    Teaching Plan for

    Module 2 My home town and my country

    Unit 2 Cambridge is a beautiful city in the east of England.

    Analysis of the teaching material:

    Tony introduces his home town and his country in Unit 2. First, he introduces the location,the population of his home town----Cambridge and it’s famous for Cambridge University. Then he describes the capital of England----London and some places of interest there. Finally, he gives a brief introduction of England and say something when you travel to England.

    Analysis of students:

        Students are in Grade 8 in a good junior high school in a capital city. They can understand some simple and short passages and get some information from reading and pictures.

    Performance Definition:

    Students can find relevant information and understand the idea of the reading materials or pictures. (Band 4, reading). Students can express their opinion and describe places in simple language(Band 4, Overall Performance) (English Curriculum Standard of Compulsory Education , 2011)

    Teaching objectives:

        1. To describe the location of a place

        2. To get information about Cambridge, London and English

        3. To write about your home town

    Key vocabulary: north, south, west, home town, be famous for, island,     

                   area, low, mountain, countryside, umbrella

    Key structures:  It … has a population of about 120,000.

                   … so it is bigger and busier than Cambridge.

                   It is never very hot in summer or very cold in winter.

    Teaching types: Reading and writing

    Teaching Procedures:

    Step 1 Warming up and lead-in

    A guessing game.

    Ask students to guess what the four letters(N, S, E, W) stand for.

    Students give the answers.

    They refer to north, south, east and west.

    Step 2 Pre-reading

    l. Ask students to look at the map of England and try to say the location of the four cities using north, south, east and west.

    Read out the sentences while they follow.

    (1) Cambridge is in the east of England.

    (2) London is in the south of England.

    (3) Bristol is in the west of England.

    (4) Manchester is in the north of England.

        2. Prediction. Students try to guess what the passage will talk about. They can find some information from the title and the pictures.

    Step 3 While-Reading

    1. Fast reading

    Students read the passage quickly and then match the main idea with each paragraph. (Tips: read for key words.)

    1. Careful reading

    (1) Enjoy some pictures and famous places in Cambridge.

       Read para 1 and fill in the blanks.

    (2) Enjoy a video named tour of London and then complete the sentences.

    (3) Complete the table Cambridge VS London

    (4) Students read para 1 and para 2 together after the tape.

    (5)  Read para 3 and 4 carefully and answer questions.

        1. What’s on the coast?

        2. What’s in the north of England?

        3. What’s in the south of England?

        4. When may we visit England? Why?

    Step 4 Post-reading

    Task 1.

    Try to introduce Cambridge and London with the help of the key  

    words.

        Task 2. Writing

       1. Answer the questions and write notes about your home town

     (1) Where is it?

     (2) What’s its population?

     (3) Is it big or small?

     (4) What is it famous for?

     (5) How old is it?

     (6) What is the weather like?

        2. Give some sentence structures to help the students.

        3. Students write the answers and then ask them to read it out.

    4. Give a table of my home town----Hefei.

    Ask students to arrange the answers into a short passage.

    The teacher gives a sample:

        It’s in the east/ south / ... of China. It has a population of over / about ... It’s ... It’s famous for ... It is over … years old. …The weather is … in winter and … in summer. … I like my hometown very much. It’s very beautiful and people here  are very friendly. Welcome to my hometown!

    Step 5 Homework

        1. Find out the key phrases and sentences.

        2. Write a composition about your home town.
