Many people know that rubbish is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that junk(垃圾)has become a problem in outer space too.
According to BBC News, there are more than 22, 000 pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes (望远镜). There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.
Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spaceship, it could damage the vehicle.
To make things worse, when two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a U.S. satellite hit an old Russian rocket in 2009, it broke into more than 2,000 pieces, increasing the amount of space junk.
To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.
Many scientists also suggesting different ways to clean up space junk. In England scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed.
The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers,” says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space
    Researcher.
“The time to act is now. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become,” he says.

Beauty sleep is a real thing, researches have shown that people who have enough sleep look more attractive (有魅力的) to others.
A few bad nights is enough to make a person look "especially" more ugly, their sleep experiments show.
The researchers asked 25 university students to join in their sleep experiment. They were asked to get a good night's sleep for two nights.
A week later, they were asked to sleep for only four hours every night for two nights in a row.
The researchers took make-up free (素颜) photos of the volunteers after both the good and the bad sleep.
Next, they asked 122 strangers to have a look at the photos and judge (评价) them on attractiveness, health, and sleepiness, as well as asking them: "How much would you like to make friends with this person in the picture?"
The strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was tired, and, if they were sleepy, their attractiveness score was low.
The strangers also said they wouldn't want to socialize with the tired students. The researchers say this is natural for people. An unhealthy-looking face makes people run away. In other words, people don't want to hang around with people who might be ill.
Dr. Brewer, an expert at the University of Liverpool said "Judgement of attractiveness is often unconscious (无意识的), hut we all do it, and we are able to judge on even something small like whether someone looks tired or unhealthy. This study is a good reminder of how important sleep is to us."

I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature(文学) class. Having taught in the US for 17 years, I was sure of my ability to hold their attention and I was confident that they would admire(钦佩) my ability to teach them literature well in English.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted, “stand up!” The whole class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat unclear about how to get them to sit down again, but once the embarrassment(尴尬) was over, I quickly gained my calmness and admiration again. I went back, to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement(成就).
My students kept diaries. However, as I read them, the rosy glow was slowly replaced(取代) by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, “Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today perhaps her next lecture(讲座) will be better.” Greatly surprised, I read diary after diary, each saying something about a similar theme. “Didn’t I teach them anything? I described the whole Western philosophy(哲学) and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,” I complained. “How should they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
It was a long term, and it slowly became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students. I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
However, I also learned a lot; and the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, and I knew how to teach in a different culture.

In Ben Elton’s book Gridlock, aliens come to our world to learn about people. They look at the places where we live and work, and how we travel. But they don’t understand cars. They see that every morning millions of people get into big boxes. These boxes take people many kilometers to their workplaces. But often, the big boxes can’t move because there are so many of them. Then, in the evening, the people get into their boxes and slowly drive home again.
The aliens think this really strange. Why don’t people travel in the faster boxes they call trains or buses? Or live near their workplaces? Do they like to sit in boxes for hours? Or aren’t they very smart?
The aliens are right. Why don’t we live near our workplace? It’s often because houses are too expensive in the city. People who lived in the city before have to live outside it now. But many jobs are in the city center. Cheaper houses in cities are a possible answer to traffic problems.

Many expressions that we use in American English come from novels. Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel “Alice in Wonderland” in detail.
The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words. Alice chases (追赶)him, and that is where her adventures begin. In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation.
Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a confusing(令人困惑的)situation. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distraction(分神). It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful.
Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares(野兔)have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is mating(交配)season. Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is completely mad, or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy. Of the two, mad as a Hatter is more common. But don’t tell the March Hare. Who knows how he will react(反应)! Near the end of the story, Alice meets the Queen of Hearts. A woman called a Queen of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.

When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do?
In the UK and the US, there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer.
Have you heard the saying “When you wish upon a star”? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn’t happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one, you have been very lucky, and so if you make a wish, it will come true.
Maybe you have heard of the lucky rabbit’s foot. Some people believe that rabbits are lucky animals, so they carry a special part of the rabbit, its foot, for good luck. There are all kinds of strange, unclear rules about which of the rabbit’s feet is the luckiest. It is said that this good luck tradition is the oldest one of all. However, as the funny saying goes, “Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit!”
People in Britain love trees. If it is autumn and leaves are falling from the trees, some people try to catch the leaves as they fall because they think each leaf they catch will bring them a lucky month in the following year—they will need to catch 12 falling leaves to have a whole year of good luck!

What kind of funny jokes do you often play on your classmates? Hide their books or pens away? Or put something strange into their schoolbags? These are not surprising compared with the joke played by a group of six-grade students from Berwick High School.
These naughty students were trying to sell their school building, furniture and “full use of all staff members”. They said that the list also included their headmaster, who might “kill” them if he found out what they were doing. They put the full package on e-Bay for a price of £2,018.
e-Bay was founded in September 1995. At that time, Omidyar’s girlfriend loved Pez candy boxes, but she was sad that she couldn’t find someone who had the same interest as her. So Omidyar set up a caution site to help his girlfriend communicate with Pez candy box lovers in the United States. People can sell things online on e-Bay.
The students also warned that they wouldn’t accept the money they got. After the information was put on e-Bay, there were fourteen people wanting to buy the product. One person even offered £5,000 for the school.
The e-Bay listing was soon removed. However, the school didn’t punish the students. Why? In fact, this was a joke played on the school “Muck-Up Day”. At school, it is a long tradition to play funny jokes on their last day of school before entering their exam time.

I could smell the turkey cooking when I was in my bedroom. I heard them talking happily. So much changed when my new stepsister Jen and stepmother came to live with us
Someone knocked on my door and asked, “Do you want to take Jen skating?" It was Dad.
“I guess.” I answered, thinking about how Dad and I usually spent Thanksgiving Day—building a large snowman.
When I opened the door, Dad hugged me. “We'll make that snowman later,” he promised. But I wasn't sure we'd have time.
“Did you go skating a lot last year?” I asked Jen when we walked on the snow.
Jen shook her head, “I lived in the south and there isn't much snow. On Thanksgiving, Mom and I always went to visit some friends on a farm. I loved seeing their big turkeys.” I could tell she was sad.
I never thought about how Jen would feel until then. She not only had a new stepfather and stepbrother; she had a new town and home, too. For a long time after she moved in, we both sat in a room but never talked with each other.
Suddenly, I didn't feel that sorry for myself. I wanted to do something special and Jen liked my idea.
We made a big snowball first. I made another smaller one and Jen started making an icy cone to put on it. We were so busy that we didn't hear our parents come outside.
“What a big turkey!” said Mom. “I thought we could make it better.” She mixed some food coloring with water and Dad colored its tail. I gave Jen my new scarf and she put it around its neck.
“Thanks for cheering Jen up,” said Mom, carefully touching my arm. “You're a good brother.” I began to know how much she cared about everyone in our new family.
When we finished, many people stopped by.
“Did you make that yourself?” they asked.
