Ross Salvo, a 12-year-old boy from Newtown, CT, was very special, in the way he lived, served, cared about others and overcame challenges.

Born with serious health issues, Ross survived his first days of life, but the health problems continued. Shortly after birth, Ross had a brain injury. By the time Ross was two months old, he had already had one heart surgery and three brain surgeries. Despite many challenges, Ross made it through those early days. As one doctor said, "There is no reason for him to be alive right now, but he is still alive!"

But none of these stopped Ross from becoming the best version of himself and making a big impact on the people around him. The key was his amazing attitude, faith and spirit. His family never said "no" to things Ross wanted to do.

Ross wanted to be like everyone else. Where others saw differences, he saw things they had in common. As he once said to a kid who was mean to him, "So I have crutches(拐杖). What's the difference?" His family said he did not have a disability, but "different ability".

Ross was willing to try anything! And he did! He played soccer and basketball. He was an active member of the youth group at St. Rose of Lima church. He enjoyed serving others. His parents were both Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Ross trained to be an EMT and helped his parents train others in CPR as a volunteer training assistant. Ross was also a great friend to many. He genuinely cared about others and always tried to spread his great attitude to those around him. When people were struggling, he would encourage them.

Ross's teacher, Amy, said, "Ross had his challenges, but he never complained whenever there were difficulties. I am a better teacher because I had the privilege(优惠待遇)of having him teach me."

    24. What do we know about Ross as a child?

    A. He struggled with others.      B. He led a healthy life.

    C. He had different abilities.      D. He was a sufferer.

    A. Ross's attitude to life.   B. Ross's education.   C. Ross's health issues.   D. Ross's poor life.

    26. What did Amy want to express about Ross?

    A. The care for him.             B. The privilege of him.

    C. The inspiration from him.      D. The sympathy for him.

    27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Ross Salvo Tried His Best to Be a Volunteer

    B. Ross Salvo Fought against Health Issues Bravely

    C. Ross Salvo's Confidence Affected Others Greatly

    D. Ross Salvo's Way to Grow Inspired His Teacher

    C

The Arctic's permafrost(永久冻土)is melting fast. That's bad news, because these frozen soils store billions of tons of carbon dioxide, just waiting to be released. So is there a way to save the permafrost? One team of researchers thinks it may have found a possible solution: big animals and herbivores(食草动物).

Back in 1996, researchers started an experiment called Pleistocene Park. They fenced about eight square miles of land in northeast Siberia. And then they introduced different types of herbivores: horses, sheep and other large creatures. Since then, scientists have studied these animals' effects on the ecosystem. One outcome is that these large herbivores help keep the ground very cold-cooler than it would otherwise be.

"The snow in winter is important to soil temperature, because it acts as an insulating layer(隔绝层). So the air in winter, at the high altitudes, is much colder than the soil," Philipp Porada, an ecologist at the University of Hamburg said. "So the idea of this experiment was to introduce large herbivores to quantify their effects on soil temperature and see if they can actually protect permafrost soils against melting. And this works because the animals' trampling(踩踏)leads to less insulation of the soil against cold air temperatures and results in a cooling effect."

Porada and his colleagues realized the significance of this effect, so they pulled data from Pleistocene Park to model what effect herbivores could have on permafrost if they lived in large numbers in the Arctic.

Porada said, "These herbivores in the model reduce soil temperature greatly, by 1. 7 degrees on average. And this leads to a preservation of around 80 percent of today's permafrost area. And without the herbivore effect in the model, we found that only 50 percent of the permafrost area would remain by the year 2100."

    28. What will the permafrost's melting result in?

    A. The decrease of air.            B. The cooling effect.

    C. The increase in herbivores.      D. The rise in the surrounding temperature.

    29. Why can the herbivores help keep the ground cooler?

    A. They can make more insulating layers.      B. They can protect the snow on the ground.

    C. They make cold air reach the soil more easily. D. They make the ground release lots of carbon.

    30. How did Porada feel about the finding of the experiment?

    A. It's significant.              B. It's unreasonable.

    C. It remains to be checked.      D. It has been used widely.

    31. What did Porada intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

    A. The temperature would increase greatly in the future.

    B. The herbivores would help find more permafrost areas.

    C. The herbivores could lead to the preservation of permafrost.

    D. Only half of the permafrost would remain by the year 2100.

    D

It's well-known that facial recognition is widely used in shopping, home security, and law enforcement(实施), and millions of us use it to open our smartphones. But privacy advocates are raising alarms about the growing use of facial recognition technology.

The American administration recently proposed a rule to use facial recognition to identify and photograph all people entering and leaving the United States, including American citizens. That idea was scrapped after big objections from lawmakers and activists, but the administration is moving ahead with more limited use of the technology in a number of airports and other ports of entry. Officials say it makes the public safer and so far, they've had very few complaints from travelers.

However, a growing number of critics, both in and out of the government, say any type of facial recognition is just like illegal surveillance(监视). They say it exchanges too much freedom for too little security. Many note that once the government has a database of Americans with their photographs, there's no telling what it could be used for. Beyond the privacy concerns, security experts are also worried that a huge government database could be a major target for a data breach(数据泄露). Some say it could give hackers access to data from millions of Americans.

Mike Howell, a former consultant of the Department of Homeland Security, suggests a possible solution: simply erase the information after it's used. "The big question for us," says Howell, "is how the government largely will protect the data. We want the data we collect to keep us safe from threats, not to, you know, make it unsafe." Finally, the administration may have the final say on the future of facial recognition, with more regulations being advised to keep it in check.

    32. What does the underlined word "scrapped" in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Expressed.      B. Abandoned.      C. Considered.      D. Updated.

    33. What attitude do the security experts have towards facial recognition?

    A. Concerned.       B. Uncaring.      C. Flexible.      D. Tolerant.

    34. What does Howell advise American administration to do?

    A. Exchange much security for some freedom.

    B. Stop using facial recognition in shopping.

    C. Introduce some laws to stop data breaches.

    D. Protect the privacy related to facial recognition.

    35. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. Facial recognition is actually a double-edged sword.

    B. There are alarms about growing use of facial recognition.

    C. It is urgent for the government to stop using facial recognition.

    D. The American administration is advised to use facial recognition.

    第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Do you have one of those days when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad moods will probably go away after some time.   36

Give yourself a positive talk.   37   Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper and then give optimistic answers. Then try your best to think and behave positively.

38   Exercise is the most popular bad-mood buster(遏制者). A person who is in a bad mood has low energy and high tension. Taking a fast ten-minute walk or doing some quick exercises can do wonders towards changing that bad mood. However, you should pay attention to the length of time.

Avoid things that won't improve your moods. TV may not help much, because you need to increase your energy level and stimulate your mind. And before you reach for a piece of cake and coffee, think about how moods and food are linked.   39   Research shows that carbohydrates(碳水化合物)produce a calming effect on people who have a desire for them.

Another simple way to be against unhappiness is to make a to-do list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas, you realize you are not helpless.   40

    A. Walk it off.

    B. Save your strength.

    C. Stop and listen to what's on your mind.

    D. Think about your past difficult experiences.

    E. You can make changes in your moods and life.

    F. Sugar and coffee contribute to depressed moods.

    G. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster.
