When I was a child,my parents often took me to an old house in a thick forest. No other children ever stayed there. I didn’t even have the choice of playing with a brother or sister.
I could never understand what the attraction of the house was, even for my parents, who enjoyed nothing better than to sit in silence with a good book. The woman in the house,my father’s distant cousin, was a terrible cook and her food was inedible.
One day, when I was wandering around the garden behind the house,I noticed a wooden house which had clearly been abandoned. As I walked towards it,I heard a noise, like an animal moving hurriedly away. Then I saw a man with a long beard standing at the door.I was greatly surprised.
‘‘Please don’t tell them you saw me,” he said.“They never use this place, and I have nowhere else to live.” “Don’t worry,”I said.“I won’t tell anyone. But are you all right out here? I mean–do you have enough to eat?” The old man shook his head.
The same evening,I took a small plastic bag into the dining room and, while no one was looking, emptied some of the food into it.Later,I got out of the back door secretly and gave the food to the old man, whose name I had discovered was Taff.
I had never seen anything else as lovely as the smile of satisfaction on Taff’s face when he ate the food. From then on, my visits to the old house had a purpose, and I enjoyed every minute of the rest of my stay.

Celia was shocked. She had always been in good shape during high school, but now, in her first year of college, she was suddenly ten pounds heavier. “ My friends and I often had pizza or ice cream when we studied late at night,” she said, “and I was always drinking Coke to stay awake.”
Celia’s experience is common. Many students enter college and find it so different that they cannot deal with changes properly. They’re away from their parents and in a new stressful environment. Pressures together with freedom to sleep and eat whatever they please cause many students to experience the “Freshman 15”:gaining weight suddenly in their freshman year of college.
Most students do not realize that the “Freshman 15” can cause some serious health problems. of course, college-age adults are still developing bone mass, so gaining some weight is normal. Sudden weight gain, however, puts too much strain(负担)on the heart and lungs, resulting in little energy and some difficult thinking and remembering. In later life, it can lead to heart disease, diabetes(糖尿病),obesity(肥胖症),and possibly cancer.
The solution to the “Freshman 15” is simple—pay attention to developing good habits! In general:
●Eat normal-sized meals at regular times.Eat slowly and enjoy it, so you don’t need to go back for more.
●Keep only healthy snacks in your room-and don’t snack too often!
●Control drinking and smoking. Alcohol has a lot of calories, and smoking too much makes exercise difficult.
●Exercise regularly! Even just 30 minutes a day-such as walking quickly to class from your dorm—will make a big difference!
    28. What happened to Celia in her first year of college?
A.She had sleep problems B.She put on weight suddenly
C.he always studied late D.She went on diet so as to keep in good shape
    29. What do many students think of their freshman year of college?
A.They find it quite different B.They find it not quite difficult
C.They find it very free D.They find it simple
    30. What do most college students fail to realize?
    A.Gaining some weight is normal
    B.They have grown up
C.They have gained a lot of weight
D.Sudden weight gain may result in serious health problems
    31. What are students advised to do?
    A.Eat slowly and exercise regularly
B.Eat all foods slowly and regularly
C.Keep enough healthy snacks in the room
D.Eat healthy snacks as much as possible
    D
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to travel to Australia. As a little girl, I thought of the country as a faraway place where kangaroos wandered freely and things were a bit different from my home state of New Jersey.Anxious to spend a semester in Australia, my home college,Drew University, authorized(批准)me to do so.
The long flight to this far off country was definitely worth the experience that I had there.Although Macquarie University and Dunmore Lang College were different from my home university, those differences proved to help make my experience one I will never forget. With about 250 people living in Dunmore Lang College, both international students and Australians, the building provides a family atmosphere.Other Americans that stayed at MUC,apartments on campus that house mainly Americans, used to joke that we had “family dinners”.This was because everyone seemed to come down to dinner around the same time and to use that time to catch up with each other, make plans, and get to know one another.
The people that I met were amazing people. It was:amazing how well we all got to know one another in such a short period of time. This trip lived up to the high expectations that I had for it.I can think of no better ways to spend time in Australia than by going to school there on the AIFS program.
There is easy access to Sydney from Macquarie University by public transportation.Sydney itself is a great:city with amazing night life and plenty to do during the day.Although technically your main purpose is to study:while abroad, the teachers and staff are very understanding of the fact that you wish to travel and explore the country. Traveling is the main way you are going to get a sense of the Australia culture.
    32. What made the author interested in Australia when she was young?
A.The famous university in her dream.
B.The wonderful life and culture in Sydney.
C.The famous and amazing people living there.
D.The cute kangaroos and other mysterious things.
    33. Why did the author and other Americans love “family dinner”?
A.They were international students loving making dinners.
B.The family atmosphere made them miss their home land.
C.They could have dinner and know others.
D.They could ask others to help them make plans about study.
    34. How did the author think of her experience in Australia?
A.It hardly lived up to her earlier expectation.
B.The amazing people there made her curious.
    C.It was greater than expected.
D.She could find better ways to get more experience.
    35. How did the author know Australian culture better?
A.By making friends with more Australians.
B.By making tours to meet the people and scenery.
C.By reading as many books as possible in the library.
D.By talking with the teachers and staff in the university.
