My 12-year-old niece was staying with us for a couple of days. She was remembering some acts of kindness we did together when she was less than five years old. We talked about how so much had changed, and with pandemic, how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.
The next day, I needed something from the downtown area and happened to take her with me. As we walked around on the street, we heard a beautiful male voice singing a very soulful song. We turned around to see a middle-aged man sitting on a street corner with his guitar. A couple were sitting on a bench nearby and listening to his music.
After getting a few things done, we happened to sit at an outdoor dining restaurant across from him on the other side of the street. My niece was learning how to sing herself, and she kept smiling and saying how wonderful his singing was. Seeing how moved she was勿his music, at the end of our meal, I gave her a ten-dollar bill and asked her to walk across the street and put it in his bowl.
She was a little surprised. "Really?" she asked with bright eyes. I nodded. So she headed over and as she approached, the man was just finishing a song and started talking to her, and they ended up having a sweet conversation. She told him how touched she was by his music, and he ended up telling her that she made his day. As she was excitedly repeating the conversation back to me, she mentioned, "He didn’t even know how much it was. He was just thankful that someone was enjoying his music."

Usually in school or in clubs, children are told not to horse around-horsing around means "to act badly". But in south London, there is a club that loves it when students horse around.
The Ebony Horse Club is a riding school for children from poor families. General Manager Naomi Howgate runs the team that runs the school. With the help of volunteers, they give about 140 rides each week to children. They teach not only horseback riding but also important life skills.
The program’s eight horses have returned to their home after a long rest outside London in East Surrey. Across the road from housing for the poor, young people are again learning how to ride.
They begin by learning how to mount, or how to get on the horse. Then, they learn how to walk, jog, and finally keep the horses running slowly. These are specialized terms(专业术语)for how a horse walks or runs.
One of the club’s youngest riders is Shaddai Mcleod. The 9-year-old was very excited to be back in the saddle(马鞍). He rides after school. But he joins the team on Sundays to help in the yard. He said he gets great pleasure taking care of the horses: cleaning out the stables, tidying the horses, and measuring out their evening meals. His sister Zion is 13 and works just as hard as her brother. As she saddles up her favorite horse, Eddie, for her lesson, she says how lucky she is to be a member of the club.
Along with riding close to home, Ebony Horse Club members take day trips to clubs in the English countryside. One year ago, groups of children from the club had wonderful experiences. They also have traveled as far away as Sweden to ride horses.
The club has experienced an increase in children wanting to join. But it needs donations(捐赠)to keep running.

A. Drive the horse quickly. B. Learn specialized terms.
C. Climb onto the horseback. D. Walk slowly with the horse.

A. Money given by the public. B. The effort of club members.

A. Children’s Dreams Come True B. Kids Grow Together with Horses

A tiger park in Phuket, Thailand is preparing to welcome back foreign visitors this week. The reopening is part of a plan to bring back foreign visitors with COVID-19 vaccination(疫苗接种)to the island. The visitors do not have to follow lockdown rules. After 14 days, as long as they have no coronavirus infection(新冠感染), they can travel elsewhere in Thailand.
Chadarat Taodaeng is the general manager of Tiger Kingdom in Phuket. He said the park had put safety measures(措施)in place before Thursday’s reopening to help foreign visitors feel comfortable.
"We have vaccinated more than 90 percent of our workers and also trained them about the 'new normal' tourism," the manager said. The park has more than 50 tigers and a cheetah. And visitors can get close to them. Since the pandemic lockdowns, visitor numbers have dropped from nearly 1, 000 a day to fewer than 20.
Thailand lost about $50 billion in tourism when foreign arrivals fell to 6.7 million last year. In 2019, the country had nearly 40 million visitors. And Phuket suffered from a large number of job losses and business closings.
"I’m happy that finally there will be people visiting the tigers, and Phuket city will be bustling again," said the park’s assistant manager, Phonphawit Ton-od. She added that the reopening would "help with both tigers’ and the workers’ mental health."
Even though there has been an increase in the popularity of parks like the Tiger Kingdom, experts are against the opening. Clearly, there are worries over safety after some attacks by the animals. Bringing back visitors is important to Thailand’s economy. But government officials also have to deal with a recent increase in coronavirus infections.
32. What kind of foreign visitors does the tiger park want?
A. Wealthy ones. B. Brave ones. C. Polite ones. D. Safe ones.
33. What do we know from the manager’s words in paragraph 3?
A. The money the country lost. B. The visitors the park receives.
C. Measures the park has taken. D. The numbers of animals in the park.
34. What does the underlined word "bustling" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Busy. B. Silent. C. Clean. D. Dangerous.
35. Why do experts have a different opinion about the reopening?
A. Foreigners may spread diseases. B. They are worried about hidden risks.
C. The wild animals in the park may suffer. D. Over-tourism may damage the environment.

Improve Your Learning by Teaching
You might be looking for new ways to improve your understanding of something you are studying. Perhaps you are looking for better ways to remember important information. 36 It is not as a job, but as a way to improve your own learning. In today’s Education Tips, we will explore how teaching could help with your studies.
Researchers have been interested in the link between teaching and learning for quite some time. A 1982 study found that tutoring(辅导)helped both the tutors and the people who studied with them 37 Like the children they helped, the tutors got a better understanding of and developed more active thoughts of the subject matter covered in the lecture program.
The good news is that there are many ways that you can improve your learning by teaching. One way might be to teach your family or friends about something that you are learning. 38
You could also try teaching a younger person-perhaps a cousin, brother or sister. Try to make your lessons simple and clear, and ask, them what they do not understand.
The process of teaching and asking for feedback will help you understand that you may not understand something as well as you thought you did. That is an important, necessary step in the learning process.
39 You could write an email describing what you have learned in great detail.
A final idea for those who like technology: 40 You could then send the lesson to friends or put it on YouTube or some other social media service.
A. However, you may write the lesson down.
B. One way to reach these goals is to try teaching.
C. You could record a video of yourself teaching lessons.
D. It’s also a good way to teach your classmates in your class.
E. Another idea is to imagine yourself describing a lesson to someone.
F. Tutoring means teaching one person or a very small group of students.
G. For example, you could teach your parents about English grammar or words.
