第一节 (共15题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)

Christmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies.
The Grinch (2000)
This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.
Love Actually (2003)
While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version or enabling subtitles (字幕) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.
Home Alone (1990)
This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While the families are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy beat two grown men.
Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The story-line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.
21.Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?
A.Home Alone B.The Grinch.
C.Love Actually. D.Miracle on 34th Street.
22.What is Home Alone mainly about?
A.An unsuccessful family vacation. B.A 10-year-old boy's practical jokes.
C.A terrible suffering to a little boy. D.A boy protecting home by himself.
23.Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?
A.For its famous actors and actresses. B.Because of its funny story.
C.Due to its childish storyline. D.Owing to its moving plots.

If you enjoy reading, don’t miss Shakespeare and Company when you visit the city of Paris. It is a famous English-language bookstore on the left bank of the river Seine. The first Shakespeare and Company in history was opened in 1919 by an American, Sylvia Beach. Ms. Beach did more than sell books. Her bookstore was also a library, and she even prepared beds for writers visiting there. Ms. Beach was not only kind to people but also good at choosing books, so her bookstore was often visited by writers like Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce. But in 1941, after the Germans took power in Paris, Ms. Beach was told to close her bookstore.
In 1951, another American, George Whitman, opened in Paris another English-language bookstore, Librairie Mistral. Since then, just as Ms. Beach did, Mr Whitman has also made his bookstore a library for people to borrow books, and a free hotel for writers to stay in. To remember Ms. Beach, Mr Whitman changed the name of his bookstore to Shakespeare and Company in 1964, two years after Ms. Beach died.
Next time when you are in Paris, don’t forget to visit this friendly bookstore, and see if you can spend a night there!

Basketball star Lebron James made $33 million last year. And that probably doesn’t surprise anyone. We’re used to watching professional athletes(运动员) make and spend millions of dollars.
But there was a time when professional athletes could barely buy a car. For most sports teams in 1950, there were main ways to make money. They sold tickets to games and popcorn in the stadium. For fans, it was a good deal(交易). You could see a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game for 60 cents. For players, the deal wasn’t so great. There wasn't much money to go around. So salaries(薪水) stayed low. In some professional sports, players couldn’t spend the off-season working out. They had to get second jobs so they could pay the rent.
In the 1960s, television changed everything. In 1950, only 1 in 10 American homes had TVs. By 1960, 9 in 10 homes had TVs. And people loved watching sports. At first, team owners were worried about TV. They thought fans wouldn't pay to come to the stadium anymore. But the TV networks paid millions of dollars for the right to show games. That’s when sports teams started to get rich. Finally, the teams shared their wealth with players. In 1974, several baseball teams wanted a player named Catfish Hunter, who chose to play for the New York Yankees. They paid him $1 million just for picking their team. Since then, athletes have only gotten richer. In 2018, the highest-paid player in baseball will make $33 million. In basketball, the average salary is about $7 million a year.
Are sports stars worth the money? Many fans seem to think so. They will pay crazy prices to cheer for their favorite players.
28.What does the underlined word “barely” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.finally B.hardly C.usually D.personally
29.What would fans think of paying 60 cents for a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game in 1950?
A.It was unfair to players. B.It was a bit expensive.
C.It was cheap at the price. D.It was less attractive to them.
30.What influence did TV have on sports in the 1960s?
A.Sports became a big business.
B.People were more willing to play sports.
C.More and more fans came to the stadium.
D.Tickets to games became more expensive.
31.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.How sports stars become famous.
B.Why fans are crazy about sports star.
C.Why sports become more and more popular.
D.How professional athletes started getting rich.
D
Earth’s glaciers (冰川) is disappearing quickly due to global warming. Scientists warn that glaciers will disappear from the mainland US within decades. And their rapid melting is dangerous to society and the natural systems we rely on.
Sea level rise is perhaps the most serious influence. Coastal towns and cities face increasing storms and floods. Alongside this, the loss of freshwater from glaciers means less to drink, to water crops, or to use in generating electricity.
These vast rivers of ice perform a key role in regulating the Earth’s atmosphere. Ice cools air and reflects the sun’s heat away from the planet’s surface, acting as an air conditioning system. Melting glaciers reduce this cooling potential, but researchers have discovered that as meltwaters decrease this also allows certain bacteria in rivers to give off more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Data gathered by the World Glacier Monitoring Service more than a decade ago suggested that the loss of glaciers threatened the livelihood of more than two billion people relying on meltwater in nearby rivers.
Glaciologist Jennifer Wadham told the World Economic Forum in 2021 that glacier loss is an “approaching threat to life”. She notes that glaciers “are lifelines to us, through their freshwaters, but also how they connect with the very weak environments and ecosystems around them as life-support machines in many ways.”
One study from Cornell University says the rise will probably happen quickly, leaving nations with the disastrous situation of more people on less land. By 2100, there could be as many as two billion climate affected people pushing inland from rising seas. Preventing the damage say, researchers means containing greenhouse gas levels and planning for a vastly different world.
32.What is the effect of the melting of glaciers?
A.The fall of sea level. B.The drop in temperature.
C.The lack of fresh water. D.Increasing storms for inland towns.
33.Why do vast rivers of ice play a key part in regulating the atmosphere?
A.Because melting increases cooling potential.
B.Because ice warms the air and reflects the heat.
C.Because melt waters can take in carbon dioxide.
D.Because ice functions as an air conditioner.
34.What is the meaning of the underlined word in the fourth paragraph?
A.Endangered. B.Connected. C.Improved. D.Maintained.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Coastal cities will be flooded with people.
B.The world in the future may differ a lot from what it is now.
C.Greenhouse gas levels make little difference to sea levels.
D.Fewer than 2 billion people will be affected in the years ahead.

I always wonder how people will react if I want a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a crowded station. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I was stuck in such a hopeless situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall (中心) buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could help me telephone my driver. She replied, still all smiles, “I’m sorry, Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife’s interesting theory (理论) that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you’re in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn’t see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.
Paragraph 1:
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids.

Paragraph 1:
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids. I thought that a beautiful woman with charming blue eyes must be willing to help me. So, with great expectation, I walked towards her with an appropriate smile on my face, and requested if she could be kind enough to make a phone call for me. However, without a word, she pulled her kids to escape from me, as if scared by a murderer. I stood there, hopeless, with a blank face and a sinking heart.
Paragraph 2:
Finally a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me. I squeezed a smile and requested him the same thing. Unexpectedly, he took out his mobile phone for me without hesitation. Dancing in his eyes was the real kindness that I had been struggling to look for so long. From that day on, I began helping other strangers in trouble, just like the poor-looking but kind man, with the aim of passing kindness and melting the ice in many people’s hearts.
