, it is important to integrate things that make us happy with work, school or life induced stress.

Psychology certainly supports this belief. While having good self-control was positively associated with happiness, being able to enjoy life’s little pleasures without feeling ashamed of doing so is just as important. For example, even if you have a busy schedule of work, make time to stop by your favorite coffee shop or spend ten minutes to go on a walk outdoors.

I cannot urge you to give up your late nights of studying, energy drinks and all. I cannot tell you to always choose to do something that makes you happy over something you have or should do. Frankly, this is just not the way life works. We have to put up with the hard work and put in the time. Without pain, we’d also lose happiness and joy. It’s all about balance.

So, instead of looking at everything as a way to handle the stress and something to “treat myself”, let’s try to make treating ourselves a far more common practice in the busy lives we lead.

40What causes the so-called “treat yourself culture”?

41What does “this logic” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

42Decide which part of the following statement is wrong. Underline it and explain why.

    • Working hard plays a more important role in a happy life than enjoying life’s little pleasures.

43Are you a follower of “treat yourself culture”? Why or why not? (In about 40 words)
