M: Hello, Freya. Mountain biking is a popular sport among teenagers but there are fewer girls doing it. Am I right?
W: Yes, although we' re growing in numbers. When I was 13, my dad bought my brother a mountain bike but I was given an ordinary one. I really wanted to join my brother, so in the end my uncle got one for me.
M: And now you' re a winner?
W: Yes. I just won the Regional Championship. It was a difficult course with lots of rocks. At one point I thought I wasn't going to win. I was ahead and then I had to slow down because a photographer jumped out from behind a tree.
M: What do you think is the most important before a race?
W: Well, there's much to do. Take plenty of exercise to keep fit. Check the route in advance. And the most important I think is that you must make sure everything s working on the bike. If there's anything wrong with the bike, you will be in trouble. And the clothes shouldn't slow you down so they need to be tight. They might feel a bit uncomfortable when you first put them on, but you will soon get used to them. I'm not bothered about not looking pretty—I just want to win.

The hotel is around 12 feet wide and 35 feet long. It plans to welcome its first guests in 2022. It will fly 320 kilometers above Earth. It can hold six people at a time. Two of them will be workers. They may be former NASA astronauts. Each trip aboard the station will last for 12 days. Guests there will be able to do many interesting things. For example, they will see around 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. They can take part in research experiments such as growing food in space. Later, they can bring the food back to earth as a souvenir. These are the same things as astronauts usually do. Guests can also share what they see and hear with others on Earth. Two words can sum up the life of Dr. Catana Starks—determination and achievement. Now the story of one of her many accomplishments—she’s the first African-American woman in history to coach a male college sports team—is a movie!
The story is about Starks, who was the golf coach at her alma mater(母校) Tennessee State University, a traditionally Black College in Nashville. Starks’ distinctive coaching style and her achievements in the face of many challenges in her position and in life is what will leave audiences inspired. She had to drive the team bus, wash her players’ golf clothes, and had to constantly find places for her team to practice. Starks credits her strength to one woman in her life—her mother.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Starks was diagnosed with severe asthma(哮喘). Doctors told her mother she could never participate in sports. “My mother, she had an almost mystical belief of not being limited by circumstances”, says Starks, “so I grew up with a basketball goal in the backyard.” Asthma wasn’t the only challenge; she grew up in the segregated(被隔离的) South of the 1940s, “I learned to swim. I had to walk four miles in Mobile to get to a Black pool”.
After getting the men’s golf coach job, Starks couldn’t find golfers. None of the males on campus would play. “Initially that didn’t work out because I was female,” said Starks. She had to innovate by recruiting internationally, via telephone. The calls attracted players from Sweden to South Africa. During nearly twenty years in her charge her former players have distinguished themselves throughout the world including: Sam Puryear, the former Michigan State University golf coach-the first African American in its history, and Robert Dinwiddie, an All-American golfer at TSU and a current member of the European Tour having achieved three consecutive Top-10 finishes in South Africa. Starks’ determination really paid off when the T-State Tigers won the National Minority Golf Championship in 2005. And another distinction for her career, ninety percent of the players graduated!
24. Which of the following is NOT a challenge Starks faced in her career?
A. Being the team bus driver.
B. Doing the laundry for her players.
C. Walking to the Black swimming pool.
D. Finding venues for team practice.
25. What did Starks learn from her mother?
A. An optimistic attitude towards life.
B. Her distinctive coaching style.
C. A willingness to push the limits of her body.
D. A strong will to overcome tough situations.
26. Starks had a rough start as a golf coach because of _________.
A. racial discrimination B. her gender
C. her physical condition D. her lack of experience

C. practice makes perfect D. equality is greater than division
C 25. D 26. B 27. A

C
Maybe you’re depressed because you didn’t sleep well. Or you feel stuck when you read an email with some bad news that prevented your enthusiastic imagination. Whatever the case may be, you tell yourself working now is in vain (徒劳的), because you couldn’t possibly come up with anything inventive in this mood.
Several studies in psychology have shown that negative emotions narrow our vision and limit our thinking. However, positive emotions can improve creativity because they broaden our way of thinking by encouraging us to try new things or look at situations differently.
Creativity is the ability to produce and carry out both new and useful ideas. Creativity can result from a person’s own creative ideas and observations, or it can appear as a response to a direct assignment or problem as well.
Both positive and negative moods can lead to two different kinds of creativity that benefit different tasks. Research shows that the key factor influencing our creativity is not our mood itself, but the strength of our feelings and the motivation (动机) behind our work. For example, anger or anxiety can help us to focus our attention on producing effective results. Great excitement or joy, on the other hand, can encourage an instant at which the solution to a problem becomes clear all of a sudden. In fact, one study even finds that while we’re 20 percent more likely to have creative abilities to understand mixed situations when we’re feeling good, people in a negative mood perform better when the quality of solutions—not quantity—matters most.
But of course, we are rarely entirely happy or entirely sad. More often, we experience mixed emotions. In psychology, these strong emotions whether they are positive or negative, lead to greater creative actions.
It comes as no surprise then that highly creative people tend to be very familiar with their emotions. They report experiencing very strong emotions more frequently than less creative people and are more willing to experience those emotions.
28. What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph?
A. To expect us to be creative.
B. To show the importance of creativity.
C. To tell us negative emotions exist everywhere.
D. To clarify how moods influence your creativity.
29 What is the attitude of the author towards negative emotions?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
30. What can be learned in the passage?
A. We should always try to keep ourselves in good mood.
B. People feel either very happy or very sad most of the time.
C. Strong emotions play an important role in creativity.
D. Creativity only results from creative ideas and observations.
31. According to the passage, what should you do to get more creative?
A. Avoid negative moods totally.
B. Face up to inner feelings positively.
C. Try out new things cautiously.
D. Understand mixed situations clearly.
D 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第一段的“Maybe you’re depressed because you didn’t sleep well. Or you feel stuck when you read an email with some bad news that prevented your enthusiastic imagination.”(也许你因为睡眠不好而沮丧。 再根据第一段“Whatever the case may be, you tell yourself working now is in vain (徒劳的), because you couldn’t possibly come up with anything inventive in this mood.”(不管是什么情况,你都会告诉自己现在工作是徒劳的,因为在这种心情下,你不可能想出任何有创意的东西。)
根据第四段关键句“Both positive and negative moods can lead to two different kinds of creativity that benefit different tasks.”(积极和消极的情绪能产生两种不同的创造力,对不同的任务有益。)和“Research shows that the key factor influencing our creativity is not our mood itself, but the strength of our feelings and the motivation (动机) behind our work.”(研究表明,影响我们创造力的关键因素不是我们的情绪本身,而是我们感觉的力量和工作背后的动机。)
根据最后一段内容“It comes as no surprise then that highly creative people tend to be very familiar with their emotions. They report experiencing very strong emotions more frequently than less creative people and are more willing to experience those emotions.”(因此,高度创造性的人往往对自己的情绪非常熟悉,这就不足为奇了。
根据文章第四段关键句“Research shows that the key factor influencing our creativity is not our mood itself, but the strength of our feelings and the motivation (动机) behind our work.”(研究表明,影响我们创造力的关键因素不是我们的情绪本身,而是我们感觉的力量和工作背后的动机。)和最后一段关键句“They report experiencing very strong emotions more frequently than less creative people and are more willing to experience those emotions.”(报告说,他们比缺乏创造力的人更频繁地经历强烈的情绪,并且更愿意体验这些情绪。)

In an effort to fight the “throw-away culture” and promote reuse and repair, the city of Berlin has taken the unique step of opening its own secondhand department store.
This isn’t your grandma’s thrift shop It resells perfectly good items that would otherwise be thrown away. A pun on the German words for “department store” and “conserving house”, B-Wa(h)renhaus sells a wide variety of products. Far from simply selling old items, the electronic goods have been fixed by expert technicians and come with a year’s guarantee. And, to reach more secondhand shoppers, the store was set up right in the middle of the famous Karstadt department store.
With the success of its initial six-month trial run, the city plans to open four more similar operations in other parts of Berlin. By 2030, it hopes to have at least one location in each of Berlin’s 12 districts. Since 2008, city policies and educational campaigns have reduced average annual household waste by about 25 pounds per resident. It also recycles about 49% of its mineral construction waste. Currently, the city estimates that 8% of abandoned electronic goods and 6% of huge items thrown away can actually be reused. The goal is to expand the market for these items beyond the usual bargain hunters and eco-conscious consumers.
“Three years ago, we started collecting all kinds of used goods,” city spokesperson Dorothee Winden said. “There are lots of things that are well-preserved and functioning but aren’t being used anymore. The goal is to give these things a new life with somebody who can use them.” The store also includes an education center to encourage more sustainable lifestyles — and also gave an award to a project that recycles school uniforms, so that parents don’t have to buy new ones every year.
32. Why has Berlin opened its own secondhand department store?
A. To attract more shoppers. B. To promote recycling.
C. To foster traditional culture. D. To expand secondhand market.
33. In which aspect is B-Wa(h)renhaus different from the traditional thrift store?
A. The variety of the goods. B. The location of the store.
C. The quality of the products. D. The operation of the store.
34. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Berlin currently has 4 second-hand stores in construction.
B. Berlin has been successful in cutting its waste since 2008.
C. It is not easy to make the goal to expand the market a reality.
D. It is estimated that Berlin will be a zero-waste city by 2030.
35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce Berlin’s new reuse shop operation.
B. To raise people’s awareness of reasonable shopping.
C. To persuade people to become eco-friendly shoppers.
D. To encourage more people to donate to secondhand shops.
B 33. C 34. B 35. A

Take a bottle of soda, and shake it really hard. Gas will form inside, causing a buildup of pressure. Twist the cap off. Pressure will be released from the bottle, and soda will shoot everywhere.
___36___. Pressure builds up inside a volcano as gas forms in magma (岩浆), which is hot liquid rock beneath the surface of the earth. Gas bubbles in the volcano need to escape. When a volcano erupts, magma is pushed up through the opening with great force. When magma reaches the earth’s surface, it’s called lava (熔岩).

根据前文“Take a bottle of soda, and shake it really hard. Gas will form inside, causing a buildup of pressure. Twist the cap off. Pressure will be released from the bottle, and soda will shoot everywhere.”(拿瓶苏打水,用力摇晃。 可知,选项A中的the same way就是指指苏打水从瓶子里喷出来的方式,根据后文“Pressure builds up inside a volcano as gas forms in magma (岩浆), which is hot liquid rock beneath the surface of the earth. Gas bubbles in the volcano need to escape. When a volcano erupts, magma is pushed up through the opening with great force.”(当气体在岩浆中形成时,压力在火山内部积聚(岩浆), 它是地球表面下的热液体岩石。
根据前文“The intensity of an eruption depends on a few factors. One is the magma’s temperature. Another is the magma’s thickness.”(喷发的强度取决于几个因素。
根据后文“The Hawaiian Islands were created by the eruptions of large low-lying volcanoes which are made up of layers of hardened lava.”(夏威夷群岛是由大型低洼火山喷发形成的,这些火山是由坚硬的熔岩层组成的。)可知,此处是讲火山喷发也会创造新的土地,对应选项A中的“they can also create new land”(它们还可以创造新的土地),又和前文“Volcanoes can be destructive.”(火山具有破坏性。) 故选A。
根据后文“Ash from volcanoes adds helpful minerals to soil. This helps plants grow strong. Healthy plants produce oxygen for humans and animals to breathe. Volcanoes also remove heat from the earth’s interior (内部), which helps keep our planet cool.”(火山灰为土壤添加了有益的矿物质。
根据后文“Their measures involve using the heat beneath the earth’s surface to produce electricity.”(他们的措施包括利用地表下的热量发电。)和前文“In recent years, a new benefit of volcanoes has surfaced.”(近年来,火山的一个新的好处浮出水面。)

"Missy," I cried to my wife, "did you put the banana skin on my desk?" "No, honey, Meghan probably did," As I'd feared, she had missed my real purpose of the question which was to make it clear to her that she hadn't done her job: defend my desk against the invader--our naughty girl.
I abandoned the conversation.
I sat here at the desk, and stared at the screen. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me, exam questions for a test I would give my English students. My wife was off to a reunion somewhere, but I was not alone. Meghan, our 22-month-old daughter, kept me company. Yet her plans that day seemed to go against mine.
She followed a daily routine that was both time-consuming and challenging. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping the carpet in her room, climbing up and down her bed.
At first I could concentrate on designing my test paper. But I was soon sidetracked(分心的).I had not counted on the arrival of the "bib-bibs" ("Bib-bibs" were birds). "Bib-bibs, bib-bibs!" Meghan screamed excitedly, her eyes alive with expectation. She insisted that I go with her to the window.
"In a second, just let me finish this question," I said. She pulled me by the hand (two fingers, actually) toward the window. I saw myself as a fool, being led to watch the bib-bibs. And we did watch them. They chattered and leaped back and forth on the lawn just outside our apartment window. Meghan was absorbed, but as I watched them, I still thought about my work.
Suddenly she rushed out from the room, and I heard her naked feet slapping against the wooden floor outside. She returned with her doll, Dumpty. She held him up to the window, stretching him out by his two arms and whispering into his nonexistent ear. "Bib-bibs, Dumpty, bib-bibs!" Then I left them in conversation and returned to my desk.
注意:
1、续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Unfortunately, she came again soon, with her shoes in hands and preparing for an outing.
Paragraph 2:
Out of the comer of my eye I could see the little girl sobbing because I didn't have time for her
Paragraph 1:
Unfortunately, she soon came again, with her shoes in hands and preparing for an outing. “Don’t even ask, Meghan. Not today.” I knew her plan too well: First the shoes. Then the stroller. And pretty soon we were in the park. The way she always did. Having sensed my impatience with her, Meghan put down the shoes, tugged at my sleeve with her free hands and pleaded using her hard to understand baby talk. “No, Meghan,” I said again. “Not now. Go away and leave me alone.” Finally, she left. She made no further attempt to bother me. Then I tried to concentrate on the test paper.
Paragraph 2:
Out of the corner of my eye I could see the little girl sobbing because I didn’t have time for her. She stood with her back against the sofa, watching me type and slowly brushing Dumpty’s arm for comfort. Obviously Dumpty was doing my job to keep her company. I suddenly felt guilty. “Meghan, I feel like taking a walk down to the park. I was wondering if you would like to join me.” Hearing this, she laughed excitedly and began the search for her shoes. I knew I should put aside my work and go right at the moment while my girl thought that a walk with her father was a gift beyond measure.
如:put down;go away;leave sb. alone; make no attempt to;concentrate on;would like to do;put aside;search for等固定短语。①Having sensed my impatience with her, Meghan put down the shoes, tugged at my sleeve with her free hands and pleaded using her hard to understand baby talk. I knew I should put aside my work and go right at the moment while my girl thought that a walk with her father was a gift beyond measure.中I should put aside my work and go right at the moment为省略了that的宾语从句,that a walk with her father was a gift beyond measure.
