I've been a volunteer in the Macmillan@Glasgow Libraries programme for just over a year. I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work. I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learnt at work.
At one time, I felt I made a real difference when a lady came in to use the service. She was very upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We, together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions(情感) she felt. We knew we could arrange something, so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to get the ball rolling during her visit.
The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is nonclinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor's surgery. The team in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often.
It's great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a resolution(解决方法) for people who come in. It's good to have the team at the other end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer.
24.What can we infer about the author?
    A.He is a retired doctor.
B.He is volunteering in a hospital.
C.He is a counselor in cancer.
D.He has fought against cancer before.
25.Why did the lady feel upset?
A.Because she was affected by cancer.
B.Because her husband suffered from cancer.
C.Because she didn't know how to treat cancer.
D.Because she had a poor relation with her husband.
26.What do we know about the volunteers?
    A.They do well in teamwork.
    B.They receive medical training.
C.They all used to be helped.
    D.They often meet unusual things.
27.Why does the author write this text?
A.To call on readers to do voluntary work.
B.To show us how to help those in trouble.
C.To share his experiences as a volunteer.
D.To teach us how to take care of cancer patients.
    C
Chinese cuisine(菜肴) is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn't long for a favourite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of tonic food.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one's wellbeing or avoid sickness. For instance,it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesameoil(香油) hotpot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach(菠菜),are seen as “hot”,while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes (小萝卜),are seen as “cold”.One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual's health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as the wolfberry (枸杞子),can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff,in need of a modest pickmeup(提神食品).
So,whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup,or increase your mental powers with a serving of pig brain soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
28.What is the present situation of tonic food?
    A.It is catching less attention.
B.It is enjoyed by many young people.
    C.It is well known worldwide.
    D.It is becoming increasingly popular.
29.What is believed to benefit new mothers?
    A.Chinese cabbage.
    B.Fruit tea.
    C.Sesame oil hotpot.
    D.Pig brain soup.
30.Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
    A.Medicine. B.Restaurant.
    C.Education. D.Fashion.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A.The Charm of Chinese Cuisine
    B.The Popularity of Tonic Food
C.An Introduction to Chinese Tonic Food
D.Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food
    D
Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants(被告人). But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive(总经理) ladder, it is harmful to a woman.
Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the “manly” qualities required.
This is true even in politics. “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently,” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.
32.The underlined word “liability” most probably means “________”.
    A.disadvantage B.advantage
    C.misfortune D.trouble
33.In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness ________.
A.makes women look more honest and capable
    B.strengthens the feminine qualities required
C.is of no importance to women
D.often enables women to succeed quickly
34.Bowman's experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness ________.
A.turns out to be a disadvantage to men
B.is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women
    C.affects men and women alike
D.has as little effect on men as on women
35.The author writes this passage to ________.
A.give advice to jobseekers who are attractive
B.discuss the disadvantages of being attractive
    C.demand equal rights for women
    D.state the importance of appearance

    第二节 (满分25分)
Michael sat on the wooden bench outside the house holding a fourleaf clover (四叶草). Michael had believed that fourleaf clovers brought good luck, but he started doubting that kind of power.
Michael was eleven. It had been two months since his mum and dad died in an accident. A widow(独居妇人) by the name of Jill adopted him. Michael had a dislike for Jill. Her voice was loud. She also made him do her chores (家庭杂务). Michael felt not as much as a son to her. He dreamed a lot. He spoke little. He cried secretly. He had even been working on a plan for two weeks to flee the house.
That was, until he heard Jill parking her Honda into the garage.
Michael stuffed the fourleaf clover in his left pocket. Before he realised it, Jill was standing in front of him, with a small beagle (毕格尔犬) in her hand. She put the beagle down. It ran to Michael and sat on his Nike tennis shoes. Michael knelt down to pet it. After a while, he looked up,“Is the dog for me?”
Jill laughed,“Of course! You are the slowest little boy ever! I've got you a little puppy to make you work faster.”
Michael couldn't see how a beagle would help with his chores, but he thought it would be nice to have a friend. “Give him a name,” Jill said.
Michael thought for a moment. He saw a big, black spot on his back. That's it! Spot!“I'll name him Spot!” Michael announced.
“Spot, Spot, stupid name but it'll do. Now, you'd better clean the bathroom and finish your homework before dinner's ready.”
    “Yes, ma'am.”
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    答案 B
解析 标题判断题。根据第二段第一句“Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one's wellbeing or avoid sickness.”

Michael ran to the bathroom, with Spot by his side. This time he didn't feel lonely when cleaning, for the little dog was just there accompanying him. It was just a beginning. Now having a friend to play with, Michael didn't even have time to think about his escape plan. Instead, feeding and training Spot became his source of fun. And surprisingly, even Jill's loud voice didn't seem that annoying to him.
Two weeks passed, and everyone could see something changed in Michael. He was happy again. In the school he performed better and made more friends. After a day filled with pleasure, Michael came back to his room with Spot. “Were it not for Spot, I wouldn't lead such a happy life.” He thought to himself. And then inside his left pocket, he found the fourleaf clover, which was considered as an indicator of good luck. He believed in it again.
