Just like any other home, the International Space Station (ISS) requires some housekeeping, in the form of routine work and repairs. That is why NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and fellow astronaut Kjell Lindgren performed a spacewalk outside the station on Wednesday. The operation began at 8:03 a.m. and lasted for more than seven hours. It was the first spacewalk for both men.
The ISS has been in constant use for 15 years and needs to be upgraded (升级) from time to time. During their spacewalk, Kelly and Lindgren did basic electrical work, such as attaching new cables that will provide power to docking ports on the station. The ports will be used when new crew (工作人员) and cargo ships arrive at the ISS in 2017. The two astronauts also placed a thermal (防寒的) cover on a key scientific instrument on the station to protect it from the cold temperatures of space.
As the more senior astronaut, Kelly led the spacewalk. However, Lindgren handled some of the more challenging parts of the job in some of the tighter areas of the station.
“Lindgren has longer arms,” said NASA's Grant Slusser, who served as ground director for Wednesday's spacewalk.
Kelly and Lindgren spent months training and practicing for the operation. The preparation began in NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab (NBL), a 6.2milliongallon swimming pool with a fullsize replica (复制品) of most of the ISS located at the bottom. Here astronauts become accustomed to working in an environment similar to the one outside the space station.
During the spacewalk, Kelly and Lindgren received updates from NASA that provided them with both major and minor details, right down to how many turns are needed to tighten a bolt (螺栓). Once the task was successfully completed, the astronauts reentered the ISS. But they will not remain inside the station for too long. Both men will perform a second spacewalk scheduled for November 6.
24.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The goal of Wednesday's spacewalk.
B.The duties of NASA astronauts in space.
C.The role of the International Space Station.
D.The flight schedules of spaceships in 2017.
25.Why did Lindgren take on the more challenging parts of the job?
A.He is several years senior to Kelly.
B.He has a physical advantage over Kelly.
C.He has more work experience than Kelly.
D.He is braver and more confident than Kelly.
26.The spacewalk Kelly and Lindgren performed________.
A.started at night B.seemed a difficult task
C.was directed by the NBL D.was their second spacewalk
27.What will Kelly and Lindgren do next?
A.Go back to the earth. B.Welcome the new crew's arrival.
C.Prepare for their next spacewalk. D.Get in touch with the ground control center.

A US dad quit his job, giving up a massive salary, after his 10yearold daughter gave him a 22point list outlining all the events he had missed so far during the year. As the CEO of the global investment firm PIMCO, Mohamed ElErian shocked the finance industry when he quit in January.
ElErian said it was about a year ago when he was repeatedly asking his daughter to brush her teeth, but she wasn't listening. When he asked her why, she responded with a list of 22 milestones he had missed: like the first day of school and the first soccer game of the season.
“And the school year wasn't yet over,” ElErian wrote.“I felt awful and got defensive: I had a good excuse for each missed event, such as travel, important meetings, and urgent phone calls. But it dawned on me that I was missing an infinitely more important point. My worklife balance had gotten out of whack, and the imbalance was hurting my special relationship with my daughter. I was not making enough time for her.” ElErian explained he was struggling for worklife balance.
Dads are quitting their profitmaking jobs to improve worklife balance. This is a subject that is getting more attention as some highprofile executives have recently written about their experiences.
Last month, former MongoDB CEO Max Schireson wrote a blog post about his decision to step down from the CEO position. He wrote that he struggled to make time for his three children because he was flying around half a million kilometres a year for work.
“I was not with my kids when our puppy was hit by a car, or when my son had an emergency surgery,” Schireson wrote.
On an overnight flight to Texas he woke up in Arizona to discover the plane made an emergency landing and some of traumatized crew members had to be replaced. He decided it was time to address his worklife balance.
Quitting is something ElErian and Schireson were financially able to do, but ElErian recognizes most_people_don't_have_this_luxury. He hopes companies will pay attention to improving worklife balance for their employees.
ElErian now manages “a portfolio of parttime jobs” that don't require much travel. He alternates mornings with his wife taking their daughter to school and he often picks her up from school.
“So far, it's been the right decision for me,” he wrote. “I'm so grateful that this is providing me with great opportunities to experience key moments in my daughter's life before they're all too quickly gone.”
28.ElErian resigned from PIMCO mainly because ______.
A.his daughter has been missing him badly
B.he was getting bored with the endless flights
C.he hoped to get his daughter to listen to him
D.he wanted to experience his daughter's milestones
29.What does the underlined part “most people don't have this luxury” probably mean?
A.Most people don't like their jobs.
B.Most people have to work for financial security.
C.Not all dads have a 10yearold daughter.
D.Not all dads face the problem of worklife balance.
30.What do we know about ElErian's life now?
A.He now takes parttime jobs, which don't involve any business travel.
B.He spends most of his day with his daughter.
C.He manages to take on his responsibilities as a father.
D.He is now living an easy and relaxed life because he needn't go to work.
31.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.It's never too late to see children grow up healthily.
B.Many working parents can balance their career and family life well.
C.CEOs are occupied with work and have no time for their family.
D.Parents' love can not be replaced by money or jobs.

Scientists have always been interested in the high level of organization in ant societies. American researchers have watched ants build lifesaving rafts to keep afloat during floods. They also have documented how ants choose their next queen — the female whose job is to produce eggs.
New technology is helping to improve researchers' understanding of the insects. But there is still a lot to be learned.
Fire ants living in Brazilian forests are perfectly at home in an environment where flooding is common. To save themselves, the insects connect their legs together and create floating rafts. Some ant rafts can be up to 20 centimeters wide.
David Hu is an engineer with the Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, saying,“If you have 100 ants, which means 600 legs, 99 percent of those legs will be connected to a neighbor. So they're very, very good at maintaining this network.”
David Hu and other Georgia Tech researchers wanted to study ants and the secret of their engineering. They froze ant rafts and then looked at them with the help of computed technology, or CT images. The pictures showed that larger ants serve in central positions to which smaller ants hold. The larger ants form pockets of air that keep the insects afloat.
Scientists say small robots or materials that can change shape could be programmed in a similar way, working towards a shared goal.
Researchers at North Carolina State University are also studying ants. They examined how Indian jumping ants choose the leader of the colony when they lose their top female or queen.
32.The author takes fire ants as an example to tell us ________.
A.how ants seek food B.how ants survive
C.how ants communicate D.how ants live together
33.What can we know from what David Hu said?
A.Ants know the way to join together closely.
B.Ants know the way to keep a good figure.
C.Ants know the way to help each other.
D.Ants know the way to form a strong society.
34.Why did the larger ants serve in central positions in their ant rafts?
A.To stress their importance. B.To protect the smaller ants.
C.To attack their enemies. D.To defend themselves.
35.What inspiration do the ants give us according to the passage?
A.We can use similarshaped machines in floodstricken areas.
B.We can combine small robots or materials into larger ones.
C.Small and shapechangeable objects might work just like ants do.
D.Small robots or materials in the shape of ants can be made.

The health benefits of journaling
Scientific evidence supports that journaling (or keeping diaries) provides unexpected benefits. The act of writing accesses your left brain, which is analytical and rational (推理的). While your left brain is occupied, your right brain is free to create and feel. In sum,
writing removes mental blocks and allows you to use all of your brainpower to better understand yourself, others and the world around you.__36__
Clarify your thoughts and feelings. Do you ever seem all mixed up inside, unsure of what you want or feel? Taking a few minutes to write down your thoughts and emotions will quickly get you in touch with your internal (内心的) world.
__37__ By writing routinely you will get to know what makes you feel happy and confident. You will also become clear about situations and be able to recognize people who will not get on with you — important information for your emotional wellbeing.
Reduce stress. Writing about anger, sadness and other painful emotions helps to release your feelings. __38__
Solve problems more effectively. Typically we solve problems from a leftbrained, analytical perspective. But sometimes the answer can only be found by involving rightbrained creativity and intuition (直觉).__39__
Resolve disagreements with others.Writing about misunderstandings rather than worrying about them will help you understand another's point of view.__40__
In addition to all of these wonderful benefits, keeping a journal allows you to track patterns, trends and improvements and growth over time.
A.Achieve goals.
B.Know yourself better.
C.Begin journaling and begin experiencing the following benefits.
D.By doing so you will feel calmer and be able to stay in the present.
E.And you just may come up with a sensible resolution to the conflict.
F.People have been studying whether the emotional release brings better sleep.
G.Writing affords the opportunity for unexpected solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems.

参考范文
Hello John
Glad to hear from you. I,m writing to discuss with you about how to make good friends.
In my opinion, to make friends, the most important thing is that you must be friendly to others. Smile at others, and you are sure to get a smile in return. Besides, never judge a person only by his/her appearance. What's more, you should think more of others than of yourself which will make you more attractive
On the other hand, if you don' t agree with others sometimes, don 't argue but discuss with them. Always remember, the true friend is coming in the door while
everyone else is going out, as the saying goes, "A friend in need is a friend indeed .
All the best
Yours.
