Kristy vanMarle, prfessr f the University f Missuri, has determined that cntrary t what previus studies have shwn, infants(婴儿)are able t quantify substances(物质)—like sand r water—as early as 10 mnths. As lng as the difference between the tw substances is large enugh, infants will chse the larger amunt, especially when it cmes t fd.
With the assistance f her team researchers, vanMarle tested the quantifying skills f babies by presenting them with tw cups: ne cntaining a small amunt f fd, and ne cntaining a larger amunt. Cnsistently, the babies chse the larger amunt.

“Since psychlgists have begun studying infants with sensitive measures, we’ve discvered a lt f early abilities. I think fr parents, it shuld be exciting t knw that there’s smebdy in there that has sme fundamental and basic knwledge f the wrld, and that knwledge is guiding their develpment,” vanMarle said.
In the future, vanMarle says this kind f study culd be linked t a child’s prgress in math-related skills, althugh prgrams marketed t increase thse abilities, such as “Baby Einstein,” still have mixed reviews when it cmes t academic study.
