The movie that impressed me most is Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. Jules Verne(1828-1905)was born in Nantes, France. He had an innate love for the sea and for travel and adventure when he was a child. Later, he devoted himself to literature and wrote several scientific romances, which gained him the name—Father of Modern Science Fiction.

This is a movie of science fiction which tells us an exciting story about an English gentleman, Mr. Phileas Fog, who makes a bet with his club-mates and manages to travel around the world in eighty days. It gives us a vivid description of the many difficulties and incidents which happen on his journey.

From this story, we can see the author’s deep love for the sea, travel and adventure, which played an important role in his life. We are also astonished and convinced by his fertile imagination and scientific and geographical knowledge.

With the wide application of cable TV, now we have more than 70 channels available for us to choose to watch. About 2 months ago, I noticed a program, antiques road show, or treasures appraisal, I am not sure how to name it in English correctly, but it was really an educational TV program for me and truly aroused my interest.

This program is now very popular among people in China. You know, china has such a long history, and we really have a lot of antiques collected by the public. Many items shown in the program may never be seen anywhere else. Since many families do have their collections, but they are not so professional, they all want to have their collections, or their treasures, appraised by those experts. Outside the film studio, we can see many people are holding their treasures, waiting in queues, hoping that the things they hold can be truly priceless treasures in the eyes of those experts.

Then , when those treasures are handed to those experts, including one for drawings, one for calligraphy, one for china, and one for bronze ware, you know, they will tell us how to appraise a piece of antique, and what value it is now to us, as well as the market price of it.

Leaning those skills, seeing those antiques, sensing the great joy when a true antique is discovered, and sympathizing the pity when an item is defined as a fake, this TV program, does teach me a lot.

As far as I am concerned, Journey to the West is superior to any other book I have ever read.  Actually, it is a very famous romantic myth novel in China. It was adapted for television in 1986, and since then, this book has become more popular. There are three reasons for my preference for Journey to the West. Firstly, there are many wonderful stories in the book which made great impression on me. In addition, the contents and the meaning it conveys also attract my attention. Thanks to this book, I have learned that perseverance is the key to success. Last but not least, the structure of the novel is excellent. The whole novel is presented to readers through a series of independent but coherent stories.

For the reasons given above, took great interest in this fantastic novel which has been listed as one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

Where there is a will, there is a way

When it comes to how to succeed, many people may think of the proverb “Where there is a will, there is a way’, which means if you put your heart into something and spare no effort on it, you will find the way to success. Personally, J can’t agree with the proverb more.

Take my own experience for example. I was born in a poor family and both my parents are laid-off workers. SO I do cherish the opportunity I have to receive education and I always adopt that proverb to serve as a reminder that I can find a way to success through my constant efforts. Although I have come across huge barriers on my way, I am still going ahead with my school work. For example, I am buried in piles of textbooks and study around the clock to prepare for the College Entrance Examination. I believe that a good result of this exam can change not only my own fate but also the worrying situation of my family.

From this experience, I firmly believe that our future depends on our own strong will.

I have gladly received your letter telling me that you’re interested in traditional Chinese musical instruments .Now, I’d like to tell you something about the Chinese Zither, one of the most ancient Chinese musical instruments with a long history of over 2500 years.

The Chinese Zither is a plucked instrument and is played with both hands. In the early times it had 5 strings and has developed into 21 to 25 strings up to now.

The Chinese Zither has a wide range and sonorous sound. As its playing appears and sounds like playing the piano, the Chinese Zither is sometimes called “the Chinese piano”.
