    一、阅读单选
Spending almost a full day in the car with a 70-year-old woman could be boring. However, for a 15-year-old girl, it was a great memory for many reasons. During the trip, we discussed anything we had wondered about in life. And I learned a lot I had never expected to.
I learned that we shouldn’t take ourselves seriously and that not everyone has to get “old and boring”. She is probably one of the coolest, funniest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. In boring moments (时刻), she never fails to tell one of her famous jokes. But when you need a shoulder to cry on, she is there to comfort you. She taught me that “Laughter is the best medicine”.
She never brings her phone, and she is okay with it. That hasn’t stopped her from shopping and talking with her family online. She doesn’t take pictures of everything she sees.
From now on, I plan on accepting the fact that I don’t need to stay connected with social media (社交媒体) all the time. Even though I don’t use a mobile phone, I can also be better at communicating with people.
There are so many things you can learn from someone older and wiser than you. You don’t need to ask for advice, just slow down and enjoy the conversation. You’ll be surprised at how amazing it is.

Turkey was proud of his looks. Every time he walked past the other animals, he would show off his feathers(羽毛)and say, “I am so beautiful. Move out of my way!”
The other animals thought Turkey was too proud. They decided to give him a lesson, so Fox wrote a note to invite Turkey to a dance party. Turkey was so pleased. When the sun went down, he got to Fox’s home. Seeing Turkey, all the animals bowed and cheered.
Just at that time, a beautiful peacock(孔雀)showed up. When Turkey saw the beautiful feathers of the peacock, he became speechless. The other animals began to laugh. “I look like a fool.” thought Turkey. He ran out of the house as quickly as he could.
And then, no one saw Turkey for several days. Everyone began to feel bad about what they did. They looked for Turkey everywhere. They just wanted to teach him to be humble. They didn’t want to hurt his feelings. Finally, they found Turkey in an old tree. He looked quite sad.
Peacock flew to Turkey and said, “Your friends are worried about you. They feel sorry for you” “We are sorry for the joke we played on you, Turkey.” the animals said. “I am sorry I was so proud.” replied Turkey.

Do you still hug your parents? How do you feel when you hug them? When do you need a hug the most?
It was a cold November morning several years ago. My alarm clock had just gone off, but I was having trouble getting out of bed. My dad had died a few weeks before. I felt weighed down by sadness and depression.
Tough and strong, my dad had worked so hard all of his life to support us. He would sometimes shout at my brothers and me, but I always knew that he loved me. Still, he had been raised (养育) in a traditional way and raised us that way too. I couldn’t remember, for example, ever being hugged by him.
After my mom and grandma passed away, my dad moved into grandma’s home. I was so happy to have him close by. I would often visit him and just talk with him about life. But we still seldom touched and never hugged. Finally his own health began to rapidly fail and within a few months he left us. It was a cold morning when we had his service (追悼会), but I was too cold inside myself to feel it. I couldn’t remember when we’d had our last hug.
I sighed (叹气) and got out of my bed. I turned on the lights and walked into the hallway. I saw my son Jim walking down the hall to meet me. Suddenly, he opened his arms and gave me a heart-felt hug. And just as he did, I heard my dad’s voice deep inside of me say, “Joey, this hug is from me!” I cried and smiled at the same time. In that moment, in the place where heart, mind, and spirit all meet, I felt loved. I felt loved by my dad. I felt loved by life.

It seems like only yesterday since I first started school in the Czech (捷克) Republic. It was a totally new country for me—a place where I was only supposed to stay for one year as an exchange student (交换生).
I still remember I was late that morning, as I got off at the wrong metro station (地铁站). I felt ashamed when I sent a text to my counselor (指导老师) that I would be late. After she picked me up at the station, she said, “Don’t worry, Linda. It’s fine to be late by just a few minutes. The teacher will understand.”
Later, as I walked to the classroom, my English teacher taught me some basic Czech sentences so I could introduce myself to my classmates.
The next moment was probably the most embarrassing of my life. I can still picture myself standing in front of 30 strangers and introducing myself in poor Czech. I wasn’t even sure whether they would understand me or not.
Nevertheless (然而), many of them came to my desk during the break and tried to make friends with me. They even went for a walk with me around the school after lunch.
Now, I’ve been studying in this country for three years. Every time I look back to my first day of senior high, I always wish that I wasn’t so shy. Though my new life didn’t start easily, I was so lucky to have my new classmates there to help and talk to me.
