Four wreckage sites in Bermuda
With more than 300 shipwrecks(海滩)in its waters, Bermuda is often considered the shipwreck capital of the world. Here Philippe Max Rouja, a Bermuda native, picks four of his favorite wreckage sites.
King
While most of the wreckage sites were the results of accidents, this boat was placed underwater to create a diving site intentionally. Gary Lamb, the owner of the King, gifted the boat to the Bermuda Dive Association, which placed it at a depth of 65 feet off the island’s south shore. “It’s often considered a divers’ favorite, since you can swim through the boat,” Rouja says.
B-50 Bomber
While the vast majority of dive sites around Bermuda are the wreckage of ships, there is one that is different from the others: the remains of an airplane. The U.S.B-50 Bomber’s jet engine exploded and the plane dropped into the Atlantic Ocean. “The bomber’s remains now rest about 25 feet underwater,” Rouja says.
Montana and Constellation
These two wrecks are stacked(堆放)one top of each other. The Montana, a steamer, sunk after hitting a coral reef(珊瑚礁), while the Constellation, a wooden ship, met a similar fate years later.“Divers can experience the site too, since they are located just eight feet below the surface,” Rouja says.
Cristobal Colon
Known as the largest of Bermuda’s shipwrecks, the Cristobal Colon met its fare when it crashed into a coral reef. There were many attempts to save the ship, but when those failed, paintings and furnishings on it were saved. Today, many of the items on the ship can be found in the homes of Bermudians. “My dad has a painting of a bookseller from Paris hanging in his home,” Rouja says. “The story of the ship persists(存留)in locals’ daily lives. Divers can still access the ship, which sits 80 feet below the surface.”
- Which of the following is a man-made wreckage site?
A. King B. B-50 Bomber.
C. Cristobal Colon D. Montana and Constellation.
22. What is special about the B-50 Bomber site?
A. It is owned by Gary Lamb.
B. It is the remains of an airplane.
C. It is the biggest shipwreck in Bermuda.
D. It is formed by two sunken boats piled together.
23. What does Rouja say about Cristobal Colon?
A. It was saved completely.
B. It crashed into another ship.
C. Its story is well-known by local people.
D. Its body is preserved in a Bermudian’s home.
B
Some People tend to view math as quite different from language and literacy, but in truth, there is a lot of overlap between them. In fact, they work hand in hand: Math helps children build language skills, and language supports math learning. Both build thinking skills.
Research shows that the extent(程度)to which a child is exposed to math concepts in his early years predicts how well he will do in math in primary school. Even more surprising, it also predicts how well he’ll do in reading. Going further, children who can retell or create stories when they are young tend to do better in math. The good news is that this math-literacy relationship can be developed at the same time.
Everything around us can be better understood with math. It can help children make sense of their world. By helping our children see the connections between their world and math, we enrich their overall learning and development.
Math requires people to think about what words mean. When you “talk math”, you have to be precise(精确的)in your thinking and language. You have to explain your reasoning.
Learning how to use language to express mathematical thinking benefits children in many ways that might not be immediately noticed. When two kids are trying to figure out how to share a toy, math can help: Offer to set a timer for a certain amount of minutes for each child’s turn.
Math connects to everything. Jumping and climbing stairs, for example, are ways to practise counting. When children recognize, draw, play with and combine shapes, they are not only learning about geometry(几何学), but are also experimenting with visual art, architecture and science.
Count with fingers often. Ask your child to show numbers with his fingers. Ask:How old are you? How many pets do you have? How many cookies did you eat? Ask him to show numbers in different ways—four can be three fingers on one hand and one finger on the other.
- What does the underlined word“overlap”(in Paragraph 1) mean?
A. The shared area of math and language.
B. The relationship between math and thinking.
C. The great effect that math has on language.
D. The difference between math and language.
25. Which of the following is NOT true according to the first paragraph?
A. Math is good for children to build language skills.
B. Language supports math learning.
C. Both math and language build thinking skills.
D. Everyone tends to view math as quite different from language.
26. What can we know from the second paragraph?
A. The more a child talks, the better he will do in math.
B. The more stories a child reads, the better he will do in math.
C. The earlier a child learns math, the better he will do in writing.
D. The more a child learns math, the better he will do in reading.
27. We can know from the passage that .
A. math and science are two important courses.
B. math makes our children strong and healthy.
C. math does good to children in many aspects.
D. learning math is the best way to learn the world.

I had difficulty in finding work when I was in my twenties. Finally, Seagulls Reuse in Leeds took me on as a volunteer. It’s an environmental social enterprise that rescues 400 tonnes of paint from landfill(垃圾填埋池) annually and repurposes it to offer a bespoke(定制的) paint-mixing service. I carved out my own role, mixing paint, working with other volunteers and assisting customers, before being hired as a decorator and full-time member of staff. It wasn’t until then, in my late 20s, that I realized I’m colour-blind.
Mixing paint is nothing like the colour wheel you learn at school;blue and green doesn’t just make green. You don’t even mix different greens to make green paint. It’s more technical and complex than that, and there are so many subtle(微妙的)variations.
Dulux and other big companies let machines do all the work, but our process is nothing like that. We can also use the colours we have in the warehouse that day, so we sometimes have to get creative. They have scientists, but we have our intuition(直觉),years of experience and an essential human touch and eye.
I’m 38 now, and have been at Seagulls for 11 years. I’ve learned that I struggle most with colours. I see green in dark browns and some reds I see as pink. So,along with the knowledge I’ve now memorized, I use different skills with customers. I get them involved by explaining how I’m creating their paint and encourage feedback(反馈). That way, we’re both helping each other get the perfect result. I write down things I do wrong, so I don’t repeat them.
If I tell customers I’m colour-blind, they’re always shocked and say they’d never have guessed. I do have a visual problem, but I’m not angry about it and wouldn’t change it even if I could. It’s made me push myself harder.
- What does Paragraph 2 tell us about mixing paint?
A. It’s rather challenging. B. It’s compulsory at school.
C. It’s attractive to teenager. D. It’s unbearable to the author.
29. How does the author improve his work?
A. By learning from his mistakes. B. By depending more on machines.
C. By turning to experts if necessary. D. By managing to see colours correctly.
30. What can we learn from the author’s story?
A. We shouldn’t regret what we’ve done.
B. We should do what we’re really good at.
C. We shouldn’t let our problems hold us back.
D. We should keep learning new things all our life.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The story between Miss Jordan and me was the most amazing story I wanted to share. Miss Jordan was one of the teachers who I could hardly forget.
When I was young at school, I loved to talk, a characteristic not always appreciated by Miss Jordan, my tenth-grade English teacher.
She was a teacher no one liked because she was so strict. She stood about five-foot-five, was very thin and wore her hair pulled back in a way that gave her a horsy look. She wore those half-circular reading glasses. Whenever she got upset, she would lower her head and look at you over the top of her glasses.
One day in her class I was busy talking. I didn’t realize she had stopped teaching and was staring straight at me. “Young lady, Mary, I would like to see you after school.”
Later Miss Jordan explained in a low, but very firm voice that showed she expected me to listen when she was talking. For punishment she told me to write a thousand-word essay on education and its effect on the economy. She wanted it in by the following Wednesday.
Well, I met my deadline. I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a sign of approval from her. The next day in class, However, she was looking at me over her glasses. She called me forward and returned my paper.“Go back and rewrite,” she said. “Remember, each paragraph is supposed to begin with a topic sentence.” When she gave my paper back a second time, she corrected the grammar. The third time, The spelling. The fourth time, it was punctuation. The fifth, it wasn’t neat enough. I was sick!
The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving generous space. When she saw it, she removed her glasses and smiled. She finally accepted the paper. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.

写作
①“The home-made ball”is a short story written by Jerry Johnson.
②The story is set in modern-day America.
③The main character is a boy called Kevin. Kevin and Mike are good friends who play soccer with their home-made ball every day, but when Kevin gets new sneakers and a new soccer ball, things are changed.
Friendship is an important theme in this short story. The author, Jerry Johnson, uses the old and new things, like the old home-made ball and the new soccer ball, the old bench and the new sneakers as symbols. The old things symbolize the most valuable thing--friendship, which needs to be valued. The new things symbolize the challenges that the most valuable thing meets.
④From my point of view, this story is really good and worth reading, which is educational to us. That is, nothing is more important than friendship. So I give a five-star rating.
Paragraph 1:
One day after two months. Miss Jordan came into the class and said, “Class, do you still remember an essay contest held citywide? They’ve announced the winners! I am so happy to inform you that Mary has won the third prize in the essay contest with the title ‘Education and Its Effect on the Economy’.”Then thunderous applause rocked the classroom. After class, many classmates asked me how I made it. Without excellent writing skills, I well remembered that I told them it was all about six-times rewriting urged by Miss Jordan.
Paragraph 2:
I was amazed, thrilled and grateful. It was the first time I had ever won a prize. Years later, I told many people that story, and my comments, including my unfriendly description of Miss Jordan’s appearance. Unexpectedly, Miss Jordan wrote to me, and said that her look wasn’t important. What was important was the lesson I had learnt. When I wrote and rewrote that paper for her, I began to learn how to discipline myself. I was grateful for the lesson she had taught me.(158 words)
