1 Let me tell you about five of the enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum,let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with drifting:you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain.
The second enemy we face is indecision(优柔寡断). Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future.Take a sword to this enemy.
The third enemy inside is doubt.Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believe everything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities. , they doubt themselves.I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart.Doubt is all enemy.Get rid of it.
The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some.Just don’t let it conquer you.Instead, let it alarm you.Worry can be useful. If you step off the curb (路边) in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries:drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it.Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back.
The fifth enemy is overcaution. It is the timid (胆小的) approach to life.Timidity is not a virtue;it’s an illness. If you let it go,it’ll conquer you.Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace. You’ve got to avoid overcaution.

例2 阅读表达
阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。
[1]Cooking carrots whole before chopping them up increases their anti-cancer properties by 25 percent, researchers say.
[2]Leaving the vegetable intact (完整的) prevents valuable nutrients from being easily washed away into water. They can then be chopped up once cooked without loss of nutrients.
[3]Carrots have long been prized for their health benefits, especially their vitamin and fiber content. They contain huge amounts of carotenoids(类胡萝卜素)which are converted into vitamin A in the body. They are also an excellent source of the anti-cancer compound falcarion (镰叶芹醇). In a previous study, Dr Kirsten Brandt found rats fed on a diet containing carrots or isolated falcarino were less likely to develop tumors than those which were not.
[4]They also found that carrots boiled before they were cut contained 25 percent more falcarino than those that were chopped up first. Carrots which are cut have a higher surface area in contact with water, resulting in greater loss of nutrients, compared with boiling them whole. The heat softens the cell walls in the vegetable, allowing vitamins and falcarino to leach (过滤)out.
[5]Dr Brandt said, "The great thing about this is that it's a simple way for people to increase their uptake of a compound, which is good for you. All you need is a bigger saucepan. Naturally occurring sugars, responsible for giving the carrots its sweet flavor, were also found in higher concentration in carrots that had been cooked whole."
[6]The team also carried out a taste on almost 100 volunteers comparing carrots boiled before being cut and some that are cut up first. More than 80 percent of volunteers said that carrots cooked whole tasted much better.
[7]Boiling carrots whole appears to help them keep more of the nutrients. This is really a piece of good news because the method is of great value. Some other vegetables, such as parsnips (欧洲萝卜) which are from the same family and have a roughly similar size and texture can also be more nutritious by ____.
1. What’ s the main idea of the passage? (No more than 10 words)
2. Complete the following statement with proper words. (No more than 2 words)
can be kept by maintaining the vegetable whole when we are washing it.
3. Fill in the blank in Paragraph 7 with proper words. (No more than 3 words)
4. Why do people regard carrots as healthful vegetables? (No more than 8 words)
5. What does the word "those line 2, paragraph 4) probably refer to? (No more than 2 words)
【答案】
小题1:Cooking carrots whole.//A better/ healthier way to cook carrots.

[1] Usually when your teacher asks a question there is only one correct answer. But there is one question that has millions of correct answers. That question is “What’s your name?” Everyone gives a different answer but everyone is correct. Have you ever wondered about people’s names? Where do they come from? What do they mean?
[2] People’s first names or given names are chosen by their parents. Sometimes the name of a grandparent or other member of the family is used. Some parents ______________________. A boy could be named George Washington Smith; a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones.
[3] Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means “bright”; Beatrice means “one who gives happiness”; Donald means “world ruler”; Leonard means “as brave as a lion”.
[4] The earliest last names or surnames were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near a brook(小溪);someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.
[5] Other early surnames came from people’s occupations. The most common occupational name is Smith which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are: Carter — a person who owned or drove a cart; Potter —a person who made pots and pans.
[6] The ancestors of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter’s great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.
[7] Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin or their size or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John who was very tall could call himself John Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.
[8] Some family names were made by adding something to the father’s name. English-speaking people added –s or –son. The Johnsons are descendants of John; the Roberts family’s ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O’Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.

She has been volunteering her time and talents to such enterprises foe more than 40 years.
After working in the business world for a while, Low got fed up. So she turned to teaching at a technical school and later moved into the library.

Doris’s contribution as a skilled volunteer through her rich voice and her high degree of accuracy in the hundreds of books she has brailled and proofread over the years--- and she is still doing so,” said a CNIB official.

A piece of news caught my eye:NASA was holding an essay contest to name its Mars rover(火星探测器).Before I even knew anything else about it,a single word flooded my 11-year-old mind,Curiosity.
I couldn’t want for the bell to ring so I could get started on my essay. That afternoon,I raced home, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached. “Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone’s mind...”

Recent research suggests that if an argument gets resolved, the emotional response tied to it is significantly reduced or almost completely erased. Thus,it may be worth bringing up issues with your friends, family members,or classmates rather than holding them back.
There is a difference between arguing and fighting.Arguing is that you and your opponent present your concerns and discuss the feelings and issues related to those concerns. You can engage in an argument respectfully without stirring up(激起) anger.Fighting, however, usually involves personal attacks, raising of voices, and storming out.Discussing your issues and resolving them instead of stuffing them down can improve your emotional health. In a study,2.000 people were asked to record their feelings and experiences for eight days in a row. When people had an argument that they considered resolved, they had half the reactivity (情绪反应) of those who avoided an argument.Reactivity is an increase in negative emotions or a decrease in positive emotions. In other words, resolving an argument cuts your negative feelings by half. One day later, people who had a resolved argument reported no increase of negative emotions compared with those who avoided an argument. This means that resolving an argument can feel like you have reached a state of resolution—and you are less likely to be annoyed.
Moreover, the older you are,the more likely you will come to a resolution after an argument. This may be because more life experience usually leads to more defined priorities. You are more likely to distinguish between what matters and what does not.
It is easier to avoid a discussion, but risking talking about it may eventually lead to a better outcome.
40. According to this passage, what is arguing?
41. Why is it that“the older you are, the more likely you will come to a resolution after an argument”?
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Resolving arguments can improve your emotional health, because it increases your reactivity and reduces the chance of you getting angry.
43. In addition to improving emotional health, what do you think are some other benefits of resolving an argument? (In about 40 words)
【答案】

41.It is because more life experience may help people better identify priorities in life.
42. Resolving arguments can improve your emotional health, because it increases your reactivity and reduces the chance of you getting angry.----Resolving arguments helps to decrease your reactivity.
