For years I wanted a flower garden. I would spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together. But then we had Matthew, Marvin, Helen, and the twins, Alisa and Alan. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight (拮据的), as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I'd have to say, "Do you see a money tree in the yard? Money doesn't grow on trees, you know."
Finally, all got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.
Then, one spring morning, on Mother's Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow (垂柳), because I saw things blowing around on all is branches. Then I put my glasses on — and couldn't believe what I saw.
There was a money tree in my yard!
I went to have a look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. There was also a note among them, "Thank you for your time, Mom. We love you."
Later, my children bought me tools, a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.
That was three years ago. My garden's now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and take care of my flowers, I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they're right there with me.
I live in a city where winters are long and cold, and summers are too short. But every year now, when winter sets in, I look out of my window and think of the flowers, I'll see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes — every time.
I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

It's the year 2021. So where are all the flying cars? The large majority of people still get to work and school in boring, ground-bound cars. Not to mention buses, trains and bikes. Yet some still dream of a day when we can soar above the traffic on the ground.
In Singapore in 2019, the company Volocopter demonstrated (演示) a flying taxi. An electric engine powers the craft (飞行器), and it doesn't need a runway. A pilot flew the test model. But in the near future, these helicopter-like vehicles will be able to fly by themselves while carrying two or more passengers and their things.
If some people traveled in flying taxis, there would be fewer cars on the roads, thus reducing traffic there. In the 3D space of the air, vehicles can move around each other without bridges or tunnels (隧道) or extra lanes. The taxis could also take off and land on rooftops, freeing up parking lot spaces on the ground. What's more, flying is fun. Wouldn't it be cool to move rapidly through the sky every day on your way to work or school?
However, there are quite a few good reasons why we don't already have flying cars. The famous inventor Elon Musk runs the rocket company Space X and electric car company Tesla Motors. So he seems like the perfect person to make flying cars a reality. But he said, "If the sky was full of cars flying all over the place, it would affect how things look. It would be noisier and there would be a greater probability of something falling on your head." And aircraft crashes would be more serious than car crashes.
Musk thinks building lots of tunnels underground is a safer way for future transportation. He even has a company working on this idea: The Boring Company. (The name is a play on words. "Boring" means "drilling a hole" and "uninteresting".) What do you think? Are flying cars or taxis a good idea? Or should we find other ways to solve the world's transportation problems?
36.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The appearance of a flying taxi.
B.An introduction of the company Volocopter.
C.A flying taxi test model and its coming future.
D.A personal experience of taking a flying taxi.
37.What advantages can flying cars bring about?
①Having less traffic on roads. ②Making daily life more interesting.
③Having more parking lot spaces. ④Making it easier to carry more passengers.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
38.What does the underlined word "crashes" most probably mean?
A.Diseases. B.Pollution. C.Shortages. D.Accidents.
39.What business does the Boring Company do?
A.Sending up rockets. B.Building underground tunnels.
C.Producing flying cars. D.Developing 3D building Apps.
40.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Do you really want a flying car?
B.Why are flying cars a perfect idea?
C.Can we make noiseless flying cars?
D.How is the flying car developed?

Bacteria Show New Ways to Recycle Plastic
Recently, researchers have reported on new ways to break down different kinds of plastic. The new development could lead to easier, high-quality recycling, and help deal with harmful plastic pollution.
The world is drowning (淹没) in plastic, but only about 9% of plastic products are ever recycled. Every year, over 7,720 billion kilograms of plastic finds its way into the world's oceans. But bacteria may help recycle, even when humans don't. Bacteria are tiny living things — so small that you need a microscope to see them. Bacteria feed themselves in many different ways. Some bacteria can "eat" other things by changing the chemicals in those things into something that will help the bacteria grow.
The secret to this is enzymes (酶). Bacteria use enzymes to cause chemical changes. Enzymes can work like a pair of scissors, breaking apart other materials.
Most people know about PET plastic. It's used in water and soda bottles. About 63.5 billion kilograms are produced every year. Most PET is thrown away, but even when it's recycled, it can't be made into new bottles. Usually it's turned into products like carpets.
In 2012, in some decaying (腐烂的) leaves, scientists discovered an enzyme called LCC that slowly breaks apart PET plastic. Years later, scientists working at the French company Carbios chose LCC from nearly 100,000 enzymes. It was the best at breaking down PET.
But the scientists wanted to improve LCC. They studied the enzyme and the way it attacked the PET. By testing thousands and thousands of small changes to the enzyme, they came up with a new kind of LCC. The new kind can eat through PET very quickly and it can even survive (存活) at higher temperatures.
The process turns the PET plastic back into the materials that it was made from. Those materials can then be used again to make new bottles or other products.
The researchers tested their new LCC against the original (原先的) enzyme, and were impressed with the results. When the conditions were just right, the new enzyme was able to break up 90% of the PET in just 10 hours. The original enzyme took about 20 hours and only broke up half of the PET.
41.What can we learn about bacteria?
A.They can be seen without microscopes.
B.They can break apart other materials directly.
C.They use enzymes to cause physical changes in things.
D.They are tiny creatures that feed on unusual forms of "food".
42.LCC to enzyme is like ________.
A.key to door B.right to left C.rose to flower D.egg to chick
43.What can LCC do to PET plastic?
A.It can make PET plastic much harder than before.
B.It can make PET plastic no longer a serious pollutant.
C.It can change PET plastic into tiny living things.
D.It can prevent PET plastic from breaking down.
44.Thanks to LCC, PET plastic could be recycled by ________.
A.being turned back into the materials it was made from
B.being thrown away in some decaying lcaves
C.being remade into a new kind of soda
D.being put under high temperatures
45.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A.It's very expensive to get LCC from the decaying leaves.
B.With LCC, PET plastic will be used more widely in making products.
C.More and more PET plastic find its way into the oceans because of LCC.
D.The original enzyme can break down the PET plastic more quickly than LCC.
