My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters (水泡)from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.
I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration(合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.
The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie (大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.
As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.
That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.
24.What seemed to be the TV director’s initial reaction to the garden?
    A. They were excited. B. They were surprised.
    C. They were worried. D. They were uninterested.
25.What was special about the garden?
    A. Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.
    B. The grass grew faster than common grass.
    C. The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.
    D. Underground water was used for the plants.
26.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph?
    A. We got blisters on our hands.
    B. Our hard work was worthwhile.
    C. The garden would be famous.
    D. The project would be finished.
27.How did the author feel about the project?
    A. Annoyed. B. Curious. C. Proud. D. Regretful.
    C
Szilajka Erzsebet is a Hungarian artist who turns ordinary pebbles(鹅卵石) into amazing works of art. The artist says she’s inspired by the pebbles’ shape, the richness of their patterns, and the beauty of nature. “I use all the pebbles in their original form shaped only by nature itself.” says Szilajka.
When Szilajka is creating her art, she lets her feelings shape the details. “This way the completed picture becomes dynamic in spite of the fact that the pebbles themselves play a static(静态的) role in the work of art,” explains the artist. “It’s like a photo taken in the perfect time. It includes the movement, the feeling, the story which can be continued. This way there are not only pebbles in the pictures but invisible fingerprints and ‘soul-prints’ as well.”
When creating her art, Szilajka often relies on her customers’ ideas but uses her artistic freedom as well. “If I only listen to myself, I do think that the most essential elements in life stand on the simplest things,” says the artist. “For me, art is adding that little something extra to simple subject matters.”
The artist believes that the completed work of art is not only her own but a common creation of the artist and the receiver. “These two things together is pebble art,” explains Szilajka. “It only becomes a real work of art if it really means something to the receivers as they have the opportunity to add their own feelings and thoughts as well. Pebbles have no face, so anyone can enter and play a part in a pebble picture…”
    28. What’s the feature of her work according to Szilajka?
    A. It’s original and dynamic. B. It’s creative and picturesque.
    C. It’s imaginative and static. D. It’s emotional and inspiring.
    29. What does the underlined “It” refer to in Paragraph 2?
    A. A pebble. B. A pebble picture. C. A photo. D. Nature itself.
    30. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
    A. The concept of Szilajka’s creation. B. The inspiration of Szilajka’s creation.
    C. The significance of Szilajka’s creation. D. The rewards of Szilajka’s creation.
    31. What’s the genre(体裁) of the text?
    A. A feature. B. An argumentative essay.
    C. A biography. D. A personage introduction.
    D
People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over the counter medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗) like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it.
So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work? According to James Taylor professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it's easy to believe it's medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported.
It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figure out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw(拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.
The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus(鼻病毒) A and B. But they didn't find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against rhinovirus C.
''This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinoviruses,'' study leader Professor Ann C. Palmenberg at the University of Wiscons in Madison, US, told Science Daily.
Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly detailed 3D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses.
With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don't really work.
    32. What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold?
    A. They are quite effective. B. They are slightly helpful.
    C. They actually have no effect. D. They still need to be improved.
    33. How do antiviral drugs work?
    A. By breaking up cold viruses directly.
    B. By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses.
    C. By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases.
    D. By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time.
    34. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar.
    B. Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold.
    C. Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently.
    D. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.
    35. What is the best title for this passage?
    A. No current cure for common cold B. Helpful home remedies
    C. Drugs against cold viruses D. Research on cold viruses
If you live in a city where everyone rushes, you should realize that you don’t have to be like everyone else.___36___Here are some tips to consider and perhaps to adopt, if they work for your life.
    Do less
Cut back on your projects, on your task list, on how much you try to do each day. Focus not on quantity but on quality. Pick 2 or 3 important things — or even just one important thing — and work on those first.___37___
    ___38___
If you’re constantly rushing to appointments or other places you have to be, it’s because you don’t allot (分配) enough time in your schedule for preparing and for traveling. Arrange your schedule to allow time for this stuff. If you think it only takes you 10 minutes to get ready for work or a date, perhaps give yourself 30 to 45 minutes so you don’t have to shave in a rush or put on makeup in the car.
Realize that if it doesn’t get done, that’s Ok.
___39___ I know that’s a frustrating attitude for some of you who don’t like laziness or living without firm deadlines, but it's also reality. The world likely won’t end if you don’t get that task done today. Your boss might get mad, but the company won’t collapse(倒塌) and the life will go on.
    Practice mindfulness (正念减压法)
Simply learn to live in the present, rather than thinking so much about the future or the past. When you eat, fully appreciate your food.___40___ When you’re walking, appreciate your surroundings, no matter where you are.
    A. Save smaller, routine tasks for later in the day.
    B. Walk instead of driving in rush hour traffic.
    C. Give yourself time to get ready and get there.
    D. You can be different.
    E. Practice being comfortable with sitting, doing nothing.
    F. There is always tomorrow.
    G. When you’re with someone, be with them fully.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again gave the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
    注意:
    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
    Paragraph 1
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2
That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

B 2 2. B 23. C
    【答案】24.D 25.C 26.B 27.C
A 29. B 30. A 31. D
根据第一段中““I use all the pebbles in their original form shaped only by nature itself.” says Szilajka.(“我用的都是天然形成的卵石。”Szilajka说)”以及第二段中“This way the completed picture becomes dynamic in spite of the fact that the pebbles themselves play a static role in the work of art(通过这种方式,完整的画面变得动态,尽管卵石本身在艺术作品中扮演着静态的角色)”可知,Szilajka认为她的作品是原创和动态的。故选A。
根据画线词后文“This way there are not only pebbles in the pictures but invisible fingerprints and ‘soul-prints’ as well.(这样一来,照片里不仅有鹅卵石,还有无形的指纹和‘灵魂印记’)”可知,鹅卵石画包括运动,感觉以及可以继续的故事。
根据倒数第二段“When creating her art, Szilajka often relies on her customers’ ideas but uses her artistic freedom as well. “If I only listen to myself, I do think that the most essential elements in life stand on the simplest things,” says the artist. “For me, art is adding that little something extra to simple subject matters.”(在创作艺术时,Szilajka通常依靠客户的想法,但也使用她的艺术自由。“如果我只听自己的话,我确实认为生活中最基本的元素是建立在最简单的东西上的,”艺术家说。“对我来说,艺术就是在简单的主题上添加一些额外的东西。”)”都可以进入,在卵石画中扮演一个角色……”)”可知,最后两段主要讲的是Szilajka的创作理念。故选A。
根据第一段中“Szilajka Erzsebet is a Hungarian artist who turns ordinary pebbles into amazing works of art. The artist says she’s inspired by the pebbles’ shape, the richness of their patterns, and the beauty of nature.(匈牙利艺术家Szilajka Erzsebet将普通的鹅卵石变成了令人惊叹的艺术品。这位艺术家说,她的灵感来自于鹅卵石的形状、丰富的图案和大自然的美丽)”可推知,文章属于人物介绍。故选D。
    【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. A
根据文章第一段的“Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it.” C. They actually have no effect.(它们实际上没有什么效果)符合以上推测,故选C项。
根据文章第三段的“They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus.” B. By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses.(通过改变感冒病毒的表面结构)符合以上说法,故选B项。
根据文章第三段的“To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw (拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.” D. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.(了解感冒病毒的结构是开发有效治愈方法的关键)符合以上说法,故选D项。
根据文章的主要内容,尤其第一段的“Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it.”(然而,关于普通感冒有一个残酷的事实:没有什么方法能真正治愈它。) A. No current cure for common cold(目前还没有治愈普通感冒的方法)可以作为本文标题,对文章进行概括,故选A项。

A. movement移动;B. event事件;C. cycle循环;D. routine路线。

As we agreed, you’ll be speaking on the topic from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be extra minutes for questions.
Would you please tell me what you’ll need then? If you could let me know your specific requirements by 10th, July, I’ll have plenty of time to make sure that the school hall provides you with what you need.
Thank you again for agreeing to speak. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
Paragraph 1
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir. This fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lips shaking and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “ Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
    Paragraph 2
That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. We didn’t go to the circus that night. When I asked Dad why he did so, Dad said, “My child, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father. Surely he wasn’t begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.” He paused for a while, as if wandering in his memory. “We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we didn’t go without.”
