And it brought people of different generations together. In small Appalachian towns in the past, there was always a musician in the neighborhood. Young people would study the art under him or her.
    Old-time music is learned by ear. It’s a much more arduous kind of music than other music. There’re no written notes, so people have to learn it all by ear and try to reproduce the sound. Therefore, it needs more time and effort to master it. Old-time musicians might not read music, but they can easily put a song together.
    Old-time songs mainly describe what happened in the past. Some called “spiritual” are based in the the Christain religion. Others are American civil war songs. And, many are about the life and land that surround the songwriter. But some of the earliest songs go back to the music’s European roots.
    These days, oid-time music is not often heard over the radio. But it still lives on strongly in the communities where it came from.

Maybe not every day, maybe not ski-jumping, definitely not extreme sports, but I deeply hope that they will push themselves to their limits, facing down fear with whatever tools they can use and enjoying the great rush that comes from attempting scary things and getting to the other side of them.
    So if I want that for my kids, I have to honestly look at my own relationship with risk and say that yes... I play it safe. And I have to ask myself another question: Am I doing enough? Or do I need to make some changes in my life so that my daughter and son can be inspired to make their own brave decisions?

    The Amazon rain forest stretches about 2.7 million square miles. It has been described as the “lungs of our planet”. More than 20% of the planet’s oxygen is produced there!     The Amazon River basin stretches into the countries of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, but the bulk of it is in Brazil. Loggers, miners, and farmers in Brazil have been rapidly cutting down the Amazon since the 1960s. South American farmers and settlers burn the rain forest to clear the land. The land is used to grow crops and raise livestock or for new towns. Satellite photos show how the forest continues to shrink.
    The government of Brazil has pledged time and again to slow down the clearing of land. However, they have not done enough to stop illegal burning and logging. But it's not just Brazil's problem. The Amazon is a treasure for all of humanity. Other countries, including the United States, must do more to help Brazil preserve the Amazon.
    In order to protect the area, the Central Amazon Conservation Complex in Brazil was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The heritage site makes up the largest protected area in the Amazon Basin (over 6 million hectares). The rain forest is over 55 million years old. There are still many parts of the Amazon that no one has ever been to, and many species that no one has ever seen.

And she agreed to write a letter of recommendation for me when I decided to apply for the Guardian Scholars Program, a program committed to helping ambitious, college-bound students exit the foster care system.
    I found new ambition through Mrs. Sase’s support and devotion to my academic and personal success. Gradually, not only did my grades improve, but my confidence also improved.
    The most amazing thing about Mrs. Sase was that I was just one of an army of students who would confess that Mrs. Sase had changed their lives. Her entire classroom was filled with letters of utmost appreciation for her and the life-changing impact she had on so many students.
