December 5, 2012, was a very special day for Josephine and Scott Lansing, as it marked the fourth adoption for the Lansings.
When they began the journey to adopt their first daughter, Cloe, years ago, Josephine and Scott Lansing never imagined they would eventually have a house full of girls. The couple later adopted Josie in 2011 and Annabelle in 2012. For the Lansing family, adoption is about giving every child the opportunity to grow healthily in a loving home. Scott and Josephine are great advocates for each of their daughters, and they make sure each child knows how special and loved they are.
In February of 2009, Bethany entered into the care of Child Protective Services due to her mother's inability to care for her and her brothers and sisters. Her experiences made it very difficult for her to trust adults, since she learned from an early age that she could only count on herself. She lived in a shelter for several months before moving into a foster home (寄养家庭). Still, Bethany struggled to understand why she had been taken away from the only family she had known. In May of 2010, Bethany was placed at Helping Hand Home for Children's Residential Treatment Center, where her journey to returning to normal finally began. With the patience, support, and guidance of the Helping Hand Home staff, Bethany developed healthy, appropriate ways to express her emotions. She was taught to respect herself, and she learned that it was okay to trust others.
When Bethany was introduced to the Lansing family in June of 2012, the meeting did not go as smoothly as everyone hoped. Bethany's insecurities resurfaced due to the suffering she experienced at such a young age, and she refused to talk or even look at the Lansings at their first meeting.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】But the Lansing family had no intention to give up. They were patient with Bethany and explained that they wanted to get to know her better and hoped she would one day be part of their family. The other girls shared their stories of coming from the foster care system, and they told her how scared they had been about meeting a new family too and how happy they were now. Soon Bethany’s anxiety eased, and she agreed to go and see her new home. (77 words)
Later, Bethany experienced a lot of exciting things. From many hours spent at the neighborhood pool to her first trip to the beach, Bethany now lived the life every child deserves. The Lansings celebrated Bethany’s 11th birthday with a superb cruise. When Bethany returns to Helping Hand Home to visit, the first thing everyone comments on is her self-confidence. The little girl who was once afraid to make eye contact is now a secure, funny young lady who would talk your ear off. (77 words)

The old man turned away sadly as his eyes were filled with tears. “Poor Mr. Dev…,”thought Indra sympathetically. Another day went past and there was still no sign of his family. Indra wondered how children could be so careless as to lose a parent like this.
Indra recalled the day the old man was admitted to her ward. He was thin and weak. He could not produce his identity card but he claimed he remembered the number. The hospital tried to contact hig family using the phone number he offered but it was in vain. Mr. Dev was treated for a lung infection and was now recovering. Soon, it would be time for him to be discharged (出院). Where would he go then? He did not look strong enough to live independentiy. Indra thtew down the file she was holding as anger rose within her.
“What's the matter?” asked Poh, Indra's colleague. “I'm just upset about old Mr. Dev,” Indra replied. Poh nodded with understanding. As a more experienced nurse, she had seen many similar cases and learned to control her feelings.
“Don’t worry too much. The hospital has contacted the civil - administration department (民政部门) and offered the information about the missing man, Mr. Dev will be placed in an old folks'home if no one comes to pick him up.” Poh said, patting Indra's arm comfortingly. Indra sighed. “I know. Its just that he eagerly expects his family to visit him. He cleans and tidies himself every morning and sits up to wait expectantly. You can see the eagerness in his eyes whenever the door opens. At the end offte day he goes to sleep with tears in his eyes. It makes me cry inside.”
Poh shook her head sadly. “He needs a miracle (奇迹).”
A few days later, the doctor confirmed that Mr. Dev was fit enough to be discharged. Indra was informed that an administrator had been waiting downstairs, ready to take Mr. Dev to an old folks'home. With a heavy heart, Indra helped Mr. Dev to get ready.

【答案】He was still a bit weak, so Indra rolled a wheelchair to bring him downstairs. As always, the ward was neat and tidy, and the old fellow's eyes of expectations were fixed on the door. “Time to go, Mr. Dev...” Indra said, helped him sit down and pushed the wheelchair into the lift carefully. Her eyes were misty when she saw how sad the old man looked. She bent over and wiped his tears gently with a handkerchief. “Everything would be fine,” she reassured him. Then the flashing light indicated they were arriving at the ground level.
“Papa!” , a shaking voice cried out from a middle aged woman when the lift doors opened. She rushed forward and hugged the old man in the wheelchair. Both of them began to weep. Indra smiled through her tears. She later learnt that the daughter had just contacted the civil - administration department, where she got news about her missing father.Mr.Dev's eager expeclation had been answered. It was the miracle she had prayed for. Indra left the scene of the reunion and went to look for the administrator. She was eager to share with him the "bad" news that his trip to collect Mr.Dev was a wasted one.

Days of January were passing and every girl of the girls’ school was very happy as the selections for plays and dances for the annual function were started.
Sneha’s class teacher, Pravina, asked Sneha, her favorite student, to play the leading character in a play. Because she was never allowed to play a male character, Sneha jumped with joy, but suddenly she became so serious about the costumes (戏服).
“How many times I have to tell you not to participate in plays and dances! Can’t you understand that we can’t buy or borrow the costly costume? You can take part in debates, quizes, or essay competitions in which you don’t have to spend money and you can enrich your knowledge,” her mother said angrily when Sneha told her about it.
The reason behind all this was their financial condition. Sneha always had an idea about it in her home and she was mature enough to say NO to any money demanding condition. This time, however, the desire of fame and the excitement of the activity were overcoming her fear.
Sneha went in her room hiding her sadness deep in her heart. She was so nervous about what was going to happen when she would tell Pravina about leaving the play. Would she warn her not to allow her in any competition? Now it was clear that she had to leave the play.
The next day, downhearted Sneha acted like nothing had happened and got ready for school. Her mom ordered her to say NO for the play.
Sneha always loved Pravina because whenever there was a play or dance, the girls did not need to be worried about anything related with money. She would find a way to help. But Sneha didn’t want to tell her the truth.
Paragraph l:
Sneha went to the teacher,“I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.”

Paragraph 2:
Pravina stood patiently, waiting for the performance to begin.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Sneha went to the teacher, “I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.” Her voice was so determined that Pravina wondered why she had such a change in her attitude. “Mum says I can learn more if I take part in a debate,” she looked away, trying to hide her unwillingness. Soon, Pravina made out what really was shouting in Sneha’s deep heart. With a smile on her face, Pravina promised not only could she perform in the play but she would get the chance to join in the debate. She offered a hand to her, saying there happened to be a costume at home which could be lent to her. Excited secretly, she knew she was going to attend the show.
Pravina stood patiently, waiting for the performance to begin. She was waiting for the precious moment when Sneha appeared in the costume she bought for Sneha’s dream. As the light faded out, the lead role came on stage and caught the attention of all the audience. Confident and brave, she vividly brought the character to life. Everyone cheered and applauded when the show ended as Sneha’s first male character turned out a big success. When Sneha was ready to give back the costume to Pravina, she was told to keep it as a reminder of not easily letting go of dreams.

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped loose-fitting pajama (睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi said in a quiet voice, “Sorry, teacher,”and ran with quick short steps to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the loose-fitting pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response.

【答案】The music played on. Hamed peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly so much so that it sounded like a recording. Then an idea hit Hamed. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. It was a good chance for Mohi to show his talent and be accepted by his classmates. Thinking of that, Hamed left quietly.
Before Teacher’s Day concert, Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school’s clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin. When he started to play, the audience fell silent. Jaws dropped. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Mohi became a sensation and had many fans in his final year of school. Mohi and Hamed became the best of friends eventually.

DRUMMING WITH GRANDPA
Roger was filled with excitement as his mother told him his grandfather was on his way over. He always had fun together with his grandfather who once drummed in a band. They could make the whole house shake with their joyful music. Roger got excited and practiced drumming all morning.
Finally, Dad's car pulled up in front of the house. Upon hearing the car door opened. Roger shouted for joy from his bedroom window, "Hi, Grandpa! Listen to this!” Taking a deep breath, he raised his drumsticks and began rocking and rolling, just like Grandpa had taught him. Jumping up. he raced outside to his grandfather and asked, "Grandpa. what do you think? Are you ready to drum together?" Grandpa, giving Roger a hug, said. "It was wonderful, but I'm afraid I can't play right now.” Dad smiled at Roger, telling him some of Grandpa's finger joints were hurting him and that maybe he would want to play after a short rest. Roger didn't ask again.
After lunch, Roger went to his room to get his skateboard, finding someone had already stepped into the room. It was Grandpa who stood near the drum set. He picked up a drumstick and began to play. Thump! Thump! But just with two thumps, the drumstick fell onto the floor. Grandpa reached for it, trying to pick it up, but the drumstick fell out of his hand. He tried again and the same thing happened. Grandpa moved his red and swollen fingers, looking upset. Seeing this, Roger shut the door noiselessly. He walked to the sitting room where Dad was reading and asked Dad to drive him to his friend's house. "David has a drum with the pedal (踏板)and I'd like to borrow it," Roger told Dad about his plan. Dad got the car keys and off they went.

The drumstick swung forward. Thump! Thump! Thump! The pedal worked smoothly and the thumps filled the whole room. “Would you like to have a try?" Roger turned to Grandpa with his eyes full of expectation.
Slowly, Grandpa reached out his foot and pushed the pedal as Roger did. Thump! Thump! Grandpa smiled and continued with greater enthusiasm. “Join in, Roger!" Grandpa shouted to Roger excitedly and his cheerful voice was even louder than the drum rolls. Roger grinned from ear to ear as he picked up his drumsticks. He rocked and rolled, and so did Grandpa. With the drums beating merrily, their joyful music shook the whole house like before, not only the whole house, but also the hearts of the grand father and the grandson.

Two fast friends were Willie and his little dog Bounce. Willie could never think of taking a walk without Bounce. Cake and play were equally shared between them. Willie taught his dog many cunning tricks, and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk. Then on a bright summer afternoon, Willie had strolled with Bounce down to the river, which was not more than two blocks from his father’s store—Mr. Brown’s store.
Willie began to throw stones into the water, and to watch ripples as they made one circle after another. Bounce lay on the grass, watching the flies buzzing around his nose, and catching any that came too near.
There were some logs floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. He drew back, sent the stone with all strength, just as it left his hand, the log turned and he fell into the water. He was frightened, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one to hear, though he called as loud as he could for help.
If he had been a big water dog, he could have jumped in and brought his master out.

He ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking, looking first at Willie and then around. Then he started, as fast as he could run up the street to the store. When he got there the door was shut, but he scratched against it and barked loudly, until some one came and opened it. He caught hold of Mr. Brown’s clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping. Noticing the dog’s abnormal behavior, Mr. Brown realized something must have been wrong. He put on his hat and went with the dog. Bounce, seeing Mr. Brown take his hat, started for the river.
Para 2:
Finally, the father came to the river. He saw Willie’s hat floating on the water, and his small arm throw up. Without thinking twice, he sprang in and caught him just as he was going down for the last time, and quickly carried him to the bank. On the bank, Willie was given first aid and came to life after a while. When he got over his fright, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friends.

Ella’s First Fashion Creation
Ella was wearing a new dress and she felt like a famous model, Even better, it was a dress she made! Her very first piece of fashion!
“What do you think?” she asked her family. They were all gathered at the kitchen table for breakfast. “It’s very pretty. I can’t believe you designed and sewed that all by yourself!” Mom said.“I’m so proud of you! How long did that take?”Dad asked. Ella pulled out her chair and sat down.“Two weeks! But I think I could make the next one faster. I had a few problems.
Ella smiled. She had so many problems making the dress, but right now it was all worth it. It was going to be a great day.
The kids at school weren’t quite as excited about her dress as she thought they would be, but she did get some nice comments from some of the girls, so she was happy about that. The day went by quickly, and before she knew it, she was outside for the last break of the day. What a perfect day, she thought to herself as she swung on the swings.
The school bell rang and the break was over. When the swing was close to stopping, Ella jumped off. When she landed, she heard a loud rip (撕裂). She moved her hand to the back of her dress. It was ripped all the way down the back! Her very first fashion creation fell apart! Ella was so embarrassed.
Ella spotted her teacher, Miss Miller, near the door. Ella took one hand from her dress and waved for Miss Miller to come to her. Miss Miller came up and looked at the back of Ella’s dress.“Oh no! And it is such a beautiful dress!” “I made it myself,” Ella said. “You must be very proud! You did a great job!” “Not really. Or it wouldn’t have ripped.” “Well, that happens sometimes. Even with clothes you buy in the store!”

【答案】 Miss Miller took off her sweater and helped Ella to pull it on. She helped Ella up and walked her back to the classroom. As soon as she sat down, she heard a girl laughing at her torn clothes. Ella was very sad and felt very defeated. Miss Miller came to Ella and said, "Your clothes are very beautiful. You shouldn't deny yourself because it is broken.". After hearing this, Ella called her mother and asked her mother to pick her up. Because her clothes were broken, she couldn't walk home by herself. When her mother came, she saw what had happened and was distressed.
“We can’t avoid problems,” said Mom. “When the problem arises, we should find a way to solve the problem instead of complaining about ourselves. Now your dress is broken and you just need to sew it”. After saying that, mother took out the sewing bag and handed it to Ella, who took over the sewing bag and nodded to her mother. Then she stitched up the broken part of the dress.

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands. I fumbled (抚弄) with the string and then, unable to contain my curiosity any longer, I opened it. It was a shiny, brand new laptop. I had scored straight As for my O level examination and this was my reward. I had always envied my friends who were exchanging news about “chat rooms”,“instant messaging” and “e-mailing”, all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I chanced upon a social networking site. Soon I became glued to my new-found electronic friend. I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became trapped by Facebook and Twitter. I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be addicted to the glowing screen before me. Whenever I was not glued to these social networking sites, I would be going through gossip or fashion websites.
As time passed, I realized that I was hooked on the Internet. During weekends, when I had more time on my hands, I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in my room, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the people I befriended in cyberspace although I had never met them. Soon I was spending the small hours of the morning glued to the Internet. Sleep was no longer complete and continuous but divided into small pieces. My grades at school also began worsening.

【答案】It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. It became obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the Internet. I was asked to tone down my usage of the Internet. Yet, however hard I tried. I was unable to pull myself away, unable to terminate my chat sessions and unable to concentrate on my lessons. I was desperate for just another click, just another look at my e-mail or message board.
Then one day, my father took away my laptop. I sputtered and fumed but to no avail. Dad had made up his mind. Over time I realized that Dad and Mum had always wanted the best for me. That was when I decided to take the big step --to conquer my internet addiction. Quitting was harder than I expected. But with dogged determination I knew that I would be able to do it promised my parents that I would turn over a new leaf.

TALK TO ME
Mom was having a surgery on her throat. She had lost her voice four years before. Mom loved writing and was a popular newspaper columnist among the online circles.
“We really believe you’ll get your voice back. The surgery will work. Right, Mom?” I stared into Mom’s eyes, eager for a positive answer. Expressionless, Mom lifted her eyes from her laptop and pulled out one of the post—its that were stuck to the plastic case of the LCD display. It said “Yes”. I pursed my lips.
Her eyes fell back to her laptop. She didn’t smile, and she didn’t even look at me while raising the post—it in front of me as if she didn’t care at all. But I did. I was desperate to hear her speak again. She meant the world to me.
But Mom was not in the least excited about getting her voice back, because it was her third surgery and the last two didn’t work out. She was hopeless.
“Dad will be here soon,” I told Mom. She shrugged.
Just then Dr Smith entered the ward. “Relax, Lisa. There’s a good chance that your mom can speak after the surgery,” he comforted me. And I nodded with a forced smile. After two nurses wheeled Mom away to the operating room, I sat outside as the surgery went on. Resting my elbows on my knees, I buried my head in my hands, praying for the surgery to go well.
Mom had developed throat cancer. When she woke up one morning as a mute, I cried my eyes out though I was tired of her continually lecturing me about my improper behavior. Being unable to hear her voice was heart—breaking. Worse still, she no longer smiled at Dad and me and stopped giving us those morning hugs I always looked forward to. I couldn’t bear seeing her like this, so helpless, so quiet. All those post—its saying “I love you”, “I miss you”… had lost their meanings. Recalling all this, I couldn’t help weeping.

Then I felt a hand on my shoulder.

Dad and I held Mom’s hands until she woke up.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Para 1:
Then I felt a hand on my shoulder. Looking up tearfully, I found it was Dad. “Dad!” I got up and threw myself into his arms. “Mom will be fine,” Dad comforted me, patting my back gently. “I hope so too,” I whispered. Three hours had passed before Dr Smith came out. Dad and I sprung up and rushed forward. Dr Smith told us the surgery was a success and that Mom would be able to speak when she woke up. We were overwhelmed by joy. Before long, Mom was wheeled back to the ward.
Para 2:
Dad and I held Mom’s hands until she woke up. “Honey, you can speak now,” Dad said fondly. But we found no sign of pleasure in Mom’s eyes. “Mom, say something,” I encouraged her. Ignoring me, Mom attempted to pull out a post—it saying “Hi”. “No more post—its! Talk to me! You can, Mom!” I seized her hand tightly and gazed deep into her eyes, trying to give her courage. Hesitant, Mom opened her mouth, forcing out a weak “Hi”. Strange as it sounded, it was the loveliest voice I’d ever heard. We three embraced, tears of happiness streaming down our cheeks.

【广东惠州市2022届高三第三次调研】阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was early spring and Nana was in the backyard with her grandchildren. Amy, Michael, and Justin were playing when Nana said, “I’m going to start planting my garden. Who wants to help me?”
“What are going to plant, Nana?” asked Amy. “I like big, yellow sunflowers.”
“I’m going to plant vegetables. That way we can have them to eat when they are ready,” said Nana.
“How long does that take?” asked Michael. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially carrots.
“It will take a few months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Nana. The children were surprised.
“Months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” asked Amy. “You should just go to the store and buy them.”
“Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?” replied Nana. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.”
“I’ll help you, Nana,” offered Justin. He put down the soccer ball and went to look at the gardening tools Nana had laid out. “What do we do first?” Michael and Amy came over to look, too.
Nana taught Justin how to use a trowel (小铲子) to dig small rows of holes for the seeds. Next, Nana showed Amy how to pour the seeds into each hole. And it was Michael’s job to cover up the holes with soil. Finally, Amy wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Justin pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted,” said Nana.
When they had planted everything, the children took turns filling up the watering can so that Nana could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.
“Now we just water them a little every day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Nana.

Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version1 :
Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Not surprisingly, they were going to see how the garden was growing. After watering the vegetables, they would remove the weeds that popped up around the plants and apply organic fertilizer under Nana's instruction if necessary. As time went by, the plants were growing taller and stronger. When they noticed the vegetables flowering and producing fruits, their eyes were sparkling like diamonds. Never had they looked forward to summer like this before. But they clearly knew that it's worthwhile to wait for the inviting results.
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. Hearing that, the children all jumped into the air and cheers filled the whole garden. Nana gave them each baskets and, together they gathered some of the cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, which were turned into delicacies. “Who wants to help eat this fresh salad?” Nana asked. “Me!” everyone responded loudly. Tasting the salad, they thought nothing could be more delicious, because it was they who grew these vegetables. They all learned that many hands make light work and patience really pays off.
Possible version 2 :
Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Eager to help grow the vegetables well, they first took turns to water the plants. Then Nana showed them which plants needed trimming or which needed tying up to grow tall and straight. Day after day, spring turned into summer and finally, the plants started revealing their colorful secrets. The children were thrilled to see the tomatoes turning red, the cucumbers hiding under the green leaves and the peppers growing bigger. Not until then did they realize that Nana was right-- all they needed was patience.
Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. With baskets ready, Nana and the children started out on their business. Nana took them around the garden and picked some tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cabbages. Then for the following hour, they were busying making vegetable salad. The children helped wash the dirt off the food while Nana chopped up the vegetables. When Nana asked who wanted to try the fresh salad, everyone expressed their willingness excitedly. “OK. Amy, get the plates. Justin, get the water and cups, and Michael, get the forks. Let's celebrate the harvest!”
