例1:
Moving into a new home in a new neighborhood is an exciting experience. Of course, you want to make sure that you become an accepted and valuable part of your new neighborhood. The easiest way to accomplish this is to make sure you conduct yourself as a good neighbor should.
A. In general, keep an eye on their property while they are gone.
B. A good neighbor is also one who likes to help out in small ways.
C. Being a good neighbor is more or less about considerate behavior.

F. People tend to take pride in keeping everything in their street fresh and inviting.
G. Here are a few tips to help you win over everyone in the neighborhood quickly.
The easiest way to...a good neighbor should", 同时结合下文几段的具体做法可知,G项"这里是几个能帮你快速在社区中获得大家的友谊的窍门"能很好地起到过渡作用,所以选G项。
例2:
Why Do We Get Angry?
Anger seems simple when we are feeling it, but the causes of anger are various. Knowing these causes can make us examine our behavior, and correct bad habits. The main reasons we get angry are triggering(触发)events, personality traits(特征), and our assessment of situations. 1
Triggering events for anger are so many that to describe them all would take hundreds of pages. However, here are some examples: being cut off in traffic, a deadline approaching, experiencing physical pain, and much more. 2 G The reason why someone is triggered by something and others are not is often due to one’s personal history and psychological traits.
A. Our attitude and viewpoint on situations can create anger within us as well.
B. But some types of situations can help us to get rid of the occurrence of anger.
C. Anger is rarely looked upon as a beneficial character trait, and is usually advised to reduce it.
D. Anger is a particularly strong feeling and maybe people think that they have reasons to feel angry.
E. Having these personality traits implies the pre-anger state, where anger is in the background of your mind.
F. Understanding these reasons will control our own anger if we are willing to evaluate ourselves with a critical eye.
G. Not everyone acts the same in response to events, and that is why what triggers one person may or may not trigger another.
The main reasons we get angry are triggering (触发) events, personality traits (特征), and our assessment of situations"以及下文可知,空格处的内容与生气的主要原因有关。
The large color decisions in your rooms concern the walls, ceilings, and floors. Whether you're looking at wallpaper or paint, the time, effort and relative expense put into it are significant.
A.While all of them are useful
B.Whatever you're looking for
C.If you're experimenting with a color
D.Small color choices are the ones we're most familiar with
E.It's not really a good idea to use too many small color pieces
F.So it pays to be sure, because you want to get it right the first time
G.Color choices in this range are a step up from the small ones in two major ways
根据空前的“the time, effort and relative expense put into it are significant”可知,大型物品的颜色选择所需要的时间、精力、费用很大,这恰与F项构成因果关系。
例4:
In China, elders are traditionally treated with enormous respect and dignity while the young are cherished and nurtured. In America, the goal of the family is to encourage independence, particularly that of the children. 37 . (2019全国I卷)
E. Basically China values the community and the US values the individual.
F. Chinese people do not have the same concept of privacy as Americans do
G. Unlike the Chinese, older Americans seldom live with their children.

E. They can change according to circumstances.
F. Motivation is what you need most to do a good job.

例6:
●Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. 39

List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today.(列出你所有的成就。
This is often appreciated since at a housewarming there isn’t a lot of food served. There are usually no planned activities like games at a housewarming party. The host or hostess of the party will, however, probably give all the guests a tour of their new home. Sometimes, because a housewarming party happens shortly after a person moves into their new home, people may be asked to help unpack boxes. ___39___(2020年全国卷III)
A. This isn’t usual though.
B. It is traditional to bring a gift to a housewarming party.
C. You can also bring food or drinks to share with the other guests.
【答案】A
If you’re the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation.___39___.(2021新课标卷II)
C. If you ask the question “How did you get here?”
D. Be prepared to have awkward conversations with strangers
E. Or turn the conversation into a topic where they have little to say

【解析】根据上文“If you can’t take their wine away, you should certainly try to take away their soapbox (讲台). If you’re the host, you can ask them to help you in the kitchen with something and just remove them from the situation. (如果你不能拿走他们的酒,你当然应该让他们离开讲话的地方。如果你是主人,你可以让他们到厨房帮你做点什么,只是为了让他们摆脱那种情景)”可知,本段主要是为解决“喝太多酒或一直说个不停”这个问题提供方法。由此可知,E项“Or turn the conversation into a topic where they have little to say(或者把谈话变成他们没什么可说的话题)”是提出的另一个解决办法,承接上文,符合题意。故选E项。
例9:
Paulo Magalhaes, a 34-year-old Portuguese computer engineer, loves to open his mailbox and find a brightlycolored picture of Rome's Colosseum. Or Africa's Victoria Falls. Or China's Great Wall. ___11__
E. On August 5, the number of postcards exchanged by members topped 31 million.
F. Similarly, if you speak only Chinese, receiving a card in Swedish takes part of the fun away.
G. In short, he loves postcards, and the excitement of getting a hand-written note from someone far away.
【答案】G
【解析】上文“Paulo Magalhaes, a 34-year-old Portuguese computer engineer, loves to open his mailbox and find a brightly colored image of Rome's Colosseum. Or Africa's Victoria Falls. Or China’s Great Wall.和下文“... and you realize that not everyone is into it.”说明他身边缺少与他志趣相投的人。选项G“In short, he loves postcards, and the excitement of getting a scribbled note from someone far away.”起到承上启下的作用,总结了上文Paulo喜欢明信片,也引出下文关于他的喜好得不到回应的问题。故选G项。
【名师点津】
设空在段尾,这种选项通常起着总结上文,提示下文的功能。所以会有两种情况:一是只承接上文,二是承上启下。应先看设空前文,寻找选项与前文之间的关联,如果第一段的段尾设题,要认真阅读,看此处是细节还是主题。通常文章第一段要提出文章的主题,如果在段尾提出主题,会用一些信号词如转折词引出来,正确答案中应有这样的特征词,如:therefore,as a result,thus,hence,in short,to sum up,to conclude,in a word等词语,选项中也可发现前文的同义词句。

The Science of Risk-Seeking
Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. 1 Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.
The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 2 As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.
So why aren't we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. 3 段尾句
No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 4 To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.
5 For the risk-seekers, a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.
As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we'll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.
A. It all depends on your character.
B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.
C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.
D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.
E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.
F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.
G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.
1. F。选项F中的"weigh risks and rewards"与上文的"weigh the risk and the reward"相呼应,故F项符合语境。
2. C。 Being better at those things"与上文的"were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring"相呼应,因此选C。
4. E。根据上文的"your willingness...teenage years"及下文的"hunger for new experiences..."

Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. 1 In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.
One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. 2 Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and the blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.
3 They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally get sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men.
4 Scientists are still not exactly sure how genes influence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman's body cells have a tendency (倾向) to age more slowly than a man's. Others think that a man's body cells have a tendency to age more quickly.
A. However, women, on average, live longer.
B. The biological factor plays an important part.
C. Women are also helped by their female genes.
D. The female hormones also protect the body in another way.
E. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities.
F. Therefore, women are more healthy than men and can live a better life.
G. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control various body functions.
1. A。 In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men"可知,空格处讲的是平均来看,女人的寿命更长。
They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections"可知,该段讲的是荷尔蒙的其他功能。
Scientists are still not exactly sure how genes influence aging...Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency (倾向) to age more slowly than a man’s"可知,本段主要讲了基因与衰老的关系。

【16题详解】根据上文“Magnet schools are public schools that have specialized curricula in areas such as the sciences, arts, leadership, or languages. Students often choose magnet schools to challenge themselves in fields that appeal to their interests.(“磁石学校”指的是在科学、艺术、领导力或语言等领域开设专门课程的公立学校。学生们通常选择名牌学校,在自己感兴趣的领域挑战自己。)”可知,首段全段都在定义和介绍magnet school,而D选项中的“this attraction”即对应前文中的“appeal to their interests”。D项:The term “magnet”,in fact, refers to this idea of attraction.(事实上,“磁铁”一词指的是吸引力这个概念。)
【17题详解】根据上文“Magnet schools were born in the late 1960s, when students attended schools closest to their homes.(磁石学校诞生于20世纪60年代末,当时学生上的是离家最近的学校。)” 当时人们都是就近入学,结合下文“Students from diverse neighborhoods would choose to attend a school that might be further from home because the school catered to their particular strengths and interests.(来自不同社区的学生可能会选择离家较远的学校,因为学校会满足他们的特殊优势和兴趣。)” Magnet schools were designed to draw students from different zones.(磁铁学校旨在吸引来自不同地区的学生。)
【18题详解】根据上文“Many magnet schools have remained true to their original goals of promoting diversity through educational choice.(许多“磁石学校”坚持其通过教育选择促进多元化的最初目标。)” These schools consistently rank among the top in the state.(这些学校在州内一直名列前茅。)

Magnet schools typically have very high graduation and college placement rates. Yet students may live far away and transportation may not be provided by schools.(由纳税人出资,他们没有其他费用。 Magnet schools come with a mix of advantages and disadvantages.(磁石学校既有优点也有缺点。)

【18题详解】根据下文“When you are apologizing, it is easier to blame the situation. Don't try to do that. It will only worsen the situation. Don't explain yourself either, because this shows you don't treat the mistake seriously.(当你在道歉的时候,更容易责怪情况。不要这样做。这只会使局势恶化。也不要为自己辩解,因为这表明你没有认真对待错误。)”可知,本段建议不要去责怪情况,不要为自己辩解,所以B项“不要责怪情况。”符合本段主旨,故选B。
【19题详解】根据前文“Make an apology sincerely. Even though there was a reason why you acted in a certain way, don't put it in the letter.(真诚地道歉。即使你这样做是有原因的,也不要写在信里。)”可知,本段建议在信中真诚地道歉,不要解释犯错的原因,这可能会让对方觉得在找借口,F项“这可以被认为是你在找的一个借口。”符合文意,故选F。

Companies that are good for working moms are also good for humans. ____13____ They want to be part of companies that readily acknowledge people have priorities outside of work and recognize this does not mean they're any less productive or less committed.
Although companies have talked for decades about trying to develop a sense of inclusion for working moms, very little has changed. ____14____ They have to handle questions about limitations such as a lack of time, commitment, and focus.
Working moms are valuable employees who we should actively guide and promote. They bring a lot to the table. In fact, a productivity study of highly skilled workers in 2014 found that parents were more productive than those who were not parents.

When employees don't feel included, they're less engaged and productive.(在你的组织中引入和吸引不同的人需要意识和准备。
【12题详解】根据后文“When a workplace is truly inclusive, everyone feels like they are valued and their needs are being considered. There's a place, for example, to be a working mother without feeling like you have to apologize or explain that you need to balance work and parenting.(当一个工作场所真正具有包容性时,每个人都会觉得自己受到了重视,他们的需求也得到了考虑。例如,有一个地方,作为一个职场母亲,你不必感到你需要为平衡工作和育儿而道歉或解释)”可知,本段主要强调的是工作场所的包容性,A选项中Inclusion对应后文中inclusive。故A选项“包容意味着意识到每个人都是独一无二的”符合语境,故选A。
【13题详解】根据上文“Companies that are good for working moms are also good for humans.(对职场妈妈好的公司对其他人也好)”以及后文“They want to be part of companies that readily acknowledge people have priorities outside of work and recognize this does not mean they're any less productive or less committed.(他们希望自己的公司能够承认员工在工作之外也有优先考虑的事情,并意识到这并不意味着他们的工作效率低下或工作投入少)”可知,上文提到对职场妈妈好的公司对其他人也好,后文则提到某一种员工希望自己的公司能够承认员工在工作之外也有优先考虑的事情,可推测本句是在说明职场妈妈希望公司给予自己的理解和支持,F选项中Working moms对应上文中working moms,同时下文中的They 指代的是Working moms。
【14题详解】根据上文“Although companies have talked for decades about trying to develop a sense of inclusion for working moms, very little has changed.(尽管几十年来,各大公司一直在谈论如何为职场妈妈培养一种包容感,但几乎没有什么变化)”以及后文“They have to handle questions about limitations such as a lack of time, commitment, and focus.(他们必须处理有关限制的问题,如缺乏时间、承诺和注意力)”可知,上文提到如何为职场妈妈培养一种包容感几十年来没有过变化,后文则提到了职场妈妈需要处理的一些问题,可推测母亲们在工作场所还是仍然需要保护自己,下文中的They 指代的就是选项中的CMothers ,故C选项“在工作场所,母亲们仍然常常要保护自己”符合语境,故选C。
【15题详解】根据上文“Working moms are valuable employees who we should actively guide and promote. They bring a lot to the table. In fact, a productivity study of highly skilled workers in 2014 found that parents were more productive than those who were not parents.(职场妈妈是我们应该积极引导和提拔的有价值的员工。她们带来了很多东西。事实上,2014年一项针对高技能工人的生产力研究发现,有孩子的人比没有孩子的人工作效率更高)”可知,上文提到一项研究发现有孩子的人比没有孩子的人工作效率更高,本句为本段最后一句,故应承接上文,继续说明研究结果,G选项中in the study对应上文中a productivity study。故G选项“在这项研究中,有两个或两个以上孩子的母亲被认为是最有生产力的”符合语境,故选G。

The popularity of Facebook has caused a shift in how people realize themselves; the "like" button has become nothing more than a self-esteem(自尊)booster. 36__________. It can take years and years, but there are shortcuts you can use to achieve it.
37__________________. You're not arrogant(自大的) if you love yourself. In fact, arrogance is often the foundation of low self-esteem and insecurity. Try this exercise: stand in front of the mirror and tell your reflection everything you love about yourself. Accept what you don't like about yourself. This may feel uncomfortable at first, but change often does.
Do you socialise with negative people? 38__________. This may seem unfair, but those negative people will simply strengthen what you don't like about yourself. People like to socialise with happy, positive people. The happiest people in life are the ones that look at what they have, not what they don't have.
There are a lot of people who aren't aware they have a negative voice in their head. 39
Whenever you hear a negative comment, immediately replace it with a positive one. Your brain is like a computer: whatever command you input, it responds, so if you ask it a question like "why do I always mess up?" your brain will find plenty of examples to support it.
Celebrating your successes is another good way. We're often so busy in life that we seldom take the time to stop and really reflect on what we've achieved. Take the time once a day to ask yourself what you're proud of having achieved that day.
40_________________. Remember that it's not the outcome that's always important, but the process.
A. Learn to love yourself.
B. Catch your negative self-talk.

Help Foreign Guests at Formal Dinner
The Spring Festival is coming. The traditional family banquet (宴会) is also coming. You probably have tried many different Chinese dishes. But do you really know how to behave properly at such an important meal? 36 Don’t worry if you are not sure, and here are some tips.
In the West, everyone has their own plate of food or elder people at the table taste every dish first. 37 It is always polite to let guests or elder people at the table taste every dish first.
Don’t put your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl. 38 The reason for this is that when people die, family members give them a bowl of rice with a pair of chopsticks sticking out. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like you want someone at the table to die.
Make sure the spout (壶嘴) of the teapot is not facing anyone as this is impolite. The spout should always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward from the table.
39 Beggars (乞丐) are usually seen tapping (轻敲) on their bowls with chopsticks in the street, so tapping on bowls is not polite, especially when you eat in a friend’s home.
Although, teenagers are not supposed to drink any wine, you can still say “Ganbei” and drink to the health of your grandparents and parents. 40
A.It is sure to please them.
B.Instead, lay them on your dish.
C.Don’t tap on your bowl with your chopsticks.
D.Helping foreign guests at formal dinner is of great importance.
E.Could you explain Chinese polite table behaviors to a foreign visitor?
F.Therefore, Chinese people use chopsticks rather than knives and forks.
G.However, in China, the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares.

Water jogging is a workout method where people get into the water and copy the movement of jogging. This workout routine relies on the resistance of moving inside water to build up muscles and increase endurance(耐力). 36 This is because it is considered very effective at burning food energy.
When people attempt this workout method, it is usually important to be floating in the water at a depth that doesn’t allow the feet to touch. The tenseness of the body while doing the exercise can make it difficult to remain floating, so most people use some tools. The main devices are belts that keep people floating at an exact depth so that they are submerged(淹没) shoulder level.
Water jogging can potentially be useful for almost anybody, but many of the people who try this exercise method are attempting to recover from injuries. It is considered particularly good in this situation for a lot of reasons. 38 Being removed from the effects of gravity can allow for movements that don’t put as much strain on the body, especially in the joints.
39 For example, some movements have increased resistance underwater, including any movements of the arms. When running on the ground, there is no significant resistance against the arms, but water jogging can potentially allow a person to build up muscles in that area.
Sometimes water jogging can be very difficult for people who are just starting out. 40 To deal with the issue of boredom, some people may find ways to change the workout by mixing in different levels of intensity(强度). This can potentially decrease the sense of boredom.
A. The water has other potential benefits as well.
B. We all hope to have the ability to float easily in the water.
C. Some find the exercise doesn’t hold their attention very well.
D. When people are floating in water, they are generally weightless.
E. Many people also believe that water jogging is a good way to lose weight.
F. It requires access to a pool deep enough to run without touching the bottom.
G. People also often wear special shoes that increase the resistance of the water.
