Although May 24 was a working day, thousands of people wearing black went to the Mingyangshan Funeral Home in Hunan province to present flowers and bunches of rice plants to honor Yuan Longping. The top rice scientist, referred to as the “father of hybrid rice”, died of organ failure at age 91 on May 22.
Born in 1930 in Beijing, Yuan witnessed the despair of people who lost their land they lived on in an era of war. So when he applied for university, he decided to study agriculture. But his parents worried it would be tough and tiring. However, Yuan said: “Having enough food was people’s basic needs,” noted People’s Daily. Yuan set out to solve the problem. He began researching hybrid rice in 1964, succeeding in producing the world’s first high-yielding (高产的) hybrid rice strain (品种) in 1973.
More importantly, he was selfless when it came to sharing his research to benefit people globally. To date, his hybrid rice strain has been planted in large areas of India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, the US and Brazil. “Professor Yuan was incredibly humble, never seeking fame or praise, instead focusing only on hard work and results that could help remove poverty and lift people out of hunger,” Kenneth M. Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation, told China Daily.
Yuan could make such achievements partly because he believed in the power of science as a harvest multiplier, noted People’s Daily.
The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs mourned (悼念) his passing on Twitter, saying, “Yuan passed away today at 91 but his mission to end hunger lives on.”
24. What can we learn from the passage?

“I think kawaii, or cute feelings, can remind us of human connection that we sometimes forget,” says Hiroshi Nittono, director of the Cognitive Psychophysiology Laboratory at Osaka University.
“Viewing cute images of baby animals gives us a desire to act tenderly and responsibly to protect them,” he explains. “This idea holds that weak and defenseless but cute things set off caregiving behavior in the beholder.” Cute things make us feel protective, and when we’re protective, we might be naturally more focused.
Engineers, advertisers, and developers have taken advantage of this phenomenon, using kawaii to control user experience and consumer behavior. Researchers call it cute engineering. It’s a way to harness positive feelings and emotions to motivate (激励) and shape the user’s behavior in a positive way.
Sometimes cute engineering is subtle (微妙的), but it’s often quite obvious. Engineers use kawaii in the field of robotics, for instance—the cuter the robot, the more humans will want to engage with it. There’s also the iMac, which over the years, Apple designed to be subtly adorable (可爱的). It persuaded traditionally non-computer users to buy into the world of computing so that they could sell more units.
There’s also “cute filtering (萌物滤镜)”, a component of cute engineering that allows consumers to personalize their kawaii experience, just like the way iMac users could choose the color of their units. In this way, users can create their own kawaii experience. Using a “cute filter”, users can freely choose the cuteness parameters (参数) such as color, size, motion, smell, and taste to adjust their desired cute output.
28. Why would people like to protect cute baby animals according to Hiroshi Nittono?
A. People have no choice but to do it.
B. People are taught to protect animals.
C. Cute things motivate people to protect them.
D. Cute baby animals are too weak to protect themselves.
29. What does the underlined word “harness” probably mean?
A. Focus on. B. Figure out. C. Throw light on. D. Make use of.
30. Why was the iMac designed to be adorable?
A. The iMac could shape people’s preference.
B. Computer producers could make more money.
C. Engineers could design computers to their taste.
D. Consumers would like to have more kawaii experience.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Power of Kawaii. B. Protect Cute Animals.
C. A New Discovery. D. Control Cute Feelings.
D
Climate change is making people sick, according to a pair of influential reports on the connections between global warming and health.
Dr. Renee Sala, an emergency room physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, says governments who want to support public health must stop financially supporting the fossil fuel industry. “Climate change and air pollution have the same root cause—the burning of fossil fuels,” she says.
Longer, more intense heat waves are a particularly deadly effect of global warming around the world, and older people are most at risk. Over the past 20 years, the number of people over 65 who have died as a result of extreme heat has increased more than 50%, the Lancet report says. At least 296,000 people died because of heat in 2018, the most recent year for which global data are available.
According to the same survey, more countries are providing climate and weather information to doctors and hospitals. Helping hospitals and doctors prepare for climate-driven disasters is increasingly important. Sala says the 2020 pandemic (疫情) made clear how ill-equipped the public health equipment is to handle major disasters. She says the failures of the health system this year in the US should be a wake-up call to spend more money protecting health, especially in communities where poor people have been exposed to pollution and denied adequate health care.
Dr. Georges Benjamin, director of the American Public Health Association, says the global economic recovery from the pandemic is an opportunity to adapt to climate change. For example, urban areas without green space are increasingly dangerous heat islands that trap hot air and pollution. Planting trees, reducing highway and industrial pollution and investing in new housing are all ways to address (应对) climate change, he argues. “It’s preventable,” Benjamin says. “We don’t have to live this way.”
32. How does the author develop the third paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing figures.
C. By making comparisons. D. By proving causes and effects.
33. Why is climate and weather information provided to doctors and hospitals?
A. It improves health care for doctors.
B. It helps them to prevent climate change.
C. It is a wake-up call to improve the health system.
D. It can prepare them for the climate-related disasters.
34. What can we mainly know from the last paragraph?
A. People’s health is connected with climate change.
B. Economic developments threaten the environment.
C. Action should be taken to deal with climate change.
D. The 2020 pandemic offers a chance to adapt to climate change.
35. Which part of a newspaper is this text probably taken from?
A. Society. B. Technology. C. Health. D. Economy.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was an impatient mother and frustration (沮丧) always kept me from enjoying life, until some strange insects came to my family.
It was Friday. We were having friends over for dinner, but Mike had to stay late at work. I was now on my own to get everything ready for the night. I could feel my frustration increasing as I drove to pick up Haydn and Michael from school. I rushed them into the car and told them that we were making a few stops before heading home, and that they needed to help me tidy the house. Both of them started complaining immediately. I turned and gave them fair warning that I was not in the mood to listen. For the next hour, I dragged the boys from one place to the next…
Just as we finished our last task, the boys reminded me that we needed to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets (蟋蟀) for their lizards (蜥蜴). Fifteen minutes later, I pulled into the driveway with only forty-five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it?
I started barking orders at the boys, but they were focused on pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into the top of their little cricket container. I just let off steam and yelled at them to hurry up.
I don’t really know how it happened, but the next time I looked up, one hundred crickets were jumping all over my kitchen…
My frustration exploded. I could feel myself about to start yelling in a way I rarely do. I watched my two sweet boys try anxiously to chase(追捕) the crickets, screaming with laughter. Strangely, I felt something different.
In that split second, I realized I had two choices. Could I continue feeling annoyed and angry, or could I let go and enjoy this silly moment?
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I jumped off the chair and started chasing crickets with my boys. ______________________________________

I jumped off the chair and started chasing crickets with my boys. They were everywhere. Every time we tried to put a cricket into the container, another one would jump out. We yelled with excitement, laughing uncontrollably. The clock was still ticking, but we didn’t care. Fifteen minutes later, we got all of the little guys into their box. Once we were done, my boys enthusiastically helped me get ready for the dinner. It became a game to see if we could make it in time. We were all in such a fabulous mood.
Our guests arrived and we had a wonderful dinner party. The boys helped me tell them all about our “strange insects problem”. All of us broke into laughter again. For weeks after, looking back on that day always made me crack a smile. That moment is a constant reminder to me that I should never let frustration keep me from enjoying life. Things would go wrong. Keep cool, and take a few deep breaths. Don’t let anger dominate you. Try to think of something that brings you joy. You’ll find something if you try.

Text 10
W: Running a few kilometres each day is good for our health. However, new research says running too much could be bad for us. Running long distances regularly for many years could make our life shorter, not longer. The study is from the Minneapolis Heart Institute. A researcher said too much running could lead to heart disease. He wrote that running too much for many years takes away the good things from exercise. He added that the risk of heart disease could be the same as someone who never exercises. Researchers looked at the health and training of 3,300 runners over the age of 35. Seventy per cent of them ran over 30 kilometres a week. Men who ran marathons for 25 years had 62% more chances of developing heart disease than men who did little or no exercise. Another doctor said he felt cheated. He started running marathons and doing triathlons in 1967. He used to run 60 kilometres every week. He said: “I thought I was out there exhausting myself, building an absolutely indestructible heart.” The doctor advised people to exercise regularly but not to overdo things.
