What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future? What if we could jump and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased?

The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math, trying to make the dream of time travel come true.

Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing called “spacetime.” He said there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth dimension.

Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super-fast through flat spacetime will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we are on Earth or in space.

Stephen Hawking believes that a time machine will never be built. If it were possible, he thinks we would already know. If a time machine could be built, how come no one from the future has invaded us?

The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward.

Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? Most important is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder.

    24. What is the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?

    A. To show time and space are connected.

    B. To ask some questions about time travel.

    C. To draw readers’ attention to time travel.

    D. To make people believe time travel is possible.

    25. Which of the following statements could Einstein agree with?

    A. Time travel is possible in the future.B. People can’t move faster than light.

    C. Time travel is against scientific rules.D. Spacetime is not a real thing in theory.

    26. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about?

    A. The first science fiction story. B. Different works about time travel.

    C. Edward P. Mitchell, the pioneer. D. Some tools used in time travel.

    27. What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel?

    A. Negative.B. Pessimistic.C. Sceptical. D. Hopeful.

Driven by her passion for providing quality healthcare, a Latvian woman has won over the hearts of the elderly residing in the nursing home she oversees.

It is incredibly rare to find a Caucasian woman working as the director of a nursing home in Shanghai. But the fact that Anastasija Puzankova can even converse in Liantang, a Chinese dialect spoken only by residents in a small town in southwestern Shanghai, makes her one of a kind.

I had always wondered how the elderly were getting along with others, or if they were well cared for. I realized that I could better serve them and understand their concerns if I spoke their dialect.” says the 35-year-old, who also speaks Russian, English, Latvian, French and Spanish.

Puzankova chose to study Sinology(汉学) out of her curiosity about China at the University of Latvia in 2003. The next year, she traveled to Shanghai as part of an exchange program and then she spent the next 10 years studying law at Fudan University, graduating with a master's degree in 2014.

Despite her qualifications, in 2018, Puzankova joined Haiyang Group, a Shanghai-based company that operates the nursing home, as an executive assistant. During that period, she performed so well in her nursing and management training that she was appointed the director of the home after just one year.

A caregiver, surnamed Cai, says the atmosphere at the home has changed since Puzankova took charge. “She makes life in the nursing home uplifting and purposeful.” says Cai.

“She throws monthly birthday parties for the elderly, creates a festive mood in the home for every traditional festival and frequently organizes handicrafts classes and activities to stimulate the minds of the residents.”

When family visits and group activities were delayed during the novel coronavirus outbreak, Puzankova came up with a similar idea at the home, purchasing vegetable seeds and growing them in the field near the nursing home so that the residents can observe the plants growing from their windows.

“Just watching the plants grow can lift their spirits. We can also serve these organic vegetables to them.” she explains.

Puzankova says, “I simply like communicating with people, understanding their personalities and offering help when they are in need. Making an elderly person happy isn't hard. It just takes a little time, love and thought.”

    28. Why did Anastasija Puzankova learn the Chinese dialect Liantang?

    B. created a festive mood in the home.

    C. organized some outdoor activities for the elderly.

Inflammation(炎症) is the body’s defense mechanism. You might have experienced it if you sustained physical injuries or had an infection, like the flu, which causes a sore throat. Inflammation can occur in any organ, but it is most common and easy to see in the skin. You will notice redness, heat and swelling.

Usually this is a good thing, as it shows you have a healthy immune system that can kill pathogens(病原体) and repair damage. However, inflammation can be a double-edged sword as in some people it can target the body’s healthy cells, causing what is called an autoimmune disease.

Given this danger, a new study from Cambridge University, UK, has been looking into brain conditions that are not usually linked to autoimmune diseases. The study found that inflammation of the brain---known as neuroinflammation(神经炎症)---has been linked to several forms of dementia(痴呆).

In this new study, researchers scanned the brains of 31 volunteers with three different types of dementia. The first scan was to highlight neuroinflammation, and a second scan illuminated (阐明) poisonous proteins that are linked with dementia. The team also examined 12 post-mortem (after death) brains.

These experiments showed similar patterns of poisonous protein build-up and neuroinflammation, suggesting a relationship between inflammation and dementia.

“Even we were surprised by how tightly these two problems mapped on to each other. Now, the big question is what role this neuroinflammation plays in the decline of the mind associated with dementia,” said Thomas Cope, one of the authors of the study.

Another of the study’s researchers, James Rowe, highlighted the importance of further research. He said the frequent presence of inflammation in neurodegenerative(神经退化的) diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, “offers hope that immune-based treatments might help slow or prevent these conditions ”.

    32. Why is inflammation usually a good thing?

    A. It can defend our body against infection.

    B. It is a reflection of a healthy immune system.

    C. It gives long-term protection to healthy cells.

    D. It allows injuries to heal themselves.

    33. What did the study from Cambridge University find?

    A. Neuroinflammation leads to dementia.

    B. Increased poisonous proteins in the brain cause dementia.

    C. Neuroinflammationhave something to do with dementia.

    D. Poisonous protein build-up and neuroinflammation have different patterns.

    34. What is still unknown according to Thomas Cope?

    A. Why neuroinflammation is connected with dementia.

    B. How the decline of the mind is associated with dementia.

    C. How to prevent neuroinflammation from developing into dementia.

    D. To what extent neuroinflammation and dementia are linked with each other.

    35. What can be inferred from James Rowe’s words?

    A. Research on neuroinflammation could help treat neurodegenerative diseases.

    B. Immune-based treatments would be the best cure for dementia.

    C. Inflammation is one of the causes of neuroinflammation .

    D. Further research will focus on methods of cutting poisonous proteins in the brain.

Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question:Should I jump? This is what motivation or the lack of it can do.Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of the same coin. 36 Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.

37 More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal? First, you need to evaluate yourself, yourvalues, yourstrengths, yourweaknesses, yourachievements, yourdesires, etc.Only then should you set your goals.

Another way of setting realistic goals is to analyze your short and long term objectives, keeping in mind your beliefs, values and strengths.Remember that goals are flexible. 39 They also need to be measurable. You must keep these points in mind while setting your goals.

Your personal circumstances are equally important.Forexample, you may want to be a pilot but cant become one because your eyesight is not good enough. 40 You should reassess your goals, and motivate yourself to set a fresh goal.

You will surely need to overcome some difficulties, someplanned, but most unplanned. You cannot overcome them without ample motivation.Make sure that you plan for these difficulties at the time of setting your goals.

    A.This can affect your work.

B.So how should you motivate yourself?

    C.However,this should not discourage you.

D.So why should we try to set specific goals?

E.They can change according to circumstances.

F.Motivation is what you need most to do a good job.

G.Withoutmotivation, you can neither set a goal nor reach it.

From the first day he entered my classroom , Willard P . Frank existed in his own world , shutting out his classmates and me . My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference . I could see that his classmates fared no better . Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence .

Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday , we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district .

“ Christmas is a season of giving ,” I told my students .“ There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season . By contributing to our Christmas collection , you will help buy food , clothing and toys for these people in need . We will start the collection tomorrow .”

When I called for the contributions the next day , I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P . Frank . The boy dug deep into his pants pockets when he walked slowly to my desk .Carefully , he dropped two quarters into the small container .

“ I don ’ t need milk for lunch ,” he mumbled(含糊的说话). For a moment , just a moment , he smiled . Then he turned and walked back to his desk .

That night , after school , I took our few contributions to the school principal(校长. I could not help sharing the story that had taken place in my class .

“ I may be wrong , but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him ,” I told the principal .

“ Yes .” he nodded .“ And we might do well to have him shared a bit of his world with us . I just received a list of the poor families in our school who need help the most through the Christmas collection .Here , take a look at it .”

As I gazed down (俯瞰) to read , I discovered Willard P . Frank and his family were the top names on the list . Seeing this , I decided to do something for him .

    第三部分写作(共两节, 满分40分)

    第一节(满分15分)

Should English be removed from middle school curricula?

As far as the topic is concerned, I’m opposed to scrapping English from middle school curriculum. My reasons are as follows.

Proficiency in English is a must for us students who are now living in an interconnected world. Without a good command of it, we would not be able to keep up with the rest of the world. What’s more, mastering it can undoubtedly help us gain global perspectives as well as drawing inspiration from the world, which can help us go further. Last but not least, English classes in middle schools have been undergoing changes, shifting from score focused to competence cultivating.

In conclusion, by no means should English be removed.

    第二节  读后续写(满分25分)

On that Sunday , I paid a visit to Willard ’ s family . On entering his house , I was surprised to find a barely empty room with only a broken bed and a dirty second - hand sofa . Having known my presence , Willard told me that his mother passed away a few years ago and his father was missing without any message , leaving him to live with a sick grandma . When asked why he had given the two quarters , Willard mumbled ,“ There are people poorer than me in our school , so I just want to do something helpful by donating my milk money .” Hearing his words , I couldn ’ t help sinking into silence with tears blurring my eyes . I thought I should try my best to break his silence .

The next day , I had a special class for Willard . I shared his story with the whole class and said “ Now , on behalf of the people in need , I should say thank you Willard , you are so great !Your small action of kindness makes a great difference to us ”. After a totally dead silence , all the students stood up with applause erupting through the whole class , saying “ Willard , you are great ! Willard , you are great !” After that , they walked slowly to him and hugged him tightly . Just at that moment , a friendly relationship was built and Willard ’ s silence was broken by a smile on his face .
