My sister and I boarded a small plane together with 40 other passengers. Unluckily, while flying over the mountains, the plane met with violent airflow. Losing control suddenly, it hit an unknown mountain top. The crash killed a few passengers immediately, leaving many injured including my sister. In order to add a slight chance of being found, we waited in the open, as opposed to waiting in the plane, even though it was freezing cold. At night, we slept side by side to keep ourselves warm. We melted snow into water to drink. We knew our food could not last us long, sticking to the hope that we would be rescued soon.
We knew from the radio that the outside world was trying to look for the missing aircraft. However, the aircraft was white and blended (混合) in with the snow, making it impossible to be seen for helicopters from the sky. Later, our hope was dead when we found out through our radio that the rescue effort ended. Most of us were very depressed though it was no use.
Now climbing over the mountains, ourselves to search for help seemed to be our only chance of survival. Although the crash site was an awful place, with urine (尿) everywhere and smelling of death, I still wished to stay there. But my sister would give in to her injuries soon if we were not rescued. Thus, together with two other people, Canossa and Vaginitis decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. Carrying some food and water, we started our journey.
The mountain we were to challenge was one with slopes so steep (陡峭) that it would scare away a team of expert climbers.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Standing on the top, disappointed and regretful, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a village at the bottom of the mountain.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】Paragraph 1
The mountain we were to challenge was one with slopes so steep (陡峭) that it would scare away a team of expert climbers. We met with various difficulties including cold weather and dangerous mountain roads. Besides, food and water became less and less. Hungry and tired, what’s worse, two of us were injured on the way, which made our climbing more difficult and last longer time. We endured exhaustion and starvation but at last we reached the top of the mountain. To our horror, we found nothing.
    Paragraph 2
Standing on the top, disappointed and regretful, we were about to give up hope when I spotted a village at the bottom of the mountain. Again we started making our way down the mountain. Eventually, at the base of the mountain we were helped by a local farmer who called the police for help. After the rescue team arrived, I then guided them via a helicopter to the crash site. Through the efforts of all the people, we were rescued. Finally, the world found out that there were 16 survivors who had gone through the mess and odds and had endured the cruel days.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏团,马戏表演). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man dropped his head, and his lips began to shake. The ticket lady again quoted the price. It was obvious that the man didn’t have enough money.
How would he turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.

This really means a lot to me and my family.” Tears of gratitude ran down his cheeks. “Forget it, and just enjoy the circus. ” Father said with a big smile on his face. David is a good middle school teacher. When I first met him, I asked him what encouraged him to teach. David smiled. And he told me a story.
When he was young, like many young boys, David was fond of throwing stones. One afternoon, he discovered, that if he threw stones over his neighbor’s fence, he could create a crashing sound — the sound of breaking glass. So he would throw a stone and wait for the sound. David felt fun at that moment, but then he did get caught.
The man who lived next door came to his house and told his parents about the boy and the stones. “I would like David to come to my home so I can show him a few things,” the man said. His parents, sorry for that and disappointed by their son’s behavior, sent their son to the neighbor’s house. David followed the man into his house, through the back door, and out into the yard. There, next to the fence, was a greenhouse. The neighbor led David into the greenhouse, and David imagined all kinds of punishments. What was the man going to do with him?
As he led David down the rows of plants, the man began talking about flowers. He walked slowly, showing him each one and explaining what he loved about them. He said, “There are my gladioli (剑兰); they can get quite large and bloom (开花) in many colors. There are violets; they are my wife’s favorite. When I see them, I remember her, and miss her. In the deep purple, she lives in my eyes. And these orchids, right here, are very difficult to grow. But when they bloom, they create the most beautiful shape. You cannot believe until you see with your own eyes how a flower can be so beautiful.”
    Para1:
    David was surprised.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As he walked home, David decided he would grow up to be a teacher.

    【答案】Para 1:
David was surprised. There was no lecture, no beating, and no punishment. For about one hour, David was shown everything the man loved, including his flowers, and the greenhouse where he grew plants. Then, he took David’s hand, and shook it. He thanked David for coming, and told him he was welcome to come back any time he wanted. And then, he let David go home.
    Para 2:
As he walked home, David decided he would grow up to be a teacher. That’s all because of a walk through some broken glass, a room full of flowers, and a few stories. The man had done a very small thing and he just showed David what he loved. He could have shouted at David. But instead he took a few thoughtful minutes to share the fragrances (香味) and colors that meant so much to him. In a single hour, David realized his wrong doings. Encouraged by the man, David wanted to be a teacher to help other kids like him.

The last race of the day was over. My breathing gradually stilled along with the ripples in the pool, but I stayed in the water, watching sadly as the winners gathered for the medals ceremony.
“Don't look so sad,” I heard a voice say behind me. I turned around to see a tall, blond, blue-eyed man standing on the edge of the pool. “You came in fourth, but you are the best in your country.” he said smiling. “I'm Ken Schafer, and you?”
    “Rima Datta.”
“And how old are you, Rima?”
“Fourteen, Sir” I replied lifting myself out of the water. Ken was a swimming coach from California and asked me about my life as a swimmer until then.
My eldest brother, Anil, had taught me how to swim, but I had no real training until I was nine when a coach from the National Institute of Sports came for just three months a year to train the boys at Mayo College, where our father taught. She set aside a couple of hours a week for the daughters of the staff. It was she who had corrected my mistakes and encouraged me to take part in competitions.
Surprised to hear how little steady training I had had, Ken introduced me to the National Institute of Sports in Patiala to be trained in this summer. The train was hard, and I felt quite lonely away from my parents and all that was familiar. But it was Ken, with his tireless enthusiasm, his passion for swimming, and his faith in me that kept me focused.
I won my first gold medal at the national championship that year, a fact that filled me with immense joy and Ken with a sense of satisfaction that his work with me was paying off. Yet he realized that what I really needed was a team to train with and steady coaching year-round.
Then he persuaded my parents to allow me to go to California and train there for a year. He even helped find out a host family for me.

Alone on the long flight to Los Angeles, I was filled with doubts, as I had never lived with a strange family. How would I manage to live with people I had never met before? What if the host family I didn't get along? Would I fit in? I needn't have worried. From the first moment at the airport where they had come to receive me, I knew things would be all right. Their smiles and their words of welcome as they greeted me felt like a warm embrace. I could not have found a kinder, more generous family than theirs.
    Para 2:
The kindness of the host family and Ken gave me all the practical and emotional support I needed to train in a swimming club of California. During my stay there, it was the mother of my host family who drove me to and from the training center every day. She could cook delicious food and she knew how to comfort me while I was homesick. The training was hard, yet it was Ken who always showed me concern and encouraged me to keep going. My swimming performance improved slowly but steadily. From those kind people I have learned generosity, love, and kindness.

Mr Brown lived in a house less than two miles away from his office. He was therefore able to drive home every day for lunch. Every time he drove in the middle of the day, he found cars were parked in the road outside his house, and there was no room for his own car. He had to drive two blocks farther before he could find a place to park. Then he had to walk home. This made him very angry.
He had put up a board which read “No Parking in the garden facing the road, but nobody seemed to pay attention to it, People only obeyed a police notice, but not a private one. There were no parked cars where there was a blue board with white letters on it: Police Notice——No Parking.
Mrs. Brown suggested that he should steal a police notice. But he dared not, being afraid of going to prison. She then suggested that he make one just like a police notice. He said he was not a policeman and couldn't use the word “police”. He decided that he must find a way out and started thinking hard. For several days, the smell of paint filled the house. One night he showed his wife a new notice board. It was painted in white letters on a blue board: Polite Notice-No Parking!
“Oh,” Mrs. Brown said, “but you told me you weren't going to use the word‘ police’. That's exactly like a police notice.”

    【答案】Paragraph 1:
Why did Mrs. Brown say her husband was really rather clever? Because she found that he had written a notice which looked exactly like a police notice. He made a blue board with white letters on it, but it was not a real police notice. Being afraid of going to prison, Mr. Brown certainly dared not use the word “police”, but he used “polite notice” instead of “police notice”. He was quite clever, wasn't he?
    Paragraph 2:
If the police discovered that the Browns were using a police notice, they would feel angry and punish them. It was a crime because he offended the police, passing himself off as a policeman, but Mr. Brown would remained very calm. He would ask the policeman to look at the board carefully. The policeman would burst out laughing when they realized what had happened.

    10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber, tailor, coffee shop owner, grocer, and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.
Mr. Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children — twelve to be exact. My mother was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged clothes and looked malnourished (营养不良的). My family was relatively better off in the village. My parents would bring over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.
I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with two meals a day. We stopped the practice of giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family despite the protests (抗议) from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell (困难时期) did not last long, and the children in our family resumed our three meals a day again.
As time went on, the number of customers at Lim's shop had increased rapidly. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. They were much better off than before.
It was at this time that my father's health was worsening. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. Because of lack of attention to his provision shop (食品店), the business became worse. My father then sold our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.

With the help of Mr. Lim, the situation in my family took a turn for the better.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】One possible version:
They say that one good deed deserves another. Mr. Lim, our neighbor, came to learn of our plight and stepped in to help. He stated simply that it was his turn to repay the kindness that my parents had shown to him in the past. Through his connections, Mr. Lim arranged for my father to consult a famous doctor. Not only was this doctor's diagnosis of my father's medical condition accurate, but he was also able to cure my father. Besides, he arranged for a loan for my father's business. He also told my brothers and I that we should not give up our education. He then arranged to finance our education as long as we needed it.
With the help of Mr. Lim, the situation in my family took a turn for the better. My father recovered from his illness gradually and his business recovered the next year. My father is now the proud owner of the village mini-market. Mr. Lim has expanded his business, too. My brothers and I are among the top students in the school. Whenever my parents met up with Mr. Lim, they would thank him for his past help. He would just shrug off their thanks and say simply that he was merely repaying a kindness. The children in both families have brotherly friendship now. The story between the Lim family and my family has proved a saying that kindness begets kindness.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem—inability (没能力)to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I pulled a few books off the shelf and sat down on the floor. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was the one I could share secrets with, but later he was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my dog.
On the book’s cover, there was a dog which looked the same as mine. I figured the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the little, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty and got the main ides of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It was until then that I realized I had begun to overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed myself in the real scene.

I was so excited to take a vacation in Florida for the first time. My sister had invited my daughters and me to go with her family and she even lent me her new, expensive bathing suit (泳衣). It was so comfortable.
The first morning we were there, I put on that bathing suit and we headed to the beach. We played in the water, enjoying the views and sounds of the ocean: the waves, the wind, fish, white sand, seashells, and whatever else drew our attention. I was excited by it all while I was swimming in the cool ocean water.
Suddenly, I felt a deep pain (疼痛) in my right arm. My sister saw my face and rushed to my side. I lifted my arm to find huge blisters (水泡) that circled the entire length of my arm. I had been bitten by a jellyfish (水母).
My sister said, “We have to head back to our room now. I will put some ointment (药膏) on the blisters so that we don't have to rush to the hospital.”
I didn't want to frighten anyone, so I came out of the water quietly with my arm hanging at my side. We had forgotten our towels that morning in a hurry to get to the ocean, so I shook as we walked in silence.
I began to notice people looking at me and pointing me out. It seemed as if the entire beach was laughing at me.
Then I looked down and saw why. That beautiful, expensive bathing suit was completely transparent (透明的) now that it was wet. I became the center of the beach. However, I had no towel for the long travel back to the room!

【答案】To get back to the room, I had to walk past a swimming pool. Like everyone else, those in and around the swimming pool all looked at me with a very strange expression. All I could do was keep my head down. Finally, I made it to the room, where my sister lovingly took care of my blisters. When she saw I was going to be okay, she couldn't help laughing. She said that she had never worn the suit before and didn't know it would be transparent when wet.
Well, good and bad news came in. The good news was that I didn't have to go to the hospital. The blisters disappeared in the afternoon. I no longer felt any pain. The bad news was that I had to walk past all those people again later that day to get back to the beach. I'm sure those beach lovers would never forget the day.

When I was a very young man, I was invited to dine at the home of a celebrity. After dinner, we were led to an enormous drawing room, and my eyes witnessed two sights: servants arranging chairs, and musical instruments up front.
Apparently I was “in for” an evening of music.I use the phrase “in for” because music meant nothing to me.I am almost tone deaf - only with great effort can I figure out the simplest tune, and serious music was no more than an arrangement of noises. So when the music started, I tried to pretend an expression of intelligent appreciation, closing my ears from the inside with completely irrelevant thoughts.
After a while, people around me were applauding, and so did I.But at once I heard a gentle voice on my right: “You are fond of Bach (巴赫)?” I knew nothing about Bach, but I did know one of the most famous faces in the world - I was sitting next to Albert Einstein.
“Well,” I thought it was a casual question. But I could see from his serious look that it was not merely out of politeness.“I don't know anything about Bach,” I said awkwardly.“I've never heard any of his music.”
“You have never heard Bach?” He made it sound as if I were stupid.
“It isn't that I don't want to like Bach,” I replied.“It's just that I'm tone deaf, or almost tone deaf, and I've never really figured out the tune.”
A look of concern came into the old man's face.“Please,” he said suddenly.“You will come with me?” As he led me across that crowded room,I kept my embarrassed glance at the carpet. He led me upstairs and drew me in a room with a piano.“Now,” he said with a smile.“How long you have felt this way about music?” “All my life,” I said, feeling awful.“I wish you would go back downstairs and listen, Dr.Einstein.It doesn't really matter.” But Einstein shook his head and continued.

“Tell me, please,” he said.“Any music you do like so that we can start?”
“Since you have mastered the simple, now we can go on to something more complex,” he said.
【答案】 “Tell me, please,” he said “Any music you do like so that we can start?” I replied that I liked the songs where I could follow the tune, with an example he perfectly accepted. He went to the piano, and in a moment, the room was filled with the familiar tune.He then asked me to sing the tune, for which I tried desperately to stay in tune.“You see!” he cried with a delighted face like sunrise.“You do have an ear!” Though concerned about proving nothing with a familiar tune, I was encouraged by Einstein to start with the simple, with more difficult part following later, in case of ruining my enthusiasm for further learning with only a small mistake made.
“Since you have mastered the simpler now we can go on to something more complex,” he said.I did it with a surprising degree of accuracy after this second tune.Einstein stared at me with such an astonishing look as only seen from my father at my graduation ceremony.“Excellent!” Einstein remarked when I finished.“Now this!” Difficult as it was for a freshman, I managed to reproduce approximate sounds.“Now, young man,” he said, putting his arm through mine.“We are ready to return for the rest of the concert!” This time I allowed myself to just listen, and when the concert was finished, I finally added my genuine applause to that of others.

Last summer when my family was road tripping to Montana we arrived in Great Falls late one night. The kids had fallen asleep in the car, so my husband went and checked in while I stayed with the kids. When he returned with the room keys, we woke up our children and took them out of the car, through the hotel, up the elevators and into our guest room. We kept the room dark, leaving only the entry light on, and quickly put the kids into bed hoping they’d drift back to sleep.
My husband went to put our waters in the mini-fridge only to notice some beers. “That’s strange”, he said and I agreed, but having discovered left-behind drinks in hotel fridges in the past, I didn’t think much about it. I figured the housekeepers had forgotten to check it. In the meantime, my husband ran to the store and I went into the bathroom to get ready for bed. As I washed my face, I looked down to see cardboard beer containers in the trash. I felt my heart begin to pound. We were in someone else’s room!
Now panicked, I checked the closet. Nothing. I then went to the dresser drawers. Nothing. My eyes scanned the door room’s floor and there it was: A black bag that looked like one of ours. But it wasn’t!
I immediately called the front desk and the waitress in charge responded with an “Oh, my God! This is not good!”
By now the kids were wide awake, jumping on the beds as I was trying to put all of our things back into our oversized suitcase. Just while we were packing our things, I heard someone was unlocking the door, which made my heart beating wildly.

    【答案】One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
The door opened and in came a young man. Seeing us packing our things into our suitcase, he was shocked and angry, shouting, “Who are you? Get out!”. I tried to explain what had happened. However, he wouldn't listen to me. He talked with me in a loud voice, making my kids frightened. The kids began to cry. Just at that time my husband returned, with some things bought from the store in his hands. Thinking the young man was unfriendly, he tried to talk with him in a polite manner.
    Paragraph 2:
I didn't know how to deal with the matter but luckily the waitress arrived out of breath. Watching the waitress, all of us stopped talking. She explained that her mother became badly ill last night, which contributed to her fault. After explaining the reason to us, the waitress burst into tears. The young man, my husband and I, even my kids, tried to comfort the waitress. We said sorry to each other and we all gave a sign of relief. The special experience in someone else's room made me realize forgiveness is a kind of virtue.

    15.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Wrapping paper flew everywhere as Cali opened her gift. The box had a picture of a pretty girl. She was wearing white ice skates and turning around a frozen pond.
Cali looked up at her aunt and uncle with her big brown eyes. “Figure skates? Wow! How nice of you! But,” the little girl hesitated, “… but I don’t know how to skate.” She looked embarrassed.
“Don’t worry,” said Aunt Lisa. “That’s the fun part — learning how to do it!”
“That’s right,” said Uncle George.“We will take you to the ice rink(冰场)and all go skating together.”
“I don’t know…” said Cali. She wasn’t too sure she was going to be able to do it. Sometimes she had a hard time learning new things. She looked again at the happy girl on the box. It did look like fun. Cali imagined herself moving and turning on the ice like a real figure skater. “Okay,” she agreed. “Let’s do it!”
The next day Cali went to the skating rink with her aunt and uncle. Her eyes twinkled and her face lit up with excitement as she looked at the other skaters around her. She sat down on the bench and slipped her feet into the skates. Holding the strings in her fingers, she could not figure out how to tie them up. “I don’t know how to do it,” she said. She felt sad that this was another thing she couldn’t do.
“Let me show you.” Her aunt bent down on one knee, explaining how to put the strings around the small hooks (钩子). Then she tied them into a tight bow. “Now, you do the other skate yourself. I’ll helpyou if you need it.” Cali bent over the skate and did what her aunt had showed her. Her tongue stuck out of the side of her mouth as she paid attention. After a few tries, she worked out how to cross the strings around the hooks. Her aunt helped make sure the strings were nice and tight. “You did it!” smiled her aunt, patting Cali on the back.

    Paragraph 2:

    【答案】Passage 1.
“Time to hit the ice,”her uncle said. As he helped her walk to the edge of the rink, he said,“We will hold your hands and you stand between us.”Cali took their hands in hers and made her first step onto the smooth ice.She grinned and tried taking a few steps.“Good, Cali. Now try to glide on one foot for just a second longer on each foot as you walk,” suggested her aunt. Then her uncle skated in front of her while her aunt guided her from behind.“Skate to your uncle now,” she said, pushing her on the back a little to get more speed. Cali glided unsteadily towards her uncle, taking small steps and fighting for balance. When she reached her uncle, he encouraged her to try it on her own.Cali wasn’t too sure about that. It seemed like everyone else was zooming past her. She started to get nervous. She lost her balance.
    Passage 2.
Oof! She fell down, hard. It hurt. She closed her eyes and tried not to cry. In a moment, her uncle was helping her back on feet.He smiled into her eyes.“Everyone falls down the first few times. You just have to get back up again.”Cali took a deep breath.“Okay, I can do this.”She skated away from her uncle toward the crowd. As she wobbled, she talked to herself.“Be brave. Keep going. Small steps. Yes!”She had skated almost all the way around the rink by herself! Her aunt caught up to her and took her hand. “Look at you! You are working so hard and doing so well. We’re proud of you,”said Aunt Lisa.
