    I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my cars. I had done it. I had really done it.
    Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in, a play in front of two hundred people. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears-and-proved I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
    If not for my teacher, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
    In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
    My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written." 'll begin to cast everyone tomorrow," she said." I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of the public to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?" A few excited hands shot up—mice, of course, was not one of them—ad Mrs. Sather smiled." We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

    Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. He could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been falling since first grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old, yet, Steve went unnoticed…until Miss White came.
    Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady. For the first time in his young life, Steve couldn't take his eyes off his teacher, yet, still he failed.
    In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone camping there, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see whether he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared. Strangely, Steve never missed a day of school.
    One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
    "Steve!" Startled, he turned to look at her.
    "Pay attention!" She began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
    "You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face.
    "…The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"
    She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
    After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
    "Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.
    "You're smart enough! You'll see a change!" Nothing fazed him.
    "Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing.
    "Steve! Please! I care about you!"
    Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Someone, so beautiful and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM?!

    At the dinner table, Adibe and Senzo were excitedly talking about today’s game, while eating the chicken that Mavis had fried. They talked about how Mavis scored in the first half with a power shot from the halfway line. It was a great goal as their team was losing 1-0 at that time.
    Dad came home then and brought the boys a local newspaper, in which there was news about football scouts from England visiting Ghana. These scouts had asked to be allowed to visit various schools to look for players of the future. Adibe and Senzo looked at each other and cheered, “Wow, I’m going to be like Essien!” And they started arguing which one would make it as a superstar.
    Mavis knew that her parents would never allow her to play football. But she decided to secretly take this chance. She began to think about what she could do.

    Riley retied her skate laces and bent next to Craig. “Get on my back,” she said, and Craig did. Riley started skating, but Craig didn’t feel like he was flying. It just felt like a skating piggyback ride.
    “You are too heavy,” Riley said, “I can’t go fast when I am carrying you.” She skated slowly back to the bench. Craig got off her back. “Even if you could go fast, I wouldn’t be flying.” he said sadly. “I need skates to fly.”
    Riley didn’t say anything on the walk home, but a few days later she asked Craig if he wanted to go skating.
    “To watch?” he asked. “No, to skate,” she said cheerfully. “Mom and I found a pair of my old skates. They might fit you.” The skates were a little big, but when Riley stuffed newspaper in the toes, they fit. Craig couldn’t stop smiling. He didn’t want to take them off, but he had to so he could walk to the lake. Riley and Liz went with him. They carried their hockey sticks and a wooden chair. Hardly had they got to the lake when Craig put his skates back on and Riley helped him onto the ice.

In the evening, my mother came to me and said that she was leaving for her friend's house and if I wanted to come along as well. I knew she was trying to fool me and she only wanted me to get dressed for the party. I replied to her in affirmative(肯定的) and started dressing up. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START.” Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
    Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

    She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Who could it be from?’ With trembling hands, I tore open the envelope and drew out a sparkly image of a queen seated on her throne(御座). The heading read, ‘To a Queen of a Valentine.’”
    I give the class a mean a meaningful look. “Slowly, I turned the card over, and at the bottom I saw the signature and almost fainted: David. It was all too perfect to be real. Then my eyes traveled up to the writing above his signature. In large, uneven letters, he had written me a special message.”
    My students lean in, waiting. You could hear a pin drop. “It read, ‘To the Ugliest Girl in Our Class.” There are audible gasps. Mouths drop open. Some look down at their desks, seemingly embarrassed for me.
    “Well, it ruined Valentine’s Day for me. It shook what little faith I had in myself for a long time after. But I survived. And now I refuse to give this holiday of love to the meanness of one terrible boy, it’s given me the motivation to celebrate kindness instead of cruelty.” I smile.

    So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happens to your homemade lunch?” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don't believe you, Katie.” She didn't care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

    Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
    “I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first- not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

    That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe said, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could did. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
    After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands.     So then we thought of my activities and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet(储物间)along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl, the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn’t like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
    Carl lived in a group of foster home(集体寄养之家).He, was loud and somewhat of a thief, and he would take almost anything that wasn't fastened down, so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I concluded that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

    I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
    Most of the time we gossiped(传播流言蜚语)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

    We started right then and made a plan to meet each day for two weeks, after which Mrs. Sharpnack would give me a test to check my progress. After Mrs. Sharpnack helped me go over a few problems that day, it was time for my bus to come. I waved her goodbye. In the following days, I continued staying with Mrs. Sharpnack after class. She went over each problem, carefully explaining the solutions.
    Sometimes I still couldn’t understand what she had said. She stayed calm, though, and would think of a different way to explain the answer. The day to take the test came quickly.

    “Let me carry the flowers for you,” Jenny smiled and said, “You are so kind and patient with your mother.” I replied, “Thank you. Mom is experiencing great pain because of her cancer. What I am doing is make her happy and forget her pain.” Suddenly, Jenny froze in her tracks.
    She said, “My mom has cancer, too. May I please add your Mom's name to hers? I'd be proud to pray for both of them—overcoming the difficulties and achieving a victory as soon as possible.”
