Why Are Plane Seats Always Blue?
Planes are an engineering masterpiece. Since they were invented, they have made the world a better place. Like never before, we can travel to almost every corner of the world within hours.
____31____ The only time they land is when they need to get passengers on board or go through regular checks. This means the crew doesn’t have much time to clean up the plane. ____32____ Airlines are likely to go with dark blue fabric (布料)—it’s much more of a bother to clear up a red wine spill on white fabric than on blue.
Blue is also a color that can make passengers less anxious. If you are an 18-year-old teenager, you are probably not afraid of flying. But the aviation (航空) industry isn’t that old. ____33____ In fact, even today in the 21st century, 5% of the world’s population has ever flown on an airplane, which is extremely low. But that also means, most people are afraid of flying. Some statistics show that around 80 percent of people are scared to fly. ____34____ Compared to other means of transport such as cars, it’s a much safer option.
Anyway, people are afraid of heights. That’s why planes are purposefully designed in such a way to make you feel safe. For example, the color red is associated with objects to remind people of danger or to warn people that they need to stop. Green is used to make people aware of the presence of an emergency exit. ____35____
A. The airline business is expensive.
B. Unlike cars, planes are made to fly all the time.
C. Many airlines redesign or change their seats often.
D. Of course, it doesn’t make sense to be afraid of boarding a plane.
E. As recent as the 2000s, not many people had the opportunity to fly.
F. That’s why the seats must be designed in a way to look clean all the time.
G. But blue is a calm color associated with the positive qualities of trust and peace.

Why Are Tigers Orange?
The colors of an animal serve lots of different purposes — for instance, to help them hide into surroundings and escape from being noticed by preys (猎物). For tigers, their ability to be invisible will just decide whether they catch dinner or go hungry. ____31____
As for humans, orange is a color used for items that need to stand out, like traffic lights and safety vests. That’s because we have what’s called trichromatic color vision, which differentiate three types of color: blue, green and red. ____32____ But most other mammals, including dogs, horses and deer, have dichromatic (二色的) color vision for only two colors: blue and green. Humans who get information only of blue and green are considered color-blind, and can’t distinguish between red and green colors. ____33____
Mammals like deer are the tiger’s main prey, and their dichromatic vision means they don’t see tigers as orange — they see them as green. That makes the tiger much harder to spot as it’s prowling behind a bush or crouching in the grass. Although green tigers would probably be even harder to spot, evolution (进化) just doesn’t work with the ingredients necessary to make green fur. ____34____ The only recognizably green mammal is a sloth, and its fur isn’t green in fact. That’s an alga that grows in its fur.
____35____ There seems to be no evolutionary pressure, particularly for deer, which are the main prey of the tiger, to become trichromatic. That’s probably because the tiger doesn’t know it’s orange either. So, the evolutionary race really doesn’t exist for that color. It’s just that the tiger has evolved over the sweep of evolution to have a coloring, a hiding system, which protects it very well in its jungle setting.
A. Actually, there are no green furry animals.
B. Orange fur makes tigers relatively easy to spot.
C. The same is likely true for dichromatic animals.
D. Then, why don’t deer evolve the ability to see orange?
E. So, of all the colors they could be, why are tigers orange?
F. Colors of humans’ eyes are quite similar to many other mammals’.
G. We share this style of vision with some mammals like apes and certain monkeys.

Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.
● Read books from past eras.
____11____ Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Alert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said.
● ____12____
Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.”
● Shop at secondhand bookstores.
Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers. ____13____
● Check out authors’ reading lists.
In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading. ____14____ Mortimer wrote that “one way to understand them is to read the books they read.”
● Make the final decision by yourself
____15____ It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. Great authors are great readers.
C. Leave some room for older works.
D. Learn more about those great authors.
E. Don’t jump too quickly from book to book.
F. There’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow.
G. Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections than secondhand book owners.

The honest truth is that every person has many different parts of his or her personality that make up the whole person. For example, there are times when I am excited and noisy. At other times I like to be more quiet and reserved. During neither of these times am I being dishonest; just another aspect of my personality is coming out. And sometimes I behave differently depending on the social situation that I am in. For example, I am a pretty casual guy, so I really do prefer wearing jeans and T-shirts whenever possible. ____12____
This is not wearing a mask. It is just being respectful and appropriate to the situation. And there are even groups of people that bring out certain parts of my personality. For example, when I am hanging out with ray male friends, I can be loud and wild. But when I am at home with my wife and kids after a long day at work, I am much more reserved and quiet. ____13____Rather, I am just being socially appropriate, and sensitive to the people that I am with or the situation that I am in. How would you feel if you were sharing a personal story and noticed that your friend wasn't really listening? You probably wouldn’t be too excited. Without active listening, people often feel unheard and unacknowledged. ___11___
Listen without making judgements. Most people tend to judge others during conversations. ___12___ If you let your opinions come into play, they may ruin the conversation. ___13___ Physically showing that you’re listening doesn’t come naturally for everybody. But if someone is ready to open up to you, and you sit back with your arms crossed without saying a word, they’re not going to say much. To encourage someone to keep talking, focus on the speaker by turning your head and body to face them and by making eye contact.

If you're a sports enthusiast, you know the weight that home field advantage has on the performance of a team. ____11____ What gives any team an upper hand when they're playing at a home venue?
Crowd Effect
Crowd effect is one of the main causes behind home field advantage in sports. Imagine that you're walking into a stadium surrounded by people cheering for you. ____12____ Now, imagine that you are a member of the opposition. You have no support from the crowd and are basically on your own. One might argue that professional athletes are expert at staying focused and not letting such things affect them, but that isn't really the case.
Judge Bias
____13____All the cheering of the fans can pressure the referee into being more tolerant towards the home team. Meanwhile, the number of attacks on referees by angry fans cannot be overlooked. In an attempt to avoid making the crowd angry, referees tend to have a small bias in favor of the home team, leading them to call fewer fouls on them, give them more free kicks, etc.
Travel Effect and Familiarity
Traveling long distances puts athletes under physical and psychological stress. This is especially true in the case of inter-continental matches, during which athletes must travel into different time zones, leaving them defenseless against jet-lag. On the other hand, the home team stays in its comfort zone, without having to undergo any disruption in their regular schedules. ____14____
Is There a Home Disadvantage?
The massive crowd support that the home team enjoys does come with a side effect performance pressure. The crowd greatly motivate athletes to perform better and achieve greater success. ____15____ The athletes' focus may get shifted from success to a fear of failure, thereby making them overcautious.
A. The cheering will greatly boost their confidence.
B. They applaud and celebrate every shot you take.
C. However, it may sometimes have the opposite effect.
D. Home field advantage is caused by many factors affecting athletes.
E. Therefore, the home team gets an upper hand over the visiting team.
F. It has been consistently found that players win more often when playing at home.
G. The massive crowd support that a home team gets often puts the judges in a tough spot.
