Sme f Earth’s plants have fallen in lve with metal. With rts that act practically like magnets (磁铁), these rganisms — abut 700 are knwn — flurish in metal-rich sils that make hundreds f thusands f ther plant species flee r die.
Slicing pen ne f these trees r running the leaves f its bush cusin thrugh a peanut press prduces a blue-green “ juice ” . This “ juice ” is actually ne-quarter nickel (镍), far mre cncentrated than the re feeding the wrld’s nickel smelters (熔炉).
The plants nt nly cllect the sil’s minerals int their bdies but seem t stre them t “ ridiculus ” levels, said Alan Baker, a visiting btany prfessr at the University f Melburne wh has researched the relatinship between plants and their sils since the 1970s. This vegetatin culd be the wrld’s mst efficient, slar-pwered mineral smelters. What if, as a partial replacement t traditinal, energy-intensive and envirnmentally cstly mining and smelting, the wrld harvested nickel plants?
Dr. Baker and an internatinal team f clleagues have set their sights n cnvincing the wrld the idea is mre than just a fun thught experiment. On a plt f land rented frm a rural village n the Malaysian side f the island f Brne, the grup has prved it at small scale. Every six t 12 mnths, a farmer shaves ff ne ft f grwth frm these nickel-hyper-accumulating plants and either burns r squeezes the metal ut. After a shrt purificatin (提纯), farmers culd hld in their hands rughly 500 punds f nickel citrate (硝酸镍), ptentially wrth thusands f dllars n internatinal markets.
Nw, as the team scales up t the wrld’s largest trial at nearly 50 acres, their target audience is industry. In a decade, the researchers hpe that a greater cnsumer demand fr base metals and rare minerals culd be filled by the same kind f farming that prduces the wrld’s ccnuts and cffee.

I’ve been writing fr mst f my life. The bk Writing Withut Teachers intrduced me t ne distinctin and ne practice that has helped my writing prcesses tremendusly. The distinctin is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While yu need t emply bth t get t a finished result, they cannt wrk in parallel n matter hw much we might like t think s.
Trying t criticize writing n the fly is pssibly the single greatest barrier t writing that mst f us encunter. If yu are listening t that 5th grade English teacher crrect yur grammar while yu are trying t capture a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thught, the thught will die. If yu capture the fleeting thught and simply share it with the wrld in raw frm, n ne is likely t understand. Yu must learn t create first and then criticize if yu want t make writing the tl fr thinking that it is.
The practice that can help yu past yur learned bad habits f trying t edit as yu write is what Elbw calls “ free writing. ” In free writing, the bjective is t get wrds dwn n paper nn-stp, usually fr 15-20 minutes. N stpping, n ging back, n criticizing. The gal is t get the wrds flwing. As the wrds begin t flw, the ideas will cme frm the shadws and let themselves be captured n yur ntepad r yur screen.
Nw yu have raw materials that yu can begin t wrk with using the critical mind that yu’ve persuaded t sit n the side and watch quietly. Mst likely, yu will believe that this will take mre time than yu actually have and yu will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.
Instead f staring at a blank start filling it with wrds n matter hw bad. Halfway thrugh yur available time, stp and rewrk yur raw writing int smething clser t finished prduct. Mve back and frth until yu run ut f time and the final result will mst likely be far better than yur current practices.
51. When the authr says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannt wrk in parallel ” in the writing prcess, he means ______ .
A. ne cannt use them at the same timeB. they cannt be regarded as equally imprtant
C. they are in cnstant cnflict with each therD. n ne can be bth creative and critical
52. What prevents peple frm writing n is ______ .
A. putting their ideas in raw frmB. ignring grammatical sundness
C. attempting t edit as they writeD. trying t capture fleeting thughts
53. What is the chief bjective f the first stage f writing?
A. T rganize ne’s thughts lgically.B. T get ne’s ideas dwn.
C. T chse an apprpriate tpic.D. T cllect raw materials.
54. One cmmn cncern f writers abut “ free writing ” is that ______ .
A. it verstresses the rle f the creative mindB. it des nt help them t think clearly
C. it may bring abut t much criticismD. it takes t much time t edit afterwards
55. In what way des the critical mind help the writer in the writing prcess?
A. It allws him t sit n the side and bserve.B. It helps him t cme up with new ideas.
C. It saves the writing time available t him.D. It imprves his writing int better shape.
