Greg was driving one morning when he hit ice and collided (碰撞) with Cecilly Rudalavage of Ambler, Pennsylvania. No one was injured, and Greg was extremely apologetic as he and Cecilly examined their cars. As they spoke, Cecilly couldn’t help but notice that Greg had very few teeth in his mouth.
Greg had fallen victim to “ one bad dentist after another ” , leading to a lifetime of poverty, pain, food restrictions, and embarrassment. He seldom smiled or even opened his mouth, if he could help it. His self-confidence had been knocked down at every turn. “ My ex-wife told me not to smile at the wedding and it was embarrassing. ” he recalled.
The reason why Cecilly noticed and asked about his teeth was because she happened to be a dental implant (植牙) sales representative for Ditron Dental, USA and sold the same dental implant that Greg desperately needed! Cecilly decided on the spot to do something for the stranger. She reached out to her employer, who agreed to cover the cost of the dental components. She then contacted Dr. Simon Oh, an implant surgeon, who was known for doing charity work. Dr. Oh agreed to help, and they set a date.
Dr. Oh and his team performed Greg’s surgery after hours and free of charge. Using state-of-the-art technology, they created a 3D model of Greg’s skull (颅骨), which they used to fit him with permanent implants. Greg’s new smile was pretty beautiful! Better yet, he’s finally able to eat his favorite foods again and greet everyone he meets with a smile.
Cecilly was glad she was able to help a fellow human in need. She’s incredibly thankful to everyone who donated their time, effort, and products to give Greg his brilliant new smile. “ If it wasn’t for everybody willing to work at no cost, then this wouldn’t have happened for Greg. ”
Of all the cars Greg could have hit, he happened to hit the one driven by a dental implant sales representative! That’s what we call a “ happy accident ” .

Science experiments don’t always go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from them. Recently, Australian scientists learned something unexpected about magpies (喜鹊) when they tried to attach trackers to them to learn more about their habits.
The birds the scientists hoped to study were Australian magpies. They’re medium-sized black and white birds from the same bird “ family ” as crows and bluejays, live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in. The researchers were eager to try a new tracker on the magpies. They hoped to learn more about how far the birds flew and what they did during a normal day.
It’s hard to find trackers that work well with small and medium- sized birds. Either the trackers are too heavy, or don’t last long enough. The new trackers were light and could be recharged without wires while they were still on the birds.
The researchers placed trackers on five magpies. But just ten minutes after setting up the last magpie, they noticed something unusual. “ an adult female magpie was helping another magpie get free from its trackers. In a few hours, none of the birds had trackers anymore. The birds outsmarted us. ” said Dominique Potvin, one of the scientists.
The scientists were disappointed about the trackers, but they realized that the magpies had taught them something else: that magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird who is helping doesn’t get a reward. This is called “ rescue behavior ” , and this is the first time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies.
The researchers are glad they’ve learned about the rescue behavior of magpies. But now they need to try again to figure out a good way to track these for Australian magpies.
28. Why did the researchers try to put the new trackers on magpies?
A. To preserve magpies’ habitat. B. To study magpies’ living habits.
C. To introduce the migration of magpies. D. To prove magpies’ biological diversity.
29. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. The problems of the trackers. B. The process of making trackers.
C. The technology of tracking birds. D. The comparison of old and new trackers.
30. What can we conclude from Dominique Potvin’s words?
A. Magpies solve problems quickly. B. Magpies tend to help each other.
C. Magpies are smarter than humans. D. Magpies are curious about trackers.
31. What is scientists’ attitude towards the discovery of magpies’ rescue behavior?
A. Doubtful. B. Tolerant. C. Satisfied. D. Disappointed.
D
For anyone who’s sat through a two-hour lecture at 9 am, it will come as no surprise to hear that dark, dirty and stuffy (闷热) classrooms are terrible environments to learn in. A new study has found that cool, airy, and bright classrooms with good acoustics (声效) have the power to significantly boost the quality of learning and even have an impact on test scores.
Researchers at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands took a look at 21 different pieces of high-quality research from across the world that explored how a teaching environment can affect the quality of teaching and learning at colleges and universities.
The findings, reported in the journal Indoor Air, suggest that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to making a perfect classroom environment. For example, a lengthy philosophy lecture is likely to require a different environment than a hands-on chemistry lesson. Therefore, classrooms should provide multiple indoor environmental conditions to facilitate educational processes.
However, the literature review did find some common themes of what makes optimal learning environment, namely a relatively cool, bright, and quiet environment that has sufficient air with low carbon dioxide concentrations. Acoustics was also found to be an important factor, with one study finding that unwanted noises in the classroom may decrease students’ academic performance by as much as 34 percent.
The researchers argue that students who are taught in these kinds of good classrooms also tend to experience an improved academic performance, scoring higher on attention or concentration tests, and performing better in academic tests. However, they were not able to confirm or reject the claim that classrooms can influence the quality of teaching due to a lack of evidence.
In light of their findings, the researchers hope to inspire those involved in renovation (翻新) or new construction of school buildings in a bid to make better classrooms and more productive environments.
32. What is the main finding of the new study?
A. High-quality teaching is the key to test scores.
B. Most students are tired of the lengthy lectures.
C. Environment is related to the quality of teaching.
D. Classroom conditions affect the quality of learning.
33. Why does the author mention the example in paragraph 3?
A. To present a fact. B. To explain a research result.
C. To provide a solution. D. To make a conclusion.
34. What does the underlined word “ optimal ” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Imaginary. B. Stuffy. C. Ideal. D. Identical.
35. Which of the following can best describe the researchers’ expectation?
A. Making a perfect test environment. B. Seeking more evidence for the study.
C. Improving college academic atmosphere. D. Creating better classroom environments.

Nike was a wheel dog who was directly in front of the sled (雪橇) and take most of the force. Whether little Nike had been named after the athletic shoe or the Greek goddess of victory, I would never know. He came into my life due to an injury in one of his legs which prevented him from making the team for the Trail Sled Dog Race.
My lifelong dream was to become a mountain man. So this winter, my wife Cheryl and I headed into the mountains with supplies to live for five months. In January, we had begun pushing east toward an untraveled area of the Yukon River. The trapping prospects there looked promising. We returned to our main cabin and made plans for me to use Cheryl’s dogs, hooking (钩) them together to form a large team. The idea was to bring supplies several miles down the river and establish a permanent camp.
That meant I’d be traveling alone and driving a sled loaded with around 300 pounds of goods, which meant extra hard work for my wheeler, Nike. The first serious challenge in our trip came where the path went down a steep valley that led to the river. As we started down, I stood on the brake with all of my weight in an attempt to keep balance. But the heavy sled began overtaking the dogs, and they picked up their pace to stay ahead of it. The sled became faster and faster until we came to a sharp turn at the bottom of the hill.
Eventually, the dogs got entangled (缠结) with each other and the sled got stuck in a crack in the river ice. I emerged from a large snowdrift and assessed the damage. I expected to find my dogs and a broken sled. But the sled was fine, and the dogs had jumped over each other, freeing themselves from the tangled ropes. Nike emerged from’ the snow, shook himself off, looked at me with encouraging eyes and made me smile.

第四部分 写作
第一节
【参考范文】
A community activity
To raise the awareness of serving the people in the community, our school student association organized a community service last Sunday. In the morning, we, together with the community staff, went to visit several old people who lived all alone in our neighborhood. While we were in their home, we helped do a thorough cleaning, sweeping the floor and tidying the house. Tired as we were, we felt happy as the old people praised us with bright smiles. This activity helped us recognize the significance of labor.
第二节
【参考范文】
Now I have to save myself from the icy river. As the sled sank beneath me, I tried to jump toward the edge of the ice, but failed and I had to prepare myself for a swim. To my astonishment, the water was only up to my knees, and there was very little current. When we finally came to the safety of the riverbank, I felt helpless and hopeless. The cold was rapidly deepening into my muscles, and I realized that my chances of survival were slim.
I had begun to accept that this was how I was going to die, but Nike wouldn’t have it. He ran in front of the sled and wagged his tail, ready to start again. I looked into his eyes and could swear he was smiling. I gathered my courage and tried to start a huge fire. Later as I recalled my experience in the warmth of my sleeping bag, I wondered whether I’d have survived if not for Nike and his attitude. Nike taught me that attitude is everything in the game of wilderness survival. And indeed he saved me!

Text 10
One problem that young people face in their last year of school or when they start work is how to manage their time. Here are some suggestions that Oxford University expert Franklin Greaves has listed.
Learning how to manage your time effectively can help you feel more relaxed, focused and in control. Before you start, you should figure out what your goals are. Let me clarify this. You need to figure out what you have to do and how and when you intend to do it. It is not enough to set a deadline for completing the work. You must also set a start date. Without the start date you can’t know when the work will be finished.
To work out the dates you will need a plan, and it is important to try to keep to the plan. Stay focused on the results and, where possible, concentrate on the more important points, but make sure you get some time to rest, too. For instance, take regular tea and lunch breaks or go for a short walk to clear your mind.
