[2020·新高考山东卷]The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs.Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara.“He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara.“His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one.“I tell you what we can do,” said John.“You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought
it was a good one, too._______________________________________________________

who
Mrs. Meredith;John, Harry, and Clara;Bernard
what
The Meredith family helped Bernard earn money.
where
a small community
when
As the economy was in decline
why
Bernard's father was sick.
Mrs. Meredith and her three children found a good way to help poor Bernard earn money
Love and Kindness
2.feelings(暗线):即谁感觉如何,需要进行合理的推测。
Para.1
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too.
1.What did Mrs. Meredith encourage her children after she heard the good idea?
2.How did the children and Bernard do exactly?
Para.2
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
1.How did poor Bernard sell the popcorn?
2.Did poor Bernard earn money in the end?
Para.1
Para.2
Bernard
文章开头点名主意很好,结尾应围绕着约翰的“好主意”展开,因此结尾“All of this was because of John's bright idea.”
Paragraph 1:When Mrs.Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too.Very soon, the children learnt how to pop the corn and then were busy in doing this “big” thing. At the same time, their mother went out to buy the paper bags that they needed. When she came back, she brought with her Bernard.Bernard felt grateful to all of them for what they had done for him.
Paragraph 2:With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.Much sooner than could be expected, he returned with an empty basket and so much money that he had never seen before. He was so delighted that he could hardly speak, but his bright smiling face spoke for him.For many weeks, every Saturday, the three children would prepare popcorn for Bernard to sell. This little boy therefore could help support his family. All of this was because of John's bright idea.

Having taken part in the interschool storytelling championship for the past two years, I was a shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching content this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I'm sorry. Ms. Sara.” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

(1)________________________________ my classmates and Ms. Sara.(时间状语从句)
(2)________________________________ my classmates and Ms. Sara.(分词作状语)

Soon it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in a nervous voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. Seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. Never had I been so embarrassed in my life. Eventually,I walked off the stages, with all tears in my eyes.
Finally, results were announced after the contest. I did not win any prizes, which was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I regretted being so arrogant. I had learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the famous saying, “Modesty helps one to make progress, but conceit makes one lag behind”.

[2021·青岛市高三统一质量检测] Sarah lived in a big family — four children with three sisters older than her. Father worked hard on the farm all day long to support the family. They had to save every penny to make ends meet.
One winter morning in March, Sarah put on her old spring coat to go out and play. “These buttons don't work,” Sarah said to Mama. Just then, Mama noticed that this coat was too small for Sarah. She promised Sarah that after her sisters left for school, she would check the handmedowns (旧衣服) for a coat that fit.
When the house was quiet, Mama went to the hall closet and pulled out all the old spring coats. But she could not find a suitable one for Sarah-Sylvia's were too big, Susan's too spotted, and Sally's too ragged. The coats were fine for play. But Sarah had no coat for church and town and special occasions. Mama told it to Papa when he came in from the barn (畜棚), after feeding the cows.
Papa sat down at the table. “Are you sure Sarah can't wear a handmedown?” he said. “It's either a new coat or a ragged coat,” Mama said. Papa frowned, staring out at the front yard. “Sarah has never had a new coat,” Mama added.
For a long while, nobody spoke. The fire in the wood stove crackled Sarah looked closely at Papa. Then Papa cleared his throat. “A ragged coat won't do,” he said. “Sarah, are you old enough to take care of a new coat?”“Yes, Papa,” Sarah said. “I'm old enough to do almost anything.” Papa gave her a serious look. “Very well,” he said. “While we are in town today, we'll buy you a coat of your very own.” After they had eaten the soup, they headed for town in Papa's old truck.

[2021·广东省高三第一次模拟] On a freezing morning of December, two police officers were patrolling the streets. Suddenly, the walkietalkie (对讲机) on Alan, one of the officers, rang. “The cake shop near the City Museum has reported a burglary (盗窃案). Please rush to the scene immediately,” said the electronic voice.
The two policemen quickly arrived at the shop, only to find that the scene showed no sign of crimes at all. Curiously, they checked the monitor and found that a thin woman broke open the window and climbed into the store at 5:20 a. m. Instead of searching around, she walked straight into the storage room, stole cheese, chocolate, butter and other ingredients for a cake, and then ran away down the road.
Both policemen felt quite confused about her behavior. One of the shop assistants identified the thief as Clara, a single mother who lived nearby. She has an eightyearold boy to take care of and lives in poverty.
Moments later, the two officers arrived at Clara's house. Bob, another officer, pulled out a gun and was about to break in. But Alan told him to put the gun away and knocked gently.
The door opened and out came a very thin woman. From the outline of her figure, Alan recognized that she was exactly the thief. The woman Clara, immediately understood the situation when she saw the two policemen. She buried her face in her hands and sat down on the floor.
At that very moment, a child's voice broke the silence,“Mom, is anyone coming for my birthday? Invite them in, please.”
After hearing the boy's words, Clara stood up and begged in a low voice, “Officer, I did steal those things, but there's nothing else I could do. It's my baby's birthday, and I've got neither job nor money. Please don't take those things away. I've just used them to make him a cake.”

It seemed I'd done everything I'd ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn't spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.
Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can't read the alphabet(字母表). People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.
By 1928, I'd been wandering(漂泊) for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work-fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. “Elzenia,” I said. “I don't want the kids to know I can't read or write.”
In 1938, one day my boss called me in. “George,” he said, “no one knows those machines like you do. I'd like to promote you.” But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, “Fill out this application and we'll get you a raise.” I couldn't admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn't stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.
One day, a young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It's information about adult education classes, where people can learn to read and write. Now I'm 98. I thought of my friends and neighbors and what they might think if they found out I couldn't read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I've wanted to read. It was high time for action.

“May I assist you?” the clerk asked, after they went inside the clothes store. “Our Sarah needs a good coat,”Papa said. The clerk said, “Small... In small we have brown, blue, and red.”“We'll try the brown one,” Mama said to the clerk. Sarah slid her arms into the sleeves. “I look like a piece of wood,” she mumbled in disappointment. But when she slid the blue coat from its hanger, there was a pink coat. “A pink coat!” Sarah cried. “I want the pink coat. Let me try it!”
The pink coat fit Sarah perfectly, but it seemed that it would only fit one year.“And there's no one to wear it again, which is unwise to waste,”said Papa. Sarah wanted to give it up.“It is her color, though,” Mama said. He looked from the brown coat to the pink coat.“But how can we let Sarah wear a brown coat when she looks like a flower in this one?” Sarah threw her arms around Papa's neck and said happily,“I do look like a flower, don't I ?”“Like a peach blossom in spring,”Papa said.

Dear Jack,
Knowing that you're interested in our school's Innovative Lantern Show, I'm writing to share something about it.
Last Saturday evening, hundreds of lighted lanterns were hanging between the trees on our campus, getting viewers into a fantastic world. Additionally, the variously shaped lanterns were all made of recycled waste, serving as a reminder for us to protect the environment.
The impressive show amazed everyone present. It inspired us to add innovation to our traditional lantern culture, promote our creativity and boost our handson skills.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

Looking into the woman's teary eyes, Alan understood and walked into the house. He looked at the child and said,“Happy birthday to you, kid. And enjoy your cake.”After that, he walked out, dragging Bob with him.“Officer, that woman should be taken to the police station. She should be responsible for her crime.”Alan replied,“Although what Clara did was wrong indeed, she was just a helpless mother. It would be too cruel for us to take away a desperate mother who occasionally made a mistake in front of her child!”
Bob nodded thoughtfully and asked,“What about the things she stole?”“The bill is on me,”Alan volunteered. After returning to the cake shop, he explained the incident to the shop owner and then paid for the stolen materials. Afterwards, Clara took the initiative to go to the police station. What the officer had done made her feel ashamed of her theft and she was determined to mend her way. She said that she would improve her life by her own efforts and would no longer do anything illegal again.

My Career Plan
In my plan, after graduating, I will start my career as a teacher in my hometown. So far, I think teacher is the most suitable job for me since I am not sensitive about either business or government affairs. Most importantly, I am quite sure about my favor and patience towards young people. I enjoy staying with those youthful lives. I'd like to be a companion to them. I really hope that I can become an excellent teacher. This is my career plan.

The young man drove me to an old building. I knew it well—it was where all my children had gone to school. I looked into the classroom to get a look at who I would be going to school with the next day. The students all looked like babies to me. There was a lady in her fifties but most of the rest were in their twenties and thirties. I went back to the school the next day. I'd been inside the building so many times before with my children. That old building looked the same, and it smelled the same. But this time it was different because this time it was going to be my school. First came learning the alphabet, then words. Three months later, I could read something. It was not very exciting, but I loved it.
I'm still going to school. I didn't stop there. After all, now I know why I'm here. I'm here to learn. I'm here to tell the students it's never too late to learn.
