Three Fingers of Patience
Once there was a farmer with his wife and children living a happy life by earning from their own land in a village. The family planted in spring, and harvested the crops in autumn. They set aside enough for the whole year, and sold the extra in the market. With the money, the family could buy necessities and prepare seeds and fertilizer(肥料)for the next year. Look, the farmer was making his land ready for his next session of farming. The only issue faced by him was an in sufficient amount of water for the fields. After discussing with his family, the farmer came to a conclusion to dig a well nearby his land. This idea could not only solve the present problem of lacking water, but also improve the watering system once and for all.
After managing to get all the materials prepared, he went to visit an expert to ask for advice about where he should dig one. Under the guidance, he started the project at the edge of the land with great expectation. He worked very hard to dig day and night. Several days passed, and there was no water coming out, but he had confidence and further dug the well even without his lunch or dinner. Three days later, he became discouraged as nothing changed though he dug deeper and deeper. His hard work was not rewarded. The whole family boosted his confidence and advised him not to lose hope. He didn’t want to disappoint anyone, especially himself, and began his project again. Another two days went by, and there was not a single drop of water coming from the well. He was completely tired, lost patience and went home thinking that everything was a waste of time. Although his family still believed they were able to find water there, the result made them accept the failure. In case passers-by fell into the hole by mistake, they put a piece of wood which was the size of five fingers long near the unfinished well. Since then, the family didn’t talk about the well any more.

My husband and I got to experience a total stranger's kindness and generosity first-hand during a 10-day trip across the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert.
On our second-to-last day in Morocco, we happily took a trip to Essaouira, an old and beautiful seaside town on the Atlantic. During the journey there, we stopped at an Argan co-operative(合作社), where we got to taste some Argan oil and honey. After that, we headed where we stayed. We arrived at our small guesthouse in Essaouira at around dinnertime, and on our way to a local restaurants my husband started to feel unwell. He went back to our guesthouse while I had dinner with some friends.
When I got back to our guesthouse after dinner, I found my husband sitting on the bathroom floor, looking very pale. He had been sick about six times in an hour. He spent the rest of the night in the bathroom, getting very familiar with the house's pipe. Our main suspect was the Argan honey—it probably didn't agree with him.
At about 6 a. m., my husband finally managed to leave the bathroom and crawl into bed. He was very weak and dehydrated(脱水的),so I went down to the reception to buy a bottle of water. When I got to the lobby(门厅),I found a young man behind the desk, who didn't look older than 18, and explained to him that my husband was sick and I needed to buy some bottled water for him.
Our house was very small and basic and didn't have a restaurant or cafe. The young man informed me that they didn't sell any drinks at the house, so I asked him where the nearest shop was.
I looked out the window and my heart started to race. I didn't fancy risking going into the unfamiliar streets of the Medina in the dark, all by myself. In fact, I was afraid of it.

There was a rich couple who was holding a big new year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was expensive, but they didn’t mind paying a lot for it. After buying everything they needed, they called a porter(搬运工) to carry it and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for sending their goods at their home. The old porter quoted(报价) $20, a price well below the market rate. Yet, the couple argued and bargained(讨价还价) with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was trying to make money for every meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their home address. They reached their home and two hours passed, the porter still hadn’t delivered their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we bought for our big party. I am sure he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire(询问) and then to the police station to file the complaint against him(报案).”
They both went to the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their stuff(东西) in his cart!
Paragraph 1:
The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our stuff.”

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week, little by little, her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn't a good student; I talked too much; I was too proud; I didn't like to help others; I didn't finish my homework; I didn't care for anyone and so on. I tried to hear all these as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. And I was too upset and didn't know what to do next. I felt I was the worst girl in the world. Life was hard for me at that time. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes for help.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. That is a good thing. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said. That is OK.”
Then I did as my father told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half of the things she said to me were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number of the things I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself. I never feel upset now.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to look at it. I felt very surprised.
Paragraph 1:
“That's just for you,” he said.

Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments.

As a senior teacher in primary school, I deal with countless lovely children to help them learn and live, especially to help children deal with their parents. My experience over the years tells me not to be impatient in case of trouble. Think twice before you act. We must firmly believe that children have a kind heart.
The following is a real big story that happened in my class not long ago.
Katie was in trouble. She was such a sweet kid. A third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with students like Katie. She was never ever a discipline problem. I just couldn't imagine why she had made her parents so angry. Her parents complained to me anxiously and urgently asked me to tell the truth and give her a lesson.
It seemed that Katie had been spending a lot of money in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great home-made lunch every day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation. I comforted them and thought about how to get in touch with Katie.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you spending much money on lunch, Katie? What happened to your home-made lunch?” I asked. “I lost it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don't believe you, Katie.” She didn't care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track, “No. I just lost it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.
The problem was still unsolved the next week when I noticed a boy who was new to the school sitting alone at a lunch table. He always looked sad. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table.

Maybe we all live in each other’ spaces. Perhaps this is what the photo I took during a summer holiday is for if you treat others with patience and tolerance, then you’ll likely be repaid in another space.
Fifteen years ago, I took a trip in Lecce in southern Italy that summer. Lecce is an important stage for art and culture lovers. Walking in the city center is a dive into the past, between churches and antique buildings that keep precious details and decorations. More importantly, it’s an ideal place for photographers.
One morning, I got up early enough for a panoramic view of the sunrise, the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees. After climbing up a hill, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.
Unluckily, I was about to take out my camera when suddenly a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, I thought, this woman was here to stop for a short rest, and enjoy the scenery. Beyond my expectation, she stood still as if something caught her eye, not noticing anyone else’s presence around her.
Patient as I was, after about 10 minutes, with my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I got bored. Was it too much to ask her to move aside so that I could take just one picture of the landscape? Of course, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation that I didn’t have the heart to mess with that.
Another 10 minutes passed. However, the woman was still there. I grew frustrated. I decided to take the photo anyway. With an unwilling touch of the shutter, I left in low spirits.

Probably, most of you had the feeling before, at least once—you had been waiting for a long time, yet being afraid of getting. It was exactly my state of mind before the first day at college. I had been working hard to pass the necessary tests and have my application to the undergraduate programme in management approved. And when the time had come for me to visit the college for the first day of the study,I couldn't sleep all night because of being anxious about how to look good physically in front of the whole new world I was about to enter. However, the positive attitude and readiness to accept support from others helped a lot in a new environment.
It was Monday morning. Being too excited to sleep the night before, I came to the college half an hour earlier for the first lecture and was walking nervously through the hallway. About 15 minutes after I came, the hallway started to be full of students. Professors who walked on their business probably didn't pay attention to me. I knew which hall to go to and had already checked that it was open. However,I was hesitant to enter the hall and sit there alone. People were moving around me as if they hadn't seen me. I felt disappointed with the fact that I had nobody to talk to in the new and seemingly unfriendly place.
Suddenly,a well-dressed man who seemed to be in his late twenties approached me. He introduced himself as Mathews and asked whether I was lost and whether he could help me with anything. In that situation,I realized it was very kind of him and that he was exactly the person I wanted to ask in my thoughts a minute before, but then I was too nervous for a friendly chat. As a result, instead of welcoming the opportunity to make the first acquaintance (相识), I told the man to mind his business and leave me alone since I was an adult capable of finding my class without anybody's assistance.

The Summer I Learned to Really See
It was a muggy(闷热)end-of-summer dog day in Missouri. I was preparing to go after the mail—about a mile's distance, through fields and forests, across a river, from our farmhouse, in which three generations of my family lived.
“Take the bucket with you,” my grandmother said, handing me the very familiar bucket.
“What for?” I asked, petulantly(使小性子). The berries had been picked, and it was too early for wild grapes, too late for roasting ears(穗).
“You'll find something to fill it with,” she said, her blue eyes sparkling with anticipation.
I didn't want to take the bucket. It would be a burden to me. Twice a day I'd carried a bucket for milking. With it I'd carried feed to the chickens, salt to the cows, sugar to the neighbors. I'd had enough with carrying with the bucket!
Nevertheless, I took the bucket. Halfway to the mailbox, I set it down beneath a pokeberry bush(胡桃树). I needn't carry it the whole way, I reasoned. There was no mail. When I got back to the bucket, I saw that a few ripe pokeberries had fallen into it. With childish ill humor, I picked off enough clusters(花串) to fill the bucket, even though I thought they were good for nothing.
“Aren't they just lovely!” Grandma exclaimed admiringly when I set them on the kitchen table. She squeezed out the juice of the berries and we used the lovely red ink to paint rings on our fingers and pen letters to distant cousins.
When I went to mail the letters the next day, Grandma again told me to take the bucket along. This time I carried the bucket a little farther than the previous day before setting it down. There was only a sale catalogue in the mail. When I got back to the bucket, I dropped it in. But I felt vaguely uncomfortable, remembering the pokeberries. I caught sight of a bunch of peppermint(薄荷) growing close to the path. Funny, I had passed it every day and never noticed it before. Peppermint just doesn't spring up overnight. I picked a bucketful, its fragrance seeming to cool the day. Grandma was pleased with the peppermint. She liked to chew it and make tea with it.

I was in Walt Disney World with my son, Daniel, who is autistic (患自闭症的), and at that time he was 7 years old. My wife and our three other sons were with us too. He was having one of his melt down screaming tantrums (发怒), only God knows why. So my wife and I decided I would take the bus back to the hotel, and she would stay in the park with the other three children.
After we got on the bus, the screaming continued. My son looks “normal”. To the many people on the bus, he appeared to just be a kid screaming --- or a spoiled child who did not get his special toy that day. It did not take long --- less than a minute --- before the screaming brought about stares, then glares from the other passengers.

My granddaughter Elizabeth lives in Washington state. When she was a rather naive 12 year old,she had spent the summer visiting her father near Atlanta,Georgia. Elizabeth's school was to start in about three weeks,so it was decided that she could stop and visit with us in Texas before returning to Washington just in time to start school.
Our visit would be rather short, but Elizabeth is such a joy that we enjoy every moment that we can share with her.
I can't imagine what the travel agent in Georgia was thinking when she scheduled 12-year-old Lizzy's flights. First, she was to fly from Atlanta to Houston William Hobby Airport, arriving about 9:00 p.m. Then she was to depart for San Antonio about 11:00 p.m. from Houston's George H.W. Bush Inter. Continental Airport. However,Bush is some 25 miles across town from Houston Hobby Airport, and there was no ground transportation available between the two.
The lady who sat next to Liz on the plane learned of the situation and, sensing Liz's worry, gave her a phone card and $10. 00. When Elizabeth called us and explained her situation,we advised her to contact a police officer there at the terminal.
She did. He put her in touch with Ms Joy Fears,a Continental gate agent. Initially,Ms Fears was going to put Elizabeth in a taxi to make the cross-town trip. Liz had $20. 00 or so that her dad had given her upon leaving Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, plus the $10. 00 that her seatmate had given her—enough for the taxi fare to Bush Airport. However,no doubt considering Liz's age and the late hour,Ms Fears decided to show her kindness by taking an enjoyable“do it yourself”approach.
First Ms Fears got a meal voucher(代金券) and got Lizzy fed. Then she proceeded to round up Liz's baggage, then put both the luggage and our granddaughter in her private vehicle. She went so far as to personally deliver Liz to the Continental gate at Bush, and saw to it that she was properly checked in and on her way for the 55 minute flight from Houston to San Antonio.

At noon on a brilliant Tuesday in March, my 12-year-old son Kai and I are a mile and a half into a four-day, 27-mile walk through the Grand Canyon—his first backpacking trip — when he asks: “Are we almost to camp?”
Um, no. Camp, at Hermit Creek, is seven miles and nearly 2,500 feet below, which will take us several more hours. We’re going down a poorly maintained path off the canyon, across which we can see many of the canyon’s layers. This is on display in cliffs hundreds of feet tall, a reminder of how far we have to go.
We are here largely because of a birthday note Kai wrote me two years ago in which he declared, “You used to be a wild 10-year-old like me and now you’re a wild 53-year-old. We can do so many things together! I am excited for when I’m old enough for the Grand Canyon!”
There are, I suppose, dads who could resist that, just as there are fathers who would plan an experience-appropriate trip for their sons. I am neither, so here we are. Never mind that; aside from simply being 12, Kai has done almost nothing to physically prepare for this. Or that I haven’t backpacked for 13 years.
We head on past twisty trees and brush. Soon the view broadens, and the layers grow deeper, down to the shadowy, 1.8 billion-year-old Vishnu, a panorama(全景) that leaves Kai excited. “This place is amazing,” he says.
Nightfall in the canyon can be magical. Darkness surrounds us, pressed by cool air. We navigate a narrow path to the stream and, hearing the sound of a waterfall, lie down to take in the stars. Twice I suggest we turn in. “Not yet,” Kai says. “This is too unbelievable.”

When I was eleven years old, I had a big accident. I get scared even now when I think about that time. I went skating near my house. There were many people, and I saw some of them falling on the ice.
It was my first time to go ice skating, so I was nervous. I was wondering how to skate.
I went with a friend who was very skillful. He spent some time teaching me how to skate, but I didn't learn much. He left me and skated all around. As soon as he left, I fell down. I envied the other people because they could skate well.
I was bored because I kept falling so I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold and my hands were frozen.
Suddenly, I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it? It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped there, I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die, but I did my best to grab something to get out from under the ice. I tried to grab the edge of the ice, but it was very difficult for an eleven-year' old child.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up. So, I lived and I'm still alive today.
I thanked him. At that time, my friend came back. I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of me, but he didn't. He was embarrassed. When I took a taxi home, the taxi driver was surprised and asked what had happened. I didn't want to say anything because I was tired and scared. Even now, whenever I think about that time, I feel uncomfortable. I don't want to go skating again even now.

My parents love the saying “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" so much that they even bought a pillow with those words on it. But I was recently in a situation where I was SO ready to give up.
It started last week when my friend Ollie and I were helping his grandmother Mary to carry boxes from her garage to her car for the homeless shelter rummage sale (义卖).
At the sight of a big old trunk (行李箱),we asked Mary what was inside. But she told us that as she had lost the key, she had to find a master locksmith to figure it out. "Let me have a try!" said Ollie. “I bet I can open that lock in two minutes flat! Maybe there's a treasure inside, like gold or diamonds or an ancient map!"
Mary smiled. "I'll tell you what. If you two treasure hunters can open this trunk, you can have it, along with whatever is inside."
Ollie got a tool kit and we set out to open the lock. But he definitely lost that bet. Those two minutes turned into two hours, with no luck at all. We had tried every tool in the kit, but the lock wouldn't move slightly.
“It's no use." Ollie sighed. "I guess we have to give up."
“But we can't give up!" I said. "What about 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again"?"
Ollie shook his head. "Unless you know a magical key fairy, we're never getting this unlocked."
Just then, my little brother Tex showed up. He showed great interest in the trunk. "It looks like an upside-down boat! Can I turn it over and pretend I'm sailing in the ocean?"
"Sure," Ollie replied. "It's no good for anything else."
“Ahoy!" Tex said, climbing on top after Ollie and I turned it over. “I’m the captain!” He giggled as he jumped up and down. And right then, a screw (螺丝) from a hinge (铰链) came loose and rolled to the floor.

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and confidently knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car for him. Finally, the day came as he had wished. On the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man’s name embossed in gold. Finding that was not what he had anticipated, he angrily raised his voice to his father and said, “With all your money you just give me a Bible?” He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, enjoying everything he earned. However, realizing his father was very old and concerned about his healthy conditions, the young man thought it was time for him to see his elderly father. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.
The moment he arrived at his father’s house, a surge of sadness and regret welled up in his heart. He began to thoroughly search through his father’s important papers and belongings and spotted the still new Bible although carpeted with dust, just as he had left it years ago.
