Life is a series of choices and we can’t always foresee the consequences(后果).
Harry Saleen, an obese(过渡肥胖的)man with too much money and power, faced a choice. Outside his office waited his personal doctor, bringing him the important news about the onlymedicine that could save his life. On the other side of the world, one of his engineers waited for his decision on an important matter of business.
His secretary asked him whether she could bring the doctor in. The billionaire businessman made his decision. “Business comes first,” answered Saleen. Despite the health problem caused by his huge weight, he was still crazy about making money. He raised a fat finger, and one of his staff(员工)hurried to switch on a large television set.
On the screen appeared his engineer. They talked by satellite directly to each other although they were thousands of miles apart. “It’s all ready to explode(爆破), Mr. Saleen,” he said. His engineer was standing above Pakan Valley in South America. A few months ago, it had been a rainforest. Then Saleen’s men came, cutting down all the valuable trees and forcing the villagers to move out. Across the valley, a dam(大坝)had been built to provide power for the factories that Saleen planned to build in that area. The factories would bring him great profits. Seeing no reason to delay, he ordered the engineer to press the button. There, in the valley, a cloud of dust rose, followed by a dull(沉闷的)explosion., A large river changed its course(河道)and water flooded into the valley.
“Good, that’s it. Now get that doctor in here,” he commanded.
The doctor came in with a worried look and started to examine his wealthy patient. “You are doing very well, Mr. Saleen. The only medicine is saving your life. But the difficulty is getting more of it.”

Every afternoon after school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden.
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass, beautiful flowers, and peach trees whose pink pearly blossoms came out in spring, and that in autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat in the trees and sang so sweetly. The children used to play games, crying and laughing.
“How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.
One day the selfish Giant came back. When he arrived, he saw the children playing in the garden.
“What are you doing here?” he cried loudly, and the children ran away.
“The garden is my own garden,” said the Giant. “I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” So he built a high wall all around it, and put up a notice board reading, “No Entry!”
The poor children had nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, so they did not like it. They used to wander around the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there!” they said to each other.
Then the spring came, and all over the country there were blossoms and birds. Only in the garden of the selfish Giant was it still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. When they saw the notice board they were so sorry for the children. The only ones who were pleased were the snow and the frost. “Spring has forgotten this garden,” they cried, “so we will live here all year round.” The snow covered up the grass, and the frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the cold north wind to stay with them.
“Why is the spring so late in coming?” said the selfish Giant, looking out of the window at his cold white garden. “I hope there will be a change in the weather.”

In old Paris, a cobbler used to live and make and mend shoes and sing songs. He was a very happy cobbler, singing all day long and keeping time with his hammer or his needle. Up one stair, there lived a very rich man, so rich that he could not sleep at night for trying to count his money, and keep it safe.
So this rich man lay awake all night and always fell asleep in the morning. But no sooner had he fallen asleep than he was awakened again. It was not his money that wakened him this time; it was the cobbler, who was sitting at his door sewing away, and singing as happily as a bird.
The rich man went to a friend and said, "I can't sleep at night for thinking of my money, and I can't sleep in the morning for listening to that cobbler's singing. What am I to do?” This friend was a wise man, and gave him a plan. The next evening, while the cobbler was singing away as usual, the rich man came down with a bag filled with something that jingled (叮当作 响).
“Here, cobbler," said the rich man, “I have brought you a present of a hundred crowns(克朗,旧时货币名称),because you're always so happy.”
The cobbler was surprised though, he took the money and thanked the rich man. He had never seen so much money in his life before, but somehow he felt worried if the crowns might be stolen by someone. So he went into the darkest part of his house to count the crowns, and hid the bag in the bottom of the bed. Two or three times every hour he went in to see whether the bag was all right, for he was afraid of somebody taking his money. When his wife asked him what was the matter with him, he became angry and shouted at her, a thing he had never done before.

Jim and Andy walked along the beach, looking for an adventure. They joked that some day they would find a talking fish or a mermaid or a bottle with a treasure map inside. So far they had only found shells and rocks and seaweed. Today though was different. The boys felt excited.
Sea crabs scampered on the rocks. Up one side and down the other. They were quick and lively. The tide didn’t seem to ever wash them away. Then Jim saw a fish. It was stranded on the beach, just flopping around.
“Can it talk?” Andy asked.
“It looks like any other fish,” Jim said. He picked it up gently and carried it to the water.
“Do you think it will grant us any wishes?” Andy laughed.
The boys watched as the silver fish sped off through the water. “No. Maybe next time.” Jim grinned.
As the two friends walked farther down the beach they came upon a bottle. It was green with a cork in the mouth.
“Our luck will change. Does it have a map inside or a genie?” joked Andy.
Andy reached down and picked up the bottle. He rubbed it. Nothing happened. He pulled on the cork. Nothing happened. He shook it. Nothing happened.
“Try the cork again. I bet the genie is waiting for us to release him. Or we’ll find a treasure map and have a real adventure,” Jim exclaimed.
Andy tugged again on the cork. He wiggled it back and forth. He twisted it around and around. Finally it popped out without breaking. Andy shook the bottle. Nothing came out. Looking inside he couldn’t see anything. Jim looked too and shook his head. Empty.
“It’s just an old wine bottle,” Jim complained. He grabbed the bottle and tossed it back onto the sand.

Once upon a time there lived a stone cutter who was dissatisfied with his life. One day, on his way to work, he passed by a beautiful house. It belonged to rich merchant.
From where he stood, he saw fine possessions, honorable guests, and plenty of workers and servants all set to work. He became envious and deeply wished to have everything the wealthy and powerful merchant did.
Suddenly, the stone cutter changed into the merchant taking over his mind and body. He was aware of the merchant’s innermost feelings, thoughts and memories. He felt the joy of owning all the luxuries in the world. He knew the pleasure of holding such a respectable position in the society. Many honored him.
After a few days of enjoying the merchant’s life, he saw a king being carried in a luxurious chair accompanied by attendants, soldiers and servants. Everyone, despite of their power and wealth, was forced to bow before this figure that was worshiped as God.
After seeing this, he realized he had been mistaken about the merchant’s power and status. In a split second, he moved into the body of the king, mighty and fearless. Then he knew what it felt like to be praised and glorified by the entire kingdom, to hold the power to pardon or take a man’s life and what it was like to be respected by kings from other lands.
One day, on a hot summer noon, he was extremely uneasy. His overweight body made the heat even more intolerable. He looked up at the sun and thought about how it was absolutely unaffected by his presence. He then swiftly became the sun, shining with glory, the source of life and strength of every living creature on the planet.
Paragraph 1:
He continued to radiate until a massive storm cloud gathered below him blocking his rays.

A merchant sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest men. The young man wandered through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man that the young man was looking for.
However, instead of finding the holy man, our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity: merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a band was playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it. The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him.
The wise man listened attentively (注意地) to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come back in two hours’ time.
“However, I want to ask you a favor,” he added, handing the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil. “While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill (溢出).”
The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.
“So,” asked the wise man, “did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows of my dining room? Did you see the garden that the master of gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?”
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil the wise man had given him.
“So, go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. “You can’t trust a man if you don’t know his house.”

Once upon a time there was a beautiful garden in which grew all sorts of fruits. Many beasts lived in the garden and they were permitted to eat the fruits whenever they wished. But they should observe one rule. They must make a low, polite bow to the fruit tree, call it by its name and say, “Please give me a taste of your fruit.” They had to be very careful to remember the tree’s correct name and not to forget to say “please”. It was also very important that they should remember not to be greedy. They must always leave plenty of fruits for other beasts who might pass that way, and to adorn (装饰) the tree itself and to furnish seeds so that other trees might grow. If they wished to eat apples, they had to say, “O, apple tree, O, apple tree, please give me a taste of your fruit.”
In one corner of the garden grew the most splendid tree of all. It was tall and beautiful and the rosy-cheeked fruit upon its wide spreading branches looked wonderfully tempting. No beast had ever tasted that fruit, for no beast could ever remember its name. In a tiny house near the edge of the garden lived a little old woman who knew the names of all the fruit trees in the garden. The beasts often went to her and asked the name of the wonderful fruit tree, but the tree was so distant from the tiny house of the little old woman that no beast could ever remember the long, hard name by the time he reached the fruit tree.
At last a monkey thought of a trick. He went to the tiny house of the little old woman, carrying his guitar under his arm. The old woman told him the long, hard name of the fruit tree, and he made up a little tune to it. He sang it over and over again all the way to the tree.

In the faraway land, there was a beautiful kingdom with its special rule. The rule said, everyone may become the king, with all of his rights to govern the country for five years. After that he must be caught, his body will be tied and he will be thrown away to a faraway island where the jungle is thick and there are plenty of wild animals and no humans.
Then, one by one, people became the king. The first man said, “OK, I’m ready to be the king.” And he became a king for five years. What he did in his five years was enjoying his position. He threw big parties, went to many beautiful places, married many women, collected many valuable things and did other things that pleased himself. Those were all he did and he never prepared anything his future. Until one day the time came. One morning when the king woke up, suddenly strong soldiers came to his palace and said, “We came here under the order of law. Now it’s time for you to be thrown away to the faraway island.” The king wasn’t surprised but he felt that time went too fast. He had enjoyed himself in the past five years but now he had to accept his destiny with tears in his eyes. The soldiers sent him to the dangerous island and left. All they heard was the voices of the wild animals and the long scream of the former king and then it was silent again.
Every other king was the same until a young man came and became the king. Unlike other kings who followed their passion for having fun, the king was always seen to be thinking about something deeply.

A water bearer had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years, this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water in his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you". The bearer asked, "Why? What are you ashamed of? " The pot replied, "For these past two years I am able to deliver only half of my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you don't get full value for your efforts".
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion, he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." As they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it somewhat. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.
Paragraph 1:
“Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot's side? ” The bearer said to the pot.

Long ago there was a king who had twin sons. There was some confusion about which one was born first. As they grew up, the king found a fair way to decide one of them as crown (皇冠) prince.
Calling them together, he said seriously, “My sons, the day will come when one of you must be the future king. The burdens (负担) of being a king are very heavy. To find out which of you is better able to bear (承担) them cheerfully, I am sending you together to a far corner of the kingdom. One of my advisors there will place equal burdens on your shoulders (肩膀). My crown will one day go to the one who returns first bearing his burden like a king should.”
In a spirit of the friendly competition, the brothers set out together. Soon they met a weak and old woman struggling under a heavy weight. One of the boys suggested that they stop to help her. The other protested: “We have a burden of our own to worry about. Let us be on our way.”
So the second son hurried on while the other stayed behind to help the woman with her load. On his journey to the kingdom, the same young man found others who needed help. A blind man who needed help to get home; a lost child whom he carried back to her worried parents; a farmer whose wagon (马车) needed a strong shoulder to push it out of the mud.
Eventually he did reach his father’s advisor. There he gained his own burden and started home with it safely on his shoulders.

The artful Arab
Many years ago, there was a man named Nabor in an Arabian tribe (部落), who owned a beautiful horse. This horse was famous for being both fast and gentle. Admiring this horse for long,an Arab named Jehu had offered his camels and many valuable treasures for the horse, but Nabor refused.
Jehu then devised a trick, hoping to get the horse to himself. He decided to dress in rags, dirtyhis face and blindfold himself. Then, he lay by the roadside to wait for the owner of the horse.
When he saw Nabor coming on his beautiful horse, he cried out in a weak voice, “I am dying; help me please. For three days and nights I have been unable to move from this spot to find food.”
Nabor kindly offered to take him on his horse and carry him home; but Jehu replied,“I cannot stand;I have no strength left.” Nabor felt pity and got off his horse. He led his horse to the man and, with great difficulty, helped him onto the horse’s back. But, once Jehu was sitting in the saddle (鞍), he kicked the horse and galloped off (疾驰), calling out as he did so, “I have the horse; and you will never see it again.Goodbye!”
Nabor was surprised and sad at first, but he soon ran after the thief, shouting to him to stop as he had something to say.
Certain that Nabor could not catch him by foot, Jehu turned the horse and stopped a short distance from Nabor. “You have taken my horse,” said Nabor, “but since I can do nothing to stop you, I have to accept my loss; but I beg you never to tell anyone how you got the horse.”
“And why not?” asked Jehu. “Because,” replied Nabor, “another man might be truly sick and in trouble, and men would be too fearful to help him. In this way, you would prevent others doing what is good and right for fear of being tricked as I have been.”
