    一、读后续写
    1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mrs. Palin spoke as she walked to the front of the classroom, “Next Wednesday, I’ll give you a test to check your ability as a conductor. Now, select one of the composers listed on the chalkboard. And after class, find a tape containing the composition created by the composer. During the test, use the tape player to play the composition. When the music starts, imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra that performs the composer’s music.” And then she smiled, “You’ll receive the test in front of your classmates.”
“What? A test in front of the classmates? It will kill me,” I said to myself. Although normally I performed well in music, and often have high marks, I am quite a shy girl. After a short while, I took a deep breath and scanned the list of names on the chalkboard. One name caught my attention.
“Who’s that person?” I wondered. I didn’t know, but that was going to be my choice.
Seated in the classroom, I fixed my eyes on that name anxiously, hoping no one would announce that name. Finally, it was my turn. I said without a second thought, “Johannes Brahms.” once I said the name, panic washed over me. I sighed, “How am I going to do this? I know nothing about the person and his composition. But I have to perform in front of my classmates and teacher.”
Later in the day, I went to a store and bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms’s compositions and its relevant music notation (乐谱). Back home, played the tape, and tried to get familiar with the composition. When listening to the composition and looking at the music score, I held a stick and moved my arms to and fro (来回地), pretending to be guiding an orchestra. During the following days, I kept practicing but didn’t perform quite well. The composition was indeed hard to me.
When the big day came, I felt nervous as I slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to perform. Eventually, Mrs. Palin called my name, “Jill, it’s your turn.”

    Paragraph 2:
The next day, Mrs. Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then, I forced myself to walk to the front of the classroom. Standing in front of all the students made me very nervous, and my legs kept shaking. To make the matter worse, my brain went blank at that very moment, forgeting my previous practice. However, I tried to remind myself to be calm. After a few deep breaths, I felt much better and began to perform. Thinking my conduct must be terrible, I was even unwilling to think about the result.
The next day, Mrs. Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score. With my report card in hand, my heart pounded because I was afraid that I would be the one who got the lowest score. I closed my eyes and slowly opened my report card. To my surprise, I got a high score. When the teacher announced that I was the best in my class, I almost jumped with joy. I understood that only by working hard, can we get good results.

Sometimes things may seem beyond our efforts, but keep on and you will find beautiful views in front of you.
I was on my second outdoor experience trip that every student had to go on. That year, we had a choice of what difficulty level we wanted: one through five. My friends and I had agreed that one would make us seem lazy and that challenging ourselves would make for a good story. In choosing level two, we believed that it would still be a fun experience.
    We were quickly proven wrong.
The further we drove into the White Mountains, the higher the walls on either side of the winding highway grew. I was still in awe of the mountains I had seen so many times before, but I couldn’t help feeling my heart shaking with anxiety. Soon I would have to leave the school bus that brought 50 students out into the wilderness like every year before.
My group consisted of my friends, Riley and Ann, and six extremely athletic boys. We arrived at base camp lodge (木屋) first. After putting things aside and rearranging our bags, we made our way out into the wilderness.
The three of us girls were questioning if this was really a level two. The path was unbelievably steep (陡峭) and rocky toward the top of the mountain where the first hut was located. We were practically jogging in an attempt to keep up with the boys ahead of us. Before the trip, we were told to take breaks as often as we needed to drink water, but that wasn’t helping our pounding hearts and heavy breathing as much as it should have.
Then, 30 minutes into the most difficult hike the three of us had ever done, Riley slipped and landed on her knee. After a few moments, we turned back down the mountain as it was decided that Riley could not make the trip with us. We sat on the grass outside the lodge where we had started while Riley was brought inside to join the level one group. Ann and I exchanged breathless glances, our cheeks red and wet with sweat.

The next days, although extremely tired, we kept on.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】Paragraph 1:
“Do you think we should ask if we could join the level one group too?” I asked Ann. “I know you won’t,” she breathed out. “I won’t!” I said to myself, looking at the awesome mountains in the distance. Then we started up the steep and rocky path again, attempting to keep up with the boys. Our bags felt heavier; legs burned; backs hurt; tears threatened to spill over our sweat-covered eyes. I wanted nothing more than to turn back and leave right then and there. But, I couldn’t; I didn’t want to be someone who gave up easily.
    Paragraph 2:
The next days, although extremely tired, we kept on. Ann and I still found ourselves lagging behind the boys. Instead of embarrassment, I felt as though I was gaining more out of the trip than anyone else. As the boys ran, Ann and I hung back and took breaks, drinking water and admiring the deep green valleys from high above. Level two was fun, too. And eventually we made it to the destination. Facing the beautiful views in front of us, I exchanged a glance with Ann, both of us beaming.

Life is Good Clothing is a 100 million-dollar company run by brothers Bert and John Jacobs. Like any other businessmen, they went through a lot of failures. However, the idea
“Life is good” from their mother kept them going and inspired them to build a clothing company that is now very successful.
In 1988, Bert and Jacobs took a seven-week road trip from California to Boston. The brothers said this trip changed their lives forever as they looked back on their childhood. According to the Jacobs, their childhood was perfectly-imperfect. Their house did not have heating but they were taught to always see the good in things.
They remembered playing outside all day and when it was dinner time, they would gather around the dinner table. Their mother would say to them, “Tell me something good that happened today.” Their father had a near — death accident which caused severe damage to his right hand. The accident made their father develop a terrible temper (脾气),but their mother would always sing to them and read them children’s stories. “That optimism was something our family always had, even when we had little else,” the brothers said.
During the trip, they tried to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives and decided to run a clothing business. They started selling T-shirt designs in street fairs around Boston. Their design was just a simple drawing of a stick figure with the phrase “Life is good.”
Their small business didn’t turn out so well, but the two brothers did not give up. Then they changed their target audience. This time, they tried to sell their T-shirts to college students, going to different schools every night. Again it did not work. To figure out what they had been doing wrong, Bert and John held beer parties, where they asked their friends for their honest opinions. In return , they could enjoy free beer and amusing stories from the brothers. Again this did not seem to work and they were running out of money.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, someone noticed their design and showed sincere appreciation.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】However, they took the risk and held another party which they thought was the last. A friend suggested that they should put “Life is Good” shirt on a table for sale again and told customers the story about it. So they did it and they explained that they drew their inspiration from their mother. While there were plenty of challenges growing up, their mom focused on what was right in the world and the family, which meant they wanted to spread the word about optimism.
Finally, someone noticed their design and showed sincere appreciation. And they sold 48 shirts in 45 minutes. More and more people were attracted by this phrase, which were good wishes for them. At last, the two brothers succeeded because they believed that optimism created the opportunities. As for them, optimism was not only their mom’s spirit, but also their purpose, which brightened their life like a bright light. They never gave up on the way to business because they knew that they weren’t created for business, but it was created for them. So the business should serve their life’s purpose.

My dad's life seemed typical of his generation. He graduated from high school during the Depression and worked for a large company. He enlisted (入伍) in 1941, served in the Pacific and Europe.
On returning, he met my mother, married and had three children. Because of the job, he needed to continue his education. With his full-time job and attending to his family, he attended college in the evening and obtained his degree.
As kids, we knew what Dad told us. During cold winters he sympathized with unfortunate kids in just T-shirt and shorts. He was saddened by children with nothing under the Christmas tree. He loved kids and schools and he wanted to spread kindness to everyone in need of help, so he was always ready to give a hand to people he met.
With us three kids on our own. Dad and Mom retired and came to Florida. Two years later Mom died, in 1980. From that time. Dad got into the habit of walking around his house. He also tried golf but failed to become addicted to it. Although it was hard time for Dad, he didn't give up the hope of life. He decided to do something meaningful to society.
Then he saw an ad requesting literacy (读写能力) volunteers. Dad helped some children, who were homeless learn to read and write. He also helped an old man learn to read because his literate wife was going blind. He told us he even wanted to be a teacher to help more people.
As time passed, Dad had some health problems. His legs became weak and he started to have trouble in sleeping. My brother, my younger sister and I came to look after him, telling him to stop doing the volunteer work and have a rest at home. However, he was so stubborn that he disagreed with us and insisted on his decision.

    【答案】A possible version
Before long, Dad made his dream come true. As it happened, a teacher who lived near Dad's home resigned. The school needed someone to help teach students. Dad realized it was time to take action. He began work as a teacher's assistant in a third grade class, helping children with spelling and grading papers. He spent a lot of time with the students, playing games and singing songs with them. As a result, all the students like getting along with him.
One year later, something surprising happened. Dad's physical condition turned better. He explained to me that the students kept him healthy. He said every time he stayed with the children, he moved and smiled a lot, which made him feel energetic and happy. Seeing Dad was satisfied with life, I learned a lesson: Our value shouldn't be limited by the face and age, but it should depend on what we can do for others.

On March 16, 2020 my left leg was injured. At that time, I thought it was a simple injury, but a medical doctor later told me that it was a serious fracture(骨折) and that I would have to be in bed for three months. It was shocking for me. I’d never spent more than 8 hours in bed before.
I am a full-time social worker and have many projects that require my active involvement(参加). I hardly had time to visit my home, but my fractured leg stopped all things. I had to stay at home for a long time. It was bad and also good. It stopped all my work, but it also gave me an opportunity to spend time with myself and my family.
I was sad and worried. How would I spend three months in bed? Who would care for me? Early in my injury and before my operation, one of my friends offered his room in a rented house. I was grateful for his kind support. He did all things for me. I didn’t have any other choices.
I realized in my mind that I should be positive and change my lifestyle according to the situation. It was not so simple or easy. I needed to be more focused and calm. I began to practice thinking alone, read books, create more poems and talk with friends.
There were so many ups and downs in my confidence. So many times negative thoughts bothered me. I felt very sad, but I often got support from my family and friends. During this difficult period, lots of good things also happened to me. I spent so much time with myself that I had plenty of opportunities to read some good books and improve myself, while receiving good care from my friends and family.
After the operation on my leg, I realized I needed additional care to recover, so I had to stay at Kindness Home, near my family.

【答案】I decided to organize a reading group to pass the time at Kindness Home. I have many friends and relatives who like reading books. I wrote emails to them and told them what I was considering. They were happy and supported my idea. Soon afterwards, my friends and relatives came to my place to get together for the first time. We discussed the activities and plans about the reading group together. We decided to read a book every two weeks and meet with me twice a week to talk about our reading experience.
The members of our reading group also cared about other patients. With the progress of our reading activities, other patients there showed great interest in reading. So our reading group members added another activity to help those patients read. We bought a lot of books for the patients. As they devoted themselves to reading, they no longer felt lonely. We took turns to gather in each room and sometimes bought gifts for them. Time flew quickly in happiness, and I recovered to go home before I knew it.

Only four years ago, Kameelah was told that she would never walk again. But now, with the support of her father James, she can run, jump and even get her green belt in Tae Kwondo(跆拳道).
When Kameelah was 11, she was diagnosed as scoliosis(脊椎侧凸).Her family was told that only 10 percent of all children were troubled by scoliosis, but they just couldn't believe Kameelah was a part of that 10 percent.
Her first surgery was arranged immediately. The doctor had the difficult task of rebuilding Kameelah's entire spine(脊椎)and then re-situating her organs around it. "I had never been in the hospital for anything serious before, and I'd never had surgery , either . I was so scared , " Kameelah recalled .
She was given something to fall asleep for the surgery, so that she would not feel anything. Because this surgery dealt with the spine and nerve connections to the brain, the doctor had to make sure that Kameelah could still move her body parts right .Therefore, she was woken up in the middle of the surgery. "They asked me to move my fingers, then my toes. I could hardly understand what was going on. It was bright, and things weren't very clear. To look back, I can't believe that I was awake while my back was open, and the doctors had their hands in there.
"The first surgery was successful, but Kameelah would have to return two more times for the doctor to completely fix the problem. It was at the end of the third surgery when things went wrong...really wrong. The doctor put in a metal stick, which happened to be too small , into Kameelah's back . As a result , it affected some of the nerves in her spine. She was practically paralyzed(几乎瘫痪)from the waist down.

At thirteen, I was diagnosed with kind of attention disorder, It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not. I just sat there, doing nothing.
However, everything changed when a new teacher, Mrs. Smith, taught me. In my first literature class. Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.”
She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are no different from others, young man.”
I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead. he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?

The next morning, I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day —with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words from my teacher: “See what you can do with the difficult task when you keep trying?”
    Para 2:
As a student, I can tell you that there is nothing better than being praised by my teacher. A unique sense of accomplishment arose. I couldn’t wait to tell my mum as I got home. She was very happy for me and encouraged me to continue to work harder than my classmates. Although the teacher praised me. I was not proud, because I am no different from others. No one will give up but yourself. You should always treat yourself as a normal person.

A while ago, when I was a 25-year-old youth, I traveled across the United States on a journey to make a film. During that trip, I ended up in Seattle where I met Laddie McCrea.
Laddie was a hobo (流浪汉). He was about 60-70 years old and looked 100. Laddie had shoulder length white hair covered with weeds from the preious might's bedding (垫草). He was in rags with an unpleasant smell of alcohol and garbage.
When I first met Laddie, he was standing on a busy downtown Seattle sidewalk. He greeted every passer-by, with a smile, a pleasant greeting and an extended palm (手掌). Each day, society was rushing past Laddie, either unaware of his existence or avoiding him, a smelly, begging hobo.
I found Laddie to be an excellent character for my movie, so I wanted to pay him to allow me to stand in the background and film him. However, He rejected the money but accepted my requirement. Then, I spent three days hidden among the crowd, filming Laddie. Most of the time he was unaware of my existence. Each day he stood in a busy section of town greeting the world with a smile and an extended palm, in order to earn enough change for the evening's night cap.
One special day, as I watched from a bench off in the distance, a young girl, around 6 or 7, with a pretty dress, approached Laddie from behind and tugged on his shirt. Laddie turned to the girl. She then reached up and handed him something. At that, Laddie showed his happiness and reached in his pocket, gave her something and the girl ran back to her parents excitedly showing them what she had received.

I asked Laddie why he refused to take my money and kept smiling.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I was curious about the exchange. So I went immediately to Laddie and asked him what had happened. The truth was that the little girl came up to him and gave him a quarter, so he gave her two quarters in return. He said he wanted to show her an idea that when people are generous, they will receive more than they give. I felt shocked by what Laddie said and got lost in thought. Minutes later, I had a question and wanted to know its answer.
I asked Laddie why he refused to take my money and kept smiling. He explained he wanted to help me do something but he couldn't take credit for what he did not do. He continued to tell me about the reason why he kept smiling to the people in the street. That's because he wanted to pay something back for their kindness. What a generous man he was, even though he still was stuck in his life. However, he had a great spirit.

The gray sky outside my kitchen window matched how I felt inside. Hopeless. I sighed and turned away. Life had lost all meanings.
Nearly a year earlier, on a sunny July day, I drove to a nearby lake to celebrate my birthday with friends and family. After a long workweek, I was looking forward to our picnic. And I couldn’t wait to get in the water. I loved swimming. “Here I go,” I shouted as I dived headfirst from a boat into the lake. That was the last thing I remember. I was pulled unconscious from the water with a severely damaged spine (脊柱), paralyzed from the waist down.
After months of treatment in hospital, I was finally home. But things weren’t going well. I had to adjust to my disability and life changes. I was impatient with myself as well as my family. Turning from the kitchen window couldn’t drive the grayness away. Oh God, what am I going to do? My life has fallen apart.
A few days later, I poured out my misfortune to Jeryy, a good friend and neighbor who came to visit in my front yard. “I don’t feel like I have a reason to get out of bed,” I told him. Jerry was quiet. His eyes were focused on my mulberry tree. “Look,” he whispered. “There’s a male cardinal. On that lower branch to the right.” I saw the beautiful bird with its long tail, black mask and bright red feather. “They like to build nests in thick bushes,” Jerry said, “and mostly eat seeds. They dine regularly at bird feeders, especially in the winter.”
Cheer, cheer, cheer, the cardinal sang in a sweet voice. I’d seen such birds before. Now as I studied this one, I realized I’d never really seen a cardinal. He was amazing. Cheer, cheer, cheer, he sang again before leaping into the sky.
From that day on, Jerry continued to introduce me to various new birds, like the sweet-sounding nightingale and the elegant hummingbird. Curiosity, like a light, awakened inside me.

    【答案】One possible version:
The strong interest drove me to watch and record more birds in my yard. To attract more birds, I built birdbaths and birdfeeders in my yard, providing them with water and food. And I made it. Every bird flying in interested me. So obsessed with bird watching was I that I even equipped myself with a digital camera. Though confined in my wheelchair, I observed carefully and managed to photograph their graceful figures. Under Jerry’s guidance, I even started my own bird watching journal, recording their nest building, child-raising and singing. With patience and persistence, I built incredible friendship with these lovely visitors.
With my bird friends, I found back my passion for life. I didn’t sit around, feeling sorry for myself any longer. Infected by the sweet melody of nightingales, I sang along. Struck by the beauty of cardinals, I took photos of them, one of which even earned me a prize. What a surprise! Their cheerful life taught me to forget my misfortune and enjoy life. I became patient and caring like before. Now I saw no grayness out of my kitchen window but vigorous angels. More importantly, my elegant bird friends restored my hope in life.

When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.
It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He'd return home in Des Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? "He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others," said his mother, Cortney Lewis. "That really hurt him." Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?
A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader from Washington middle school, Iowa. The boy, then 14, had become an Internetstar after posting videos of his slam dunk(扣篮) , and, like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce—he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to encourage Jayce and build his confidence.

    【答案】Paragraph 1:
A few days later, the good news that Trashaun accepted the invitation to meet Jayce came. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later and they instantly bonded. The day was not spent on self-pity. Instead, they rode bikes around the school's hallways, took photos, and played basketball together. Trashaun taught Jayce how to slam dunks, even giving him a basketball as a gift. He told Jayce he was perfect the way he looked. He encouraged him not to let anyone drag him down and shake his confidence.
    Paragraph 2:
After the meeting, Jayce learned to accept his disability. He began to understand that there are many people like him and came to adapt himself to his disability. He recently started practising shooting basketball every day and he really loves it. Jayce often chats with Trashaun on the Internet about basketball skills as well as some school issues. He is really motivated by this role model and has a positive attitude to his future life. As for Trashaun, he never dreamed that his videos would have such an impact. His relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids.

The most important change in a person’s life is the change of his or her attitude. Right attitudes produce right actions. Have you ever met someone who gave you a different view of life?
On a Sunday morning, I saw something very interesting as I went to the greengrocer’s. To get there, I had to cross a bridge over railway tracks. The bridge was pretty high. A set of steep steps had to be climbed; then the bridge flattened out (变平), followed by coming down another set of steps. On my way back from the greengrocer’s, I saw an elderly gentleman running up the steps. After watching him run up the steps so fast, I thought that he could be in a rush.
Before I knew it, he had crossed the bridge, and then he ran back to where he started. To my surprise, he did not stop. He turned around, and then went up and down the bridge again. He was not struggling, and seemed to enjoy going up and down the bridge. Being a fitness fanatic (热衷于健美的人) myself, I admired his ability to Cross the bridge so quickly. My curiosity got the better of me, and I came up to him to have a chat with him.
“Excuse me, sir. Are you training for an event?” I asked.
He stopped. “No, not training for an event. Well, I am training for life,” he said with a broad smile on his face as sweat rolled down his cheeks.
I told him that I had been looking for a role model of fitness, and that I hoped to be as strong as he is when I get to his age. He said that everyone has a choice about what they do with their life. “I am not different,” he added. With much admiration, I asked, “What drives you to maintain good health?”

    Paragraph 2:
His great determination paid off, and he was able to walk again. His love for life and for fitness is what makes him cross the bridge many times. Moved by his story, I told him that it was an honor to meet a role model like him and that I wanted to make friends with him. He agreed happily. The rain came down steady and hard. Jason Storie heard it but was not worried as he prepared for a day of caving with five friends in a remote spot 80 miles northwest of his home in Duncan, on Canada’s Vancouver Island.
It was 6 a.m. on December 5, 2015. As a newcomer to the sport, Jason had gone caving only four times. This would be his toughest outing yet: a cave called Cascade. It was dangerous enough that the entrance was blocked by a locked metal door to keep the casual cavers out. About a mile long and 338 feet deep, Cascade was full of tums and barely passable tight squeezes.
Jason was new among the group, with the least experience and, at 43, older by a decade or more. It was his friend Andrew Munoz, 33, who introduced him to the sport. Unlike Jason, Andrew was an expert caver-a former caving guide, actually.
They hiked a bit before coming to the door, which sat in the ground—you’d miss it if you weren’t looking for it. It was 10 a.m. With their way lighted by headlamps, they walked down a narrow passage studded with sharp rocks. The silence was broken by a drip-drip-drip from above. Soon the drip turned into a light but steady flow, and they were wading in water up to their ankles, then to their shins.
Two hours later, they approached one of the features that made the cave unique: a narrow passage not big enough to stand up in that led into a short, tight downhill. This had a name: Bastard’s Crawl. Four streams met here, and indeed, the water was flowing more quickly. The sound of the water had turned into a roar. When they finally neared the top of the Crawl, there were barely four inches of air left between the water and the ceiling. not enough for them to keep their heads up to breathe. They came to terrifying realization that they were in danger!

    Paragraph 2:

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The water kept rising, and there was no hope of rescue. The hours passed. Jason and Andrew didn’t dare to move for fear of slipping. They dozed off and then jerked themselves awake. Every once in a while, one of them turned on his headlamp to check the water level. An hour later, the water level went down enough that they could try an escape. Stiff from keeping in one position for 12 hours, they slowly unfolded their bodies. Jason screamed in pain, but he was determined not to let it stop him.
Slowly but steadily, the group made their way forward. Still, each time Jason moved a leg, he cried out. Over the next 90 minutes, they made their way toward the entrance, at times in chest-high water. Now, in a passage that was high enough for them to walk upright, Jason saw something flicker in the distance. “Lights! I see lights!” Jason shouted out. “What’s wrong with you, dear?” said Granny Bell to a little boy, who sat near a wall at the back of the house. He had a book in his hand, and tears were in his eyes.
“We have all got a poem called Little Jim to learn,” said the boy, whose name was Tom Blair, and the one who says it best is to get a prize from the master. But I don’t think I can learn it.”
    “Why not?” said Granny Bell.
“The boys say that I can’t, and that I need not try,” said Tom in a sad tone.
“Don’t mind what the boys say. Let them see that you can learn it,” said his friend.
“But I don’t think I can,” said Tom, “it is so long, and some of the words are so hard. I know I need not try for the prize. But I should like to learn the poem as well as I can; for the boys laugh at me, and call me ‘Slow Tom.’”
“Well, dear,” said Granny Bell, in a kind voice, “if you are slow, and can’t help it, try to be ‘slow and sure,’ they say. Look at the snail (蜗牛) on the wall; how slow it is! And yet, if you watch it, you will see it will get to the top in time. So just try to learn a few lines each day, and you may gain he prize in the end. And when you feel like losing heart, think of the snail on the wall.”
When Granny Bell had said this, she went on her way. And Tom thought that, though he could not keep up with the boys, he might run a race with the snail. So he determined to try to learn his task by the time the snail got to the top of the wall.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】one possible version:
At last, the day came when the master was to give the prize, and after he called upon five or six boys to repeat the poem, it came to Tom's turn. Tom got up slowly but in a confident way. He looked so silent and still. However, there was a laugh from the boys in the classroom, because most of the boys thought that he would fail. But he did not miss a word. He recited the poem so fluently that all his classmates were astonished.
“Well done! Tom! Tell me how you made it!” said the master joyfully. “Sir, it was the snail on the wall that taught me how to do it,” said Tom, “I saw it crawl up the wall bit by bit. So I determined to learn it bit by bit, and didn’t give up.” Hearing this, the classroom rang with a loud, long cheer, for all were glad that “Slow Tom” had got the prize at last.

Joan MacDonald is 75 years old this year. She started hitting the gym on a regular basis just a few years ago at the age of 70.
Back then, Joan was out of shape and at a low point in her life. She was dealing with added pounds and a trip to the doctor only confirmed her fears that her health was on the decline. Worse still, the treatments given by her doctor weren't working well. Her blood pressure was still high, and she also had kidney (肾) problems. After a tough conversation with her daughter who is a personal trainer, Joan knew she needed to be the one to make a change. So she began to work out at once.
In January, 2017, she flew down to Mexico. There her daughter was hosting a kind of camp for women like her, who hoped to lose some weight and feel their best. It was there that she learned how to document her journey on Instagram. It was very tiring at the beginning because she had to learn the skills as well as doing something challenging with her body. She had to learn how to eat properly, how many meals to eat, and how to do her exercises, hoping that she got them done right.
It was especially difficult, because while Joan was dealing with all of the physical diseases that result from aging, she was also fighting against a generational mindset, one that didn't look at exercise and eating healthily the same way we do now.
She managed to stay active all these years by chasing after her children, taking care of her family and prioritizing everyone else's needs above her own. But when her kids grew up. Joan didn't have many hobbies that got her up and moving. Therefore, sharing her fitness photos on Instagram became that hobby.

So far, hitting the gym regularly has benefited Joan a lot.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】One possible version:
Joan has 1.3 million fans on Instagram. These fans are always giving her a lot of good feedback. She understands that they just need someone to show them the way. Therefore, apart from the photos, she also shares some inspiration from her workout and her ideas for meal. She knows how impossible it can feel to start a fitness adventure at an age like hers. And she’s doing something right if her fans are anything to measure by.
So far, hitting the gym regularly has benefited Joan a lot. She has stopped all of the medications she was relying on. She lost 50 pounds in her first year of exercising regularly. She has become thin and strong. She always walks happily through her daily gym routine. Her experience shows that everyone should put their health first and that the secret to aging better is to do the things you’ve wanted to do and do them right now.

    15.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last night, my partner John and I went to the levees (堤岸) where I was relearning how to run. He supported on his bike and I went as fast or as slow as my old legs wanted to take me. Ahead of us was a very old man with a plastic bag who seemed to be unable to walk a straight line. John said, “You keep running, and I will check on him.”
John was holding his hand. John told the man, “We are going to come back this way. If you are still here, we will check on you.” The man said he was fine but he was going to stay down for a bit. He was on the ground at the bottom of the levee and off a walkway that backed up into other people’s homes. We ran on for 10-15 minutes or so and turned around.
John rode ahead to see if he was still there. When I got to the spot, there was John and the man. The man didn’t look fine — he was stumbling (蹒跚而行) around and seemed lost.
The man in the meantime tried to climb up the levee and fell again and as he sat there, I walked down. I said, “Hi, my name is Mia, what’s your name?” He laughed and looked at me. I said light-heartedly, “I am relearning how to run. I didn’t realize it was so difficult.” He said, “Oh my son and I run too — yeah it’s not always easy.”
It was starting to get dark. Turns out the man’s name was John also. I said, “Shall we walk together, John?” He said, “Okay.” He didn’t want me to grab his hand or arm to help him, so I said, “I’ll just stand by you if that is okay.” “That’s okay,” he said.
We walked down the levee together with John riding behind. Through our walk he swerved (急转弯) from either side of the levee — I stayed calm and moved to either side casually trying not to look like I was blocking.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I said to our new friend John, “Do you know why we are concerned?”

He waved goodbye to us and practically ran into the dark.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
I said to our new friend John,“Do you know why we are concerned?” He quietly smiled and said, “Not really.” “You seem just a little unstable and it’s getting late. It’s not safe for you to walk alone. Will you let us take you home?” I asked a few times in various kind ways and each time he shook his head. At last, I said carefully, “At least let’s walk together until we get to the sidewalk. Then we will feel relaxed.” “That’s good,” he said with a big smile on his face.
    Paragraph 2:
He waved goodbye to us and practically ran into the dark. We saw that he had made the right turns and was on a way that was safer, with light and no cliffs. We had to trust he would be okay and I said a little prayer to the universe. We felt so happy because we did a good deed to help an old man who’s positive and independent. We were also encouraged by this old man’s spirit. What a wonderful experience we have had!
