Hiking, a kind of interaction with nature, provides fantastic exercise, combining sightseeing and workouts into one. Here are some unforgettable hiking vacations that will lead you into the thick of your destination.
    Larapinta Trail, Australia
Dying for a good hike through the outback(内陆)? Then head to Australia’ s Larapinta Trail, a 130-mile trip through the Northern Territory of the island continent. Almost the entire hike is desert. Perhaps the best way to end a long day in the hot Australian sun is to watch the pink-and-orange sunset, open a sleeping bag and look up. Repeat visitors to the Larapinta say this part of Australia offers some of the best stargazing in the world.
    Inca Trail, Peru
Today, as part of an effort to minimize environmental impact, trail(线路) access is limited to 500 people per day, and most hikers participate as part of guided groups. And the most thoughtful thing is that the groups hire porters to carry the luggage, so hikers need only to worry about enjoying the scenery! Most of these organized trails include tent accommodations and surprisingly delicious three-course meals. Of course, they also include a final day at Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas”.
    Cape Scott Trail, British Columbia
To call the five-day hike challenging would be the understatement of the century. The adventure begins gradually. From the trailhead at Cape Scott Provincial Park, the trail follows an old settler's road along a stream through a 4-mile stretch of wetland. With every step, the mud threatens to add to what surely has become a sizable boot collection. Because the rivers are so wide, visitors have to take the cable-car.
    Via Ferrata, Italy
The trails themselves date to World War I, when Italian forces built them as a way to move soldiers from one section of the Alps to another. Today, with the war in the distant past, the routes provide the perfect venue for hikers looking for a day-long escape.
21.What attracts visitors most for Larapinta Trail?
A.Having the longest hike. B.Touring the continent.
C.Exploring in the desert. D.Watching the starry sky.
    22.What makes Inca Trail sweet?
A.Free accommodations are provided. B.Hikers needn't take their luggage.
C.Hikers themselves serve as guides. D.The meals are specially cooked.
23.Which of the following trails might be risky for hikers?
    A.Inca Trail. B.Larapinta Trail.
    C.Cape Scott Trail. D.Via Ferrata
    B
Earlier this year, a physician emailed me to thank me for an essay I wrote. I couldn’t believe he could find the essay—after all, 18 years had passed since it was published. But he had found the piece—my first narrative (叙事体的) medicine article about my experience parenting a son with a complex medical disorder—in a drawer he was cleaning out as he prepared to retire. He had tracked me down to share how important such articles were to him during his years caring for patients. I was touched and reminded of how important these pieces were to my own professional and personal journey.
At the time, major medical journals were beginning to publish narrative pieces. I submitted my first article, hopeful that it might make a difference for others—and confirm some productivity during this time. But I was also nervous about the potential exposure. I was surprised and thrilled when it was accepted for publication, and readers’ sympathy, constructive responses alleviated my concerns about sharing my family’s story.
Over the following years. I somehow made it to a researcher. Our youngest daughter was born; our son was diagnosed (诊断) with Schwartz-Jampel syndrome (综合症); and I took 5 months away from my study to help him get the support services he needed. Through it all, the narrative articles continued to flow. Writing about our expended family of health care providers and the need for family mental health services was highly smooth, and reading st rangers’ responses was equally effective.
In the year after returning to my career. I wrote my first funded proposals, to study the impact of traumatic (创伤性) health care events on providers, patients, and families, and to examine why patients do or don’t seek help for depression. I probably would not have taken these directions with my research if the topics had not been such a vital part of my life. But I realized that there didn’t need to be a division between my personal pain and the enthusiasms that fueled my research. Instead. I could imagine and create a life that satisfied my needs for my research, my family, and myself.
24.What was the author’s first narrative medicine article about?
A.The reasons for patients refusing to seek help for depression.
B.The influence of traumatic health care events on families.
C.The appreciation from a doctor approaching his retirement.
D.The story of caring for a son with a rare disorder.
25.What docs the underlined word “alleviated” mean in paragraph 2?
    A.Caused. B.Reduced. C.Described. D.Strengthened.
26.What can be inferred about the author from the text?
A.She has a habit of writing. B.She only has a son.
C.She suffers from the depression. D.She stays away from her family.
27.What conclusion can we make according to the text?
    A.Wasting time is robbing oneself.
B.God helps those who help themselves.
C.Being on sea, sail; being on land, settle.
D.All things in their being are good for something..
    C
Pottery (制陶) may be the oldest artwork of human beings. As far back to more than 8, 000 years ago, people began mixing clay and water then baking it until it held its shape. People attached the word “pottery” to their discovery. For a more convenient and better life, ancient people used it to create various containers and tools to cook, to store things, and to hold cuisine or water as dishes.
As time passed, the technique became mature. Different kinds of pottery appeared in different times and regions. Yangshao Culture, 5, 000-7, 000 years ago to today, developed a technique for painted ceramic wares (陶器). Qujialing Culture and Longshan Culture, about 4, 000 years ago, were known for their black ceramic wares. During the Shang Dynasty (16th -11th century BC) bronze containers grew into somewhat of a status symbol; common people, though, still used traditional clay ceramic wares. From the Warring States Period through the Han Dynasty, the art and culture of pottery boomed. The Terra Cotta Warriors, discovered in Xi'an, are the finest representatives of artworks of that time.
A representative example of pottery is the tricolor glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty(618-907), known as Tangsancai in Chinese. The pottery would appear to. be light yellow, reddish brown, or light green but the most popular were those of yellow, brown and green. The sculpture of figures, animals or daily appliances was amazingly in accord with the characteristics of Tang art -graceful and lively. Preferred by many foreigners to the region, such pottery had been transported worldwide.
Another choice pottery that won great reputation for hundreds of years is purple clay pottery. It is well- known for its mild color, concentrated structure, high intensity and fine particles (微粒). As early as the Song Dynasty (960-1279), people found purple-clay teapots to look much more graceful than those of other materials. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, tea developed as a simple and tasteful art. Modem people still delight in this classic fashion ideal.
    28.Why was pottery originally used?
A.To add more to farm took. B.To mark private properties.
C.To build up a stock of food. D.To enhance the quality of life.
29.When could pottery be used to identify one’s social status?
    A.Around 6, 000 years ago. B.During the Shang Dynasty.
C.From the Warring States Period. D.Throughout the Han Dynasty.
30.What can be known about Tangsancai from Paragraph 3?
A.It combined pottery with typical Tang art. B.It represented common people’s daily life.
C.It adopted the most popular three colors. D.It was well-received by all foreigners.
31.The text is mainly written to ______.
A.explain why pottery was created B.display fine examples of ancient pottery
C.introduce pottery-related information D.explore the colors applied to pottery

A new UBC Okanagan study finds children not only get the benefits of working with therapy dogs — they enjoy it too.
“Dog lovers often have an assumption that dog-assisted therapy is going to be effective because other people are going to love dogs.” says Nicole Harris, who conduct this research while a master student in the School of Education. The research saw 22 children from the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club take part in a series of courses to help them build their social skills. Over six weeks, the children were accompanied by therapy dogs from UBC Okanagan as they completed lessons.
Each week the children were taught a new skill, such as introducing themselves or giving directions to others. The children would first practice with their given therapy dog before running through the exercise with the rest of the group. In the final time, the children — accompanied by their new furry friend and volunteer handler — would practice their new skills with university students located in the building.
“Therapy dogs are often able to reach children and help their growth in surprising ways. We saw evidence of this in the social skills of children when they were paired with a therapy clog.” says Dr John-Tyler Binfet, associate professor in the School of Education and director of BARK. “The dogs helped create a non-threatening climate while the children were learning these new skills. We saw the children practice and train their social skills with and alongside the dogs.”
“Findings from our observations suggested that dog-assisted social and feeling learning activities can provide unique advantages.” says Harris. “Our team saw that by interacting with the therapy dogs, the children’s moods improved and their engagement in their lessons increased.”
“Dogs have the ability to provide many stress-reducing and confidence-raising benefits to children.” says Harris. “It was really heart-warming to see the effect the program had on the kids.”
32.What is the purpose of the research in the text?
A.To get people to love dogs. B.To help children be sociable.
    C.To get a peaceful climate. D.To improve children’s confidence.
33.What does the underlined words “new furry friend” refer to in paragraph 3?
A.A volunteer handler. B.A university student.
C.A kid in the club. D.A therapy dog.
34.Which is one of the unique advantages of the program?
A.Kids lx, gin to love dogs. B.Kids are willing to help others.
C.Kids succeed in introducing themselves. D.Kids attend their lessons more actively.
35.What is Harris’ attitude towards the program mentioned in the text?
    A.Favorable. B.Ambiguous. C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving

Self-esteem is the ruling view you have of yourself. This includes your beliefs about your inner qualities and how you think others see you. ___36___ Someone can develop low self-esteem even when they are highly functional and greatly skilled. Understanding this mysterious emotional currency might be the key to unlocking your own self-worth.
People with healthy self-esteem don't need to boast about themselves to others. People with low self-esteem may tell you how much everyone loves them, what a great job they do at work, and how amazing they are at pretty everything under the sun even though they really wonder if it's true. People may see them as obnoxious or "full of themselves". ___37___ They are not shy about sharing ideas, including constructive criticisms of others. They also take care of themselves without second-guessing or apologizing. They are the people who we say seem "sure of themselves".
If you're starting to think you may have low self-esteem, you can work on the way you talk to yourself. When you turn off negative self-talk, you can open the floor to positive reinforcements and access the courage to show different sides of yourself. It isn't going to feel good at first, though. Keep going until it becomes less and less and maybe even a few awkward laughs in the mirror may help. ___38___
However, in serious cases of low or even non-existent self-esteem, you may want to call in a professional or a specialist. Good mental health is important, and professionals doing psychotherapy do not pass judgement or give corrections. ___39___ It is the best way to get at the roots of your real self-esteem problems.
___40___ It will take some work but your entire life—from your relationships to your body image to your work habits—will be touched with the kind of power that only comes from someone believing in themselves. This is the hardest part, and the greatest leap. With some changes and support, you can improve your self-esteem and see how everything else changes as a result.
A.Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality, though.
B.You have the power to shape a new self-perception
C.This encourages you to speak openly without worry.
D.The real test of character is whether they can learn from their mistakes
E.Self-esteem refers to a person's overall sense of his or her value or worth.
F.People with a healthy level of self-esteem present themselves with a casual confidence.
G.With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth.

Emma sighed for many times. However hard she tried, she couldn't shake off her disappointment. She and her best friend, Amy, had been planning a shopping day for weeks.
So busy had they been with their final exams that they barely had time to text each other. Emma looked at her empty desk and was reminded of how she had exhausted herself to the breaking point to get ahead in her class, so that she could spend the whole day with Amy. It seemed as if their time together wasn't as important to Amy considering the fact that she had called her a few minutes ago to tell her that she wouldn't be able to keep her promise. Apparently, her other friends dragged her away for a weekend.
Emma tried to take a deep breath even though there was an invisible heavy weight around her heart. She hated to act like someone who was eager for attention, so she just laughed off their plans in front of Amy and made a half-hearted attempt to reschedule them. She sat down heavily in her chair and opened her books.
For the next couple of days, she didn't get any texts or calls from Amy. Her calls went straight to voicemail and her texts were unread. Emily didn’t think too much of this and reasoned that she must have been busy with her new friends.
After a few more days of no contact with Amy, she felt anxious and wondered what had happened, because Amy never ignored her calls. She decided to visit her professors. The trip took her about half an hour. On her arrival, she searched the unfamiliar building for the right class number. She knocked on the door and tapped her foot impatiently. The professor told her Amy was working part-time in the cafe on the other side of the campus.

M: Not great. The first night we stayed at one of those camping areas where you need to pay to get in. There were too many people there, though. (8) (9)
    W: So, what happened next?
M: The next day we decided to hike about four hours to a spot where there wasn’t anybody around. (9) That was a big mistake.
    W: Why?
M: None of us brought anything to make a fire with. Then it started raining, and we realized even with our warm clothes it was too cold to stay overnight.
W: So what did you do?
M: We hiked back to the original camping area in complete darkness. We left the next morning because everyone was too tired from the night before. (9) What did you do?
W: I watched a movie at home by a nice wood fire.
    Text 8
M: Roger is so intelligent. (10) He thinks for himself. He’s a hard worker. He has good ideas and he doesn’t follow the crowd.
W: So why does he do so badly in his exams? (10)
M: Because he suffers from anxiety. He lacks confidence. (10) His brain is so active and he thinks too much. When it comes to exams, his intelligence actually works against him.
W: I wish we could help him. It seems so unfair that a person’s future can be determined by how well they perform on one particular day.
M: It is unfair — but life is unfair. We must try to help him by showing him how to keep calm in stressful situations. (11)
W: How do we do that? I can’t say that I’m exactly an expert at dealing with stress, although I am better at it than I used to be.
M: I can help him. I always think that exercise is a great way for dealing with stress and anxiety. When you have exhausted yourself while doing exercise, you don’t have the energy to be nervous. (12)
W: That is so right! I always feel calm after working out in the gym. (12)
    Text 9
M: How is the job hunt going? (13)
W: I’ve applied to more than 20 jobs and had three interviews. I got two job offers but I do not really like either of them. (13)
    M: Why not?
W: Neither of them gave me a good salary offer. I think I deserve more than that.
M: Have you researched what kind of salary your position should earn?
W: Yes, and I should be getting much more than what they are offering me.
M: Well, do you like the companies and the benefits they are offering you?
W: I do, especially one of them called The Creator. (14) They got a lot of great reviews from their employees, and they are offering a great benefits package which includes medical and dental insurance and more holiday time than any other company. (14)
M: That’s great. Don’t just decline the job offer. You know what, you can negotiate the salary offer they give you. (16)
W: I’d been at the company we were at for so long. (15) I forgot about the job process. I am a little worried about asking for more.
M: Listen! If they offered you a job, that means they want you! Especially in your field, data analytics, you are needed in today’s job market. Everyone needs people to figure out what to do with all the data being collected.
W: You have a point. I will give them a call right now. (16)
    Text 10 (第20题为总结题)
Hello everyone, and thank you for inviting me to speak at your school. (17) Now here is a big word for you — volcanologist. That is my job. Volcanology is the study of volcanoes and I spend much of my time traveling to volcanoes around the world. China can count itself lucky. It doesn’t have many active volcanoes. The last one to erupt was in 1951. My job has taken me to many countries, from Italy to the U.S. I have just come back from Indonesia, (18) one of the most active volcanic areas. So why is my job important? Because when we understand volcanoes, we can predict how they will behave and help protect the people who live near them from possible harm. When we think of volcanoes erupting, we think of rocks but perhaps the biggest danger is from ash. There have been some very famous volcano eruptions. Krakatoa, in Indonesia, erupted in 1883, killing over 36,000 people. Santorini, in Greece, was ruined by an explosion about 3600 years ago. But the most famous eruption was Vesuvius in Italy in 79 AD. (19) Ash from the explosion buried the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, preserving them so well that we can now visit them today. They are a treasure for historians, so you could say every volcanic cloud has a silver lining.

But why did she have to take a part-time job and had no time to reply to my texts? Emma walked quickly to the counter. When Amy looked up to serve the next customer, her eyes widened. Minutes later, Emma rushed in with the same uniform in her hand. She told Amy she had made a decision to work with her and hoped to be of some help. Amy’s smile was all the answer.
