One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.
We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide range of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,
“May I get you something?”
“A coffee would be nice.”
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,
“How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?”
“Who?”
“The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.”
I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men!
My few minutes with Mr. Gallbreath changed my life. Now I try to treat everyone with respect, no matter who I think they are, and to meet another human being with kindness and sincerity.

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries- like the UK or France- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
28. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to __________.
A. develop closer relations
B. share the same culture
C. get to know each other
D. learn their countries
29. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that __________
A. the English prefer to make long speeches
B. too many words are of no use
C. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature
D. even talk and silence can be culturally different
30. According to the passage, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?
A. By sharing different ways of life
B. By accepting different habits
C. By recognizing different values.
D. By speaking each other’s language
31. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Better working environmentB. Cultural differences
C. How to understand each otherD. How to build up a relationship
D
The novel coronavirusoutbreak has spread far and wide. As of March 17, there had been over 180, 000 reported cases in more than 130 countries.
As more areas become affected, you may have noticed that countries are fighting the virus differently. This is because countries have their own unique laws and healthcare systems. Even though they are different, they all share the same goal of keeping people safe and healthy.
In Southeast Asia, there are many different types of healthcare systems. Take Singapore as an example. The government runs hospitals that provide basic healthcare. It is cheap but people can pay extra for private rooms and better service.
Medical treatment in Singapore is paid for in a very interesting way. First, workers save money in required savings accounts. Then, this money can be used to pay for things like healthcare, housing and education.
In Europe, many countries have universal healthcare. In this type of system, this costs of healthcare are usually covered by taxes. In this way, the rich help pay for the poor and younger people help pay for the elderly. Universal healthcare helps reduce medical costs for anyone who may need to see a doctor or get treatments.
“We live in a system in which we guarantee health and the right of everyone to be cured,”Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said. “It’s a basis, a pillar (支柱), and I’d say a characteristic of our system of civilization.”
The United states, however, does not have universal healthcare. Instead, many US citizens have healthcare through private insurance or government programs.
“Dealing with the coronavirus with tens of millions of people without health insurance…will be a uniquely American challenge among developed countries,” Larry Levitt, the executive vice president for health policy at Kaiser Family Foundation wrote on Twitter (推特).
Healthcare systems are designed to help people who are sick. But if too many people get sick at once, it can be difficult for countries with even the best healthcare systems to handle.
32.Why does the author mention Singapore?
A. To promote its medical treatment. B.To share its healthcare practices.
C. To introduce its society system. D. To study its medical system.
33. Where do the costs of healthcare in Europe usually come from?
A. The government’s Taxes. B. The citizens’ donations.
C. Bank savings accounts. D. Medical insurance.
34. What do Larry Levitt’s words on Twitter indicate?
A. Developed countries need more healthcare.
B. America will lose control of the coronavirus.
C. Health insurance is troubling many countries.
D. The coronavirus is challenging American health policy.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Attitudes to Basic Healthcare
B. Ways to Handlethe Novel Coronavirus
C. Novel Coronavirus Spreading Worldwide
D. Global Healthcare Facing New Challenges

Dear Tom,
Here comes a piece of good news. The Chinese Summer Camp, which is intended for international students, is going to be held in our school this summer vacation. Since you are obsessed with Chinese culture, I’d like to invite you to join it.
The Camp is scheduled to take place in the Grand Hall of our school, from July 18 to July 28,
lasting 11 days. It covers a wide variety of cultural activities, ranging from studying Chinese daily
expressions to attending some lectures on Chinese history and traditional culture. As we all know, language is closely related to culture, so I’m convinced that you can dig out Chinese cultural features from language study. In addition, the Camp provides a chance for you to visit some famous museums, which is the best way to learn about the country. By admiring the historical relics, you will definitely gain a better understanding of the country.
If you want to be part of it, please sign up for it before July 2 at our school website. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: OK. (10) And don’t forget about the bird area!
M: We may not make it to the birds. I told your mother we would meet her at the Zoo’s Restaurant at 5 o’clock. We have to have dinner and then leave before the zoo closes at 6 o’clock. (11) It’s 4 o’clock now, so we just have an hour to visit some of the animals.
W: All right, Daddy! We are losing time sitting in this parking lot. Let’s go buy ticketsand get inside! (12)
M: Right. Let’s go. (12)
Text 9
W: To start with, tell me about your education, please.
M: All right. I will graduate from Columbia University next year. I’m majoring in international business. (13)
W: Are you single or married?
M: I’m still single. I’d rather have a career before I start a family.
W: That’s the kind of man we are looking for. Our work requires a lot of travel.(14)So, do you mind going on business trips? There will be six to ten trips abroad every month.
M: Six to ten? Hmm...that is quite a lot…
W: Yes. This job is not for everyone.
M: Uh… I think it will be a challenge for me,(15)but I can do it. At least I’ll never be bored!
W: Good. Well, it has been most pleasant talking with you. We’ll inform(告知) you of our final decision in three days. (16)
M: Thank you, Mrs. Hudson. I hope to see you soon.
W: Goodbye.
Text 10
I was walking around the other day when I saw a sign(招牌) for The Bookworm. It’s a really cool café that has great food,(17) and sometimes they have music and other special events. Well, I happened to hear that Peter Hessler was going to be speaking at 7:30 that very night. Peter Hessler is probably my favorite writer at the moment. He used to write about China for The New Yorker, and he also wrote 3 books about his experiences living and working in Beijing. I was so excited to hear him speaking that I went right over to The Bookworm at 7:00,(18) (19) took a seat at the bar, and waited for him to arrive. I waited and waited, but he didn’t show up. Finally, at 8:30, I asked one of the staff when Peter Hessler was supposed to be there. (19) “Peter Hessler?” he replied, “He’s not supposed to be here tonight. He was here last month, though.” It was then that I realized my mistake. I had come on the right day, just not in the right month! (20)
★ Peter Hessler:美国记者,出生于美国匹兹堡,成长于密苏里州。曾任《纽约客》驻北京记者,著作有关于当代中国的三部曲《消失中的江城》、《甲骨文》和《寻路中国》。
