Most adults firmly believe that as kids reach their teens, they start to take crazy risks
that get them in trouble. Do teenagers simply love taking all risks much more than adults? A recent study suggests otherwise. Scientists designed a simple experiment involving 33 teenagers and three other age groups.
In the experiment, the researchers tried to distinguish between two very different
kinds of risk-taking. The first they called a willingness to take known risks (when the probability of winning is clear) and the second they called a willingness to take unknown risks (when the possibility of success is uncertain).
The study offered participants the opportunity to play two kinds of games. They had
the chance to win money, with one game offering a known risk and the other offering an unknown risk. On each round of the game, each participant had to choose between taking a sure $5 and known or unknown risks of choices. In the known risk condition, people always knew the exact chance of winning more money, from as low as 13% to as high as
75%. In the unknown risk condition, researchers did not reveal the exact chances of
    winning.
What the scientists found was really quite surprising. It turned out that the average teenager was very hesitant when risks were known- more careful than college students or parents-aged adults, and about as careful as grandparent-aged adults. This means that when the risks were known, teenagers were not risky in their behavior at all. Only when the risks
were unclear did teenagers choose them more often than other groups. Under those kinds
of conditions, they were much more willing to take a risk than any other group.
The research, published in Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests
that adults should probably focus more energy on trying to educate teenagers about risks than limiting them. Teenagers who understand the risks associated with a decision are more likely to be careful in their behavior.。
    8. The two kinds of games differed in whether_ .
    A. the risks were willing taken B.the choices they can make are enough
    2022 年春学期高二年级期中校际联考英语试卷 第 3 页 共 8 页
    C. the participants could be careful D. the chances of winning were clear
    9. When facing known risks, teenagers tended to be .
    A. ambitious B. anxious C. cautious D. curious
    10. Which group in the study were more likely to take unknown risks?
    A.Teenage participant B. College students
    C. Parent aged students D. Grandparent-aged adults
    11. According to the study, parents should
    A. set age limits on dangerous activities B. encourage children to be conservative
    C. help teens know more about risks D. allow teens to make their own decisions
    D
Now is the time to act on climate change. We need to cut carbon emissions (排放), and knowing this, it is easy to be pessimistic. Strangely, I抦 feeling the opposite. And that抯 mostly because of one factor: Batteries. It isn抰 obvious but over the last decade or so, just as we抳e watched our computers get faster and screens get thinner, batteries have greatly improved too.
According to the European Patent Office, the number of battery patents filed grew by
an average of 14 percent every year between 2005 and 2018. Energy storage is getting better and better, as more companies are discovering new chemistry and processes to make them work more efficiently.
And the results of all of this work are astonishing. Energy density梩he amount of
power that can be stored in the same sized battery梙as doubled in the last decade. And the costs of batteries have fallen a lot too.
Brilliantly, because electric batteries are improving so noticeably, we can already see
the results. Last September, 15 percent of all new vehicle registrations(登记,注册) were pure electric vehicles. So the change is starting to happen.
It抯 conceivable that in the not-too-distant future, alongside other essentials in our
homes like a boiler and a fuse box, we might also have an enormous battery in the garage. This would take power from the grid (电网) or maybe even solar panels on the roof, and power appliances and lights in our homes at the times when demand for electricity is high.
So, given how much technology has improved batteries over the last decade, I can抰
help but be strangely optimistic about the future. Batteries may not be as flashy (显眼的) as phones, rockets or other new technologies, but when it comes to technology to fight climate change, they抮e definitely leading the charge.
    12. What is the author抯 attitude towards cutting carbon emissions?
    2022 年春学期高二年级期中校际联考英语试卷 第 4 页 共 8 页
    A. Doubtful B.Unclear C. Favorable D. Anxious
    13. What is the possible result of batteries? great improvement?
    A. It抣l make people use electricity at will.
    B. It抣l make them more environment-friendly.
    C. It will slow the development of pure electric vehicles.
    D. It抣l cause the prices of batteries to rise.
    14. What does the underlined word 揷onceivable? in paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Unacceptable B. Astonishing C.Unreliable D.Possible
    15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. How Battery Technology Can Save the Planet
B.Now Is the Time to Act on Climate Change
C.Carbon Emissions Result in Climate Change
    D. How Much Technology Has Improved Batteries
