But whether these games deliver n thse prmises is up fr debate. “Fr every study that finds sme evidence, there’s an equal number f papers that find n evidence,” says Bbby Stjanski, a cgnitive (认知的) psychlgist at Western University in Ontari.
Recently, in perhaps the biggest real-wrld study f these prgrams, Stjanski and his team fund 8,563 vlunteers. First, participants filled ut an nline questinnaire abut their training habits and which, if any, prgram they used. Sme 1,009 participants reprted using brain training prgrams fr abut eight mnths n average, thugh duratins ranged frm tw weeks t mre than five years. Next, the vlunteers cmpleted 12 cgnitive tests assessing memry, reasning and verbal skills. They faced memry exercises, spatial reasning tasks, pattern-finding puzzles and strategy challenges.
When researchers lked at the results, they saw that brain trainers n average had n mental edge ver the ther grup in memry, verbal skills and reasning. Even amng thse wh had used training prgrams fr at least 18 mnths, brain training didn’t bst thinking abilities abve the level f peple wh didn’t use the prgrams.
“N matter hw we sliced the data, we were unable t find any testimny that brain training was assciated with cgnitive abilities,” says Stjanski. That held true whether the team analyzed participants by age, prgram used, educatin r sciecnmic status (地位)—all were cgnitively similar t the grup wh didn’t use the prgrams.
“Brain training may be beneficial in specific situatins, but real wrld may be the best brain trainer,” says Elizabeth Stine-Mrrw, a cgnitive aging scientist at the University f Illinis. While it’s pssible t imprve mental abilities, Stine-Mrrw advcates practicing thse skills in different real-life situatins, “That’s a much better use f ne’s time than sitting at a cmputer and ding little tasks.”
