Mr. Rock is an unhappy man. All he wants every day is to become rich. He is an engineer, which gives him enough money for a house and a car. However, he still isn’t happy. He admires the rich people and the way they live.
One day, he received a call saying he won a big prize. The caller said that his name and phone number had been chosen. “You are our lucky winner,” said the voice on the phone. “You have won a prize valued at a total of $110,000.”
Excited, but with some doubt about the news, Mr. Rock had a careful conversation with the person. Finally, he believed that the prize was real. His luck arrived!
As instructed, he went to the bank to open an account(账户). He was ready to get the prize money. A few days later, another call came and he was told to send some money to pay the tax(税) before his prize money could be sent to his account. He needed to pay only $3,000 to get his $110,000 prize. The next day, when he called to ask about the money, all he got was a message saying that the phone number he had called didn’t exist(存在). He called many times, but it was the same message. He was sad and mad. In the end, he went to the police station to report the incident.

Dear Julia,
First, you should keep in mind that not everyone is going to like you all the time. Some people might even hate you for no reason at all. I know that sounds unfair, but that’s just how some people are.
I will say this for you. It’s not good to hear that your classmates supposedly(据说) dislike you. Why did I say “supposedly”? It’s possible that your deskmate is lying to you. Your deskmate might be the one who hates you. Your deskmate might be trying to trick you and make you feel bad.
On the other hand, it’s also possible that you did something in the past that you don’t quite remember—something that made your classmates dislike you. Maybe you can talk with your teacher and ask him or her if you hurt someone in the past. However, I think it’s more likely that your deskmate isn’t being honest with you.

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said to me, “Mum, I have saved twenty dollars, and I have made the list.”
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (交款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears(眼泪) falling down his face.
Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”
Mark took the money, dried his tears and paid for all his presents.
That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.

Nowadays, mobile phones play an important role in our life. Many people even feel that they can’t live without their mobile phones. But what will our life be like if we give up using our mobile phones? Will it become boring? Twenty-eight eighth graders at St. Matthew School in San Francisco will tell you that it can still be rich and colorful. These students took part in their school’s “tech-free” challenge. They could not use their mobile phones during two weeks, from November 11 to November 25. “The idea was to help students understand how technology has affected their lives,” said Denise Uhl, the principal(校长) of the school.
Uhl did a survey on technology usage among the eighth graders before thinking of the challenge. She found that eighty-four percent of the students said that they didn’t like it “when everyone was on their mobile phones”, but they didn’t know what to do about it. The answer was actually easy—to stop constantly(频繁地) using mobile phones. To help students understand the point, Uhl created the activity. And it was warmly welcomed among students.
“I wanted to sign up for the tech-free challenge because it was just really a good idea to do it,” an eighth grader named Joe Bevilacqua told the local newspaper Catholic San Francisco. “I wanted to get closer to my family. And it really worked. I started to hang out with my family more. We watched more family movies and we played a lot of board games.”
The activity also helped students develop their interests. During the two weeks, Lucas Fayet-Faber said he spent much more time outside, picking lemons in his garden. Maddie Hughes finished a painting and Cassie Fell created a scarf on a loom(织布机).
71. What was the “tech-free” challenge about?
