Text 1
M: Have you seen my ping-pong bat? I’m supposed to meet Jay at the table tennis hall in fifteen minutes.
W: Have you checked your bedroom? I think you put it on the desk the day before yesterday.
Text 2
M: My phone is so disappointing. I just charged it a couple of hours ago, and it’s already dead.
W: I know what you mean. Mine was at 100% this morning, and it’s already down to less than 10%. I guess we have the same problem.
Text 3
M: Why the big smile? Yesterday you weren’t speaking to anyone and looked very worried.
W: It was my driving test this morning and I passed. My boyfriend bought me some flowers afterwards. Wasn’t that sweet?
Text 4
M: I’ve been waiting for a month for someone to return War and Peace to the library. I’m getting so impatient!
W: Why don’t you just buy a new book online?
Text 5
W: Are you going to the lake with us this weekend?
M: I wish I could go with you, but I promised to go to the hospital with Daniel. We will help the patients do some exercise so that they recover more quickly.
Text 6
W: Hi, welcome to Burger Palace. Can I take your order, please?
M: Yeah. One bacon cheeseburger and an order of fries for my wife, and a chicken sandwich and a hot dog for myself, please.
W: All right. Would you like anything to drink with that?
M: No, thanks. We’ve got sodas at home.
W: So, that’s going to be to go, right?
M: That’s right.
W: OK. Your total is $17.5.
M: Here’s a twenty. Keep the change.
W: Oh, thank you so much! You are Number 255. Your order should be ready in about five minutes.
M: Cool.
Text 7
W: Excuse me. Could you tell me how to get to the Nature Museum?
M: It’s rather far. You can catch a taxi in front of the hotel.
W: The weather is so nice. Is it possible to walk there?
M: It’s probably a 50-minute walk.
W: That sounds perfect. How do I get there?
M: When you leave the hotel, turn left and go straight. Cross that big street and you’ll see a park. At the park, turn right, just past a bus stop.
W: OK. I saw that yesterday.
M: Then you go straight along that big street for about…oh, half an hour. That street ends where it meets a larger street.
W: Let’s see. I’d be going…north?
M: Yes, ma’am. Go past the U.S. Embassy. That’s on your right. You’ll come to a post office. The museum is right behind it.
W: OK. Thank you very much.
Text 8
M: Madam, are you aware that there is a speed limit of 30 miles per hour on this road?
W: Yes, officer. I saw the signs.
M: Then could you tell me why I recorded the speed of your vehicle at 35 miles per hour?
W: You know, I asked a repairman to look at that. I think my car is showing the wrong speed.
M: Do you know that it is illegal to drive with equipment that has something wrong?
W: I understand you have to be strict sometimes, officer, but I really didn’t know.
M: Are you aware that ignorance of the law is no excuse?
W: Look at my passenger. It’s my little boy. He’s tired and I want to get him home.
M: I understand, madam — I’ll let you get him to bed. But watch your speed and make sure you get that problem fixed soon.
W: Thank you, officer. I’ll do that.
M: Take care, madam, and have a pleasant evening.
Text 9
W: Thank you for coming in today, Mr. Benedict. So, I can see from your résumé that you’ve had a lot of different jobs, but you changed your jobs too often. You haven’t had a fixed job over the past five years. And you don’t have any experience doing research.
M: I know I could do a good job here.
W: Why is that?
M: I’m very organized…I’m a good team player…and, um…I like working outside.
W: What does working outside have to do with this position? You’d be in a lab. You wouldn’t see any sunlight some days.
M: Sorry. I must have…
W: Written it down wrong on your hand?
M: Uh…yeah.
W: I thought I saw something on there. Is that how you prepare for an interview, Mr. Benedict?
M: Look, I’ll be honest with you. I was up until four in the morning working on my résumé. I have three more interviews this afternoon. I really need a job so I can pay for my little sister’s education. She’s disabled, and my dad lost his job yesterday.
W: I’m sorry to hear that.
M: I don’t think I’m making a very good impression here, and I don’t want to waste your time, so…
W: Wait a minute, Mr. Benedict. You might not be a good fit for this position, but I have a colleague who is doing a different research project that does involve working outside. Here is his number. I’ll put in a good word for you.
Text 10
W: Good evening, Los Angeles! I’m Jane Snyder on Channel 5, here to bring you the latest update on the weather. It’s been a big fire season this year, and southern California is still getting punished by the Cave Fire in the mountains to the north of Santa Barbara. Thousands of people are still unable to return to their homes because of this fire that started yesterday morning. Many people who had to abandon their homes should be able to go back, as the heavy rains will hopefully put out the fire. Now, let’s take a look at this approaching storm. The powerful storm is set to hit northern California tomorrow afternoon, just before the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. It is expected to reach our area in two days. This is great news for skiers, but it’ll create a travel headache for the holiday. This isn’t going to be any ordinary winter storm! Forecasters are saying that the West hasn’t seen a huge storm like this in decades! So, make your travel plans carefully. The worst time for Los Angeles traffic this week is predicted to be Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 8:00.
