Her death knocked me for six. I knew it was coming and we had talked about it—but nothing prepared me for actually not having her in my life every day. The thing was, while we only knew each other for a short period of time, she had a huge impact on me. When I got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, I made a whole new group of friends. Rachael was up there with the best of them. She understood exactly what I was going through, she shared my fears and was always there at 3 am to reassure me. She was my rock. After Rachael died, I had a nervous breakdown. I hit numerous brick walls in the weeks and months that followed. My cancer was progressing and I fell into a dark place. I pushed it away but ignored the terror of it all and inevitably it all came crashing down around me. Great sorrow hit me when I least expected. Her death felt like a bad dream. The emotional bit aside, one of the things I found really hard was to actually accept she died. Rachael hoped that by starting the conversation around cancer, she could help other women avoid getting cancer too. It was her absolute determination and bravery at helping to break down taboos (禁忌) that will live on for generations to come. Rachael showed me how to live with cancer. Even in her darkest days she was determined to show that cancer couldn’t take her over. She helped remind me to get busy living with cancer rather than worry about dying of it. She was in the bottom of my heart forever.4.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?A.I was beaten six times.B.Her death gave me the strength.C.She was knocked down and died.D.Her death made me very shocked.5.Why did the author hit the brick walls?A.Because she wanted to end up her life.B.Because she couldn’t stand the pain of cancer.C.Because she had been suffering from nightmares.D.Because she was too sorrowful to accept Rachael’s death.6.What is Rachael’s wish?A.To help women fight against fear.B.To assess women’s conversational skills.C.To prevent other women from getting cancer.D.To inspire sick people to hope for their future.7.Which of the following best describes Rachael?A.Optimistic. B.Weak.C.Humorous. D.Demanding.CIf the three Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) is a guideline to save the planet, garbage-sorting is where the efforts start. Since May 1, Beijing has started to carry out mandatory garbage-sorting in new efforts to better protect the environment. Under the new regulation, residents are required to classify household waste into four categories: kitchen, recyclable, hazardous and other waste. People who fail to sort their garbage properly can be fined from 50 to 200 yuan, reported Xinhua. Some residential communities in Beijing have introduced rewards to encourage residents to sort their garbage. According to Xinhua, residents can earn points by classifying their domestic waste correctly and then exchange the points they accumulate for daily necessities such as soap.Garbage-sorting practices have reached over 70 percent of housing estates in 18 cities, including Shanghai, Xiamen and Hangzhou, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Shanghai first enacted a mandatory garbage-sorting regulation in July 2019 and has had a 90 percent compliance (服从) rate among its housing estates.According to a report by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage-sorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbage-sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are completely sorting their waste, the report noted. According to Xinhua, it’s partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. Also, some previous garbage regulations didn’t include fines for people who failed to obey them.“It’s a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage-sorting,” Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily, “Aside from China, many countries like Germany, Spain and Britain, also ask people to sort waste into specific categories. In Japan, there is a fixed time for the sorting of each kind of garbage.”8.What can we learn about the new regulation in Beijing?A.It hasn’t been put into use yet.B.Residents can sort the garbage as they like.C.People can get money if they classify their domestic waste correctly.D.Those who can’t sort the garbage as the new rule requires shall be fined.9.What’s the problem in garbage-sorting in China?A.Most people are unaware of its importance in protectingenvironment.B.Some people don’t want to take the trouble to sort the garbage.C.Only residents in big cities can sort the trash correctly.D.The government doesn’t have enough money to support garbage-sorting.10.What can we infer from Liu Jianguo’s words?A.It’s difficult to carry out garbage-sorting in China.B.Some laws in garbage-sorting are needed.C.People in developed countries can better sort the garbage.D.We should learn from Japan.11.What’s the best title of the passage?A.Garbage-sorting, a new start in ChinaB.New regulations in BeijingC.Argument on garbage-sortingD.How to sort domestic garbageDNowadays, learning Braille (盲文) is something of a dying art. With thousands of computer programs and other media now available, fewer kids are learning to read Braille and most of them are learning Braille by listening. In the United States, less than 10% of the 1.3 million people who are legally blind are Braille readers. However, learning Braille offers students much more than just a way to get information. Listening to information does not teach students how to spell or write well. These skills are better taught by actually reading. This is particularly true when we know that Braille users often are more independent, have a higher level of education and better employment opportunities. Learning to read and write Braille requires lots of practice, which can become dull. This is what the company Lego, which is making Braille Bricks to help blind students learn to read and write, is dealing with. We strongly believe the Bricks can help increase the level of interest in learning Braille.Instead of the grid (网格) of raised dots normally found on top of Legos, Braille Bricks use the dot groups of the Braille alphabet. This allows the bricks to be “read”, but they still click together like normal Legos. Braille is often written with a special machine called a Brailler. If a student makes the wrong letter using the Brailler, it can’t really be fixed, since the letter is punched (打孔) into paper. Legos, on the other hand, are lots of fun to play with. If a student makes a mistake, fixing it is as easy as moving or changing a brick. The company is trying the Bricks out with teachers and blind students in schools. Teachers report that students enjoy the Bricks and quickly invent games and fun ways to use them. On Lego’s new Braille Bricks, which are planned to hit commercial stores in the near future, Braille is also translated into numbers and letters allowing parents and educators to follow along.12.What has made Braille used less in recent years?A.The lack of its actual use.B.The hard learning process.C.The application of digital technology.D.The decline in the number of the blind.13.What does the author stress about Braille in Paragraph 1?A.Its replacements. B.Its improvements.C.Its shortcomings. D.Its importance.14.What can we say about Lego’s Braille Bricks?A.They are new reading systems.B.They help the blind in a fun way.C.They work like a special machine.D.They come from the Braille alphabet.15.What does the company expect of its Braille Bricks?A.They’ll reach the consumers soon.B.They’ll teach blind students new games.C.They’ll lighten the burden on teachers.D.They’ll be translated into other languages.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The WHO said that 80% of the world’s teens don’t get enough exercise to live healthy lives. The report was based on research done with students aged 11 to 17 in 146 different countries. 16. It’s a pity that not much has changed since then, as the WHO reported. Doctors say 60 minutes of exercise daily is needed for teens to build up their bone and muscle strength. It’s also hugely important for the health of the heart and lungs.17. Besides, more and more research is showing that exercise doesn’t just help the body, but also the brain, improving thinking, test scores, and school grades. 18. They are also very different between boys and girls. In the US, for example, 64% of boys were not active enough, compared to 80% of girls. South Korea was the country with the lowest activity levels—91% of the boys and 97% of the girls didn’t get enough exercise. One big reason for the lack of activity in today’s teens is technology, such as smartphones, computers and TVs. Many teens find it hard to pull themselves away from them. 19. So the WHO warns that teens need to do less playing in the digital world, and more playing in the real world. Teens should take part in sports, whether on official teams or just playing around on the playground. 20 For many people, walking or biking to school is one way to make that happen. It’s very important for young people to build these habits now, because the positive effects of those habits can carry through into adult life. A.Exercise benefits you academically.B.Activity levels vary from country to country.C.The WHO has spared no effort in the research.D.Such inactivity can severely affect their growth.E.Exercise can also be built into a normal day’s activities.F.Regular activity can help them control their weight,too.G.The WHO has been studying teen activity levels since 2001.第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Have you ever noticed how the way you feel about yourself sometimes depends on whether or not you get confirmation of your value from others? Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching.
