He’s a comedian, he’s an actor, he’s British and the whole world knows him as the silent, black-haired character, Mr Bean. That’s right, Rowan Atkinson.

Atkinson was born in Newcastle, England and was educated at Newcastle University and Oxford. While at Oxford, he met the writer Richard Curtis, who was studying there too, and they became friends. Curtis was the opposite of Atkinson. He had great love for words while Atkinson enjoyed nonverbal comedy. Together they began writing comedy reviews for the Oxford Playhouse. Shortly afterwards, Atkinson began appearing in smaller theatres in Edinburgh. After a show at the Hampstead Theatre in 1978, he was offered a part in the BBC series Not the Nine o’clock News. The series got off to a slow start, but soon became a huge success, with Atkinson winning a BAFTA award for his work. However, being a very sensible man, Atkinson saw the whole acting job as a hobby, along with his growing interest in car racing.

Atkinson made his big-screen debut(初次亮相) in 1983’s unofficial James Bond film Never Say Never Again. The same year Atkinson appeared in the BBC series called Black Adder. The main hero named Edmund, tries unsuccessfully to become King of England after accidentally killing his uncle Richard III during a battle. This was followed by three hugely successful sequels each set in a different era of England’s history. The Black Adder series was voted the Best Comedy Show of the Year in 1990. He then went on to create Mr Bean. A walking disaster, Bean was purely physical comedy, the opposite of Edmund. This character was a huge success and became another national treasure. In 1997 Bean came to the big screen. A few years later, Scooby Doo became a box-office hit in the US in 2002. This was followed by Johnny English in 2003, a funny work of James Bond films.

In his spare time Atkinson collects classic cars and takes part in races. He also writes for the British magazines CAR. He is a very shy man, and has managed to keep his private life, private.

On average, Americans spend about 10 hours a day in front of a computer or other electronic devices and less than 30 minutes a day outdoors. That is a claim by David Strayer, a professor of psychology at the University of Utah. In his 2017 TED Talk, Strayer explained that all this time spent with technology is making our brains tired.

Using an electronic device to answer emails, listen to the news and browse the web puts a lot of pressure on the front of the brain, which, Strayer explains, is important for critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making.

Therefore, it is important to give the brain a rest. And being in nature, Strayer claims, helps a tired brain away from too much technology. More than 15, 000 campers from around the world attended an international camping festival in September. That is when friends and family take time off and escape to nature for several days. They take walks, climb, explore, swim, sleep, eat and play. Camping may be just what a tired brain needs.

Take Carl for example. He lives in West Virginia and enjoys camping. He says that staying outdoors makes him feel at ease. It also prepares him for the work he must do. Kate Somers is another example who also lives in West Virginia. She says she enjoys camping with her husband and two children. She calls it a “regenerative” experience.

At the University of Utah, David Strayer has studied both short-term and long-term exposure to nature. He found that spending short amounts of time in nature without technology does calm the brain and helps it to remember better. However, he found, it is the long-term contact with nature that does the most good. He and his research team found that spending three days in nature without any technology is enough time for the brain to fully relax and reset itself.

    28. According to David Strayer, which of the following is true?

     A. Americans dislike outdoor activities.

     B. Electronic equipment should be quitted.

     C. New technologies also have some downsides.

     D. Electronic equipment brings great convenience.

    29. Why does Strayer insist we go outdoors?

       A. To try another lifestyle.                 B. To let our brain relax.

       C. To make better decisions.               D. To play with our family and friends.

    30. What does the underlined word “regenerative” mean?

     A. Refreshing       B. Memorable   C. Remarkable       D. Tiring

    31. Which is the proper title for the passage?

       A. Electronic Equipment Harms the Brain    B. Good Rest Develops Good Memory

       C. Tips on Using New Technologies     D. Being in Nature Is Good for the Brain

    D

One of the hardest lessons I have ever learnt in life is that we can’t make things perfect. You see, I was raised the same way as the rest of you, learning stories with happy endings, such as “and they lived happily ever after”. I grew up knowing that I would meet with conflicts and struggles in life, but I always seemed to think that in the end troubles would be overcome and that I would live happily ever after.

But life doesn’t work like that. Troubles, pains, conflicts and struggles don’t end at some point in our lives. We don’t get awarded with a perfect life for being good. Relationship problems, financial troubles, health issues continue and must be dealt with throughout our lives. Life, as it seems, is not perfect and never will be, no matter how hard we try to make it so.

Not only is life imperfect, but we are as well. We are all human beings and we all make mistakes. We all have shortcomings and faults in our personalities. No matter how hard we try, we will not be perfect. No matter how hard we try, we will never find that perfect person who will make our lives perfect.

What can we do then? What can we do once we give up on life being perfect, and ourselves being perfect? Well, for me at least I can be relaxed and just enjoy the moment. I can feel peaceful and happy while living in the moment instead of worrying about “ever after”. I can try to avoid the negative feelings from anger, guilt, and depression. Relax and enjoy this wonderful life.

    1. The underlined word “that” in the second paragraph probably refers to________.

    A. troubles and pains will never end in one’s life time

    B. only characters in some stories can lead a happy life

    C. one can live happily without troubles after one grows up

       D. after some troubles are overcome, there will be no more

    33. What is the author’s opinion?

       A. Troubles are just part of life.

       B. A perfect life can be a reward to us.

     C. Financial problems in life are just contemporary.

       D. People working hard can have a perfect life.

    34. What is the third paragraph mainly about?

       A. Human beings are imperfect.             B. Personalities determine one’s life.

       C. People should improve their personalities.  D. No one can change his/her personality.

    35. How does the author deal with his present life?

       A. Giving up working hard.        B. Focus on enjoyment in the moment.

       C. Try hard to change his life.         D. Overcome his shortcomings.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

When we are living a balanced life, we are more productive and more successful. To live life to the fullest, we want to be functioning at our best by taking care of ourselves in every area of our lives.  36

    Where do you need balance?

37  . Whether it is work, health, diet, relationships, or exercise, decide which you need to work on most. Don’t increase your stress by feeling overcome. Balance doesn’t have to be achieved in one day.

    Keep a positive attitude.

Things do not always work out the way we plan. Keep a positive attitude. Go with the flow of the universe and be flexible. Trust that somehow things will work out.  38  Keep your eyes open for them to appear.

    Let things go.

Turn off the flow of overpowering and let things go. Does the car really need to be cleaned out right this moment?  39  Is it truly important to bake those biscuits before breakfast? Sometimes we get distracted and off track, and before we know it we are busy with what isn’t even on today’s list. Learn to let things go. Not every idea needs to be done the moment it is thought of.

      40

In today’s world we are all living life at a fast pace. Many of us are so used to feeling overpowered that it has become our natural state of being! Take a bath, go to the ocean and watch the waves, read, listen to some music, or take a walk in nature. Spend time out and free yourself from stress.

    A. Take time to get relaxed.

    B. Live life at a slow pace.

    C. Do you need to reorganize the cupboard now?

    D. New opportunities and solutions will present themselves.

    E. Hope my advice will help bring balance back to your life.

    F. It is better to bravely stick to what you have planned before.

    G. Find out which part of your life needs to be brought into balance.

How’s everything going? As my birthday is drawing near, I’ve been prepared a gift for you. It’s a Chinese ink painting of bamboo, that I drew specially for you.

In Chinese culture, bamboo carries many best wishes and excellent quality. It usually stands straight and stays green all year round, but it’s always full of life. It is hard outside but empty inside. If comparing to bamboo, one was generally considered to be strong-willed and modest. All on all, we use bamboo to represent a noble and gently person.
