The future doesn’t have to feel depressing, and the next generation may be the best suited to remind us. Around the world, kids are seeing the future as an opportunity to apply their creativity. One of those kids is Gitanjali Rao, who lives in Lone Tree, Colorado and won TIME magazine’s first-ever Kid of the Year award.
“The really exciting thing is that our generation is growing up in a place where we’re seeing problems that have never existed before,” said Rao. “It’s up to us to take control of that opportunity and realize that innovation is a necessity, not an option.”

TIME has been naming a Person of the Year since 1927. In 2019, Greta Thunberg (then 16 years old) became the youngest person ever to receive the award. In 2020, TIME created the Kid of the Year award and chose 15-year-old Rao and four honorees out of 5,000 people under 18 for making a positive impact.
    And Rao certainly is.
l She created a handheld lead detection system inspired by the Flint water crisis.
l She invented a device to measure opioids in your blood (to prevent addiction if you’re taking prescription opioid medication).
l She developed an anti-bullying app called Kindly.
l She’s leading workshops all over the world to help kids become innovators and wrote a book about the process.
Her interests are so varied, and she’s able to turn a problem into something that inspires her to take action, and then she just starts by reading a lot. “I read about resources on the Internet, learn more about the subject and see what connects back to the work I’m doing,” she explained.
There is definitely support behind her. “They allowed me to explore beyond what I thought was the normal,” she said, speaking of her parents. “I’m really fortunate to have parents who let me go after my passions instead of forcing me into something else.”
That passion, mixed with a solid dose of optimism, is what she thinks we need to handle the future. She says that it’s about taking lots and lots of small steps — towards something you’re passionate about, and that’s what she wants to encourage everyone to do. “Find something and go for it, because YOU can make a difference in this world,” Rao said.
    24. What is the necessary quality for the young generation according to Rao?
    A. Creativity. B. Optimism.
    C. Enthusiasm. D. Reliability.
    25. What will Rao do when she becomes interested in a certain issue?
    A. Turn to her parents for help.
    B. Look for similar problems online.
    C. Seek support for her idea.
    D. Search for relevant information.

    26. What can best describe Rao based on the passage?
    A. Diligent and generous. B. Humorous and encouraging.
    C. Positive and innovative. D. Talented and adventurous.
    27. Which is the suitable title for the passage?
    A. New Inventions by a Talented Girl. B. Approaches to Saving the World.
    C. A Girl Winning Kid of the Year Award. D. Qualities Needed to Become an Inventor.

    C
Packing a suitcase (行李箱) well is a challenge. You want the clothes to look good when you take them out of the suitcase.
Travel experts recommend using a layer (层) technique: this means you put the items into the suitcase in several layers. First of all, open the suitcase and create the first layer on the bottom. Take the longer clothes, such as dresses or trousers and lay them flat, with the top part inside the suitcase and the bottom half hanging over the side. Next, place your pajamas, T-shirts and underwear in the suitcase as the second layer. Fill any gaps with toiletries, such as soap and shampoo, wrapped in bags to prevent spills.
The third layer is for clothes that might wrinkle easily such as blouses. Fold these clothes tightly and put them into plastic bags to avoid wrinkles. Place them on top of the second layer. Next, take the legs of the trousers or the end of the dresses that you have left hanging over the edge of the suitcase and fold them back over the top of the other clothes. This will stop your dresses or trousers from getting wrinkled.
There will be some space around the edges of the suitcase for shoes. Do not pack too many: choose one pair that you can wear for most occasions. Shoes can get crushed in the suitcase, so stuff them with socks or toiletries. Wrap the shoes in plastic bags so they will not make the clothes dirty.
If there is some space left on top, add a sweater or any other items that you might need during your journey. For example, if the weather turns cold, it will be easy for you to get your sweater without disturbing your tidy packing. Beware of packing too much into a suitcase. You might cause the locks and zippers to break.
    28. Why is packing a suitcase well a challenge?
    A. You always have to do it in a hurry.
    B. You want to keep clothes in good shape.
    C. You have to pack all you need into it.
    D. You need a good plan before you start.

    29. What do you put in as a second layer?
    A. Longer clothes. B. Dresses.
    C. T-shirts. D. Sweaters.
    30. What are right on the top of the third layer?
    A. A pair of shoes. B. Legs of trousers.
    C. Top part of dresses. D. Socks and toiletries.
    31. Why is a sweater left on top of all other items?
    A. To keep you warm while leaving the packing tidy.
    B. To try to avoid breaking locks and zippers.
    C. To keep all items under it clean and tidy.
    D. To make sure all the space is fully used.

    D
Re-entering the workforce after a long absence is often a difficult path. The longer you’re out, the harder it can be to get back in. For years, companies like Goldman Sachs have offered return-to-work programs as a way to help workers go back into the workforce after a long break. Returnships, as they are often called, offer training and networking opportunities to workers— usually mothers— who’ve been out of the workforce for an extended period of time. More recently, there’s been growing interest from companies in starting this type of program.
Goldman Sachs’ returnship program requires applicants to have been out of the workforce for two years or more. “We knew the interview process would need to look different,” said Kelley Berlin, Grubhub’s chief human resources officer. “We couldn’t view them based on their current technology skills. We had to look at their performance level and potential.”
The first week of Goldman Sachs’ 12-week program focuses on training, followed by an apprenticeship ( 学徒期) in one of the bank’s divisions. The participants are paired with a manager, a coach and previous returnees. On average, the company gets about 1,000 applications yearly for its program and accepts 25 to 30. Roughly 75% of those who go through the program get extended offers elsewhere to become full-time employees. Participants are paid $40 an hour during the returnship and the salaries of the full-time positions offered after the program are $100, 000 or above.

The audio storytelling company Audible started its returnship program during the pandemic (疫情). “We felt that starting during the pandemic would be best because we would be able to support many jobless caregivers and their families caused by the pandemic,” said Anne Emi, Audible’s Chief People Officer. “Knowing that it was very hard for professionals taking caregiving career breaks to re-enter the workforce, we knew it would be much more difficult during the pandemic. But we were so impressed with what our program brought to the
table. In a year or two, we will be growing the class by three times and bringing in 100 apprentices to join the business.”
    32. Why are return-to-work programs organized?
    A. To offer workers chances to re-enter the workforce.
    B. To help companies find more qualified workers.
    C. To provide workers with further training opportunities.
    D. To plan out proper timetables for stay-at-home mothers.
    33. What can we know about Goldman Sachs’ program?
    A. It is easy to be accepted by the program.
    B. Trainees need to work in the bank for 12 weeks.
    C. Few trainees will get employed after the program.
    D. Trainees will be well paid after taking full-time positions.
    34. What may Anne Emi probably think of Audible’s returnship program?
    A. Interesting.
    B. Problematic.
    C. Successful.
    D. Risky.
    35. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Companies Seriously Affected by the Pandemic.
    B. Returnships Send Mothers back to Work.
    C. Workers Get Better Jobs after Training.
    D. More Job Opportunities Appearing.

One day when I was 5 years old, my dad headed for work while my mum drove me to the town for shopping. Soon we got to a supermarket. While my mum was picking up vegetables, I spotted some attractive apples, which looked big and red and smelt pleasant. All of a sudden I had the desire to eat apples. I begged my mum to buy some and she agreed.
After getting all the groceries, we went for a walk in a park in the town and didn’t return until it was close to noon. Upon arriving home, my mum left the bag of apples in the sitting room and went to prepare the lunch in the kitchen. Right there and then I could hardly wait to taste the apples, so I took one and had a big bite even without washing it. However, to my disappointment, it wasn’t as sweet as expected. Luckily, when I tried another, it was satisfying this time. When I was enjoying it, my mum called me to give some apples to our neighbour, Julie, an old lady living close to our home.
Julie lived by herself. She was a kind lady and treated me very well. When my parents had no time to look after me, I would go to hers and she would help take care of me. And she liked chatting and even playing with me. So when my mum asked me to deliver some apples to her, I was very glad to do that.
I found a plastic bag in which to put some apples. But I hesitated just before picking them up. “Some apples are not that delicious. I should send some good ones to Grandma Julie.” I thought. But how could I tell the sweet ones from the rest? I wondered because I had no idea how to find it out just by their appearance.
    Paragraph 1:
Then all at once, a clever idea hit me.

    Paragraph 2:
Returning home from Julie’s home, I told my mum what I had done with the apples.

    读后续写:
    Para. 1:
Then all at once, a clever idea hit me. I could take a bite of each apple to make sure the apples for Julie were all sweet! Once I had the idea, I got down to doing that. I tasted six apples in all, finding one not delicious. So I put the rest into the plastic bag and went to Julie’s home. As usual, she welcomed me warmly. “Hey, little Mary, come in. Have you got some gifts for me?” she said with a sweet smile. I told her that we had some apples for her. With this, I put the bag of apples on her table and went back home.
    Para. 2:
Returning home from Julie’s home, I told my mum what I had done with the apples. It was at the very moment that I noticed my mum’s eyes widened. Without a word, she picked up the bag of the remaining apples that I hadn’t tasted, took my hand and rushed out. When we stepped into Julie’s home, she was just looking confused about the apples I had brought to her. After hearing my mum explain the whole thing, Julie couldn’t help but burst into laughter and give me a hug. Instead of losing temper at my behaviour, she just felt happy about the reason behind the bitten apples.
