The African Children's Choir is made up of children who are 7 to 10 years old from Africa. They have fascinating voices and spirit that amaze the audience everywhere they go!
And they go to a lot of places, all around the world. And not only do they travel a lot, but they perform with some superstar singers and celebrities(名人) for heads of state. But this is not what makes the choir so special.
Like New York's PS22, they do not just sing, but truly put their hearts, souls and bodies into their words. But what is unique about the choir is that it offers hope, education and confidence to children who live in extreme poverty. For example, the kids in the choir are mostly from the poorest countries in the world, such as Uganda. Many children live in one-room homes and walk more than 2 miles to get water for their family. Most of the children have lost one or both of their parents because of wars or diseases.
Through its music and education, the African Children's Choir changes the lives of its children. It allows them to see the world. It gives them hope and confidence. It shows them that everything is possible. The choir even pays for their education through college. In 30 years, it has educated and changed the lives of over 50,000 children.
And, in turn, the children return to their hometowns with new thoughts and new skills to help improve their family and community. These children are truly helping to build a better Africa.
19. What can we learn about the members of the African Children's Choir?
A. They have no parents. B. They are all ten years old.
C. Many of them live a hard life. D. Some of them come from PS22.
20. What is special about the choir?
A. Its positive influence on poor children.
B. Performing together with famous people.
C. Its members truly putting their hearts in words.
D. Its members focusing on singing beautiful songs.
21. Paragraph 4 mainly shows the African Children's Choir _______.
A. makes a lot of money B. has become very popular
C. is very helpful to its members D. helps 50,000 children go to college
22. For what purpose did the author write the passage?
A. To tell an inspiring story
B. To advertise some choirs
C. To introduce a special choir
D. To encourage us to help African children

My daughter is a middle school student who still plays with her American Girl dolls. Dolls have been a huge part of her life ever since she was a baby. When she got her first doll at the age of 5, she spent hours brushing its hair and changing its clothes. Some people think my daughter should stop doing that as a teenager. But I think quite differently.
Considering what else she could be doing, I find playing with dolls seems like a nice choice. It’s better than playing computer games or something alike. I’ve also noticed it doesn’t make any difference to her social life. She has her friends and spends time with them.
Playing with dolls is helpful for my daughter. “When I play with them, ” my daughter told me, “it makes me feel that I can express problems going on in my life and that I’m not the only one who has those problems. They’re in their lives, too, and they have to live with them.” I’m glad she finds a safe place to stay when she faces school test, changeable social groups, and a changing body in middle school.
Moreover, the girl dolls can be encouraging. Most come with an amazing back story. For instance, Luciana is interested in science and technology and wants to become an astronaut. How cool it is to set an example for kids!
So next time, when someone tries to judge my young teen for playing with her dolls, I’ll remember all the ways she benefits from them. And when she grows too large for them, I hope she saves her dolls and brings them out one day in the future so that her own kids can get the benefits of playing with them, even into their teen years.
23. What does the author say about her daughter?
A. She has a lasting interest in dolls.
B. She likes collecting some special dolls.
C. She has got bored with her childhood dolls as a teenager.
D. She spends too much time with dolls instead of her friends.
24. According to Paragraph 2, what does the author think her daughter’s behavior means?
A. Developing her social skills.
B. Doing poorly in school exams.
C. Missing other amazing activities.
D. Avoiding some harmful activities.
25. What did the daughter’s words in Paragraph 3 suggest?
A. Playing with dolls gives her a sense of responsibility.
B. Playing with dolls helps reduce her stress in life.
C. She has problems different from other teenagers.
D. She has been worried about her school life.
26. Who may be Luciana in Paragraph 4?
A. a scientist B. a friend C. a doll D. a girl
D
Americans, especially the millennials(千禧一代), are always glued to their phones. A common day of an average university student in American starts off like this: an alarm clock wakes you up, which is quickly followed by checking social media such as Twitter and Facebook. Once in classes, you are again attracted by your buzzing phone and access to the Internet rather than pay attention to the lecturing professor. Then you have lunch with some friends, only to look up from your screen to realize that no one has said a word in five minutes and instead all are looking at their phones. Once the day ends, you can't help checking all forms of social media again before finally being able to shut your eyes only to repeat this vicious cycle the next day.
Cyberbullying(网络霸凌), a concept unknown before, is now in fashion. Many of the millennials are using the Internet to make jokes about others to extremes. The Internet gives cowards bravery. People feel like their actions and words have no bad results because they cannot see the pain they cause others.
Millennials also tend to think that whatever information shows up on their screens must be taken as truth, whether the source is reliable(可靠的) or not.
Social media is not all bad, however. People are still able to use social media to connect with friends and family who live a great distance away. With a few clicks, someone could make another person smile, or give words of hope and encouragement to a friend in need, or even help repair a broken relationship. Cyberspace is a vortex that is easy to get caught up in, but we must find a balance to keep both feet in reality while travelling across the online world.
27. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 infer?
A. You can't break away from your phone.
B. You decide to get rid of this bad behaviour.
C. You return to going cyberbullying the following day.
D. You are caught in the busy life.
28. What can be learned about the millennials?
A. They often mistake facts for personal opinions.
B. They prefer to communicate face to face.
C. They become brave and reliable.
D. They don't often make their own judgement.
29. Which way of using social media is accepted by the author?
A. Being glued to the phones all the time.
B. Promoting relationships.
C. Losing themselves in the online world.
D. Fighting against others.
30. What's the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To state the ill effects of social media.
B. To prove the benefits of social media.
C. To suggest using the social media wisely.
D. To introduce the functions of phones.
