About a month after I joined Facebook, I got a call from Lori Goler, a highly regarded senior director of marketing at eBay. She made it clear this was a business call. “I want to apply to work with you at Facebook,” she said. “Instead of recommending myself, I want to ask you: What is your biggest problem, and how can I solve it?”
My jaw hit the floor. I had hired thousands of people over the previous decade and no one had ever said anything remotely like that. People usually focus on finding the right role for themselves, with the implication that their skills will help the company. Lori put Facebook’s needs front and center. It was a killer approach. I responded, “Recruiting is my biggest problem. And, yes, you can solve it.”
Lori never dreamed she would work in recruiting, but she jumped in. She even agreed to trade earnings for acquiring new skills in a new field. Lori did a great job running recruiting and within months was promoted to her current job, leading People@Facebook.
The most common metaphor for careers is a ladder, but this concept no longer applies to most workers. As of 2010, the average American had eleven jobs from the ages of eighteen to forty-six alone. Lori often quotes Pattie Sellers, who came up with a much better metaphor: “Careers are a jungle gym, not a ladder.”
As Lori describes it, there’s only one way to get to the top of a ladder, but there are many ways to get to the top of a jungle gym. The jungle gym model benefits everyone, but especially women who might be starting careers, switching careers, getting blocked by external barriers, or reentering the workforce after taking time off. The ability to create a unique path with occasional dips, detours (弯路), and even dead ends presents great views of many people, not just those at the top. On a ladder, most climbers are stuck staring at the butt of the person above.
    4. Why did Lori make the call?
    A. She helped Facebook to solve the biggest problem.
    B. She wanted to make a business deal with Facebook.
    C. She tried to ask for a pay rise in Facebook.
    D. She wanted to become an employee in Facebook.
    5. What impressed “I” by Lori?
    A. Lori was good at running recruiting.
    B. Lori attached great importance to Facebook’s needs.
    C. Lori jumped in Facebook with no adequate experience.
    D. Lori was skilled in marketing at eBay.
    6. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Now all people don’t tend to climb the ladder.
    B. None on the ladder can enjoy the great views.
    C. Jungle gyms offer limited exploration for employees.
    D. A pregnant woman, jobless, benefits little from the jungle gyms.
    7. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. It’s a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder.
    B. Facebook’s Biggest Problem.
    C. Applying for a Job in Facebook.
    D. A Jungle Gym is Better than a Ladder.
D 5. B 6. A 7. A

根据第一段“I want to apply to work with you at Facebook,” she said.“我想申请在Facebook工作”她说。

The most common metaphor for careers is a ladder, but this concept no longer applies to most workers.
It's a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder.
    C
Hundreds of millions of people watched on television on July 20, 1969, when American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon. Back then, businesses sold many products connected to the event and many such products are now on sales again — in celebration of the moon landing’s 50th anniversary.
A limited number of Omega’s gold Speedmaster watches — the same kind that Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon — will be sold at $34,600. Omega Speedmaster watches have been an important part of space travel since NASA chose them for its moon landing in 1965. Other watches had failed required tests. Omega gave its gold Speedmasters to the astronauts at a dinner in 1969 before the landing. Another less costly type of silver Speedmasters will be sold at $ 9,650. It carries a picture of Aldrin stepping down from the moon lander.
Something for children-as well as adults — is the NASA Apollo 11 moon lander set. Made by Lego, it is a group of small pieces to put together to make a model of the moon lander.
Other things for sale include the anti-gravity Fisher Space Pens developed just for the Apollo 11 mission. They work even when writing upside down. Now Fisher Space Pen Company has a limited-edition pen for sale at an out-of this-world price: $700, with real material from the Apollo 11 spacecraft.
Back in 1969, companies were quick to show their Apollo 11 connections with media and advertisements. The food company Stouffer’s made sure consumers knew it provided food for Apollo 11 astronauts once they returned to Earth. It started the ad campaign “Everybody who’s been to the moon is eating Stouffer’s”. Fifty years later, the company is celebrating with a media campaign to share some recipes from 1969.
Marketing experts David Meerman Scott says, “Since 1972,we’ve gone around and around the earth many times, and it is not interesting to people any more. I’m not sure whether they can accept such crazy prices. Now NASA has had plans to go to Mars in the 2030s and marketing efforts for a NASA Mars mission should be in development.”
    8. What can we learn about the gold Speedmaster watch?
    A. It will be sold at $34,600. B. NASA bought itats9,650.
    C. It has Aldrin’s picture inside. D. It was chosen by NASA in 1969.
    9. What does the underlined word “out-of-this-world” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Extremely fair. B. Surprisingly high. C. Really low. D. Truly worthwhile.
    10. What does David Meerman Scott mean?
    A. It is a waste of money to go around and around the moon.
    B. People will be interested in the products connected to Apollo.
    C. Since 1972,governments have lost interest in moon explorations.
    D. The event of going to Mars will be another good chance to advertise.
    11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
    A. To show how to design the best advertisement.
    B. To forecast the sales of the products in the text.
    C. To introduce some of the products connected to Apollo 11.
    D. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第二段第一句“A limited number of Omega’s gold Speedmaster watches — the same kind that Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon — will be sold at $34,600. 故选A项。
根据第四段最后一句“Now Fisher Space Pen Company has a limited-edition pen for sale at an out-of this-world price: $700, with real material from the Apollo 11 spacecraft.(现在,费雪太空笔公司推出了一款限量版钢笔,售价700美元,这款笔的材料是来自阿波罗11号宇宙飞船的真实材料)”可知,这款笔是限量版的而且材料是来自阿波罗11号宇宙飞船的真实材料,所以价格应该是昂贵的,故猜测out-of this-world的意思为价格高得惊人。A.
根据第最后一段“Marketing experts David Meerman Scott says, “Since 1972,we’ve gone around and around the earth many times, and it is not interesting to people any more. I’m not sure whether they can accept such crazy prices. Now NASA has had plans to go to Mars in the 2030s and marketing efforts for a NASA Mars mission should be in development.”(市场营销专家大卫·默尔曼·斯科特说:“自1972年以来,我们已经绕着地球转了很多圈,但人们对它不再感兴趣了。
根据第一段最后一句“Back then, businesses sold many products connected to the event and many such products are now on sales again — in celebration of the moon landing’s 50th anniversary.(当时,企业销售了许多与此次活动相关的产品,现在许多此类产品又在销售——以庆祝登月50周年)”可知,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是介绍一些与阿波罗11有关的产品。故选C项。
    D

根据上文“The average family spends around thousands per year on at-home entertainment.(普通家庭每年花在家庭娱乐上的费用约为几千美元)”以及后文“You can reduce your entertainment expenses if you know where to cut back.(如果你知道在哪里削减开支,你就可以减少你的娱乐开支)”可知,上文提到普通家庭花费在家庭娱乐上的费用,后文则提到可以减少这些娱乐开支,说明本句承上启下,家庭娱乐开支可以减少,D选项中a number对应上文中thousands。
It allows users to hear without downloading. These kinds of services often have an ad-free subscription. But many also offer free options.(你可以试试音乐流媒体服务。
根据后文“Whether you're a bookworm or a casual reader, a library card can save you hundreds on entertainment. Paper or electronic books, movies, magazines and music are all available for free or a minimal annual fee. Some libraries even rent video games, cooking tools or board games. Libraries also offer free community events like book clubs or holiday celebrations.(无论你是书虫还是普通读者,一张借书证都可以为你节省数百元的娱乐费用。
根据上文“Rent video games instead of buying them. You don't have to shell out your paycheck to get the latest game release.(租游戏而不是买。你不必为获得最新的游戏发行而花钱)”以及后文“This option is especially ideal if you tend not to replay games.( 如果你不想重玩游戏,这个选项尤其理想)”可知,本段的建议是租赁游戏,而不是花钱买下游戏,E选项中rental service对应上文中Rent。
根据上文“Share entertainment memberships with your loved ones. Share the cost of a music, movie, or video game subscription with a friend or a roommate. If your relatives are interested, some services offer family discounts at a reduced fee.(和你爱的人分享娱乐会员资格。

结合设空句“Every day people throw away a lot of household garbage – paper, cans, kitchen waste, used batteries and glass ____1____ sorting it.”以及后文“There are many problems ____2____(cause) by unsorted garbage.” “without doing”,“在没有…… 故填without。
“a great waste of…”,固定短语,意为“对…… 故填a。
分析可知,“___4____ does harm to people’s health”为之前名词短语“serious environmental pollution”的非限制性定语从句,先行词在从句中作主语,应用关系代词which引导从句,that不能引导非限制性定语从句。故填which。
故填have been held。
故填to exchange。
分析可知,“But once one person ____10____ (develop) the habit of garbage sorting”句中“once”意为“一旦”,引导条件状语从句,一般用一般现在时表达。
