I remember the first time I met Roy. He was telling a joke. When he reached the final line, everyone burst out laughing. “A popular boy,” I thought to myself. My name is Daniel. I was the new boy in the class. There were 33 students in my new class, and most people weren’t very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group and we became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters.
Five years later, Roy and I were still in the same class. But just a year ago Roy’s father was knocked over by a car. He died a few days later. The family had difficulty with finance. Roy changed completely. He started losing friends, including me.
About three months ago, a group of us were playing football together after school. Having left something in the classroom, I went inside to get it and found Roy going through the pockets of people’s coats. In his hand he had a wallet and I knew it wasn’t his. Roy went bright red. “I will put it back right now,” he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word. I really hoped that Roy would explain why he had been stealing, but instead he started avoiding me.
Last week, our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity and we made about £500. But to our surprise, the next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. This morning I decided to ask Roy about the theft so I went to see him. Roy was out. I put his jacket on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of notes and I pulled them out. It looked as if there were about £500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hand. And that moment, Roy walked in.

“You are stupid! You always mess things up! Now hand over your pocket money!”Jack shouted at me.I was frightened like a leaf in the wind.Jack was well-known as the school bully(校园霸王)who always liked to pick on me.I shouted back at him,”No!This is my parents’ hard-earned money!”
When Jack heard this,he stared at me.I got ready for a flight as I thought that Jack would beat me. Instead,he walked away quietly. It was unlike Jack.
After school,as I was about to walk home,I saw an unbelievable sight-Jack was crying? I approached him.“What do you want?” he asked. I sat down next to him and asked him what was wrong.“My father...passed away. He was the only breadwinner of the family. Now my mother needs to find a job but she cannot find one.” I took pity on poor Jack and hugged him. I took out the remaining lunch money I had and handed it over to him. Jack’s eyes nearly jumped out.He said,“You...you are actually giving this to me?”
I nodded my head and told him that it did not matter whether he was my enemy. I would help someone in need. After all,I also said there was no reason why we could not be friends. Tears ran down Jack’s face and he apologized for all his past actions.
Later,Jack and I became best friends. My mother, who was the boss of a company, gave Jack’s mother a job.During those months,Jack’s mother worked hard and rose to the position of a manager. In school,I would study with Jack and helped him out with his schoolwork. He improved and became one of the top three students in the class. All was well until one day Jack had something to tell me.“I have to leave Singapore and move overseas,” he said. I felt angry that Jack was just going to leave after all that I had done for him.I also felt sad because I will miss him.

Fiona Famous was a very popular girl at school. She was clever and fun, and got on well with everyone. It was no accident that Fiona was so popular. From an early age she had made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party, and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She was such a busy girl, with so many friends, that she hardly got a chance to spend time with individual friends. However, she felt very lucky; no other girl had so many friends at school and in the neighborhood.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, at school, everyone was having a great time, drawing, painting, and giving gifts. That day in class everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from all her friends.
However, when all the presents had been made and shared out among classmates, Fiona was the only one who didn't receive a present! She felt upset, and spent hours crying. How could it be that? So much effort had been made to make so many friends, but in the end no one saw her as their best friend. Everyone came and tried to comfort her. But each one only stayed for a short time before leaving.
This was exactly what Fiona had done so many times to others.
She realized that she was a good companion (伙伴),but she had not been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone, and had tried to pay attention to everyone, but now she found out that it was not enough to create true friendship.
When she got home that night with tears in her eyes, Fiona turned to her mother for help. She asked her mother where she could find true friends.

One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street comer. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.

Thus, he just ignored the other boys laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

It was my tenth birthday and I would have the biggest party ever. The guest list, which I kept at the back of my homework assignment folder, began with a few close friends. But in the two weeks before that special Friday night, it had quickly grown from seven girls to a total of seventeen. Nearly every girl in my fifth grade class had been invited to sleep over at my house for a big celebration. I was especially happy when each guest I invited excitedly accepted the invitation. It would be a night of scary stories, pizza and lots of presents. But as I later realized, I would truly treasure only one gift I received that night.
The family room was a flurry of shouts and bursts of laughter. We had just finished a game of Twister and were lining up for the limbo when the doorbell rang. I hardly paid attention to who might be at the door. What did it matter, really? Everyone I liked from school was there, in my family room, preparing to lean under the stick held by my two sisters.
“Judy, come here for a minute,” Mom called from the front door.
I rolled my eyes and shrugged to my friends as if to say, “Now who would dare bother me at a time like this?” What I really wanted to say was: It's tough being popular!
I rounded the bend toward the front door, then stopped. I knew my mouth dropped open and I could feel my face turning red, for there on the front porch stood Sarah Westley-the quiet girl who sat next to me in music class and she was holding a gift.
I thought about the growing list in the back of my assignment folder. How had I forgotten to invite Sarah?
I remembered that I only added a name to the list when someone had shown an interest in me. But Sarah had never done that. Never once had she asked me about my birthday party. Never once did she squeeze into the circle of kids surrounding me at lunch time. And once she even helped me carry my backpack while I dragged my science project to our third floor classroom.

Emily sighed for many times. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t shake off her disappointment. She and her best friend, Zatanna, had been planning a shopping day for weeks. They had been so busy for their final exams that they barely had time to text each other. Emily looked at her empty desk and was reminded of how she had exhausted herself to the breaking point to get ahead in her class, so that she could spend the whole day with Zatanna. It seemed as if their time together wasn’t as important to Zatanna considering the fact that she had called her a few minutes ago to tell her that she wouldn’t be able to keep her promise. Obviously, her other friends dragged her awayfor a weekend.
Emily tried to take a deep breath even though there was an invisible heavy weight around her heart. She hated to act like someone who was eager for attention, so she just laughed off their plans in front of Zatanna and made a half-hearted attempt to reschedule them. She sat down heavily in her chair and opened her books. “Might as well get some studying done,” she thought.
For the next couple of days, she didn’t get any texts or calls from Zatanna. Her calls went straight to voicemail and her texts were unread. She started to get worried. Zatanna never ignored her calls, Even if she was busy, she still responded, though a bit hastily (草率地). Emily didn’t think much of this and reasoned that she must have been busy with her new friends.
After a few more days of no contact with Zatanna, she felt anxious and thought of the worst-case scenario. She shook her head as if she could physically let those dark thoughts go. “I’ll visit her professor,” she thought with a determined shake of her head.

“Next Friday we’ll have the annual Egg Drop Challenge. The challenge is simple — you have to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall.” said Mr. Beal.
Cassie and I grinned at each other. Always working on projects together, we’re perfect combination. She’s brainy while I am creative.
While waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container, I made my favorite sandwich with the fluffy marshmallow (棉花糖) cream. That gave me an idea: We can put some marshmallow cream under the egg as a cushion.
I later told Cassie about it. But Cassie wasn’t interested. “I got a better idea. We put the egg in a basket with a parachute attached.” She said.
“It will never work.” I said.
“And Marshmallow cream will?” Cassie rolled her eyes. “The parachute is better than that stupid idea.”
I couldn’t believe it. She never called my idea “stupid” before. “Then I will build mine and you build yours, and we’ll just see whose is better.”
“Fine!” Cassie stormed out. And just like that, our friendship was smashed, like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.
When Friday arrived, I saw Cassie’s Egg Force One. She had a handkerchief to create a small parachute. It was tied to a basket and, in the center of it, her egg.
My Egg-cellent Egg Cream didn’t look quite scientific. I used a layer of marshmallow cream and a layer of jelly (果冻) to support the egg.
The competition started. Everyone in my class carried their egg containers up three stadium steps and dropped them over the side wall. If your egg broke, you were out. If the egg survived, you had to walk up three more steps and drop it again. This went on until the last egg broke.
By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left.

How can we celebrate the people we've never met who helped get us through the worst year of our life?
When I was a child, my grandmother often expressed the importance of communicating with everyone. When she walked down the street, she spoke to everyone. It did not matter if you were elderly or a child, or if you spoke English or Spanish. She had a smile and a conversation for you.
My grandmother's wisdom opened my mind to having a pen pal. This hobby-exchanging regular letters with someone on the other side of the world that you may never meet in person used to be popular in the 20th century. But many people consider the practice outdated in age of Facebook. Today, when I reveal that among my long time friendships is a relationship with a pen pal, with whom I communicate solely through long emails, people find it odd.
It isn't odd-it's wonderful. My relationship with my pen pal is one of the most valuable friendships I have ever had. even though I have never met her in person, or even heard her voice.
It all started in 2013. I was on my way to USC to meet Kerstin Zilm, a German radio personality who wanted to interview me about being a struggling student at Long Beach City College. After the interview, a woman named Renate reached out to Kerstin, inquiring how she could find me and help me financially with college. I thought it was great that Renate, who lives in Germany, wanted to assist with my education.
At first, Renate and I emailed each other twice a month. She wanted to know a lot more about my life growing up in Watts, my attempts to further my education, and whether there were ways beyond finances that she could help. I did not have a specific answer for her last question, but her moral support was important. With someone encouraging me and sponsoring my education, my spirits were greatly lifted up.

“Want to go to the pool tomorrow?” Rosa asked Stephanie during break time.
The pool Rosa mentioned was one of their favorite places.
Rosa and Stephanie did everything together. They rode the school bus together. They sat together during lunch. They took dance lessons together and even went to the same summer camp. They were best friends. Most of the time.
Sometimes, though, when Stephanie was with other friends, she ignored Rosa or treated her like a little kid, even though they were the same age.
Today was one of those times.
“Sorry. I’m already going to the pool,” Stephanie said. “Toni and Vanessa and I are going.” She smiled, but it wasn’t her nice smile. She walked away to join Toni and Vanessa, and Rose was left standing alone.
After school, at dance class, Stephanie talked and laughed with the other dancers as they stretched in front of the mirror. Rosa wanted to join them, but she still felt too upset.
Then she noticed Kiara, the new girl, standing with one leg up on the barre. Rosa joined her and began stretching, too. Kiara smiled, and Rosa smiled back. Rosa tried not to check the mirror to see if Stephanie had noticed. I hope she feels left out. Rosa thought.
The next morning, when Rosa got on the bus, Stephanie was waiting in their usual seat. Stephanie quickly moved her schoolbag off the seat to make room for Rosa. But Rosa walked past her and took the empty seat next to Kiara.
How does it feel now? Rosa thought.
On the bus ride, Rosa discovered that Kiara was not the quiet girl Rosa had thought she was. She talked a lot-about her little brother, about the tree house her uncle had built, and even about swimming.
“I love swimming!” Rosa said.
“Me too,” Kiara said. “My dad said he’d take my brother and me to swim tonight.”
“Great!” Rosa said.
“Maybe you can come with us tonight,” Kiara said. “That would be fun,” said Rosa.

I had moved to Arizona about two weeks before the start of my junior year school, so not only was this a new school for me, but also a new state and I did not know anyone.
On the first day of school at lunch after getting my meal, I sat down at an empty table in the courtyard. As I began to eat I looked around at the other tables and saw a girl sitting alone, so I decided why not go sit with her. Anyway there was no reason for me to have a whole table to myself, and who knew maybe I could make a friend. I walked to the girl quickly to check whether my guess was right. When I stood before her, I said, "Excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you? " She was surprised at first, but then smiled and said "Sure!".
We chatted happily while eating. I told her I was a newcomer and I had no friend. I expressed my intention to make friends with her. She said because of her body size, no one wanted to get close to her, so she was glad to have a friend. We became close friends throughout the next two years. Towards the end of our senior year she told me that she'd been accepted to an out of state college and would be moving away after graduation. I was sad that I would miss her but at the same time was really happy for her.
She then shared with me something very moving. "Do you remember the first day of school when you came over and sat down with me during lunch? " she asked. "Of course! why do you ask? " I replied. She continued, "I want to let you know how special you are and that you make a difference." I wanted to know the reason for that.

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have loads of friends. He showed off a lot, always talking about how many friends he had at school, and how he was so friendly with everyone else.
One day his grandfather said to him, “Mario, I bet you a big bag of popcorn that you don’t have as many friends as you think. I’m sure many of them are nothing more than companions, acquaintances, or partners in crime.”
Mario accepted the bet without hesitation. However, he wasn’t sure how he could test whether or not his schoolmates were real friends, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, “I have just exactly what you need. It’s in the attic. Wait here a minute.”
Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It’s a very special chair. It’s rather tricky to sit on because it’s invisible, but if you take it to your school and you manage to sit on it, you’ll activate its magic and you’ll be able to tell who your real friends are.”
Mario, brave and determined, took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. “Don’t move. You’re about to see something amazing.”
And Mario attempted to sit on the chair. Having difficulty seeing it, he missed and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. “Wait, wait, just a slight technical problem,” he said, making another attempt. But again he missed the seat, causing more surprised looks, and a few catcalls. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground… until, suddenly, he tried again and didn’t fall. This time he sat, staying in mid-air—some friends were standing behind him.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself: Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must really be nerd.
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tipping him so be landed in the dir. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, he said, “thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him.
Over next four years, Kyle and I became the best friends. When we were seniors, be had the highest marks in the class and was chose to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a lot, and I was so glad it wasn’t me having to get up there and speak.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle and said. “Hey big guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with one of those looks, the really grateful one, and said “Thanks,” smiling.
As be started his speech, he cleared his throat and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story.

Nick was new, so he didn’t have many friends. One day when he sat by himself at lunch, the headmaster walked in and announced that it was the basketball season, so they needed to practice after school till 6. Nick smiled. He loved playing basketball.
Later that day it was time to go to the first practice of the season. There were other guys and they all sat together talking, but Nick just sat there and waited. “Alright boys! Line up and tell me your names,” the coach demanded. “Ricky, Derick, Josh, Dan, Nick.” they answered, one after another. Practice went on and the coach began to try out the boys. Ricky and his friends did really good. But the coach ran out of time before he could try out Nick.
The next day, Ricky and his friends came up to Nick and told him he wasn’t good enough though they had never seen him play. Nick said nothing. Soon enough it was time for Nick to try out. “We will start with free throws,” the coach said. Nick stood on the free throw line and then shot. He didn’t miss one shot. The boys were amazed. Ricky was mad because they were all giving the attention to Nick. The coach informed Nick that he made the team. All the boys were congratulating him.
Nick was happy that he was on the team and it was a good way to make friends. Ricky just stood there and looked at him in anger. Ricky always got the attention but now Nick did because he’s an amazing player. The next day came and Nick went to lunch. He sat by himself and the next thing he knew was that the table he was sitting at was filled with all the basketball players except Ricky.
Soon enough it was time for their first game. The game was a close one ... There were 5 seconds left and Ricky had the ball. Everyone was blocked but Nick was open. “I'm open. I’m open,” Nick said over and over.

It was on September 5th, my birthday, that we left Cambridge and moved away. We went to the seaside,to our holiday house, which was now to be our permanent home.
I remember the day was cold and grey, in falling slowly but constantly. My father drove in silence. No one spoke and all we could hear was the sound of the tyres on the wet road When we got to the small house near the sea,my mother quietly started to unpack the few things we had brought with us. Carol,Julie and I went down to the beach. We said we were going to look for crabs in the rockpools but actually,we just wanted to get away from our father and his cold silence.
We climbed along the rocks by the side of the beach. Julie and Carol became interested in some shells they found in one of the pools. I wandered away, lost in my private thoughts. It was my birthday, but no one had said “Happy Birthday” to me. I had not received any cards or presents.
I walked down to the seashore, where the waves were breaking lazily against the muddy sand. Suddenly, I saw something green sticking out of the water. I looked at it more carefully. The green thing moved closer and closer to the shore, and when it was almost near enough for me to touch, I realized what it was.
It was a bottle. I went over and picked it up, all the time looking at it. It seemed old, and had no label on it. Then 1 realized there was something inside. Slowly, I pulled out the wet cork from the top of the bottle. Inside was a piece of paper. With great care, 1 took out the folded paper and opened it.
Written on it were these words:
“To whomsoever finds this bottle, I promise you a new friend. ”

Harry was afraid of the wind, I blew of his hat. I whistled under his door. It made the iron fence murmur scary music.
“How can anyone be afraid of the wind?” asked Harry's friend Antony many times. Harry shrugged. Antony always comforted him and encouraged him. Sometimes that made Harry feel better. But not for long.
On windy days Harry sod at his window and watched Antony riding his bike, whose hair flew in the wind. He watched his friend playing cheerfully in the wind, wishing he weren't afraid.
One day Antony came to Harry's house to play. “Look at my glider(滑翔机),” said Antony. “It does tricks and loop-de-loops when I fly it outside in the wind.” “Nice,” said Harry.
When clouds rolled in, the tree in front of Harry's house swung. A garbage can top clattered(发出撞击声) down the street. Antony couldn't wait to fly the glider outside and invited Harry to play together, but he refused.
Harry staved inside and played with his construction set. He pictured launching the glider with Antony. But when he imagined the wind blowing against his face and blowing off his hat, he shivered.
Harry drew pictures of Antony's glider lifting with the wind. Gradually, hearing the happy laughter and shouts of more children outside, he felt sad to be in his room while everyone else was there.
Harry began to make a kite. He took two sticks from his craft bin and crossed them. He tied them together and made a diamond shape with four more sticks. He glued the colored paper onto the sticks and attached a ball of string to make a rudder(方向舵). He held the kite up high, his twinkling eyes staring at it.

“Attention! Everyone! I would like you guys to meet Jose from Mexico. He is a new here, so be nice to him and show him around,” said Mrs Espinoza.
No one talked and the classroom was silent. And then some students stared at Jose and began to whisper to each other. Jose was wearing loose gray pants and a dirty white shirt. His shoes made a short and loud sound when he walked to his desk. Everyone giggled (咯咯地笑) at the sound, but no one talked to him. I wondered how he felt being here and having everyone’s eyes on him and even being laughed at. I wanted to say “Hi” but I was afraid that I might be made fun of for talking to “the new kid”.
In the following days, Jose was lonely and he struggled to fit into the new life. Besides, it was hard for him to learn a new language and make new friends in the new school.
Every day he would sit by himself and eat his lunch quietly, without a word, just focusing on his food. Many of the students would pass by and make unfriendly comments on him. He would just frown (皱眉) and look down at the floor. I wanted to be kind to him but still I couldn’t take the first step.
When I got home, I talked to my sister about Jose. I told her about him being new here and about how the students at school treated him. Then I told her that I wanted to talk to him but I was worried that my friends would make fun of me. She said with a smile, “If they are your true friends, they will stick by you no matter what you do. You know, those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. “The next day, I knew exactly what I was going to do.
Paragraph 1
During the lunch time, I got my lunch and walked towards Jose.
