In Spain, children and their families are riding bikes to school together in large groups. The program is called “bicibús” or bike bus. In Barcelona, the program started recently with only five children and grew quickly to hundreds of riders.

This fall, children in the Eixample area of Barcelona have a new way to get to school on Fridays—they ride their bikes. In September, a group of five children began biking to school with their parents on Fridays. Soon the group grew to 150 or more. The bike bus begins around 8:25 every Friday morning. The path it will follow is always posted ahead of time, so everyone knows where to join.

Instead of riding in bike lanes () or on sidewalks, the bicibús takes over the entire street. The commute (通勤) of these bikers takes about 25 minutes. And with the ever-growing cycling and skating kids taking part in this bike bus culture, the local police are helping stop traffic by riding in front of the bicibús and behind it. This further makes the parents happy that the additional security means their children will travel safely to school.

With music playing and bike bells ringing, the bicibús feels like a party. “The best part of the bicibús is that we ride along and pick up my friends and we ride together,” nine-year-old Maria Pitarch says.

Some parents have made the bicibús the way they get to work on Friday. Parents are hoping that the bicibús will help change ideas about how people can get around in the city. They want the city to create wider, kid-friendly bike lanes that are separate from car traffic. They point out that the bicibús also helps cut down on pollution.

Recently, pictures and videos of the Eixample bicibús got a lot of attention on the social media site. Many people pointed out what a simple idea it is, and how easy it is to get started. Already some other areas in Barcelona are also organizing bike buses.

    24. What can we learn about the bicibús?

    A. It has a flexible schedule. B. Its route is made known in advance.

    C. It takes over the whole sidewalks. D. Its safety is a concern for parents.

    25. Why does the author mention Maria Pitarch in the fourth paragraph?

    A. To introduce more about the bike bus.

    B. To encourage readers to join the bike bus.

    C. To acknowledge the performance of the kids.

    D. To show the enjoyment kids get from the program.

    26. What do the parents expect the local government to do?

    A. Cut down on pollution. B. Focus on traffic problems.

    C. Build safer bike lanes for kids. D. Promote the bicibús program.

    27. What is the public’s attitude toward the bus bike?

    A. Skeptical. B. Tolerant. C. Cautious. D. Favorable.

    C

Guy Bryant never intended to be a father figure. But over the past 12 years, he’s housed more than 50 foster kids in his Brooklyn apartment.

For decades, Bryant, 61, worked with teens aging out of New York’s child welfare system. His job was to find services that would make the transition (过渡) to living on their own easier. But he felt that what he could accomplish at the New York City Administration for Children’s Services office wasn’t enough. So in 2007, he decided to become a foster parent.

In an interview last month, Bryant told Romario Vassell, 21, one of his foster children, that agreeing to care for him was definitely one of the best decisions he made in foster care. Bryant told Vassell that he was nervous when he took in his first foster child. He said, “I lived alone at that point, and he was a kid that nobody wanted to take because of his behaviors. He got in a fight and he appeared at my house.” Bryant said his family thought he was out of his mind for making such a big lifestyle change and wondered how Bryant would adjust.

Bryant had been Vassell’s assigned case worker when they met. Bryart suggested that Vassell, then an untidy 18-year-old, consider foster care as an option to get out of the home lead shelter where he was staying.

At first, Vassell was hesitant. “I didn’t know how foster care was.” he said.

Since living with Bryant, Vassell now feels like he has a support network. “If I feel down and like I’m cornered, I have someone I can reach out to and talk to.” he said. “And that’s what I really love.”

Bryant told Vassell, “Whatever you’ve learned from me, I want you to teach it to someone else. Because that’s what’s important to me.”

    28. What is the second paragraph mainly about ?

    A. The shift of teens’ life.

    B. An introduction of Bryant’s task.

    C. Bryant’s challenge as a foster parent.

    D. The reason for Bryant’s being a foster parent.

    29. How did Bryant’s family feel about his decision?

    A. Disappointed. B. Ashamed. C. Puzzled. D. Embarrassed.

    30. What can we know about Vassell from the text?

    A. He is now living alone.

    B. He was Bryant’s first foster kid.

    C. He refused Bryant’s offer at first.

    D. He was instructed to pay kindness forward.

    31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text ?

    A. To call for social care. B. To praise Bryant’s deeds.

    C. To tell the story of Vassell. D. To comment on Bryant’s life.

    D

4 Footprints left behind by prehistoric people may be some of the strongest evidence yet that humans arrived in the Americas earlier than previously thought.

Over 60 tracks pop up and disappear across the landscape-show that people hung around what’s now New Mexico 23, 000 to 21, 000 years ago, geoscientist Matthew Bennett and colleagues reported in the Sept. 24 Science. If true, the fossil (化石) findings would be definitive proof that humans were in North America during the height of the last ice age, around 21,500 years ago.

When people first arrived in the Americas is highly contested. Scientists have historically thought that humans traveled across the Bering land bridge that connected Asia to North America around 13,000 years ago after the massive Laurentide Ice Sheet that once blanketed much of North America had started retreating into the Arctic. But a number of more recent discoveries from across North and South America—including roughly 30,000-year-old animal bones from a Mexican cave and stone tools from Texas-suggest that humans may have arrived far earlier.

At White Sands National Park in New Mexico, Bennett, of Bournemouth University in Pooler England, and colleagues used several methods to calculate the ages of the newly described tracks, including radiocarbon dating of plants grown in and between the footprints.

“One of the beautiful things about footprints is that, unlike stone tools or bones, they can’t be moved up or down the stratigraphy (地层).” he says. “They’re fixed, and they’re very precise.”

The tracks were created over two thousand years mostly by children and teenagers wandering through the patchwork of waterways that defined the White Sands area during the Ice Age, the researchers say.

Bennett is planning on returning to White Sands after the pandemic (疫情) to continue studying human footprints, hoping to learn more about the people who made them. “Footprints have a way of connecting you to the past that’s like nothing else,” he says. “It’s very powerful to put your finger in the base of a track and know that someone walked that way 23,000 years ago.”

    32. What’s the significance of the fossil findings in the Americas?

    A. Exact time of the last ice age will be defined.

    B. Reasons why over 60 tracks disappear will turn out.

    C. History of the first residents there will be rewritten.

    D. Ways of people’s moving to North America will be known.

    33. What can newly prove humans’ existence in North America?

    A. Bones and stone tools. B. The Bering land bridge.

    C. Fossil foorprints in sand. D. Records from ancient times.

    34. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 5 refer to?

    A. Footprints.

    B. The beautiful things.

    C. Stone tools or bones.

    D. Plants grown in and between the footprints.

    35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. More footprints need to be searched. B. The age of the footprints isn’t certain.

    C. What left the footprints isn’t known. D. More evidences still need to be found.

    第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)

    阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Adele’s new album, “30”, is finally available. Last month, hundreds of millions of us streamed its first single, “Easy On Me.” This song arouses feelings not easily put into words, but we can probably agree it is a sad song. ___36___ Yet sad music does pull us in and lift us up.

Let’s start with a biological theory. When we experience real-life loss, or empathize (体会) with another’s pain, certain hormones are released within us. ___37___ They do so by making us feel calmed and supported. Feeling Adele’s pain, or recalling our own, may cause such chemical changes within us.

Psychologically, a key reason we enjoy sad songs is that they profoundly move us. Feeling moved can come from us suddenly feeling closer to other people. Indeed, when we have listened to “30”, we may turn to reaction videos to see how others feel. ___38___And it boosts our feeling of being moved and triggers feelings of comfort and belonging.

___39___ Adele’s songs allow us to view the pleasure in terms of the meaning she helps us make. Adele takes hard life experiences and makes sense of them. This is what much sad art does. It takes the pain and suffering of the world and gives it meaning. As philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once put it, someone who has a why to live can bear almost any how.

Ultimately, we listen to Adele’s songs when we want to recall, reflect, or belong. They let us feel her sadness, share our suffering, and connect with others. To all of us, Adele’s songs say: ___40___

    A. You are not alone in your pain.

    B. Music speaks louder than words.

    C. These help us to tackle loss and pain.

    D. We can also think at the spiritual level.

    E. Few people are aware sad music makes us feel good.

    F. This lets us share an emotional experience with others.

    G. This may make us better prepared for when real loss strikes.

    Teen Becomes A Local Hero

When Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.

In fact. that’s exactly how it started. Sydney Raley has been working at MC Donald’s for about seven months and so far, it’s been her typical after-school job. The day had been mostly normal -making coffee, making drinks, and going into the lunch rush.

But a few hours into her shift. things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food, Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy and was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened.

Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this. But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to dial 911. Then, she dove through the drive-through window and came to the rescue.

The teen pushed the driver’s side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned from her Red Cross babysitter class-which she’d taken four years earlier. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver(哈姆立克急教法)immediately kicked in. Still, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite working. Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

She shouted to that man for assistance.
