The village of Misfat al-Abriyeen has changed its fortunes by transforming mud-brick homes into fine hotels. The village of 800 people, located on the cliffs of Oman's "Grand Canyon," opened its narrow streets six years ago to foreigners and locals seeking adventure in the deserts and green corners of the Gulf area.
Villager Yacoub al-Abri said it all started in 2010 when his uncle suggested they take another look at the mud houses that had lain ignored for years in the ancient settlement about three hours' drive from the capital Muscat. The owners had abandoned the centuries-old homes, fearing they could ,and moved to the opposite side of the village where they built new accommodation.
The brown-walled homes, made of mud bricks with palm-leave roofs, were turned into simple but elegant inns with wood furniture and handcrafts made using skills handed down from their ancestors. "We started with only five rooms, then we increased the number and bought other old houses.Today we have 15 rooms and there are plans to continue expanding until we reach 50," Abri said.
At an altitude of more than 1,000 meters, the tiny village which is home to the Abri tribe is a charming collection of traditional houses located along dozens of small alleys(小巷)overlooking lands bursting with banana plants and citrus and palm trees. It is part of a region known as the Grand Canyon of Oman where tourists can hike the rocky mountains and valleys, and explore the old ways of local people. The region is also famed for its centuries-old stories that are still widely told in similar villages across the country.
Renoda,a Dutch psychologist living in Muscat, was visiting with three of her friends. "It's perhaps the 10th time that I have visited this hotel since last year.I come here for a night or two every month seeking calm, relaxation and comfort," she told AFP.

During the holiday season, many of us feel pressure to find our loved ones the "perfect" gift. Why?Because gift-giving has long been considered a prime way to express love. However, recent research suggests that small acts of kindness, like a kind word, hugging a child or receiving sympathy, make people feel most loved and supported.
In the study,495 men and women between the ages of 18 and 93 completed a questionnaire evaluating 60 possible ways that people can feel love. The storyboards included situations like spending time with friends, receiving gifts, and spending time in nature. The survey also included negative interactions, like being controlled and criticized (批评) by others.
The findings highlight the psychological benefits that close relationships can offer. In fact, study participants ranked human interaction as a more significant expression of love than receiving material items, like presents.Connecting with others was also rated more highly than getting positive feedback on the Internet, indicating that people get the most support from personal human contact.
"During the holidays, anxiety rises, making it harder to remain present with ourselves and others. However, the power of spending time with another person is a gift we can give at any moment," says Dr.Carla Naumburg,a mindfulness coach and social worker in Newton,Mass. He suggests balancing party planning and online shopping with moments of human connection.Activities like reading to a child, meeting a friend for a walk,or taking a moment to call a family member, are ways to express love and care and can keep us emotionally grounded.
While the idea of offering loved ones the gift of our time may pale in comparison to giving them a generous present, recent research shows shared human experiences can tighten social bonds.Despite personality differences, most people agree on what makes us feel loved-the presence of our loved ones.
8. What does the text mainly focus on? ______
A. Gift and holiday economy.
B. Social and personal relationships.
C. Stress and human progress.
D. Selfish and generous love.
9. What can we know about the questionaire? ______
A. About 500 men participated in it.
B. Participants disliked negative interactions.
C. A wide range of age groups got involved.
D. Participants had limited ways to feel love.
10. What does Dr.Carla Naumburg intend to tell us? ______
A. People often find it difficult to stay with others.
B. Face to face connection is a gift to show love.
C. Reading to a child is the best way to convey love and care.
D. Balancing holiday activities with relaxation is recommended.
11. What might be the best title of the text? ______
A. Gift-giving is already out of date.
B. Social interaction lights up your holidays.
C. It is not presents but presence that counts.

A strong coffee after a poor night's sleep is the many people need in the morning but new research suggests that it might be best to have a bite to eat first.
A study has found that drinking coffee first can have a negative effect on blood sugar control - a risk factor for diabetes(糖尿病)and heart disease.
"We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee --- subjectively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee," said Professor James Betts,at the University of Bath in the UK.
For their study, researchers at the University of Bath got 29 healthy men and women to take part in three different overnight experiments, with at least a week between them.
In one,the participants had a normal night's sleep, roughly from 11 p.m.to 7 a.m.,and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking in the morning. They then experienced an interrupted night's sleep, where the researchers woke them every hour for five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to respond - and upon waking were given the same sugary drink.
On another night, participants experienced the same sleep interruption, but this time were first given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
They found that one night of interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood sugar and insulin(胰岛素)responses when compared to the normal night's sleep-- although previous research suggested that losing many hours of sleep or many nights of poor sleep could have a negative effect. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast actually increased the blood sugar response by around 50% - suggesting that relying on coffee after a bad night to stop feeling sleepy could limit your body's ability to tolerate the sugar in your breakfast.
12. What does the underlined word "kick-start" in paragraph 1 refer to? ______
A. A kind of sport. B. A kind of power.
C. A kind of medicine. D. A kind of belief.
13. What was unchanged in the three experiments? ______
A. The duration of sleep. B. The blood sugar response.
C. The sugary drink. D. The intake of coffee.
14. What increased the participants' blood sugar response most before breakfast? ______
A. A normal sugary drink. B. A normal night's sleep.
C. An interrupted night's sleep. D. A cup of strong black coffee.
15. How did researchers draw the conclusion? ______
A. By comparing the results.
B. By listing some examples.
C. By surveying the participants.
D. By referring to some documents.

Take a stranger into my photo
Maybe we all live in each other' spaces.Perhaps this is what the photo I took during a summer holiday is for:if you treat others with patience and tolerance, then you'll likely be repaid in another space.
Fifteen years ago,I took a trip in Lecce in southern Italy that summer.Lecce is an important stage for art and culture lovers.Walking in the city center is a dive into the past, between churches and antique buildings that keep precious details and decorations.More importantly,it's an ideal place for photographers.
One morning.I got up early enough for a panoramic(全景的)view of the sunrise.the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees. After climbing up a hill,I paused lo catch my breath and then positioned(摆好位置) myself to take the rest photo of this panorama.
Unluckily,I was about to take out my camera when suddenly a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view.Like me,I thought, this woman was here to stop for a short rest, and enjoy the scenery.Beyond my expectation, she stood still as if something caught her eye,not noticing anyone else's presence around her.
Patient as I was, after about 10 minutes, with my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take,I got bored. Was it too much to ask her to move aside so that I could take just one picture of the landscape?Of course,I could have asked her,but something prevented me from doing so.She seemed so content in her observation that I didn't have the heart to mess with that.
Another 10 minutes passed. However, the woman was still there.I grew frustrated.I decided to take the photo anyway. With an unwilling touch of the shutter(快门),I left in low spirits.
