An advance in electronic publishing could make the book you are reading seem as dated as a silent film. Publishers are releasing books with added soundtracks and musical accompaniments.
The noise in the first multimedia books released in Britain include rain hitting a window in a Sherlock Holmes tale. Works by Oscar Wilde and Rudyard Kipling are also available. When the plot of a book reaches a climax, background music will create tension. In America, works by Shakespeare and Jane Austen have already been released with music and background noise so that, for example, readers can hear tea cups clinking in Mr. Darcy's garden as they read Pride and Prejudice.
Supporters argue that sound effects are the next logical development for e-books and will add excitement for younger readers. Critics, however, will argue that the noises will ruin the simple pleasure of enjoying the imagination required to read a book.
Caroline Michel, chief executive of the literary agency PFD, said, "Concentration now is such that people have split computer screens where they may be watching television and replying an email at the same time. If that's what the market wants, then we should respond to the market.
Booktrack's sound effects work by figuring out the user's reading speed. Each time you “turn” a page, the software reassesses(重新评估) where you have reached in the text and times the sounds to play accordingly. If the soundtrack is not in agreement with the words, a click on any word will re-set it.
Some authors fear a soundtrack could destroy the peace and quiet of libraries and ruin the pleasure of reading. David Nicholls, author of One Day, said, "This sounds like the opposite of reading. I have enough trouble reading an e-book because I'm constantly disturbed (干扰)by emails and so I've given up on it for the time being.
Stuart MacBride, the crime writer whose novel Shatter the Bones was an e-book bestseller, sells 18% of his books as electronic downloads. He said, "If I'm reading, I will do the noises in my head. I don't need someone to tell me what cutting a tree sounds like. That would upset me.
4. The e-book soundtrack is intended________.
A. to make readers focus on the story
B. to help readers with unknown vocabulary
C. to strengthen readers' impression of characters
D. to add tension when the book reaches an exciting point
5. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 5 refers to________.
A. the soundtrack
B. the speed of reading
C. the software
D. the required time
6. What's Stuart MacBride' s attitude to soundtracks?
A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Unconcerned. D. Disrespectful

B. a personal diary
C. a science textbook
D. a newspaper report

Time and how we experience it have always puzzled us. Physicists have created fascinating theories, but their time is measured by a pendulum (钟摆) and is not psychological time, which leaps with little regard to the clock or calendar. As someone who understood the distinction observed, “When you sit with a nice girl for two hours it seems like a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove, a minute seems like two hours.”
Psychologists have long noticed that larger units of time, such as months and years, fly on swifter wings as we age. They also note that the more time is structured with schedules and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass. For example, a day at the office flies compared with a day at the beach.
Expectation and familiarity also make time seem to flow more rapidly. Almost all of us have had the experience of driving somewhere we’ve never been before. Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, with no real idea of when we’ll arrive, we experience the trip as if lasting a long time. But the return trip, although exactly as long, seems to take far less time. The novelty of the outward journey has become routine.
When days become as identical as beads (小珠子)on a string, they mix together, and even months become a single day. To counter this, try to find ways to interrupt the structure of your day-to stop time, so to speak.
Learning something new is one of the ways to slow the passage of time. One of the reasons the days of our youth seems so full and long is that these are the days of learning and discovery. For many of us, learning ends when we leave school, but this doesn’t have to be.
8. What is the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 is used to show?
A. Physical theory has nothing to do with the true sense of time.
B. Physical time is different from psychological time.
C. Time should not be measured by a pendulum.
D. Psychological time is quite puzzling.
9. Which of the following will make you feel time flies faster?
A. A day spent exploring something unknown.
B. Staying with a person who you dislike.
C. A day packed with appointments to handle.
D. Driving to a new place for the first time.
10. What does “novelty” in Paragraph 3 probably means?
A. Amusement.
B. Excitement.
C. Imagination.
D. Unfamiliarity.
11. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why time flies and how to slow it down psychologically.
B. To describe how we experience time psychologically.
C. To show the different ideas of physicists and psychologists on time.
D. To give various explanations about time.

Over the phone, Jack's mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
“Jack, did you hear me?"
“Oh, sorry, Mum. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack replied.
“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life,' she said.
As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mum stopped by to see the old house next door one more time.
Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture. Jack stopped suddenly ...
“What's wrong, Jack?” his Mum asked.
“The box is gone," he said.
“What box?" Mum asked
"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever told me was the thing he valued most. Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.
Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. 'Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days,' the note read. Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack s hands shook as he read the note inside.
"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life.'
Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved (雕刻): 'Jack, Thanks for your time!- Harold Belser.'
12. What did Mr. Belser do when Jack was a child?
A. He played the role of a father.
B. He taught Jack school subjects.
C. He sponsored Jack for education.
D. He brought Jack longer memories.
13. Why was Jack deeply impressed with the gold box?
A. It belonged to Mr. Belser. B. It remained a mystery to him.
C. It was his childhood memory. D. It was worth a lot of money.
14. What does the underlined word “retrieved” in Paragraph 11 probably mean?
A. Take over. B. Reach for. C. Pull out. D. Get back.
15. What can we learn from the story?
A. A gold pocket watch is the best gift.
B. Good company deserves treasuring.
C. Loss of father influences a boy deeply.

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze; it felt as though my soul departed (离开) my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the name list posted on the wall of the locker room; my heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine. John, Bryce, Ro, I thought, everybody is on here except me. At that moment, I froze; I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team but I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. “Hey coach, are you sure that the name list you posted is correct?” I asked anxiously.
“Yes. Sorry if you did not make it this year. There is always next year,” the coach replied without the slightest bit of regret.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears building in my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. As soon as I walked out, I saw my friends crowding into the locker room to look at the team list. I heard them shouting and laughing as I slowly walked away, every one of them jumping around with excitement after seeing that they made the team.
I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. I trudged (步履艰难) through the rest of school; walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100-pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day; everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the back of the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道) around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being one of the only people in our friend group to not make the team.

【47题答案】
【答案】I saw my father’s red car pull up near the school lot. I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, played the radio, and started driving home. And soon he noticed my gloomy face, and asked me what was wrong. “Nothing. Well, it’s just that all my friends made the school team. Everyone! Except me…” I stammered. “Well, what are you going to do about it?” he asked. Surprised, I didn’t know what to say. Nobody was going to give me a spot on that team. I would have to earn it. I decided to train for my goal of making the team. After all, I thought, hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
After almost a year of training, I tried out for my seventh-grade team. “Step, dribble, shoot,” I said to myself, “You got this!” After the tryout, I felt confident and congratulated myself. Regardless of the outcome, I knew that I had worked hard and learned something about mental toughness. The next day, I found out I made the team; seeing my name printed in large bold letters felt as though all my dreams came true in one wondrous moment. The greater the effort, the sweeter the reward, and by making the team, I had officially made a turnaround.
