The era of intelligent home is on the way. A smart pet-flap based on lift door technology that lets pets in—but keeps foxes out—has been made public at the world's largest tech conference. The MyQ Pet Portal is the latest tool to promise to revolutionise petkeeping.
For $2,999 owners get a new door featuring sliding doors that are unnoticeable when closed. The family pet is equipped with a Bluetooth collar that sends a signal to the sensor hidden in the door which then informs the owner.
A smart phone app allows the owner to choose whether to open the door, with a video and audio stream(音频流)enabling the owner to see and talk to their pet. "It is a solution for homeowners who want to keep the security and the appearance of their home in good condition while providing their pets with the freedom to play on demand," the company claims. MyQ is owned by Chamberlain Group, a US company specialising in garage doors.
The door comes with an "auto-close and lock system" that triggers after the dog goes through to ensure that no other pets or foxes can use it There is also the option to let a dog open the door automatically when it approaches, without the need for the owners approval.
Samsung revealed a robot called Bot Handy that can, it is claimed, pick up laundry, load the dishwasher, set the table, pour wine, and fetch drinks. There was also an app or voice-controlled bathtub from Kohler, a US maker of bathroom products, which attempts to make the spa experience at home possible. The tub, costing up to $8,700 can connect to voice assistants such as Alexa that will tell it to run the water, adjust the temperature release scents.
    24. What is the MyQ Pet Portal based on?
    A. The bluetooth technology. B. The lift door technology.
    C. The latest robot technology. D. The voice-controlled technology.
    25. How does the pet dog go through the door?
    A. By pushing the door itself. B. With a sensor in the collar.
    C. By sending a signal to its owner. D. With the auto-close and lock system.
    26. How is the passage developed?
    A. By comparing data. C. By giving typical examples.
    B. By analyzing the reasons. D. By presenting various ideas.
    27. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. The revolution of keeping pets.
    B. The advertisement for sliding doors.
    C. The application and promotion of a smart app.
    D. The introduction to home intelligent products.

The Chinese brake fem(蜈蚣草)—which is native to Asia, southern Europe, Africa and Australia—has a unique ability: It can take in high quantities of arsenic(砷), a harmful heavy metal, from the soil and store it without dying.
Now, a team of scientists from Purdue University has finally unlocked the secrets of how the plant is able to do this. The findings could have important significance because soil and groundwater polluted with arsenic are a potential risk to hundreds of millions of people around the world.
Currently, cleaning up the toxic(有毒的)metal is a laborious and very expensive process. However, the scientists hope that the Chinese brake fern could hold the key to a more effective solution.
"Other researchers have shown that this fern, when grown on arsenic-polluted soil, can remove almost 50 percent of the arsenic in five years," said lead researcher Jody Banks in a statement, "It takes time, but it's cheap."
Furthermore, the team said that the new findings could one day be used to genetically(从基因方面)engineer other plants to suck up the toxic metal from the soil, and they should work more quickly and effectively than the Chinese brake fern, thus providing a solution that could potentially reduce the cost and time of arsenic cleanup.
In general, arsenic is toxic to plants and animals due to the fact that it can cause cell death by disturbing a cell's ability to produce ATP, which acts as an energy source. The Chinese brake fern, however, is quite able to prevent, the process from occurring, researchers said.
The team identified three genes that exhibit significant activity when the plant comes into contact(接触)with arsenic. When the scientists "turned off" these genes in experiments, they found that the plant died, stressing their important in protecting against arsenic's toxic effects.
    28. What is special about the Chinese brake fern?
    A. It can prevent the production of ATP. B. It can be a new source of metal.
    C. It can only be found in China. D. It can absorb arsenic from the soil.
    29. Why did Banks mention the findings by other researchers?
    A. To prove the acute poisonousness of arsenic.
    B. To stress the significance of their new study.
    C. To show a cheap method of removing arsenic.
    D. To explain the need to clean up arsenic-polluted water.
    30. How might genetic technology help solve the problem of arsenic pollution?
    A. By creating arsenic-resistant soil.
    B. By improving the Chinese brake fern.
    C. By changing the characteristics of arsenic.
    D. By making other plants clean up arsenic.
    31. What did the researchers do to find the key role of the three genes?
    A. They got them to stop working.
    B. They separated them from the plant.
    C. They compared them with other genes
    D. They observed their functions separately.
    D
Here's an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn't require an actual shot.
For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch(疫苗贴)in a human clinical(临床的)and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection(注射). Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized(免疫的)against the flu.
Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with an alternative method that uses "microneedles". These tiny needles on a patch are very small. Yet they're big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu.
None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The group that got patches bad mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they'd rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts.
The biggest beneficiaries(受益人)could be people in low- and middle- income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits—the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn't require refrigeration, can be self-administered and doesn't cause waste of needles are even better.
"Microncedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs," wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England.
    32. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. A vaccine patch that cures people of their flu.
    B. A clinical study that protects people from disease.
    C. A patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past
    D. A method that makes traditional flu shots painless.
    33. What do we know about the vaccine patch?
    A. It is produced by the WHO B. It causes slight side effect
    C. It delivers vaccine to the little finger. D. It works badly on people.
    34. The new patch has all the following benefits except that .
    A. it is provided free of charge B. it can be used without a doctor
    C. it can be kept at room temperature. D. it needs less care in transportation
    35. What is Katja and Maria's attitude towards microneedle patches?
    A. Disappointed. B. Favorable.
    C. Concerned D. Unacceptable.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question: "Should I jump?" This is what motivation or the lack of it can do. Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of the same coin. 36 Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.
37 More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal? First, you need to evaluate yourself, your values your strengths, your weaknesses, your achievements, your desires, etc. Only then should you set your goals.
You also need to judge the quality and depth of your motivation. This is quite important, because it is directly related to your commitment. There are times when your heart is not in your work. 38 So, slow down and think what you really want to do at that moment. Clarity(清晰)of thoughts can help you move forward.
Another way of setting realistic goals is to analyze your short and long term objectives, keeping in mind your beliefs, values and strengths. Remember that goals are flexible. 39 They also need to be measurable. You must keep these points in mind while setting your goals.
Your personal circumstances are equally important. For example, you may want to be a Pilot but can't become one because your eyesight is not good enough. 40 You should reassess your goals, and motivate yourself to set a fresh goal.
You will surely need to overcome some difficulties, some planned, but most unplanned. You cannot overcome them without ample motivation. Make sure that you plan for these difficulties at the time of setting your goals.
    A. This can affect your work.
    B. So how should you motivate yourself?
    C. However, this should not discourage you.
    D. So why should we try to set specific goals?
    E. They can change according to circumstances.
    F. Motivation is what you need most to do a good job.
    G. Without motivation, you can neither set a goal nor reach it.
