Fahey left her jb and cmpleted an MBA befre setting up a mve t New Yrk t begin a degree. Hwever, the pprtunity f an pen year between the MBA and the degree came up, and as a keen turing cyclist, Fahey realised that a much dreamed-abut adventure was nw becming a pssibility: "The ride in Africa had been n my fantasy list. It was a mment when I realised that I culd d anything, s I shuld."
Fahey rde acrss Africa, a 7,500-mile trip that tk fur mnths. The whle experience had a life-changing impact. Fahey said: “Bicycles prvide a literal freedm. Yu dn't allw yurself t feel like that in everyday life because there are s many distractins. But when yu' re ut n the bike and there's nthing else, yu' re really free t experience what life is.”
Pst-degree, Fahey wrked n prjects with the UNDP(United Natins Develpment Prject) in Mntenegr with the aim f bringing investment t rural cmmunities.
It was while wrking n these prjects that the seeds were swn fr the next new investment. “It was thrugh my trip acrss Africa that I discvered pannier and rack systems incnvenient and I was never ging t use them again.” Little did she knw this wuld lead her t start up her wn cmpany.
In 2013, Apidura was brn, prducing strage slutins fr peple lking t travel the wrld by bike, race acrss cntinents and carry all they need t d s. It's nw a successful glbal brand, but Fahey remains reflective abut what else the cmpany can d fr peple.

Reading minds may nt be simple, but it might be pssible actually. What if a brain scan culd reveal yur memries? A team f British scientists recently just did that—they used brain scans t lk at spatial(空间的)memry in fur peple. Spatial memry is the kind f memry yu use t remember where yu are. Yu use spatial memry t remember hw t get frm yur huse t schl. Peple build spatial memry as they explre a new city r a new building and take in infrmatin abut their surrundings.
The scientists asked each participant t sit dwn at a cmputer and wander thrugh 3D rms. These virtual rms cntained images f bjects, like clcks and drs, s that the peple culd knw where they were. Each persn was encuraged t explre the virtual space.
As the peple became familiar with these rms, their brains were taking ntes f where things were, and hw t get frm ne pint t anther. After bserving these rms, the participants were instructed t g t a specific lcatin within the rms. At this pint, the scientists tk pictures f the peple's brains using an instrument called FMRI(核磁共振成像) .
As participants stared at the flr, the scientists tk FMRI scans t measure brain activity. They repeated this prcess many times. After a few repetitins, the scientists recgnized the patterns in the participants' brains. By lking at patterns n the brain scans, the scientists were able t read the spatial memry f the test subjects.
This experiment shws that it is pssible t use FMRI t gather sme kinds f memries frm peple. Hwever, yur secret thughts and persnal memries are safe—fr nw. “It is nt the case that we can put smene in a brain scanner and simply read his private thughts,” said ne f the scientists wh wrked n the prject.
    28. What can we learn abut spatial memry frm the first paragraph?

    B. It lets yu remember what has been dne.
    C. It helps yu memrize places where yu are.
    D. It takes in infrmatin abut new knwledge.
    29. Which f the fllwing is the right rder f the study?
    a. The scientists tk phts f the brains with the FMRI.
    b. The scientists read the spatial memry f the participants.
    c. The participants were asked t explre virtual rms.
    d. The scientists repeated the prcess a few times.
    A. a, b, c, d B. c, a, d, b C. b, c, d, a D. c, d, a, b
    30. Why are ur secret mind and private memries safe?
    A. Because FMRIs can’t gather any memry frm peple.
    B. Because scientists can't understand all pictures taken by FMRIs.
    C. Because FMRIs can't be cmpletely reliable nw.
    D. Because scientists can't read peple's thughts directly.
    31. What des the passage mainly talk abut?
    A. Spatial memry and FMRIs. B. What is spatial memry.
    C. Hw scientists can read peple's memries. D. A new kind f camera—FMRIs.
    D
This is the greatest mystery f ur adult life: Hw can we spend all day typing at a cmputer and g hme feeling exhausted? Hw culd merely activating the small muscles f ur fingers leave us wrn ut at the end f the day? What causes mental fatigue?
“It is kind f a mystery, t be hnest.” said Michael Inzlicht, a University f Trnt psychlgist wh studies self-cntrl, mtivatin, and fatigue. But scientists d have sme clues. There is a hypthesis fr why we get s tired frm wrk when we're nt physically active. We get s tired because ur mtivatin runs ut. As we wrk n a task, we struggle t fcus n it r eventually lse interest in it. We becme less mtivated t d the task. We becme drawn t the things we want t d (brwsing scial media r reading music blgs, fr instance) rather than the things we have t d.
Researchers in the UK published new evidence that finds sme indirect evidence fr the mtivatinal mdel. This study tracked 100 nurses in the UK ver tw 12-hur shifts.
Thrughut the shifts, the nurses reprted hw fatigued they felt at regular intervals. They als wre devices that mnitred and tracked the amunt f physical activity they were engaged in. When the researchers investigated what culd pssibly explain the fatigue, they fund sme interesting patterns. Here's the result: There was n cnnectin between the amunt f physical wrk the nurses did and their feelings f fatigue. Instead, they fund this small cnnectin: The nurses wh were least likely t feel fatigued frm their wrk als felt the mst in cntrl f their wrk, and the mst rewarded fr it. These feelings may have bsted their mtivatin, which may have bsted their perceptin f having energy.
Inzlicht has als fund evidence fr the mtivatinal mdel in his wrk. A few years ag, he and Carletn University psychlgist Marina Milyavskaya mnitred 159 students at McGill University in Canada fr a week. “What was surprising t us was the biggest predictr f fatigue, nt whether they had self-cntrl.” Inzlicht said. “Instead, the predictr was the number f temptatins they felt.” “If yu're typing at wrk, and if yu're anything like me, yu gt a few brwsers pen. These lead t temptatins,” he said. “Temptatins make us less mtivated t d ur wrk, which, in turn, may make us tired.”
And there may be an evlutinary reasn fr why ur brains wuld d this. “As an rganism, we need t meet multiple gals t survive.” Inzlicht explains. “We're nt merely fcused n finding fd r pursuing ur passins in life. We need t d all these things t be a healthy, thriving species.” Because these multiple gals cmpete with ne anther (fr ur time), we need a mechanism sending signals. “Hey, stp ding that thing and d smething else.” That mechanism, he suggests, culd be fatigue. In this light, bsting ur mtivatin t stay n a task culd lead us t feel less fatigued.
    32. Why des the authr ask s many questins in the first paragraph?
    A. T intrduce a cmmn phenmenn.
    B. T raise sme questins that are appealing.
    C. T lead t the theme and attract attentin.
    D. T shw the authr's cncern f the prblem.
    33. The underlined wrd “fatigue” in the passage culd best be replaced by_______.
    A. excitement B. tiredness C. health D. disability
    34. Which ne is the hypthesis fr why we are ften feel exhausted after ne-day wrk?
    A. We are drawn t thers things we have t d.
    B. Lacking drive t finish a task leads t tiredness.
    C. Smaller amunt f physical activity makes us mre tired.
    D. Better self-cntrl can bst ne's mtivatin t wrk.
    35. Which f the fllwing may Inzlicht agree with?
    A. The persn with strng self-cntrl can get mre reward frm wrk.
    B. The ne wh are less mtivated will be expsed t mre temptatins.
    C. While typing, we use little part f ur muscle, which is mre tiring.
    D. Typing with sme brwsers pen will smetimes makes us mre tired.

At ne pint r anther, yu’ve prbably heard smene speak with cnfidence n a tpic that they actually knw almst nthing abut. This phenmenn is knwn as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
In a set f studies, researchers Justin Kruger and David Dunning asked participants t cmplete tests f their skills in a particular dmain(领域). Then, participants were asked t guess hw well they had dne n the test. 36 This effect was mst prnunced amng participants with the lwest scres n the test.
In ther wrds, if smene knws very little abut a particular tpic, they may nt even knw enugh abut the tpic t realize that their knwledge is limited. Imprtantly, smene may be highly skilled in ne area, but be influenced by the Dunning-Kruger effect in anther dmain. 37
If peple wh knw very little abut a tpic think they’re experts, what d experts think f themselves? Interestingly, Dunning and Kruger fund that althugh experts typically guessed their perfrmance was abve average, they didn’t realize quite hw well they had dne. They ften make a different mistake: 38
What can peple d t vercme the effect? Dunning and Kruger nce had sme f the participants take a lgic test and then cmplete a shrt training sessin n lgical reasning. After the training, the participants were asked t assess hw they’d dne n the previus test. 39 As a result, the participants wh scred in the bttm 25 percent lwered their estimate f hw well they thught they had dne n the initial test.
In shrt, The Dunning-Kruger effect suggests that we may nt always knw as much as we think we d. 40 Hwever, by challenging urselves t learn mre, we can wrk t vercme the effect.
    A. Researchers fund that the training made a difference.
    B. They assume that everyne else is knwledgeable, t.
    C. This happens when peple knw much abut a tpic.
    D. They fund that participants tended t verestimate their abilities.
    E. All f them had an accurate view f their perfrmance.
    F. This means that everyne can ptentially be affected by the Dunning-Kruger effect.
    G. In sme dmains, we may nt knw enugh abut a tpic t realize that we are unskilled.
