He felt like these patients were his own families.“The only way I could take was to get on my motorcycle,” said Witt, who failed to get to the hospital in his truck since the parts of the roads were closed off or impassable in big vehicles. “I had to avoid where the fire had spread to,” he said.By the time he arrived, the fire was reaching the parking lot. The hospital already smelled with a lot of smoke and he wanted to move everybody to safety. With the hospital staff’s help, Witt managed to evacuate all his eight patients into an ambulance that rushed them to a nearby hospital. Even though Witt had done more than enough, he decided to follow the ambulance onto the freeway to make sure the patients would be made to the hospital.“At one point, there was some fire and live wires on the freeway,” Witt said. “After getting far away from the fire, I said to the ambulance driver, ‘I don’t know if it’s the most scary thing I’ve seen but close to it.’”After sending the patients to safety, Witt then went back to check on his home, which was burned to the ground by the time he got back. D.Complaining.CSam is a fourth-year student at Harvard Medical School, but poetry is still a big part of his life, now with a new teacher,Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work. Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet. “Poetry is in every encounter(邂逅)with my patients. I think healing is really in a very great way about poetry. And if we do anything when we’re with our patients,we’re really immersing(使沉浸于)ourselves in their stories, really hearing their voices. And,certainly, that’s what a poem does,”he said. Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today:humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that,he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents(住院医生). He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap. Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said, “I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest.” Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do,though.Rafael said,“I was afraid of how people might judge me,actually. In the medical profession,as many people know,we must always put the emergency first. But,you know, that kind of treatment,if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer. Don’t we still have a role as healers there?”In a poem titled “Health”,Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy. He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.8.What do we know about Rafael Campo?A.He works as a doctor.B.He is under medical care.C.He is a literature professor.D.He knows little about poetry.9.What does the author try to show in Paragraph 2?A.The importance of medical training.B.The effect of poetry in medical treatment.C.The similarity involved in poetry and medical work.D.The present relationship between patients and doctors.10.What does Andrea Schwartz think of poetry?A.It comforts patients’ family.B.It contributes to medical work.C.It has nothing to do with doctors.D.It keeps doctors away from patients.11.What is Rafael Campo’s view on poetry?A.It requires a lot of spare time.B.It can provide a useful tool for doctors.C.It has little effect on patients’ conditions.D.It should be included in emergency treatments.DNot many organisms can survive in this severe environment, the Sahara Desert, where daytime temperatures can reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit. But an insect called the Saharan silver ant grows well. They rush out onto the sand from their protected nests to gather up the bodies of insects that have died from the heat.“The hotter the day, the more insect bodies they will find, and the more food they will have.” said Sarah Pfeffer, an animal behaviorist at Ulm University in Germany. She says that to avoid sinking into the Saharan sand, where they could meet the same fate as their lunch, silver ants have to be fast.To document just how quickly the ants move, Pfeffer and her colleagues set up high-speed cameras above a channel between the entrance to the hungry ants’ nest and a food source. The researchers recorded top speeds approaching 35 inches per second.“But if you really look at how big the animals are and you calculate the body length per second, you will come up with a walking speed that is an astonishing 108 body-length per second.”That figure makes them the fastest known ant on the planet. By comparison, cheetahs(猎豹)top out at about 16 body lengths per second. The videos showed how the ants achieve such amazing speeds. As they accelerate, their leg movements become synchronized(同步的). They increase their running length by bringing all six feet off the sand at once, which Pfeffer describes as a gallop. “Really all legs are lifted from the ground. They are in the air, but it’s not jumping. It’s a very smooth run that they have.”A closely related ant called Cataglyphis fortis only reaches about 24 inches per second, or two thirds of the silver ant’s max.The Saharan silver ants’ speeds may be impressive, but two insects are even faster. The California coastal mite (螨虫) and the Australian tiger beetle, both of which also grow well at near-deadly temperatures. It seems that to beat the heat, it pays to be fleet.12.What does the underlined word “they”in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.The insects.B.The silver ants.C.Pfeffer and her colleagues.D.The high-speed cameras.13.How long is a Saharan silver ant?A.About 0.14 inches. B.About 0.08 inches.C.About 0.22 inches. D.About 0.32 inches.14.How do the ants accelerate while running?A.By jumping smoothly.B.By lifting all their legs.C.By sinking into the sand.D.By flying in the air.15.Why does the author mention another two insects in the last paragraph?A.To introduce two speedy insects.B.To present the near-deadly environment.C.To show high temperature makes fast speed.D.To indicate silver ants rank third in speed.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Teach Children the Value of MoneyAs we’re moving towards a more cashless society and real pocket money is becoming increasingly unpopular, children increasingly no longer understand the value of physical money and simple tasks such as working out how many coins are needed to buy a toy or sweets will become out-of-use. Education around money management and establishing healthy money habits at a young age have become even more vital.16. Start with planning an activity together and then define a budget. Then, research what things you will buy, work out which items may be better to buy. As you carry out each part of the activity, make sure to save all the receipts, and then evaluate if you managed to stay within, or broke your budget. 17. Giving your children or encouraging them to suggest a regular chore can be rewarded with some pocket money.18. For example, 14-year-olds are often making their own beds, so introducing a reward for such a “chore” is not a good idea, however, emptying the dishwasher might be just right for a nine-year-old. These types of chores will help them to get an understanding of earning money and the relationship between time, effort and money. Educate children through encouragement by paving the way for them to act on their own curiosity and interest.19. Coming up with and doing activities or day-to-day tasks together with your children, is not only much more enjoyable for your children, but it also helps them to become more confident and decisive about making their own decisions about savings, interest rates, or allowances.20. That is bound to pave the way to breaking the trend of financial illiteracy. A.That is one of the most important factors for learning.B.Involve them in everyday money management activities.C.This can be done with real-money or a digital piggy bank.D.Giving your child regular pocket money, big enough to cover basic wants.E.They will become more financially independent and wiser to online spending.F.Such a chore beyond what is considered to be done at a certain age is the best.G.This practice of setting a budget is very useful and fun for both parents and children.第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。Ice and snow were beating the window and the wind almost swept everything away outside. As a fifteen-year survivor of breast cancer, she had suffered two heart attacks when advanced cancer was found in her lung. The doctor told me sadly, “She has a few days, maybe a week. Her heart is weak and unstable.”Mom had struggled to raise three daughters while holding a full-time job, yet worked hard to maintain a warm home for her family. My plan for Mom’s final days was simple:she would live with love, and die with grace.I took Mother to my home, small but comfortable, which was a heaven to four cats and a dog. The animals had the run of my house. I equipped the bedroom with an electric hospital bed and an oxygen machine, which frightened the cats. I’d moved their furniture and the cats were annoyed. The dog, on the other hand, an immature dog with bad habits, was excited by all the changes in the house. He jumped up, barking. He is Otto who was not afraid of the hospital bed, the oxygen machine or the medical smells, nor was he afraid of the weak woman who had scolded him. Otto jumped onto the foot of Mom’s hospital bed, and stayed. With the exception of eating and using the litter box, Otto never left Mom’s room.Days passed and Mom started to rally. “Not unusual,” I was told, “a rally is often a sign of imminent death(濒临死亡).” I was heart-broken. But Otto would not give her up so easily. He used her improved condition to reposition himself from the foot of her bed to her side. Her thin fingers found his soft coat. He leaned into her body, as if holding tightly the strings of her will to live. Though weak, she petted the dog and would not allow me to take him. Days turned into weeks and Mom continued to fight.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。Paragraph 1:Once, after the nurses had gone for the day, I heard the sound of Mom’s voice coming from her room. Paragraph 2:Three years later, Mom together with Otto is still here, medicines and nurses long gone.
