Fanning is a musician and hotel owner born in Ireland, and now he lives deep in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. “The Irish have a song and play music nearly every day.” Said Fanning. “Every weekend, my family will play music in the house.” Like Fanning, many people in the area continue the traditions from their family’s immigrant history, including a kind of music called old-time.
Old-time music comes from the Appalachian Mountains, a system of mountains along the eastern part of the United States. In the 18th century, many Europeans from Ireland, Scotland, and Germany arrived in the area to begin new lives. Reflecting the cultures that settled there, the roots of old-time music are in the traditional music of these European countries. Although the US became their home, these Appalachian communities continued the European music and dance traditions they loved. Over time, the music mixed with that of African slaves and became what is now called old-time music.
The earliest purpose of the music was for dancing. Life in the mountains was hard work. Music and dancing provided the Appalachians with a much needed break from the labor of the day. And it brought people of different generations together. In small Appalachian towns in the past, there was always a musician in the neighborhood. Young people would study the art under him or her.
Old-time music is learned by ear. It’s a much more arduous kind of music than other music. There’re no written notes, so people have to learn it all by ear and try to reproduce the sound. Therefore, it needs more time and effort to master it. Old-time musicians might not read music, but they can easily put a song together.
Old-time songs mainly describe what happened in the past. Some called “spiritual” are based in the the Christain religion. Others are American civil war songs. And, many are about the life and land that surround the songwriter. But some of the earliest songs go back to the music’s European roots.
These days, oid-time music is not often heard over the radio. But it still lives on strongly in the communities where it came from.

C
I cannot stop thinking about the video of a 10-year-old girl facing her fears at the top of a ski jump. Her fear, her courage, her joy, her pride — the whole thing has really touched me. Of course, the video makes me reflect on the times when I experienced the similar feeling. I remember how in those moments every cell in my body vibrated (颤动) with life. But it also reminded me of the times I didn’t choose the more risky options.
I’ve always been a little bit of a chicken when it comes to my physical safety but I definitely pushed myself more when I was younger. Now that I’m a mom, I feel like I have to stay safe. I worry about what my kids would do without me and that leads me to make safe choices.
But as I watch this fourth grade overcome her fears, I think about how much this experience will mean to her in the future; she’ll always have this as a reference point when she comes up against something scary or difficult. She’ll be able to look back on this and say, “Well, I did that and the worst part was the bad feeling at the beginning.”
I know I want that view for my 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. I know I want them to take risks. Maybe not every day, maybe not ski-jumping, definitely not extreme sports, but I deeply hope that they will push themselves to their limits, facing down fear with whatever tools they can use and enjoying the great rush that comes from attempting scary things and getting to the other side of them.
So if I want that for my kids, I have to honestly look at my own relationship with risk and say that yes... I play it safe. And I have to ask myself another question: Am I doing enough? Or do I need to make some changes in my life so that my daughter and son can be inspired to make their own brave decisions?
45.How did the author react when watching that video?
A.She felt ashamed of herself.
B.She realized that sport was dangerous.
C.She thought of her own past experiences.
D.She regretted taking part in some risky activities.
46.After becoming a mother, the author chooses to ______.
A.be careful of her safety
B.push herself to her limits
C.be overprotective of her kids
D.pick up the risky activities again
47.The fourth grader’s overcoming her fears makes the author realize ______.
A.having safe choices is important
B.taking a risk isn’t as scary as it seems
C.overcoming fears requires a long time
D.making preparations for future is necessary
48.The author most probably thinks that she should ______.
A.let her kids play with the girl in the video
B.certainly allow her kids to try ski-jumping
C.use some tools to practice her kids’ courage
D.participate in more risk activities to set an example
49.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Pushing Ourselves to Our Limits
B.Paying Attention to Kids’ Activities
C.Learning a Kind of Risky Activities
D.Encouraging Kids to Choose What They Like

Amazon Alert
The Amazon rain forest stretches about 2.7 million square miles. It has been described as the “lungs of our planet”. More than 20% of the planet’s oxygen is produced there! The Amazon holds one-fifth of the world’s freshwater supply. The tropical forests in the heart of the Amazon basin are full of many different kinds of life. They hold the world’s widest variety of life, and are also home to many species found nowhere else. This area is one of the world’s natural treasures. But unless nations around the world take action, it will disappear.
Every year, the rain forest in the Amazon is shrinking. Farmers and builders are clearing the land, usually by burning down the forest. This destruction reached record levels in the 1990s and has remained steady since then. In 2003, an estimated 9,170 square miles were burned or cleared.
The Amazon River basin stretches into the countries of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, but the bulk of it is in Brazil. Loggers, miners, and farmers in Brazil have been rapidly cutting down the Amazon since the 1960s. South American farmers and settlers burn the rain forest to clear the land. The land is used to grow crops and raise livestock or for new towns. Satellite photos show how the forest continues to shrink.
The government of Brazil has pledged time and again to slow down the clearing of land. However, they have not done enough to stop illegal burning and logging. But it's not just Brazil's problem. The Amazon is a treasure for all of humanity. Other countries, including the United States, must do more to help Brazil preserve the Amazon.
In order to protect the area, the Central Amazon Conservation Complex in Brazil was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The heritage site makes up the largest protected area in the Amazon Basin (over 6 million hectares). The rain forest is over 55 million years old. There are still many parts of the Amazon that no one has ever been to, and many species that no one has ever seen.
Fact File

第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I met Mrs. Sase in my senior year of high school. I was struggling greatly in her math class. On top of always struggling with math, I was dealing with the anxiety that came with being a foster youth and worrying deeply about the future that lay in store for me. I had been living with my foster parents (养父母), and our agreement was that after graduation I was to move out and begin my life as an adult to support myself, at seventeen.
What accompanied the burden of the anxiety was a lack of motivation in school. Most teachers didn’t notice me. Mrs. Sase, however, took a closer look. I will never forget the first time she walked over to my desk and handed me a little folded note. It read, “Are you okay?”
I was shocked by her genuine care and interest in my well-being. Not only was she sensitive enough to notice my reserve, but she also took the time to personally make a difference. She listened as I shared my most hidden fears about my past and the uncertain future that was closing in on me. She listened when others seemed to be too busy to show concern. And she agreed to write a letter of recommendation for me when I decided to apply for the Guardian Scholars Program, a program committed to helping ambitious, college-bound students exit the foster care system.
I found new ambition through Mrs. Sase’s support and devotion to my academic and personal success. Gradually, not only did my grades improve, but my confidence also improved.
The most amazing thing about Mrs. Sase was that I was just one of an army of students who would confess that Mrs. Sase had changed their lives. Her entire classroom was filled with letters of utmost appreciation for her and the life-changing impact she had on so many students.
Once, Mrs. Sase was in hospital for a week, during which we students visited her in turns and tried our best to do something for her because in our mind Mrs. Sase was an angel who spread her wings far and wide.
